Top 10 Rome (EYEWITNESS TOP 10 TRAVEL GUIDE)

Top 10 Rome (EYEWITNESS TOP 10 TRAVEL GUIDE)
Reid Bramblett,Jeffrey Kennedy | 2008-02-15 00:00:00 | DK Travel | 192 | Rome
Drawing on the same standards of accuracy as the acclaimed DK Eyewitness Travel Guides, each book in DK's Top 10 series uses evocative color photography, excellent cartography, and up-to-date travel content to create a reliable and useful pocket-sized travel guide.

Dozens of Top 10 lists provide vital information on each destination, as well as insider tips, from uncovering a city's most memorable sights to finding the best restaurants and hotels in each neighborhood. And to save you time and money, there's even a Top 10 list of Things to Avoid.

Each Top 10 contains a pull-out map and guide that includes fold-out maps of city metro systems, useful phone numbers, and 60 great ideas on how to spend your day.
Reviews
Excellent and almost complete. For what ever reason does not list the NH Da Vinci Hotel.
Reviews
The "Top Ten" is a nice, compact guide. The "Top Ten Rome" was helpful and the maps and metro info & bus route info was helpful since we purchased a Roma Pass which was great, but lacking bus route information. The guide actually helped us utilize our Roma Pass. We found that while all roads may lead to Rome, once there, you can so easily loose your way. If you have a short time and want to make the most of your time in city, these guides help you to identify the highlights and do a good job at it. I'm replacing my Rick Steves' guides with these.
Reviews
These books are fantastic for trip planning - simple to use and very easy to understand. Look forward to using it!!
Reviews
I'm of the theory that you're best served with two travel books - a pocket sized, quick reference book and a larger, more indepth book. The pocket sized book is the one that fits into a cargo pants pocket or a jacket pocket.

I got back from a trip to Rome and while everyone had their tomes from Lonely Planet or Fodor's out at dinner, the DK Top Ten Rome book was the one that was taken from my hands and passed around. The foldout map helps a lot and as a result, I was the navigator as we walked the streets of Rome.

If you have an infinite amount of time to see everything in Rome, then you'll need a great book to cover everything. If you're doing a multi-city Italian tour and only have a few days in Rome, it's good to have a book like this to keep as a quick reference guide.
Reviews
My friend bought the thicker full version of Italy tour book but she rarely pulls it out to use it during our trip because it's too heavy. This one is so much lighter to use and small size that it tucks away neatly in my small handbag. I recommend this highly to those who likes backpacking with light luggages!

A Sound of Thunder (Tale Blazers)

A Sound of Thunder (Tale Blazers)
Ray Bradbury | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | Perfection Learning | 41 | Children's Books
In "A Sound of Thunder", Time Safari, Inc. offers the greatest hunting trips ever--any year, any animal. But they don't guarantee you'll come back, or what you'll find if you do. And in "Night Call, Collect", who is harassing Emil Barton, the last man in the universe? After decades of waiting on Mars, these twisted phone calls could kill him! Winner of a Peabody Award.
Reviews
'A Sound of Thunder' and 'Night Call, Collect' are the two short stories that have been dramatized here. Originally part of the 'Bradbury Thirteen' radio series from 1986, these radio dramas have become very difficult to find. Here they have been re-released in a nice protective package. These productions (of which there are five other releases from D. H. Audio) are of the highest caliber you find in modern or classic radio dramatizations alike. The stories are science fiction classics the like of which only Ray Bradbury can deliver. They will both frighten and thrill you with their brilliance. I am glad to see them available once again.
Reviews
Unbelievably good, with a shocking conclusion. Ray Bradbury is already a name well-known in the Household of Good Fiction, but he outdid himself with this one. Superb reading from a great author!
Reviews
The smallest action can do a lot in the longrun. That is what the book, "Sound of Thunder",

portrays. In it, four men go back in time to the prehistoric ages to kill a dinosaur for sport. The

organizer made sure that all precautions were met so they would not change any future events.

One of them stepped on a butterfly, and when they got back they found that the human race has

changed due to the death of one butterfly millions of years ago. The language changed, and

their way of thinking changed, all due to what is called the "butterfly" effect. Which goes a little

something like this:

A butterfly flaps its wings, which causes the wind to change direction a little, blowing pollen

toward the direction of a rhinocerous. The rhino sneezes, startling a nearby herd of zebras, and

cause a stampede.

It goes on. You get the idea. Ultimately, you'll find that the story is very well constructed.

I read the book, "Sound of Thuder," for English class two years ago. I was assigned to do a

presentation of it. It was the only one, out of sixteen, short stories that I actually read for that

class, because I could not stop reading. For months, I thought as if my actions would someday

cause a big change such like the butterfly in the story. Yesternight, I was laying on my bed,

remembering the story, and since it was short, I figured maybe I can get a copy off the internet. I

found this site instead, and wanted to comment on it. It was excellent. I loved it, and I hope to

read more stories such as this, as I look forward to my senior year in high school.
Reviews
This Bradbury classic is a very great way to keep a person of any gender and of all ages entertained. That is if your into sci-fi thrillers that have to do with side effects of time travel. It's not very long and it is extremely easy to read. It is full of great action and suspense. It is a great story to also read in the claasroom. I highly reccommend it.
Sincerely
Micah (a bradbury fan)

User review
A good mix of technical and business information
Gary Orenstein explains the world of storage and it does so from two perspectives: technical and business. He starts with the ins and outs of various storage technologies, and delves into why one should choose one over the other. He speaks to the technical folks that want to perhaps move their enterprise toward an IP storage technology, and he speaks to the buyers that need to convince their managers to plunge thousands of dollars on storage technology. Storage is becoming a multi-billion industry all into itself and it all has happened in over a decade. The vast amount of storage required in virtually any industry from finance to life sciences to the military, requires the storage industry to move at a rapid passé, and for the IT managers to keep up with a very fast moving industry.

It is not easy, however, to keep up without some help. Orenstein's IP Storage Networking does just that, which is to provide a detailed overview of the technology and the industry. After the overview and background on storage hardware and software, the author quickly goes into building effective storage network roadmaps. The reader quickly learns the differences between Direct Attached Storage (DAS), Network Attached Storage (NAS) and Storage Area Networks (SAN). The difference between file-based storage of NAS and block layer storage of SAN is discussed in detail, and the reader is made aware of the situations where one is preferred over the other. The author really pushing for IP based storage (SAN), where the core IP network infrastructure already in place can be used. The histories of these different technologies are also interesting. The intelligence of storage has moved from server platforms to disk subsystems and with IP storage, to within the network layer fabric. This allows the end systems to be rather dumb, and the already in place infrastructure to be utilized further. The problem arises when the current Fibre Channel protocol of NAS needs to be upgraded to an iSCSI or iFCP, which are IP-based protocols. Traditional NAS is more flexible because it is OS and file system type independent, but DAS is more optimized and faster because it is attached to the server. SAN fits into the sweet spot between the two, but a traditionally relies on a Fibre Channel protocol for communication. This is where the IP storage protocols come into play as they try to standardize on the communication backbone and infrastructure, and still be able to keep up with the demand. The good news is that Gigabit and 10Gig Ethernet are on the horizon, and are able to meet the needs of SAN storage. The issue then becomes migration paths and plans to IT managers, and the authors spends a great deal of time on that topic.

One of the key things that managers need to keep in mind is that their IP connectivity infrastructure goes hand in hand with their IP storage infrastructure in the future. The good advantage of this model is that administration and maintenance will be simpler goes forward, but the current state of the enterprise maybe far from that point. Fibre Channel protocols may already be in place, and ripping it out maybe costly. A phased approach is suggested throughout the book for such scenarios, and options such as gateways, routers, switches that can translate one to the other are explored in detail.

Let us not loose focus on why we are spending all this money on storage technology: we want to achieve business continuity. Well, there are six different patterns that the author explores in his book:

1. Simple backup of data

2. Disk redundancy where the data is stored more than once

3. Failover where there are at least two of everything

4. Point-in-time copy where check-pointing of data takes place as data changes

5. Wide-area replication where the entire data center can failover to another site upon a disaster

6. Wide-area replication and failover where the backup site can literally pickup where the primary left off.

As you can imagine, simply talking about business continuity is no longer enough. The 24/7 scenario takes an entire new meaning with each one of these architectural patterns, and the business mangers and IT architects need to balance the cost versus ROI at every step of way. As we move to the scenarios where Wide-area networking plays a role, the author shows a dramatic increase in cost and complexity. Now we have to calculate the Round Trip Time of data, and congestion on a connection between two sites, which we may have little or not control over.

I would recommend this book to any IT manager, architect and designer that need to come up to speed with the fast passé world of storage technology.

Regionalism in the European Union

Regionalism in the European Union
Peter Wagstaff,Joyce Quin | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | Intellect (UK) | 204 | Europe
This text provides an examination of the balance between state and region, centre and periphery, capital and province, within a variety of member states of the European Union. In each case there is analysis of the affirmation of regional identity in a historical context, the growth of regional development, and the dynamics of region/state and inter-regional competition and cooperation. The book questions what it means to be Welsh, or British: Breton, or French: Catalan, or Spanish. It asks questions like - what does it mean to be European? And what are the relationships between categories of belonging?

Tropical Climatology: An Introduction to the Climates of the Low Latitudes, 2nd Edition

Tropical Climatology: An Introduction to the Climates of the Low Latitudes, 2nd Edition
Glenn R. McGregor,Simon Nieuwolt | 1998-04-09 00:00:00 | Wiley | 352 | Weather
Climatology, the scientific study of climate, is not only concerned with explaining why a locations or regions climate is like it is but also with describing the nature and availability of the climate resource for a wide range of human activities. This subject is of great relevance to the tropics as climate in many ways controls the lives and economic activities of the approximately 2400 million people living in tropical regions. Tropical climates also have effects that reach far beyond the limits of the regions where they actually prevail: the global general circulation is largely driven by the export of considerable amounts of heat energy from tropical to extratropical latitudes: a large part of all atmospheric water content originates from the tropics, and intermittent tropical phenomena, like El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO), not only influence the climates over extensive tropical areas but many parts of the extratropics. The climate sensitivity of populations and economic production in the tropics also makes these regions especially vulnerable to any negative impacts arising from human-induced climate change. Tropical Climatology aims to provide a geographical viewpoint on the physical processes in the tropical atmosphere: to offer explanations of how a locations climate is a product of these processes and to highlight the implications of tropical atmospheric behaviour and climate change for those living in the tropics. This is the second edition of the book and reflects the substantial developments in the field of tropical climatology which have taken place over the two decades since the publication of the first edition. New and updated material has been included on the nature of the general tropical circulation, the monsoons, the quasi-biennial oscillation, the 40-50 day tropical circulation, the El Nino Southern Oscillation phenomenon and its climatic impacts, tropical disturbances, the characteristics of regional tropical climates and climate change in the tropics. The readership of the book remains essentially the same as that for which the first edition was intended; second to third year students in geography and the environmental sciences who have some background in climatology. The updated reference list will, however, provide an entry point for non-specialist postgraduates into the field of tropical climatology.

Mathematics of Digital Images: Creation, Compression, Restoration, Recognition

Mathematics of Digital Images: Creation, Compression, Restoration, Recognition
| 2006-09-18 00:00:00 | | 0 | Computer Graphics

This is a major revision of the author's successful book Mathematics of Computer Graphics. It still focuses on foundations and proofs, but now exhibits a shift towards digital image compression, restoration, and recognition. Topology is replaced by Probability and Information Theory (with Shannon's source and channel encoding Theorems) which are used throughout. Several fractal methods are given in the service of Compression, along with linear transforms (hence FFT, DCT, JPEG, wavelets etc), recent neural methods, and the ubiquitous vector quantisation. Optimising for the Human Visual System is a subtheme. The superiority of Pyramid methods with respect to entropy is proved. Restoration offers convolution/deconvolution against noise and blurr. Recognition explores not only the Hough and Radon transforms, Statistical feature extraction, and Neural classification, but also Tomography, the recovery of 3-D images from 2-D data. It extends finally to multiple fractal dimensions in medical and other nature-related images.

User review
A must have
A through review of the basic concepts of image processing and their (not basic at all) mathematical foundations. Also includes THE BEST introduction to linear algebra and DSP I have encountered so far.

User review
A good book on mathematics applied to image processing
This book is quite academic in tone, but practical in content. It is more of a math book that uses imaging in its examples than a book about imaging that uses math as a tool. It does a good job of starting from the beginning in any mathematical topic it explains, going through an explanation of the theory including proofs, and almost always showing at least one imaging example to explain each mathematical topic. Exercises are included, but these are not generally proofs in the classical sense. Instead, you may be asked to draw a diagram or image proving a theorem, or be asked to explain how a particular image proves a theorem. Answers to selected exercises are in the back of the book. Because this book has such good explanations on subjects such as the SVD and information theory, it might be useful to students that are not that interested in imaging simply because the analogies made to imaging make the mathematical theory quite clear. However, the last two parts of this six part book are very much aimed at those who are interested in image processing. I notice that the table of contents is not shown here, so I do that next:

Part I - THE PLANE

User review
A popular pick for advanced self-study.
College-level collections strong in either science or computer science - into the intermediate studies levels - will want to add MATHEMATICS OF DIGITAL IMAGES: CREATION, COMPRESSION, RESTORATION, RECOGNITION to their collections. These three elements are key to digital imaging - and the math needed to carry out all these components are explored in a textbook which offers both theory and practical applications and exercises. College-level courses will want to consider this as a classroom text on the subject, but specialty libraries will also find it a popular pick for advanced self-study.

Paul Van Tongeren | 2005-04-30 00:00:00 | Walter de Gruyter | 763 | German
The Nietzsche Dictionary elucidates in detail some 300 terms from Nietzsche's vocabulary. The first volume presents some 65 of them. The number of occurrences is given, as are possible foci in his use of a word, word-forms and word-formation, synonyms and related words. Using numerous instances and examples, the various meanings of each word are presented, together with the components of the meaning and semantically relevant contexts for the particular word. In addition, Nietzsche's use of the word is localised in terms both of language history and the history of philosophy, and the structure of the meaning is described and elucidated by argument using results from Nietzsche research. The articles may also include a commentary on particular instances which display special difficulties, a description of the reception of the word concerned, and a bibliography.

The book was in perfect condition, but the information in it was lacking. It had no statistical information outside of what skills your character develops. I heard that the World Companion has the statistical info.
Reviews
I bought this after the game has been around for 2 years. While some of the information was quite dated, I did find this to be helpful with some of the basics. The average LOTRO player can probably get all the info they need on-line, but for those who do want to have a good understanding of good number of the basics...this does provide that. There is another expansion coming out soon. So we are really due for a version 3.0
Reviews
Maps to everything, Information on each class and skills, everything you need to know about crafting. It does have the class quests in this book and the crafting quests. This book does not have any other quest information in it. Very well made book not on flimsy paper all color just not one of those black and white manuals
Reviews
With all the patches/"Book"s/updates/changes that have come out since LOTRO's release, this book is quite outdated in information. Some of the training guide info is off, map areas released after original release like Evendim are not included. Is still a good book for a beginner to get the hang of some of the basics and basic maps.
Reviews
This guide has some usefulness but is VERY VERY outdated. Many of the skills and map locations are just wrong or missing. It's an MMO. They change constantly and Turbine has been updating almost monthly. Bound guides just don't work for MMOs. Only option is to subscribe to some online strat guide that keeps up to date or just go to the LOTRO Lorebook.

The Family Jensen

The Family Jensen
William W. Johnstone | 2010-01-01 00:00:00 | Pinnacle | 484 | Fiction Other
I really liked this book and enjoyed reading it. I did get a little bit lost because it is actually 4 stories in one. The stories are related but jump around in time. I have read most of the Eagle series and loved that series. I have read a few of the Mountain Man series. If I had read more of that series I don't think I would have gotten lost. Even if you get lost, it still an enjoyable read.
I give it a 4 star rating just because I didn't think it was as good as the Eagle books. I am look forward to future Family Jensen books and plan on purchasing them as soon as they come out.

Project Valuation Using Real Options: A Practitioner's Guide

Project Valuation Using Real Options: A Practitioner's Guide
Prasad Kodukula, Chandra Papudesu | 2006-01-01 00:00:00 | | 1 | Finances and Money
"To invest or not to invest?" Business leaders frequently are faced with this question on new and ongoing projects. The challenge lies in deciding what projects to choose, expand, contract, defer, or abandon. The project valuation tools used in this process are vital to making the right decisions. Traditional tools such as discounted cash flow/net present value assume a "fixed" path ahead. But real world projects face uncertainties, forcing you to change the path often. This book introduces a more practical approach to project valuation known as real options analysis. Derived from options theory in modern finance, this approach is based on the Nobel Prize–winning work of three MIT economists.

Project Valuation Using Real Options provides a systematic approach to project valuation that will enable you to minimize investment risks, exercise flexibility in decision making, and maximize returns.

Key Features

Discusses why traditional valuation methods such as discounted cash flow, net present value and decision tree analysis are not sufficient in today's uncertain world

Explains the real options approach in a step-by-step manner which is easily understood and does not require an extensive financial background on the part of the reader

Shows you how to make the correct investment decisions, achieve strategic alignment of projects, increase project flexibility, and sustain competitive advantage

Presents multiple scenarios and real world examples from technology, telecommunications, pharmaceuticals, and other industries to illustrate success stories, challenges, and the true value of real options analysis

Hydraulic Fluids

Hydraulic Fluids
Peter Hodges BSc. F.Inst.Pet. | 1996-07-12 00:00:00 | Butterworth-Heinemann | 167 | Engineering
* Reviews the development of modern hydraulic fluids
* Discusses the application and selection of hydraulic fluids through the investigation of their physical and chemical properties related to the operational requirements.
* Offers guidance on suitable maintenance routines

Since the first use of water as a hydraulic medium in the late 18th century, hydraulics has become an indispensable discipline of engineering science. Enormous technological advances have been made in the intervening years, but this has not been reflected in the available literature on the numerous fluids involved.

Based on 40 years of experience with Shell in Norway, this reference text brings together a comprehensive coverage of the behaviour and selection of hydraulic fluids. It includes a full analysis of recent advances in synthetic oils - media which will inevitably become more dominant as natural products become more scarce.

Hydraulic Fluids provides an overview that both students and professionals involved with hydraulics, whether concerned with the mechanical components or system design or selection and maintenance of the fluids themselves, will refer to again and again as it provides relevant information on all the major hydraulic fluids in a single volume.
Reviews
Peter Hodges does an excellent job of touching on all of the highlights of hydraulic fluids. The book is broken down into the following chapters: Introduction, Types of Hydraulic Media, Mineral base oils, Additives, Synthetic Oils, Rheology, Compressibility, Anti-wear properties, Oxidation Stability, Demulsibility, Aeration problems, Filterability, Specifications, Hydraulic Fluids for military and aerospace applications, Selection of a suitable hydraulic fluid, test methods for hydraulic media, contamination, deterioration and maintenance, analysis of used hydraulic oil, fire-resistant fluids, hydraulic brake fluids, future perspectives, health and safety and hydraulic fluids and the environment.

It is a very thin book at only 167 pages! But, its comprehensive nature makes it well worth having. I have been referring to it for a number of years. While the book does not go into any great tribological or rheological diatribes, it provides a solid technical overview in plain language and does not dwell too much on theories and formulas. Other books can fill in the physics and engineering aspects of lubrication, but this is a good first place to start when pondering a fluid related question.

Norrie Disease - A Bibliography and Dictionary for Physicians, Patients, and Genome Researchers

Norrie Disease - A Bibliography and Dictionary for Physicians, Patients, and Genome Researchers
Philip M. Parker | 2007-07-18 00:00:00 | ICON Group International, Inc | 120 | Programming
In March 2001, the National Institutes of Health issued the following warning: "The number of Web sites offering health-related resources grows every day. Many sites provide valuable information, while others may have information that is unreliable or misleading." Furthermore, because of the rapid increase in Internet-based information, many hours can be wasted searching, selecting, and printing. Since only the smallest fraction of information dealing with Norrie disease is indexed in search engines, such as www.google.com or others, a non-systematic approach to Internet research can be not only time consuming, but also incomplete. This book was created for medical professionals, students, and members of the general public who want to conduct medical research using the most advanced tools available and spending the least amount of time doing so.
