Evaluating Hospital Policy and Performance, Volume 18: Contributions From Hospital Policy and Productivity Research (Advances in Health Economics and Health Services Research)

Evaluating Hospital Policy and Performance, Volume 18: Contributions From Hospital Policy and Productivity Research (Advances in Health Economics and Health Services Research)
Jos L. T. Blank,Vivian Valdmanis | 2008-01-01 00:00:00 | JAI Press | 270 | Economics
Hospitals worldwide command the majority of any countries' health care budget. Reasons for these higher costs include the aging of the population requiring more intensive health care treatments provided in hospitals, the relatively high costs of labor in this labor intensive industry and payment systems that may encourage inefficient behavior on the part of hospital managers and physicians. Governments are seeking to instruments to mitigate this cost rise. Liberalizing hospital markets, deregulation, changing budget systems and changing ownership are only a few examples of attempts to make hospitals more efficient.

Hospital industry responds in various ways to changing market conditions and legislation. In most western hospital markets we observe hospital consolidation, acquisitions, mergers and the founding of several types of network and hospital associations. The question is whether this trend also contributes to more efficiency.

In this volume a number of outstanding internationally known scholars in the field of productivity measurement and health economics provide the reader with an excellent insight in the complexity of the issue. They explain that there is no straightforward panacea or recipe for the issues addressed. It is shown that the composition of the demand for care, the economic context, environmental and geographical conditions affect the outcomes. Policymakers should therefore take these nuances into account. A policy of increasing productivity starts with knowledge and insights in the complexity of the issue. The book therefore advocates the development of a strategy of collecting relevant data and conducting academic research that meet the standard of the state of the art. The book provides two illustrative examples of such a strategy in Finland and Australia.

The authors have avoided as much as possible the technical jargon and complex mathematics and statistics involved in this research area. Therefore the book is par excellence suitable for policymakers and hospital managers, as well as for graduate students of health economics and health administration.

*Avoids, as much as possible, technical jargon and complex mathematics and statistics
*International in scope

The Copenhagen Connection

The Copenhagen Connection
Elizabeth Peters | 2001-01-01 00:00:00 | Avon | 384 | Fiction Other
I have been a fan of Elizabeth Peters for just over a year, but have been devouring her books quickly. This is one of my favourites. It is quite short but extremely well written with a sharp sense of humour. The main characters are enjoyable, intelligent (although they don't always act it) and endearing. It combines adventure, comedy and romance beautifully with an emphasis on the last two. The plot is also intriguing (you would never, ever guess what is going on) and the descriptions of Denmark are spot on.

If you enjoy Janet Evanovich then you would also relish this little gem. It is of a similar style but the heroine is not as manic! The fast pace of the action and the humour is much the same (key difference is that it is set in Europe). My only complaint was that I would have liked more, more!

Wind and Trees

Wind and Trees
M. P. Coutts,J. Grace | 1995-09-29 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 504 | Conservation
Winds over topography and inside forests produce mechanical reactions in trees, and eventually failure in stems and roots when stressed by storms. The mechanics of these reactions and the physiological responses to wind in leaves, stems and root systems, and the important ecological consequences of wind-throw are described in this book. Management techniques of forests in windy climates are detailed, including the use of models predicting risk of wind damage. It is clear that the whole field of wind effects on trees has benefited from recent multi-disciplinary research, and significant advances in knowledge of most parts of the subject have been made in the last decade. This book brings the up-to-date theories, methodologies and results together, and gives the reader a sense of coherence in this complex but fascinating field.

Act III in Patagonia: People and Wildlife

Act III in Patagonia: People and Wildlife
William Conway | 2005-07-11 00:00:00 | Island Press | 360 | Popular Economics

Patagonia. The name connotes the exotic and a distance that seems nearly mythical. Tucked toward the toe of South America, this largely unsettled landscape is among the most varied and breathtaking in the world-aching in its beauty as it sweeps from the Andes through broad, arid steppes to pristine beaches and down to a famously violent sea. It is also home to a vast array of rare wildlife as diverse and fascinating as the region itself.

Act III in Patagonia is the first book to take an in-depth look at wildlife and human interaction in this spectacular area of the world. Written by William Conway, former president of the Wildlife Conservation Society, the book is unique in its concentration on the long Patagonian shoreline--populated by colorful cormorants, penguins, elephant seals, dolphins, sea lions, and numerous species of whale--and an increasing number of human beings.

Threatened by overfishing, invasive species, artificially abundant predators, and overgrazing, the Southern Cone of Patagonia is now the scene of a little-known conservation drama distinguished by the efforts of a dedicated group of local and foreign scientists determined to save one of the Earth's least-inhabited places. From tracking elephant seals in the Atlantic to following flamingos in the Andes, Act III in Patagonia takes readers to the sites where real-life field science is taking place. It further illuminates the ecology of the region through a history that reaches from the time of the Tehuelche Indians known by Magellan, Drake, and Darwin to the present.

Reviews
Many modern wiews about nature. More pictures and maps would have added to usefulness for tourist.

Special Set Linear Algebras introduced by the authors in this book is an extension of Set Linear Algebras, which are the most generalized form of linear algebras. These structures can be applied to multi-expert models. The dominance of computers in everyday life calls for a paradigm shift in the concepts of linear algebras. The authors belief that special set linear algebra will cater to that need.

Thinking in the Spirit: Theologies of the Early Pentecostal Movement

Thinking in the Spirit: Theologies of the Early Pentecostal Movement
Douglas Jacobsen | 2003-10-30 00:00:00 | Indiana University Press | 440 | Catholicism

This book is about the boisterous beginnings of the American Pentecostal movement and the ideas that defined that movement during those formative years. It follows a group of men who rethought the Christian faith in light of their new experience of God. Thinking in the Spirit aims to provide scholars and general readers who know little or nothing about Pentecostalism with an introduction to the ideas of the movement's most articulate early spokespersons, and to provide Pentecostals with a non-judgmental historical source to help them in their theological reflections. Douglas Jacobsen focuses on the individuals who formed the original brain trust of this now gigantic religious movement. In a 25-year burst of creative energy at the beginning of the 20th century, these leaders articulated almost all the basic theological ideas that continue to define the Pentecostal message in the United States and around the world.

Reviews
This is a book of great historical significance. It brought back so many memories. How did we get to where we are today? This book helps illuminate the ecclesiastical leadership of the first couple of decades and how their ministry helped shape the course of events, beyond their time. Definitely worth reading and having in your library.
Reviews
In her review in the Christian Century, Edith Blumhofer of the Institute for the Study of American Evangelicals said this was one of only a very few "must read" books dealing with Pentecostalism. She is absolutely right. This book is written in a lively style very different from some of the boring theology I have read in the past. It is fun to read, and if you have any interest in Pentecostals this book is an absolute page turner. This book is not just about theology - it is full of biography and the general history of the movement told in a prose style that reads like a good novel. All in all it is the best book I have ever read on the topic.

This book is written in an easy-to-understand format with step-by-step procedures to analyze data using a variety of statistical techniques. In this second edition new and updated examples are provided as well as additional statistical tests. Topics in this book include statistical procedures for analyzing means, descriptive statistical methods, correlations, regression, and non-parametric statistical tests. At the end of each chapter, the author has provided sample problems and solutions.
Reviews
We use the latest edition of this book in our safety course to provide students an overview of statistics. The errors contained in the previous edition have been corrected and new examples have been added. The book covers various statistical examples in a step by step format.
Reviews
This book would be fantastic except there are way too many errors - especially for a book about statistics and statistical error.

This book should cost 1/10 the price because you have to go through and find and correct all the errors - especially frustrating when using this text in a class.

IT Performance Management (Computer Weekly Professional)

IT Performance Management (Computer Weekly Professional)
| 2003-11-14 00:00:00 | | 0 | Miscellaneous

IT Performance Management addresses the way organizations should balance the demand and the supply of information technology, optimizing the cost and maximizing the business value of IT.

In this book several aspects of IT performance management are described. The way this management is executed and the techniques, which should be used, depend on the maturity of the relationship between the IT function and the lines of business of an organization. The foundation of the authors' approach is based on the flow of money and related management objectives. However, performance management is primarily based on perceptions. Therefore, this book introduces the IT value perception model. This model describes four separate levels of perception for the business value of IT. If the demand and the supply of IT do not share the same perception level, the balance is lost, which will lead to friction and inefficiency within an organization.

This book is not about what is good or what is bad, but rather is about the 'what', the 'why' and to a limited extent the 'how' of managing the performance of IT. Therefore, the book finishes with a 'back-to-business' section in which a self-assessment checklist, a potential growth path and ten next steps are provided. This enables the reader to start applying this book in his every day working environment immediately.

IT Performance Management:
* Provides an overview of best practices and available thinking on the subject of IT cost and value
* Describes the subject of IT cost and value related to management issues on IT strategy, portfolio management, service management, architecture and sourcing
* Addresses differing degrees of maturity between IT and the business, illustrated by case studies

Practical and easy to integrate into day to day decision making immediately
Deals with multiple perceptions on the role of the IT organisation in the business
Discusses the topics currently on the CIO's agenda

Properties and Applications of Thermoelectric Materials: The Search for New Materials for Thermoelectric Devices

Properties and Applications of Thermoelectric Materials: The Search for New Materials for Thermoelectric Devices
Veljko Zlatic, Alex C.Hewson | 2008-01-01 00:00:00 | Springer | 345 | Other Engineering
The NATO sponsored Advanced Research Workshop on “Properties and Applications of Thermoelectric Materials” took place on the Croatian island of Hvar over the period 20-26 September, 2008. This subject has attracted renewed interest as concerns with the efficient use of energy resources, and the minimization of environmental damage, have become important current issues. There has been the recognition that thermoelectric devices could play a role in generating electricity from waste heat, enabling cooling via refrigerators with no moving parts, and many other more specialized applications. The main problem in realizing this ambition is the rather low efficiency of such devices for general applications. The workshop addressed that problem by reviewing the latest experimental and theoretical work in this field and by exploring various strategies that might increase the efficiency of thermoelectric devices. A measure of the potential of a particular material for an efficient thermoelectric device is the figure of merit ZT. This dimensionless ratio depends on the electronic conductivity, the total thermal conductivity and the thermopower (Seebeck coefficient) of the material.

Statistical Modeling by Wavelets

Statistical Modeling by Wavelets
Brani Vidakovic | 1999-01-01 00:00:00 | Wiley-Interscience | 408 | Mathematics
A comprehensive, step-by-step introduction to wavelets in statistics.

What are wavelets? What makes them increasingly indispensable in statistical nonparametrics? Why are they suitable for "time-scale" applications? How are they used to solve such problems as denoising, regression, or density estimation? Where can one find up-to-date information on these newly "discovered" mathematical objects? These are some of the questions Brani Vidakovic answers in Statistical Modeling by Wavelets. Providing a much-needed introduction to the latest tools afforded statisticians by wavelet theory, Vidakovic compiles, organizes, and explains in depth research data previously available only in disparate journal articles. He carefully balances both statistical and mathematical techniques, supplementing the material with a wealth of examples, more than 100 illustrations, and extensive references-with data sets and S-Plus wavelet overviews made available for downloading over the Internet. Both introductory and data-oriented modeling topics are featured, including:
* Continuous and discrete wavelet transformations.
* Statistical optimality properties of wavelet shrinkage.
* Theoretical aspects of wavelet density estimation.
* Bayesian modeling in the wavelet domain.
* Properties of wavelet-based random functions and densities.
* Several novel and important wavelet applications in statistics.
* Wavelet methods in time series.

Accessible to anyone with a background in advanced calculus and algebra, Statistical Modeling by Wavelets promises to become the standard reference for statisticians and engineers seeking a comprehensive introduction to an emerging field.

Reviews
This book was just almost useless to me-Rick Steves' London book is WAY WAY much better. WIll never buy Froomer's books again-only used it to thumb through. Our trip to Paris and London was wonderful , but not by these books.
Reviews
Although I haven't read it cover-to-cover, this looks very useful. My son is spending the spring semester at a university near London and this was a gift for him.
Reviews
I bought this book, along with several others, for a trip I took to London with my husband and 13 year old daughter. We already had a hotel so we didn't use that section, but we found it to be a great reference book for almost anything we needed quick information on. Museums, places to visit, train and subway information, the proper amount to tip, it was all in there. Definitely worth the investment.
Reviews
This is an excellent resource for anyone planning to visit London. It made our trip enjoyable, saved us money, and equipped us with information that helped us navigate London easily. It contains information on everything from "must see" attractions, to tips on exchanging money. My husband and I were able to prioritize our schedules and take advantage of special deal unknown to travelers. The topics are nicely organized with clear and accurate information. We will not travel again without a Frommer's guide.

The only two tips we picked-up that were not in the guide were:

1. Shop at Tesco for your food - This is were all the locals shop so you will not pay tourist prices. Our hotel was selling us a 1/2 liter bottle of water for $12 US dollars. We went to Tesco and paid .60 cents for 2 liters.

2. Look into dot2dot - Hotel transportation can be expensive. A cab ride can cost $100-150 US dollars. The guide tells you about the underground, which comes out to about $15.00, but if you take dot2dot and share a ride you can get a round trip ticket for $66.00. This is great if you have heavy luggage and do not want to drag it around on the underground.

I hope this helps. Enjoy!

Reviews
There is an intimidating array of travel guide options when one is planning a trip, especially if you're going to as common a destination as London! I checked out everything available (and up-to-date, because these guides do change annually, in many cases!) from my library. I was drawn to Frommer's 2008 for several reasons:

1. Readability. The information was conveyed in such a way that I didn't at all feel intimidated by how many choices I had. There is a good balance in the amount and kind of information given in the reviews of attractions, pubs, hotels, etc., and I was able to quickly figure out whether I wanted to add a site on my itinerary or not.

2. Organization. There is a lot of easy, helpful information about traveling to London (including packing for your trip) in the beginning of the guide. This is followed by "top ten" lists for various attractions (pubs, sites, etc.), and then a really handy series of itineraries for "Seeing London" in "a day," "two days," or "three." The city is divided into various neighborhoods, and so it is very easy to find places to stay, restaurants, and attractions no matter where you find yourself. I found this feature especially useful when organizing my itinerary.

3. Usefulness. Reviews are honest and upfront about things you really want to know - from the bathroom sizes in boutique hotels, to whether you want to go for a restaurant's signature steak-and-kidney pie. Each region has a list of hotels and restaurants that cater to a range of budgets, from very expensive to options for the budget traveler. Frommer's also includes an excellent symbol system, including one for "over-rated attractions" and an "insider's alert" for unique finds that you might not see in other guides. There is also a handy map of the London Underground lines, and a tourist-friendly city map tucked in the back of the guide.

I looked at a few different guides to try and supplement my travel plans, but honestly, the only book I'll be bringing will be the Frommer's 2008 guide. Lonely Planet London would be useful as a supplement for those interested in more cultural information, or a perspective for the alternative lifestyle (gay and lesbian, vegetarian). My only complaint is that while there are low-cost hotels listed, cheaper options like hostels are not covered, so students and shoestring budget travelers may need to resort to the internet for help in that regard. Ultimately, I was very pleased with this guide both for its helpfulness in preparing for my trip, and its suitability as a pocket guide when I'm in London.

The Culture of Vengeance and the Fate of American Justice

The Culture of Vengeance and the Fate of American Justice
Terry K. Aladjem | 2008-01-14 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 266 | Jurisprudence
America is driven by vengeance in Terry Aladjem's provocative account - a reactive, public anger that is a threat to democratic justice itself. From the return of the death penalty to the wars on terror and in Iraq, Americans demand retribution and moral certainty; they assert the "rights of victims" and make pronouncements against "evil." Yet for Aladjem this dangerously authoritarian turn has its origins in the tradition of liberal justice itself - in theories of punishment that justify inflicting pain and in the punitive practices that result. Exploring vengeance as the defining problem of our time, Aladjem returns to the theories of Locke, Hegel and Mill. He engages the ancient Greeks, Nietzsche, Paine and Foucault to challenge liberal assumptions about punishment. He interrogates American law, capital punishment and images of justice in the media. He envisions a democratic justice that is better able to contain its vengeance.
Reviews
Justice, not Vengeance - this riveting book makes the thoughtful case that substituting vengeance for justice is a problem for democracy as such. Especially in the US, society exercizes vengeance instead of justice. From TV cop shows, malpractice lawsuits, issues of race and the death penalty, author Terry Aladjem argues we are substituting the cheap nickel of vengeance for the dollar of moral justice - and we all pay the price of that meanness. Tracing his argument in civil and legal discourse, and in literature, from the Greeks through South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Aladjem's argument is bold and convincing. Indeed, it evoked in me that fore-heading smiting, "why didn't I see that?!" reaction of things that are patently true.

A must-read for anyone interested in where our legal, civil, and social systems are heading.
Reviews
Aladjem argues here that modern liberal democracy is founded on a "mistake": the misguided idea that the impulse to vengeance can be peaceably transformed into a rational system of punishment. This cannot be done, he thinks; the vengeful impulses are barely contained and waiting to burst out. He sees our system as hitting a breaking point in which our society may explode into crisis.

The author is certainly right that punitive justice in America has become steadily more extreme in terms of the severity of sentences & number of people behind bars; it certainly needs reform. But is this really a fundamental crisis in democracy itself? Or a demonstration, in the Marxist vein (with a touch of Freud as well), that liberal democracy is beset with internal contradictions? I doubt it. For one thing, Aladjem ignores the counterexample of the many liberal democracies in Europe, which have not seen any such dramatic growth in the criminal justice system, and so displays no internal "contradiction" in liberalism. This suggests the problems is something about America, not democracy itself, though the author doesn't explore this possibility.

This book feels like one of those fashionable leftist critiques of liberalism that were popular in the 1970s and 1980s, which also often used to predict the coming crisis of our society as it foundered on its internal contradictions. Needless to say that never happened, and I doubt it will now. There are many problems facing American society, but the idea that democracy is under threat of collapse due to the repressed desire for revenge is just not convincing.
Reviews
Not only political theorists but anyone who cares about the fate of American justice (and justice more broadly) should consult this provocative and important book. Scholars of liberalism, in particular, will benefit from its challenge to the notion that liberalism has somehow solved the political problem of punishment. It should unsettle assumptions and prompt a rethinking of the moral and theoretical premises of liberalism. Highly recommended.
Reviews
This is a brilliant analysis of a deep and troubling tendency in American culture. If you have time for only one serious book this summer, let this be the one--while it is an erudite examination of vengeance across time and place, it has special relevance for the upcoming election.
Reviews
Professor Aladjem supports his observations about our vengeful society with the works of our civilization's philosophers. With words from Sartre, Nietzche, the Bible, and even a joke from Freud, he presents the reader with insights and observations we must face if we are to progress as a people. He looks at the myth of closure, the struggle to be treated fairly by life, and the influence media has on our self-perception. This book would be a useful addition to any student or teacher who wishes to understand the difference between self-destructive and biased reactions and reasoned and thoughtful responsibility.

What Color Is the Sacred?

What Color Is the Sacred?
Michael Taussig | 2009-01-01 00:00:00 | | 1 | Philosophy
Over the past thirty years, visionary anthropologist Michael Taussig has crafted a highly distinctive body of work. Playful, enthralling, and whip-smart, his writing makes ingenious connections between ideas, thinkers, and things. An extended meditation on the mysteries of color and the fascination they provoke, What Color Is the Sacred? is the next step on Taussig’s remarkable intellectual path.
Following his interest in magic and surrealism, his earlier work on mimesis, and his recent discussion of heat, gold, and cocaine in My Cocaine Museum, this book uses color to explore further dimensions of what Taussig calls “the bodily unconscious” in an age of global warming. Drawing on classic ethnography as well as the work of Benjamin, Burroughs, and Proust, he takes up the notion that color invites the viewer into images and into the world. Yet, as Taussig makes clear, color has a history—a manifestly colonial history rooted in the West’s discomfort with color, especially bright color, and its associations with the so-called primitive. He begins by noting Goethe’s belief that Europeans are physically averse to vivid color while the uncivilized revel in it, which prompts Taussig to reconsider colonialism as a tension between chromophobes and chromophiliacs. And he ends with the strange story of coal, which, he argues, displaced colonial color by giving birth to synthetic colors, organic chemistry, and IG Farben, the giant chemical corporation behind the Third Reich.
Nietzsche once wrote, “So far, all that has given colour to existence still lacks a history.” With What Color Is the Sacred? Taussig has taken up that challenge with all the radiant intelligence and inspiration we’ve come to expect from him.

Tarot Shadow Work: Using the Dark Symbols to Heal

Tarot Shadow Work: Using the Dark Symbols to Heal
Christine Jette | 2000-01-01 00:00:00 | | 264 | Do It Yourself
"In Tarot Shadow Work, Christine Jette bravely takes the practice of tarot readings to new depths and places many people fear to go. She shows us how we can use the cards to trigger awareness in ourselves of troubling aspects of our lives and histories, and then go beyond discovery to use the cards as tools for healing. This is part of the work that needs to be done with tarot in this new century."
—Rachel Pollack, author of 78 Degrees of Wisdom and the forthcoming Shining Tribe Tarot

Deep within our psyches, the unconscious holds our forbidden feelings, secret wishes, and creative urges. Over time, these "dark forces" take on a life of their own and form the shadow—a powerful force of unresolved inner conflicts and unexpressed emotions that defies our efforts to control it. The shadow takes its shape from a menagerie of archetypes, each recognizable throughout time and around the world—troubling characters who thrive within our persona. The shadow is sabateur, martyr, victim, addict, sadist, masochist, or tyrant; all the dark figures that prey on the lighter qualities of the human personality.

The shadow also represents those latent talents and positive traits that were banished from us at some time along our life path: artistic, musical, athletic, or creative talents. An undeveloped ability, a dream that has gone unexpressed, a fantasy of what might have been—these too make up the personal shadow, the lost parts of ourselves.

Tarot Shadow Work shows you how to free yourself from the shackles of the shadow's power. Through tarot work, journaling, meditation, creative visualization, and dream work, you will bring the shadow into the light. This book is ideal for those who are in recovery from a serious addiction or illness, as well as any person seeking a deeper understanding of his or her true self.

By exploring the dark and uncharted territory of the unconscious mind, you will work towards understanding and integrating the shadow. No prior knowledge of the tarot is required. You will learn to use the cards as a tool to help you break free from negative patterns and self-destructive behavior.

Once we realize that we are made of both light and darkness, life will start to make sense. When we accept our dual natures, we stop sabotaging our own efforts and learn to be compassionate with others and with ourselves.

Political Economies of Landscape Change: Places of Integrative Power (GeoJournal Library)

Political Economies of Landscape Change: Places of Integrative Power (GeoJournal Library)
James L. Jr Wescoat,Douglas M. Johnston | 2007-11-19 00:00:00 | Springer | 221 | Economics

"Places of Power: Political Economies of Landscape Change" asks how politics and economics transform the landscapes we inhabit. This volume explores the connections between political economy and landscape change through a series of conceptual essays and case studies. In so doing, it speaks to a broad readership of landscape architects, geographers, and related fields of social and environmental research. The book consists of an introductory essay with nine chapters commissioned from leading geographers, landscape architects, political scientists, and economists, and a concluding essay on implications for future landscape inquiry and design.

The book is organized in three major sections. Part one, titled Landscapes of Struggle, Possibility, and Prosperity, includes a chapter on new axioms for reading the landscape followed by two chapters that read processes of economic development and distress in mountain landscapes of the U.S. and South America. Part Two on Political and Economic Driving Forces of Landscape Change includes two chapters each on political driving forces (political constructs and institutions) and economic driving forces (environmental economics and global financial markets). Part Three, titled Integrative Landscape Change compares innovative rural landscape policies in Europe and the U.S., and draws implications for future landscape inquiry, planning, and design.

Troubling Violence: A Performance Project

Troubling Violence: A Performance Project
M. Heather Carver,Elaine J. Lawless | 2009-04-15 00:00:00 | University Press of Mississippi | 160 | Domestic Violence

Troubling Violence: A Performance Project follows the collaboration between performance studies professor M. Heather Carver and ethnographic folklorist Elaine J. Lawless. The book traces the creative development of a performance troupe in which women take the stage to narrate true, harrowing experiences of domestic violence and then invite audience members to discuss the tales. Similar to the performances, the book presents real-life narratives as a means of heightening social awareness and dialogue about intimate partner violence.

"Troubling violence" refers not only to the cultures in our society that are "troubling," but also to the authors' intent to "trouble" perceptions that enforce social, cultural, legal, and religious attitudes that perpetuate abuse against women. Performance, this book argues, enhances ethnographic research and writing by allowing ethnographers to approach both their field studies and their ethnographic writing as performance. The book also demonstrates how ethnography enhances the study of performance. The authors discuss the development of the Troubling Violence Performance Project in conjunction with their own "performances" within the academy.
Reviews
This review is excerpted from the STORYTELLING MAGAZINE, April-May 2010 issue, written by Jo Radner. Jo is a friend of mine, and I'm copying it in order to provide information to AMAZON readers.

"Read this book," Jo writes, "if you have any interest in performing or presenting stories to heal. Carver and Lawless write forcefully, dramatically (indeed, often as script) about developing a student performance troupe to tell women's stories of domestic violence. Their personal stories...are interwoven wih accounts of the evolution of this undertaking in which stories 'serve to bring violence and abuse into the room,' into 'a safe space we have created.'" Jo concludes by stating: "This innovative text breaks the conventions of academic writing, just as the Troubling Violence project itself breaks performance and ethnographic conventions. Both project and writing are powerful forces."

Fundamentals of Spread Spectrum Modulation (Synthesis Lectures on Communications)

Fundamentals of Spread Spectrum Modulation (Synthesis Lectures on Communications)
Rodger E. Ziemer | 2007-08-31 00:00:00 | Morgan and Claypool Publishers | 86 | Engineering
This lecture covers the fundamentals of spread spectrum modulation, which can be defined as any modulation technique that requires a transmission bandwidth much greater than the modulating signal bandwidth, independently of the bandwidth of the modulating signal. After reviewing basic digital modulation techniques, the principal forms of spread spectrum modulation are described. One of the most important components of a spread spectrum system is the spreading code, and several types and their characteristics are described. The most essential operation required at the receiver in a spread spectrum system is the code synchronization, which is usually broken down into the operations of acquisition and tracking. Means for performing these operations are discussed next. Finally, the performance of spread spectrum systems is of fundamental interest and the effect of jamming is considered, both without and with the use of forward error correction coding. The presentation ends with consideration of spread spectrum systems in the presence of other users.
