The Elements of Typographic Style

The Elements of Typographic Style
Robert Bringhurst | 1996-12-01 00:00:00 | Hartley & Marks | 352 | Graphic Design
Renowned typographer and poet Robert Bringhurst brings clarity to the art of typography with this masterful style guide. Combining the practical, theoretical, and historical, this edition is completely updated, with a thorough exploration of the newest innovations in intelligent font technology, and is a must-have for graphic artists, editors, or anyone working with the printed page using digital or traditional methods.
This lovely, well-written book is concerned foremost with creating beautiful typography and is essential for professionals who regularly work with typographic designs. Author Robert Bringhurst writes about designing with the correct typeface; striving for rhythm, proportion, and harmony; choosing and combining type; designing pages; using section heads, subheads, footnotes, and tables; applying kerning and other type adjustments to improve legibility; and adding special characters, including punctuation and diacritical marks. The Elements of Typographic Style teaches the history of and the artistic and practical perspectives on a variety of type families that are available in Europe and America today.

The last section of the book classifies and displays many type families, offers a glossary of typography terms, and lists type designers and type foundries. The book briefly mentions digital typography, but otherwise ignores it, focusing instead on general typography and page- and type-design issues. Its examples include text in a variety of languages--including English, Russian, German, and Greek--which is particularly helpful if your work has a multinational focus.

Great piece of work. Pleasant to read through and excelent in form and its content.

I've searched for this book after seeing it in person at my colleague. Description of the item at Amazon was exact and accurate.

I've got exactly what I was looking for.
Reviews
I received my book right on time! It was in great condition, a lot better than I expected. (:
Reviews
An incredibly comprehensive journey through the art and science of typography. Written with a poetic edge, the book is a romantic embrace of the world of 'type'. The text often borders on grandiloquence, sometimes resulting in a loss of clarity, but the practical applications, and the author's overriding passion for the subject, justify this book's reputation as a classic of the field. This is not a a book for the professional alone, it is a romance on typography to be read for anybody who wants to enrich his/her reading experience. It reveals how much beauty a well designed book can offer. This is a must-have book for anyone that wants to know the rules of using the printed word correctly.
Reviews
Subtlety, elegance, simplicity. As someone once said: "Its simple to make something difficult, but difficult to make something simple." This expression holds true for this book. This book is not for the faint of heart; it is dense with typographic information spanning a wide breadth from history to art, and theory to practice. This book is one of the few texts on typography that I flip back to when something I've typeset is bothering me. As a reference text, I have yet to see one that is quite so useful.
Reviews
This is not a a book for the professional alone, it is a romance on typography to be read for anybody who wants to enrich his,her reading experience. It reveals how much beauty a well designed book can offer. It unveils the most intimate secrets and relationships between characters and pure space. It is surely Mr. Bringhurst love for life, wisdom and devotion to beauty. A must to anybody who works with design and communication.

Analog-Baseband Architectures and Circuits: for Multistandard and Low-Voltage Wireless Transceivers (Analog Circuits and Signal Processing)

Analog-Baseband Architectures and Circuits: for Multistandard and Low-Voltage Wireless Transceivers (Analog Circuits and Signal Processing)
| 2007-11-01 00:00:00 | | 0 | Miscellaneous

Analog-Baseband Architectures and Circuits reviews the fundamentals and studies the state-of-the-art multistandard transceivers before describing novel architectural and circuit techniques for implementing multimode and wideband (tens of MHz) baseband analog front-ends under low-voltage constraints. Techniques developed on architecture level for efficient system-in-package (SiP) integration, testability and multi-standardability; and on circuit level for reducing the required supply voltage, power and area, are generally applicable for most wireless systems, and are somewhat independent to technology scaling. Experimental 1-V baseband building blocks (i.e., double-quadrature-downconversion filter, programmable-gain amplifier and dc-offset canceler) and a 1-V fully-integrated receiver analog-baseband chain for IEEE 802.11a/b/g WLAN validate the techniques. The implementations are all in standard-VTH CMOS process, and no voltage boosting is required at any node.

Analog-Baseband Architectures and Circuits will be relevant to system architects, circuit designers, professors and students engaged in wireless transceiver front-ends research and development.

Dreams and Dead Ends: The American Gangster Film

Dreams and Dead Ends: The American Gangster Film
Jack Shadoian | 2003-01-16 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press, USA | 400 | Movies
The second edition of this classic study provides a reintroduction to some of the major films and theoretical considerations of film noir and gangster films in twentieth-century America. Ranging from Little Caesar (1930) to Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead (1995), Shadoian guides the reader through twenty classic movies of the genre. His approach is to use brief introductions to introduce distinct eras of the gangster films in each of seven chapters. Moving chronologically, he offers plot synopses and close readings of such definitive examples as Bonnie and Clyde, The Public Enemy, D.O.A. and The Godfather, each accompanied by photographs and author's critiques. Compenendia of facts on each film are also provided. This updated version looks a newer films as well as how the genre has moved into the new century. Appendices look at the movie Criss Cross as an epitome of the genre while others offer different lists of gangster films, including the author's top fourteen alltime, fifty post-Godfather films worth seeing, and fifty vintage films.

ordered the product early january, received it more than a week after the deadline of feb 2, product was fine, it just took way too long to arrive.
Reviews
These are all pseudo-intellectual, academic wannabe articles that are completely full of s*** and have no value. You can flip through and read any one sentence and come to the same conclusion. Completely useless, except to other 'academics' who like to BS in order to pretend that they have some use to the world.
Reviews
This is the essential gangster movie, film noir text.
Scholars and enthusiasts of the film world have been waiting for
this reissue for ages, and finally, it's here.
Shadoian's comprehensive knowledge of film
history and his academic acumen are elegantly
showcased by his witty, well-turned writing,
making this text indispensable in the classroom,
in the personal library and on the coffee table. A
must for anyone with a even passing interest in
the femme fatale, the disenchanted ..., the
moody canted shadows and rain-slicked streets
steeped in shadows and blood. Keep this book handy by
the TV/VCR/DVD player.
Reviews
An incredibly intelligent book. Jack Shadoian knows his field with astonishing depth and bredth. Using his characteristically witty and well-turned style, Shadoian illuminates the historical and social milieu from which these famous films sprouted. I recommend Dreams and Dead Ends as de rigeur for any film scholar.

Secrets of Six-Figure Women: Surprising Strategies to Up Your Earnings and Change Your Life

Secrets of Six-Figure Women: Surprising Strategies to Up Your Earnings and Change Your Life
Barbara Stanny | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | Harper Paperbacks | 304 | Motivational

Quietly and steadily, the number of women making six figures or more is increasing and continues to rise at a rate faster than for men. From entrepreneurs to corporate executives, from white-collar professionals to freelancers and part-timers, women are forging careers with considerable financial success.

In Secrets of Six-Figure Women, Barbara Stanny, journalist, motivational speaker, and financial educator, identifies the seven key strategies of female highearners: A Profit Motive, Audacity, Resilience, Encouragement, Self-Awareness, Non-attachment, and Financial Know-How.

Based on extensive research and hundreds of interviews, including more than 150 women whose annual earnings range from $100,000 to $7 million, Barbara Stanny turns each of the six-figure traits into a specific strategy for upping earnings. By rigorously fine-tuning them, readers can, step-by-step, climb the income ladder.

There are more high-salaried women in the workforce today than ever before, yet most females remain seriously underpaid when compared to their male counterparts. Motivational speaker and financial journalist Barbara Stanny decided to find out why by identifying the differences between those who draw the big bucks and those who don't. In Secrets of Six-Figure Women she reveals what makes the leading edge tick, as well as how others can use the information to boost their own paychecks and self-esteem. "For far too many women, financial limits have become a fact of life. The thought of making more is like climbing Mount Everest, a colossal, if not impossible task," writes Stanny. "That's exactly how I used to feel." By examining scores of top moneymakers, along with dozens of those earning below their potentials, Stanny discovered what works and what doesn't. After analyzing the subsequent lessons (i.e., you actually can boost your income without selling out, the requisite traits to do so can be developed by virtually anyone, money really can't buy happiness), she proposes specific strategies for maximizing their impact (intend from the start to succeed, stretch yourself, manage any payoff with care). Stanny professes throughout that she desires to offer "insight, hope and guidance to any of you who aspire to earn more." With this surprisingly practical and ultimately inspirational guidebook, she delivers. --Howard Rothman
Reviews
This is a book I will refer to for the rest of my career. It doesn't only apply to work but your life as a whole. There are many cliches in the book but with evidence to back it up, how could you not pay attention. My eyes have been opened to my views on life but especially money. I always looked at myself as a hard worker but now I realize all of that had work included little play. I was an unfulfilled underearner until I read this book. I will no longer view life that way so six figure mentality here I come.
Reviews
Just started reading the book. So far it's a very good and isightful

read.
Reviews
Reading about others who broke through their limitations is inspiring. I recommend it to any woman who knows, at her core, that she has allowed herself to be undervalued in dollars and cents -- helpful for women of all ages, education and work passions.
Reviews
Secrets of Six-figure Women by Barbara Stanny was actually quite a good read. And not so much for the women interviewed and the amount of money they earned, but the fact that it gave little nuggets into the psyche of high earners.

I realize that if I am to be financially independant, than I will need to conquer some of my fears and assumptions about money. Reading this book brought to light some attitudes towards money that I hadn't thought of.

There are two great quotes about half-way through the book that summarize it well:

"How does one become a butterfly?" She asked pensively. "You must want to fly so much that are willing to give up being a caterpillar."

~Trina Paulus

"Start by doing what's necessary, then what's possible and suddenly you're doing the impossible."

~St. Francis of Assisi

It is these quotes, along with the examples of the ladies striking out on their own or forging their own paths that is the inspiration behind this book. I believe this is one I will read again in the future, not for a quick answer to making hundred's of thousands, but for the inspiration to take control over money, instead of it over me. And in the process, perhaps I can become a six-figure woman.

As a success coach for women I'm always keeping my eyes open for resources. When I recommended this book to my clients and on my website I got emails thanking me of the recommendation.

The material in this book highlights how 'invisible rules' can hold us back while getting out of our comfort zones is a prerequisite for success. The secrets that Stanny shares have the ability to change your life if you take them to heart.

Every chapter has offers some Aha moments. There is also advice you've probably heard before but somehow Stanny makes that advice fresh. Perhaps it helps that it comes from women who've proven that the advice is sound and it works.

Written in a warm and honest style, it reads like a conversation with a good friend. A very knowledgeable friend.

Her closing chapter brings the definition of real success full circle. But I won't be a spoiler. You'll have to read it for yourself.

I recommend reading this book at least once a year!

Redeeming Culture: American Religion in an Age of Science

Redeeming Culture: American Religion in an Age of Science
James Gilbert | 1998-11-01 00:00:00 | University Of Chicago Press | 418 | 20th Century
In this intriguing new work, James Gilbert examines the historical confrontation between modern science and religion as these disparate, sometimes hostile modes of thought have clashed in the arena of American culture. Beginning in 1925 with the infamous Scopes trial, Gilbert traces nearly forty years of competing American attitudes toward science and religion. From Harvard intellectuals to Hollywood, from UFOs to the USAF, from sci-fi thrillers to the nightly news, from liberal religion to Fundamentalism - American culture became a proving ground where the boundaries between science and religion were polemicized, propagandized, and contested. Ultimately, Gilbert argues, Catholics and Jews as well as Protestants were able to use the language of democracy to check the growing authority of science. They did this by appealing to American tolerance for contending views and by presenting a populist counterweight to what they portrayed as elitist claims to specialized knowledge. In the end, a kind of cultural paradox emerged in which conflicting systems of explanation were accepted, respected, and even encouraged. In Redeeming Culture, Gilbert has managed to convey not only the persistent ambiguities in American approaches to science and religion, but likewise the means by which these ambiguities continually reshape and invigorate our evolving experience.
Reviews
Often scholarly boundary work on scripture and science has a unmistakable aftertaste of partiality. Books that should hold to impartial prose and neutral description instead somehow become investigations into their authors' own inappropriate appetites for atheism or some other equally unsavory "smarter-than-God" criticism than an expected, appropriate, straight-forward cultural observation. Such a distasteful undertone of praise-and-punish schoolmarm-ishness spread all too thick can be detected in the work of Ronald L. Numbers' Science and Christianity in Pulpit and Pew, for example.

This book, however, sweetly succeeds where others like Numbers' caustically falter. Chapter seven, for example, stands as a well-chosen course that tastefully investigates the early efforts of the American Scientific Affiliation. Chapter four, which deals with the Jewish Theological Seminary's efforts in the 1940's, is another surprisingly tasteful look at the relations of faith and science. The rest of the book is similarly palatable, deftly covering the exclusion of John Dewy, going over the ambiguity of military chaplains, and giving off an appetizing aroma now and then into the existence of Time magazine's (June 18, 1951) atomic deacon: William G. Pollard (see Physicist & Christian).

Reviews
Gilbert argues that conflicts between science and religion caused remarkable episodes where American culture was "assembled and integrated." His historical analysis, which begins with the Scopes antievolution trial of 1925 and ends with the construction of the Sermons from Science pavilion in the Seattle World's Fair of 1962, concludes that these episodes affected Americans "across class, professional, regional, and religious boundaries." He believes that the most important were the Scopes trial, which shattered a nineteenth-Century compromise between mainstream Protestantism and a populist science of common sense, and postwar realization of the perils of the atomic age, which led to political, religious, and intellectual critiques of professionalized science.

Gilbert, a professor of history, eschews the fine details of historical scholarship in favor of a pleasingly broad view. His dramatis personae includes not only scores of scientists, religous leaders, theologians, and politicians, but also filmmakers, popular authors, and public intellectuals of nearly every stripe. Gilbert is chiefly concerned with these peoples' connections with organizations and institutions, for example the American Association of the Advancement of Science, the Moody Bible Institute, the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion, the Religious Research Association, the Committee on Cultural Freedom. He also discusses a similarly wide range of scientific, religious, and popular periodicals, books, and movies such as the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, Astounding Science Fiction, Immanuel Velikovsky's Worlds in Collision, and the Moody Institute's documentary (produced for the U.S. Air Force!) God of the Atom.

Gilbert's book succeeds rather well, for it provides the reader with the joy of discovering how all these come together in a surprisingly beautiful web of lives struggling with the deepest questions about our world and our place in it.

The Symbolic Species: The Co-Evolution of Language and the Brain

The Symbolic Species: The Co-Evolution of Language and the Brain
Terrence W. Deacon | 1998-01-01 00:00:00 | W. W. Norton & Company | 527 | Biology
This revolutionary book provides fresh answers to long-standing questions of human origins and consciousness. Drawing on his breakthrough research in comparative neuroscience, Terrence Deacon offers a wealth of insights into the significance of symbolic thinking: from the co-evolutionary exchange between language and brains over two million years of hominid evolution to the ethical repercussions that followed man's newfound access to other people's thoughts and emotions. Informing these insights is a new understanding of how Darwinian processes underlie the brain's development and function as well as its evolution. In contrast to much contemporary neuroscience that treats the brain as no more or less than a computer, Deacon provides a new clarity of vision into the mechanism of mind. It injects a renewed sense of adventure into the experience of being human.

Hidden Nature: The Startling Insights of Viktor Schauberger

Hidden Nature: The Startling Insights of Viktor Schauberger
Alick Bartholomew | 2005-11-25 00:00:00 | Adventures Unlimited Press | 288 | Conservation
Viktor Schauberger, 1885-1958, was a radical pioneer of the study of the subtle energies in nature and the importance of living water in all natural processes. From unusually detailed observations of the natural world, he pioneered a completely new understanding of how nature works. He foresaw, and tried to warn against global waste and costly ecologial destruction of our age. Here are his insights in contemporary, accessible language.

His amazing discoveries--which address sick water, ailing forests, climate change and, above all, renewable energy--have dramatic implications for how we need to work with nature and its resources. Protesting the harmful effects of modern technology, Schauberger applied his theories to create prototypes for pollution-free energy machines.
Reviews
An absolute must read to understand the power of nature and water in particular.

Water is my main focus for staying healthy and finally found a revolutionary device that is creating high energy living water for me on the basis of Victor Schauberger's incredible insights way ahead of our time.
Reviews
With no formal training in the sciences, Schauberger made a "spiritual" connection with Nature. He understood that the Universe is not complex, and the Laws of Nature are actually very simple, since the highest wisdom passes directly from the brain into the heart.

This allowed him to understand how human interaction is destroying Nature, and how balance could and should be maintained so everything would flourish. "Highly ordered systems lose stability when their environment suffers deterioration." He predicted that a decrease in biodiversity in nature would lead to an increase in violence and a degeneration of spiritual qualities in humans. He also predicted how deforestation would lead to more violent weather worldwide. I think we've proven these predictions as accurate, and they were made before Al Gore was even born.

But, like other visionaries who challenged the establishment, Viktor posed a threat to those who benefitted from the status quo. From their perspective Nature exits to be manipulated and exploited for the "benefit" of humanity. There is no accountability.

The book is divided into sections dealing with water, trees and energy. Some of this gets moderately complex, but understanding the exact workings of how a tree pumps sap based on temperature gradient is not necessary to comprehending the basis of balance in Nature. The most fascinating discussion involved water, and the fact that it is a living entity.
Reviews
You will have a very comprehensive view of how the world works after reading this book. Amazing amount of information in this book.
Reviews

Reviews
I wish I would have discovered this book forty years ago (& 37 years before it was printed)- I do this New Age, holistic, alternative lifestyle stuff for a living & this book is far beyond anything I've ever encountered.

How anyone can start out daydreaming on a riverbank & end up inventing a flying saucer travelling 1500 miles per hour with antigravity properties that broke through the roof of its manufacturing plant.

And speaking of plants, Viktor's tree realizations and H2O's role on Earth is so different than anything ever conceived.

And speaking of conceived, it is very straightforward to conclude that if Germany would have discovered Viktor Schauberger's gadgets sooner, Germany would have been viktorious in World War II.

Art, Myth and Ritual: The Path to Political Authority in Ancient China

Art, Myth and Ritual: The Path to Political Authority in Ancient China
K. C. Chang | 1988-10-15 00:00:00 | Harvard University Press | 160 | China
Reviews
If you are a serious student of Chinese history and culture, you must own, not just read, this book. Its cross-disciplinary perspective makes it a book you will find yourself returning to on a regular basis as your own knowledge and understanding of Chinese history and culture grows. Passages once oblique or of little interest to you previously, will suddenly become the glue of new associations and insights.
Reviews
This is the most succinct statement of the late K.C. Chang's views of early Chinese civilization. Many of his opinions are controversial--for example, his view of shamanism in ancient China and his interpretation of the characteristic decorations on bronze vessels--but they are creative, original, and have influenced an entire generation of historians. Once you read his brief and incisive discussion of the resources necessary to produce a bronze vessel, from mining the ore to casting the piece, your appreciation of these artifacts will never be the same again. This kind of book is rare and admirable: concise, well written, and brimming with provocative ideas.
Reviews
Art Myth and Ritual sets out an elegant yet convincing theory regarding the nature of the early Chinese state and the technological, ideological and social foundations on which it rested. By combining archaeology, classical studies and anthropology, Prof. Chang (who is regarded as the international dean of Chinese archaeology by scholars on both sides of the Taiwan strait as well as in Europe and North America) provides his readers with a dynamic view of ancient Chinese statecraft and the religious ideas that made it possible.

This book remains the single most concise statement of Chang's theoretical contribution to the archaeology of the Chinese Bronze Age. It is also simply written, well-illustrated and an excellent beginning point for the serious student of Chinese archaeology.

With Chang's magnum opus: "The Archaeology of Ancient China" sadly out of print (at time of writing), readers must make do with this volume to get a sense of his scope of vision, analytical depth and anthropological insight.

As one of K.C.s final generation of students, I must admit to a certain bias. However, it is my professional and personal opinion that this book is still one of the best works on Chinese archaeology in any language.

Strategic US Foreign Assistance

Strategic US Foreign Assistance
Rhonda L. Callaway and Elizabeth G. Matthews | 2008-10-01 00:00:00 | Ashgate | 236 | Politics
In a post-Cold War environment, questions about the recipient country's human rights have been central to the debate concerning aid allocation. The United States (US) has included human rights as a major component of its foreign policy agenda beginning with the Marshall Plan and more recently with Plan Colombia designed to combat drug trafficking. Long-term strategic US relationships further demonstrate the battle between human rights and national security with the post-September 11, 2001 environment stressing the importance of strategic allies in the war on terrorism. However, there exists a paradox regarding US foreign assistance: does it really address human rights or is it merely another instrument in the US foreign policy toolbox? This insightful book addresses several key themes and questions revolving around the complex nature of US foreign policy and human rights.

Single-Pollen Genotyping (Ecological Research Monographs)

Single-Pollen Genotyping (Ecological Research Monographs)
Yuji Isagi,Yoshihisa Suyama | 2010-11-26 00:00:00 | Springer | 127 | Biology

Pollination is one of the most important processes in plant reproduction. It directly influences reproductive success and fitness and the genetic structure of the plant population. Methods exist to infer the pattern and distance of pollen dispersal, but direct observation of the movements of individual pollen grains during pollination is not feasible owing to their small size. Single-pollen genotyping is a novel technique for genotyping a single pollen grain. In this book, the principles, the experimental protocol, and several applications of this method in studies of plant ecology, reproductive biology, and evolutionary genetics have been described. More specifically, the information is useful for the analysis of linkage disequilibrium, intraspecific genetic variation, chromosome mapping, and the origins of polyploidy. It is also essential for achieving sustainable and optimal crop yield and is vital to agriculture and forestry. Written by pioneer researchers, the book provides novel research approaches that are proving useful in a growing number of fields. This volume is intended to encourage new and continued applications of single-pollen genotyping among many disciplines in the future.

Imag(in)ing Otherness explores relationships between film and religion, aesthetics and ethics. The volume examines these relationships by viewing how otherness is imaged in film and how otherness alternately might be imagined. Drawing from a variety of films from differing religious perspectives--including Chan Buddhism, Hinduism, Native American religions, Christianity, and Judaism--the essays gathered in this volume examine the particular problems of "living together" when faced with the tensions brought out through the otherness of differing sexualities, ethnicities, genders, religions, cultures, and families.

Reviews
I found this book to be very helpful over other books. I like the style of writing. It was easy for me to read and understand than a other books I have read on the subject. The examples are also meaningful and relavent for new users. I found other books to be too abstract, or go into too much detail on topics that are not useful for new users. I would give it 5 stars, but I agree with others that the book isn't very good for reference.
Reviews
Cheep and very good introduction into Verilog. I'm currently using this book very heavily. I look at the examples very heavily, but haven't really read it strait through. I jump all over the place depending on what my implementation requires.
Reviews
Verilog is probably the most common package for modelling digital circuits. Navabi provides detailed instructions on how to use it for many types of circuits. We see how Verilog can provide different levels of modelling. From the Register Transfer Level to doing higher level synthesis. This lets you simulate either a small circuit, to great depth, or to scale to much larger sets of transistors.

The testbenching ability of Verilog is emphasised. Vital in checking the validity of performance of your circuits, before you tape out to silicon. One of Verilog's strengths is how its testbenching can save you time and money. Provided you take full advantage of it.
Reviews
This is an excellent book for beginners. I especially like how the examples are organized. It starts with the basic ones and ends with a complete working CPU. The later examples use the earlier ones as basic modules, which is very helpful for beginners.

The materials included in the CD are very useful with the exception of the software, which is outdated now. Hope the latest software will be included in the CD with the new edition of the book.
Reviews
This book contains many useful examples of real design applications with various coding styles. It is a very good reference for the students who start to learn Verilog for the first time. It describes from structural to behavioral level design with emphasis on synthesizable codes. Students can learn not only the verilog language itself but also the hardware system design concepts and flow. The CPU design chapter is a very excellent example of showing how to approach a complex design task step by step.

Reviews
If you are starting out in Oracle PL/SQL, this book and their online help HTML/PDF is the only source you are going to need. All other books out in the bookshelves are garbage. This is one of the best books out of shelf-full of bad books on PL/SQL. Index on the back of the book is incomplete to say the least. I believe any good programming book should have extensive index, since nobody has the time to go through the whole book, and we need to refer to index for different things as we work on a project. So far, of all the books, and I have a collection now, this book is the most comprehensive book, if you can find what page to look.

I've found this book very helpfu
Reviews
If you're totally new to pl/sql programming, this is a good book. The explainations are simple and easier to understand than other books that I assume expects you to have some experience. This book gives you some good samples for starters but after finishing this book, I recommend you get a more hardcore book. You could follow the next book you buy with ease and learn a little more. One problem is that this book mentions things that are covered in later chapters, so you might have to go back to the index and jump around a litte (other books do this butthey do it more often).
Reviews
For the novice user, chapters 1 through 8 give a good description of the language. I was able to understand how the language works and do the exercises. From chapter 9 until the end, I guess the authors assume that the debugging chapter was enough to start debugging their examples. Even some the examples on the CD-ROM did not execute.

Week 3 is the worst if you do not have the Oracle software listed in chapter 1, but it is worth the read. At least you can impress the interviewer at your next interview.

If you want to learn a little about Oracle and have some Visual Basic experience, try Nick Snowden's Oracle with Visual Basic. It is mainly SQL, but I got a better view of how Oracle operates.

I used the 21-Day Book for Visual Basic 5 and learned a lot (first time I had ever used VB). I was expecting the same level of learning from this book and was highly disappointed.

As for a good PL/SQL book, I am still looking.
Reviews
I started learning pl/sql a couple of weeks ago. I am halfway through the book(i am not doing a chapter a day:). I find it very easy to comprehend ,even by a novice. I think it is a really good start if you know some sql. There are a few small flaws(typo errors) which are no problem.

Freaks, Geeks & Asperger Syndrome: A User Guide to Adolescence

Freaks, Geeks & Asperger Syndrome: A User Guide to Adolescence
Luke Jackson | 2002-08-15 00:00:00 | Jessica Kingsley Pub | 224 | Special Needs
Have you ever been called a freak or a geek? Have you ever felt like one? Luke Jackson is 13 years old and has Asperger Syndrome. Over the years Luke has learned to laugh at such names but there are other aspects of life which are more difficult. Adolescence and the teenage years are a minefield of emotions, transitions and decisions and when a child has Asperger Syndrome, the result is often explosive.
Luke has three sisters and one brother in various stages of their adolescent and teenage years but he is acutely aware of just how different he is and how little information is available for adolescents like himself.
Drawing from his own experiences and gaining information from his teenage brother and sisters, he wrote this enlightening, honest and witty book in an attempt to address difficult topics such as bullying, friendships, when and how to tell others about AS, school problems, dating, relationships and morality.
Luke writes briefly about his younger autistic and AD/HD brothers, providing amusing insights into the antics of his younger years and advice for parents, carers and teachers of younger AS children. However, his main reason for writing was because "so many books are written about us, but none are written directly to adolescents with Asperger Syndrome. I thought I would write one in the hope that we could all learn together."
Reviews
This is an excellent book from a very bright kid who suffers from this syndrome. It is written from a British point of view but should be beneficial regardless of country of origin. Now if I can just get my 33 year old son to read it.
Reviews
I love this book!! As a of parent 4, the oldest being an 11 yo boy with AS it was the most helpfull (and I'v read alot!!). Cause its writen by a 13 yo boy with AS its also a fun cute at times funny read. It helped so much with the nagging questions you have as a parent..like weather or not to tell them of there dx?? or why do they do that all the time and should I stop them?? I first read this when my son was first dx with AS at 7...I'm rereading it now that he is in Adolescence, Then I will have him read it. I think he will very much enjoy it as he can so relate with Luke. I have asked his Middle school teachers to read it aswell. Never really understood what whent on in my boys head untill reading this book. Must read for all adolescence with AS and thier parents and support team. Its nice to know there is a light at this tunnel called Aspergers and its kinda cool. Aftet reading this book my new song for life is "I can see clearly now" by bob marley.
Reviews
Oh, I wish I had paid attention to the other reviews. So sorry I wasted my money on this. It was recommended by my son's school so I naively thought it might be beneficial to my own teenager. IT'S NOT. It's audience is truly British teens as there is a lot that needs to be translated into American English (at least culturally). This kid has no clue the conflicts faced by an American teen so his advice misses the mark. For a teenager who is on the autism spectrum, there are some glaring omissions in his story/advice that are difficult for my own son to get past (like he mentions his family repeatedly but at no time does he mention his dad). The book desperately needs editing and revamping in order to market to an American audience. Personally don't purchase it (I'm trying to figure out if I can get a refund so I can mail it back!)
Reviews
This book was recommended to me by a support group for Aspie teens, and I was fascinated by Luke Jackson's frank portrayal of his life as an Aspie. At times, his writing lacks polish, but the fresh perspective on a puzzling disorder more than makes up for any flaws in the writing. This is a recommended read for parents of children "on the Autism Spectrum" and for anyone who wants to know more about Asperger's Syndrome. Jackson's small book is a huge achievement.
Reviews
of life with AS. This is a fantastic book by a thirteen year old with Asperger Syndrome. As soon as I finish reading it I plan to read it to my son.

The book is written as a self-help book for teens who have AS or Autism, but also has explanations for teachers, parents and others. I especially like the parts where he details how his thinking processes work. It explains so much.

The author also goes into details about variations on the syndrome that he has not personally experienced, so it does cover more than just his experience. There is also an extensive resource list in the back.

This is a great book for teens and tweens who are on the autism spectrum and for their family members and teachers. The author is from Britain, so there are a few words and cultural differences that US readers will note, but these are minor.
