13 Secrets for Speaking Fluent Japanese

13 Secrets for Speaking Fluent Japanese
Giles Murray | 1999-06-30 00:00:00 | Kodansha International | 184 | Japanese
13 Secrets for Speaking Fluent Japanese presents tested shortcuts for Japanese language acquisition. Identifying two groups of people who actively and effectively study Japanese to the point of fluency --successful non-native learners and Japanese children --Giles Murray has collected from both groups the most rewarding and universal techniques which can be put to immediate use by both beginner and advanced students of Japanese.

This book is designed for people who have tried orthodox textbooks and failed, people who know a little Japanese but don't have the necessary time or motivation to make the transition to more serious textbooks, and people seeking to increase fluency using ability already acquired. It introduces new strategies for thinking, speaking and memorizing Japanese quickly, efficiently and independently. Used in tandem with a mainstream textbook, these strategies will enable any student to apply what they have learned in the classroom to real-life situations, and to speak without hesitation in natural and fluent Japanese.

With lively and entertaining commentaries, striking illustrations, two Japanese manga --including a six-page extract from Osamu Tezuka's famous Blackjack series--brainteasing puzzles, and genuinely useful example sentences, 13 Secrets offers a unique and exciting alternative to all students of Japanese.

Featuring An original manga by Tezuka Osamu All new custom-written 16-page manga 3 mini-graphic novels Over 100 illustrations Dynamic quiz format Full glossaries

Adaptive Cooperation between Driver and Assistant System: Improving Road Safety

Adaptive Cooperation between Driver and Assistant System: Improving Road Safety
Frédéric Holzmann | 2007-12-03 00:00:00 | Springer | 226 | Computer Mathematics

One of the next challenges in vehicular technology field is to improve drastically the road safety. Current developments are focusing on both vehicle platform and diverse assistance systems. This book presents a new engineering approach based on lean vehicle architecture ready for the drive-by-wire technology.

Based on a cognitive functionality split, execution and command levels are detailed. The execution level centralized over the stability control performs the motion vector coming from the command level. At this level the driver generates a motion vector which is continuously monitored by a virtual co-pilot. The integration of assistance systems in a safety relevant multi-agent system is presented here to provide first an adequate feedback to the driver to let him recover a dangerous situation. Robust strategies are also presented for the intervention phase once the command vehicle has to be optimized to stay within the safety envelope.

A Mind of One's Own: A Psychoanalytic View of Self and Object (The New Library of Psychoanalysis)

A Mind of One's Own: A Psychoanalytic View of Self and Object (The New Library of Psychoanalysis)
Robert A. Caper | 1998-12-09 00:00:00 | Routledge | 176 | Mental Health
This collection of papers, written over the last six years by Robert Caper, focuses on the importance of psychological development of distinguishing self from object, and the central role that this difficult psychological disentanglement plays in the therapeutic effect of psychoanalysis. In doing so, the author explains what differentiates the practice of psychoanalysis from psychotherapy; while psychotherapy aims to ease the client towards "good mental health" through careful suggestion and manipulation of the client's character, psychoanalysis attempts the more radical task of allowing the client to discover who he/she is and isn't. In particular, it seeks to allow the client to see the internal and external reality, clear of fantasies, with the self wholly distinguished from other people and other objects.

The Path to Tranquility [AUDIO]

The Path to Tranquility [AUDIO]
Dalai Lama | 2000-01-01 00:00:00 | | 0 | Audio Books
Wouldn't it be nice to have a handy collection of highlights from the Dalai Lama's writings and teachings?

A mezzo-mezzo book from the Dalai Lama (Ethics for the New Millennium, p. 1044). This collection of excerpts from the the Tibetan leader's writings and speeches is organized like Meditations for Women Who Do Too Muchthe reader is encouraged to meditate on a different snippet each day. The excerpts range from a description of a Calcutta hospital to a cautionary note about marriage, from a pronouncement that the media should worry more about the common good than ratings to musings on generosity. The Dalai Lama combats the deconstructionists, asserting that whenever one reads a book, one must consider the context in which the author wrote it. He trots out the clich that ``there is nothing like teaching to help one learn'' and suggests that, in order to change the world, one should start with changing one's own behavior. One wishes for a more heavy-handed editor. The readings seem thrown together randomly, and too many of the selections are utterly banal. Do we really need to spend May 12 reflecting on the fact that when the Dalai Lama loses his temper with someone, he later apologizes? Dip into this book, but don't make it your daily companion for a year.

An East Asian Model for Latin American Success (The International Political Economy of New Regionalisms Series)

An East Asian Model for Latin American Success (The International Political Economy of New Regionalisms Series)
Anil Hira | 2007-12-17 00:00:00 | Ashgate | 210 | Economics
Latin America is at a uniquely important juncture in its history and the history of development more generally. Neoliberal market-orientated policies are being called into question, growth has been volatile and equity has stayed the same or worsened. In Latin America, there is no clear direction for change. This book presents an alternative development path for Latin America based on an East Asian model. East Asia remains the only developing region so far with high stable and equitable economic development. Based on in depth analysis and the presentation of new and unique material, this study provides a new perspective on the lessons of China's rapid development and examines relations between states and companies that have led to greater success by East Asian companies entering new international markets. More importantly, it highlights how Latin American politics can and must be transformed.

A Dictionary of Medieval Terms and Phrases

A Dictionary of Medieval Terms and Phrases
Christopher Corèdon,Ann Williams | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | D.S.Brewer | 318 | England
This dictionary contains some 3,400 terms as headwords. It is aimed at the non-academic reader of history who often encounters technical words and phrases whose precise meaning is assumed by the writer. The subject matter ranges from the legal and ecclesiastic to the more humdrum words of daily life. As Latin was the language of the church, law and government records there are many Latin terms, frequently found in modern books of history of the period. Similarly, readers find Old English and Middle English terms used which may be familiar but of whose exact meaning they are uncertain. This dictionary endeavours to provide clarity to such readers. In addition to definition, etymologies of many words are offered because it is felt that knowing the origin and evolution of a word contributes to its better understanding; as a further illustration, some terms and phrases are shown in contemporary use.
Reviews
The title of this volume, though technically correct, is perhaps not the best way to view this book. For although this is indeed a "dictionary," the book is written in such a manner that almost encourages a page-by-page reading approach. In fact, once I started perusing the volume, I found for myself that it was almost better suited for me as a book to be read from cover to cover.

The volume is filled with interesting facts, descriptions, and, yes, definitions, regarding the middle ages. It is not an exhaustive coverage, encyclopedia-like book like The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church, but is rather a series of descriptions intended for the lay reader or armchair medievalist covering all facets of medieval life and custom. It is excellently written, and it will undoubtedly stir within you the desire to read and study more about a whole host of topics. Any medievalist would like to have this volume in the library. You can look things up to find definitions of now obscure terms, but you can really indulge yourself by starting at the beginning and let the book guide you, step by step and word by word, through medieval life. A truly fascinating book.
Reviews
I have used this book several times as I read novels about the medieval period. It has helped me a great deal. It's filled with valuable information and good insight. But I have encountered a few times where I was not able to find something in particular, to my disappointment. I mean it is a pretty thick book and I assumed it would have everything in it. But not so.

But it is still a valuable addition to my collection and I know I will use it often.
Reviews
Not exactly bedtime reading, it is a dictionary after all, but what a fine dictionary of medieval terms and phrases. I am researching early Anglo-Saxon England and find this a very helpful tool indeed. For the price it is a real bargain.
Reviews
What a pity this book doesn't have the "look inside" feature enabled. I almost doubted it was worth its rather steep price. But when I got a nice fat Amazon gift certificate for Christmas, I took the plunge and found that yes, it is worth it.

I've been an amateur medievalist for about 8 years and have done considerable independent reading. There are words in this book that I've never seen before (ex. leaning staffs: crutch-like sticks that the old and infirm leaned on in church, where it was forbidden to sit). There are words in this book that I've seen but not quite understood, and couldn't find in any other reference work, online or print (ex. chevauchee: warfare by attrition). There are words I've seen conflicting definitions of elsewhere; the DICTIONARY clears up the confusion (ex. garderobe: first, a place to store clothing; only later was the word used as a euphemism for an indoor privy).

This book does more than define words. Many of its entries are so comprehensive (ex. mini-histories of sheriffs and the Cistercian order) as to be encyclopedic. These encapsulations go beyond simply clarifying a particular word or phrase; they actually enhance my understanding of key aspects of the Middle Ages. Topics covered in the DICTIONARY include culture, war, heraldry, church and law, to name just a few. Medieval Latin terms get substantial exposure as well.

I own Cosman's MEDIEVAL WORDBOOK and have found it to be passable as a reference, though not much for browsing. A DICTIONARY OF MEDIEVAL TERMS AND PHRASES is a book I could almost sit and read from cover to cover, just for the joy of discovery.

Stop Arguing with Your Kids: How to Win the Battle of Wills by Making Your Children Feel Heard

Stop Arguing with Your Kids: How to Win the Battle of Wills by Making Your Children Feel Heard
Michael P. Nichols PhD | 2004-03-10 00:00:00 | The Guilford Press | 229 | Mental Health
For parents fed up with constant challenges to their authority-but who dread becoming tyrants in their own homes-this book provides a powerful new alternative to "because I said so." Trusted family therapist and author Michael P. Nichols takes on the number-one problem of parents today with the insight and humor that has made his earlier The Lost Art of Listening an enduring bestseller. Presented is a simple, easy-to-follow, yet remarkably effective way to put an end to arguments by refusing to argue back. Instead, the techniques of responsive listening help parents open up better communication in the family; create an atmosphere of respect and cooperation; and take children's feelings into account-without giving in to their demands. Loads of realistic examples help parents defuse whining and defiance and manage common conflicts with preschoolers to teens.

Reviews
I checked this book out at the library. After finishing it last night, I am very glad I didn't spend any money on it! The first part of the book isn't too bad. The author gives fairly straight-forward advice in the first half of the book. I liked his suggestion to not worry so much about why your child is arguing, but focus instead on breaking the cycle of arguing. He has an easy to read writing style that doesn't get bogged down in psychobabble. It isn't anything new...How to Talk So Your Children Will Listen...does a better job.

However, by the middle of the book I started wondering if I was still reading the same book. The tone changes, and there are some really weird off the wall comments ("You guys work it out, I'm going to mix a pitcher of martinis..") He seems to assume that all teenagers will experiment with drugs and premarital sex, and treat their parents like dirt, so we should just make sure we don't argue with them about it. Toward the end he actually says "Parenting is an impossible job". That's why I was reading this book! I don't need to read a book to find out being a parent is a hard job and I just need to lighten up! The book has an abrupt ending. It left me with a feeling that the author just said "Our time is up", and walked out of the room.

Don't waste your time reading this one. The author obviously felt he was wasting his time writing it toward the end.
Reviews
Psychology professor Michael P. Nichols, Ph.D. presents Stop Arguing With Your Kids: How To Win The Battle Of Wills By Making Your Children Feel Heard, a guide for parents to showing one's children that their feelings and thoughts matter without necessarily giving into their demands. The key to the method is refusing to argue back - one can make and stick to tough decisions, while still listening to what one's children have to say. A superb guide to the basics of responsive listening and how to break bad habits, get closer in touch with one's children, and weather the inevitable storms of adolescence. Highly recommended.

Enhancing CAD Drawings with Photoshop

Enhancing CAD Drawings with Photoshop
| 2005-01-21 00:00:00 | | 0 | Adobe Photoshop

For architects who seek better ways to communicate their vision, here is the first book that explains how to transform CAD drawings into beautiful presentational pieces using Photoshop. First you'll learn the basic Photoshop skills, then find out how to add real-world textures (i.e. granite countertops), include `entourage` (i.e. trees and people), create realistic lighting effects and reflections, and even develop mood using antique or painterly effects. All discussions are reinforced by real-world tutorials and apply to any CAD program that outputs the.dwg file format. The CD features a Photoshop demo, sample scripts, utilities, and tutorial videos. The 16-page color insert highlights inspirational before-and-after images.

User review
Enhancing CAD drawings with Photoshop
Scott Onstott has a wealth of experience in architectural graphics and with many related 2D and 3D software. In this book he offers practical advice to enhance plans, elevations, etc. from CAD software such as Autocad using Photoshop techniques.

User review
Meh.
I'm a little disappointed with this book. I got it as an architecture student looking for some inspiration and helpful tips on producing better drawings. Unfortunately, this book focuses more on technical aspects than graphic ideas. Only a few pages are in color, and there's even a section on tweaking image color that uses black and white images as examples(!). It covers a lot of things I already know about photoshop and provides lots of useless information that won't actually enhance my work.

Many of the examples aren't 'Architectural' and come off as cheesy, I'd be ashamed to pin some of them up. This is not 'Architecture' with a capitol A, this is the kind of stuff I'd expect to see at the open house for a cheap cookie cutter housing development. In fact, I'd consider many of the 'enhanced' plans to be inferior to the original CAD drawings. Lastly, Adobe Illustrator should really be included. Its a crucial link between AutoCAD and Photoshop and this book ignores it. I'll use this thing as a reference periodically when I'm in need of technical assistance, but I wouldn't recommend it. When you already know what you want your drawings to look like this book could help you with the software, but it will not teach you how to produce good work!

User review
Excellent Resource
I'm teaching a course on Architectural Digital Illustration and found this book to be an excellent text book material.

User review
Useful, but ,,.
First of all, if your life involves CAD and Photoshop, you should probably buy this book: It's very useful. Part of the reason it's useful is because there are not a lot books on this subject.

One of the greatest features about this book is its greatest flaw: the enclosed LISP program that turns AutoCad layers into Photoshop layers. What promise that has! It works great with the tiny 8.5 x11 drawings on the enclosed disc. But when you try to use that with a real drawing, say in 36` by 24` format, the drawing crashes.

User review
Great tips
I thought I knew Photoshop but I was wrong. I borrowed this book from the library but it was so good I decided to buy it.

Crypto

Crypto
Stephen Levy | 2001-01-01 00:00:00 | | 368 | Computer Science
Amazon.com Review
If the National Security Agency (NSA) had wanted to make sure that strong encryption would reach the masses, it couldn't have done much better than to tell the cranky geniuses of the world not to do it. Author Steven Levy, deservedly famous for his enlightening Hackers, tells the story of the cypherpunks, their foes, and their allies in Crypto: How the Code Rebels Beat the Government. From the determined research of Whitfield Diffie and Marty Hellman, in the face of the NSA's decades-old security lock, to the commercial world's turn-of-the-century embrace of encrypted e-commerce, Levy finds drama and intellectual challenge everywhere he looks. Although he writes, "Behind every great cryptographer, it seems, there is a driving pathology," his respect for the mathematicians and programmers who spearheaded public key encryption as the solution to Information Age privacy invasion shines throughout. Even the governmental bad guys are presented more as hapless control fetishists who lack the prescience to see the inevitability of strong encryption as more than a conspiracy of evil.
Each cryptological advance that was made outside the confines of the NSA's Fort Meade complex was met with increasing legislative and judicial resistance. Levy's storytelling acumen tugs the reader along through mathematical and legal hassles that would stop most narratives in their tracks--his words make even the depressingly silly Clipper chip fiasco vibrant. Hardcore privacy nerds will value Crypto as a review of 30 years of wrangling; those readers with less familiarity with the subject will find it a terrific and well-documented launching pad for further research. From notables like Phil Zimmerman to obscure but important figures like James Ellis, Crypto dishes the dirt on folks who know how to keep a secret. --Rob Lightner --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Publishers Weekly
The author of the 1994 sleeper Hackers reveals how a group of men developed methods for encrypting digital transmissions for use in the private sector. As the digital age was dawning in the late 1970s, a major stumbling block to delivering information and conducting transactions via high-speed networks was the lack of security from outside parties who might wish to intercept the data (even though the National Security Agency had acres of computers dedicated to protecting government secrets and even more designed to decode other countries' messages). Widely available systems only began to emerge after a range of free thinkers, including such crypto legends as Whit Diffie and Marty Hellman, began to devote their considerable mind power to the issue. After a slow start, Levy's story steadily builds momentum as the crypto pioneers do battle with the NSA, look for ways to commercialize their discoveries and fight for the federal government's approval of the strongest encryption methods. The chief technology writer for Newsweek, Levy locates the heart of the matter in the struggle to balance the need for the most effective encryption possible with the government's need to decode messages that might endanger national securityAa struggle in which privacy, so far, has prevailed. Agent, Dominick Abel . (Jan. 8) Forecast: Levy's reputation grows with each book, and publicity that links this title to his bestselling Hackers will ensure strong sales. The title is backed by a six-city author tour and national radio satellite tour. The major promo campaign online, where Levy is minor royalty, may be most effective, but the book's biggest boost will come from the planned excerpt in Newsweek.

Practical Guide To Designed Experiments: A Unified Modular Approach (Dekker Mechanical Engineering)

Practical Guide To Designed Experiments: A Unified Modular Approach (Dekker Mechanical Engineering)
Paul D. Funkenbusch | 2004-11-12 00:00:00 | CRC Press | 224 | Engineering
Many engineers and scientists have receive little or no training in designed experiments, and any courses that are available tend to be either abstract and divorced from practical considerations or strictly practical-lacking the rigor and depth necessary for true, long-term understanding.

Practical Guide to Designed Experiments: A Unified Modular Approach bridges that gap, presenting the essential material in a manner that permits rapid application to practical problems but also provides the structure and understanding necessary for long-term growth. It covers two-level and three-level full and fractional factorial design and also includes the L12 and L18 designs popularized by Taguchi. The author describes the role and selection of the system response for measurement and optimization and discusses both conventional and Taguchi approaches, noting their similarities and differences.

Clearly written and well organized, this text shows how the components of experimental design fit and work together. Offering an abundance of examples, case studies, and practice problems, it is highly suited to anyone with a basic science or engineering background but little or no previous exposure to matrix experiments or other elements of planned experimentation.

The Possibility of Knowledge

The Possibility of Knowledge
Quassim Cassam | 2009-01-01 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press | 256 | Philosophy
How is knowledge of the external world possible? How is knowledge of other minds possible? How is a priori knowledge possible? These are all examples of how-possible questions in epistemology. Quassim Cassam explains how such questions arise and how they should be answered.

In general, we ask how knowledge, or knowledge of some specific kind, is possible when we encounter obstacles to its existence or acquisition. So the question is: how is knowledge possible given the various factors that make it look impossible? A satisfactory answer to such a question will therefore need to do several different things. In essence, explaining how a particular kind of knowledge is possible is a matter of identifying ways of acquiring it, overcoming or dissipating obstacles to its acquisition, and figuring out what makes it possible to acquire it.

To respond to a how-possible question in this way is to go in for what might be called a "multi-levels" approach. The aim of this book is to develop and defend this approach. The first two chapters bring out its advantages and explain why it works better than more familiar "transcendental" approaches to explaining how knowledge is possible. The remaining chapters use the multi-levels framework to explain how perceptual knowledge is possible, how it is possible to know of the existence of minds other than one's own and how a priori knowledge is possible.

I highly recommend this book, and will buy this authors Struts 2 book when it comes out.

After having completed some introductory Java programming work, I decided to dive into struts as I wanted to implement the MVC pattern in Java. This book helped me to achieve that without further referencing other material.

Everything I needed was in this book. The first couple of chapters outline the Struts framework using a basic (but not Hello World) example followed by an elaboration of the Model, View and Controller. The rest of the book simply builds on this example to demonstrate features. I only read the first few chapters and used the rest as a reference (I don't need Tiles for example).

The book is sparse in some ways, but it is all there. I had some tricky problems I wanted to solve and all the required information was in this book - although I did need to meditate on some of the examples to figure things out. Having said that some previous experience with JSP is useful.

Recommended, looking forward to October 24.

Excellent, Clear Foundation of Struts
James Holmes's explanation of the fundamentals of Struts is very clear, thorough and specific. I am very grateful for the foundation he has given me.

User review
Deep basic introduction
Overall very good book for starters but don't expect here too much. Case study is well designed to cover most development scenarios presented in the book. However, it doesn't bother to explain how to use Struts with databases. This is a big disadvantage of the title. Besides of that if all the repeated descriptions will be removed the book might easily lose 1/3 of its weight. Nevertheless, this is not a bad book and I'll keep it as a quick reference for some while.

User review
Great introduction to struts, good reference
Overall a well written and lucid introduction to struts programming. Struts:TCR needs a better index to be a truly great reference book, but I would still recommend it to anyone starting out with struts.

User review
Can't go wrong with this one
This book presents the technical information in a straight forward and organized manner that is useful to a first time Struts user such as myself. The first portion does a fine job to describe what Struts is used for and how the pieces fit together and the second portion is superb raw reference material. Great combination.

Heidegger and Ethics

Heidegger and Ethics
Joanna Hodge | 1995-04-12 00:00:00 | Routledge | 240 | Philosophy
Heidegger and ethics is a contentious conjunction of terms. Martin Heidegger himself rejected the notion of ethics, while his endorsement of Nazism is widely seen as unethical. This major new study examines the complex and controversial issues involved in bringing Heidegger and ethics together.

Working backwards through his work, from his 1964 claim that philosophy has been completed to his first major book, Being and Time, Joanna Hodge questions Heidegger's denial that his inquiries were concerned with ethics. She discovers a form of ethics in Heidegger's thinking which elucidates his important distinction between metaphysics and philosophy. Opposing many contemporary views, Hodge proposes that ethics can be retrieved and questions the relation between ethics and metaphysics that Heidegger made so pervasive.

Literary Spy: The Ultimate Source for Quotations on Espionage and Intelligence

Literary Spy: The Ultimate Source for Quotations on Espionage and Intelligence
CE Lathrop | 2004-01-01 00:00:00 | Yale University Press; annotated edition | 496 | Misc
The Literary Spy provides a unique view of the intelligence world through the words of its own major figures (and those fascinated with them) from ancient times to the present. CIA speechwriter and analyst Charles E. Lathrop has compiled and annotated more than 3,000 quotations from such disparate sources as the Bible, spy novels and movies, Shakespeare's plays, declassified CIA documents, memoirs, TV talk shows, and speeches from U.S. and foreign leaders and officials.

Arranged in thematic categories with opening commentary for each section, the quotations speak for themselves. Together they serve both to illuminate a world famous for its secrets and deceptions and to show the extent to which intelligence has manifested itself in literature and in life. Engaging, informative, and often irreverent, The Literary Spy is an exceedingly satisfying book-one that meets the needs of the serious researcher just as ably as those of the armchair spy in pursuit of an evening's entertainment.

Nonlinear and Adaptive Control with Applications

Nonlinear and Adaptive Control with Applications
Alessandro Astolfi, Dimitrios Karagiannis, and Romeo Ortega | 2007-12-12 00:00:00 | Springer | 290 | Control Theory
Nonlinear and Adaptive Control with Applications provides a detailed treatment of the design of robust adaptive controllers for nonlinear systems with uncertainties. The authors employ a new tool based on the ideas of system immersion and manifold invariance.

Departing, in part, from the Lyapunov-function approach of classical control, new algorithms are delivered for the construction of robust asymptotically-stabilising and adaptive control laws for nonlinear systems. The methods proposed lead to modular schemes. These algorithms cater for nonlinear systems with both parametric and dynamic uncertainties. This innovative strategy is illustrated with several examples and case studies from real applications. Power converters, electrical machines, mechanical systems, autonomous aircraft and computer vision are among the practical systems dealt with.

Researchers working on adaptive and nonlinear control theory or on control applications will find this monograph of conspicuous interest while graduate students in control systems and control engineers working with electrical, mechanical or electromechanical systems can also gain much insight and assistance from the methods and algorithms detailed.

Paths of Resistance: Tradition and Dignity in Industrializing Missouri

Paths of Resistance: Tradition and Dignity in Industrializing Missouri
David R. Thelen | 1986-01-23 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press, USA | 324 | Economics
The years between 1865 and 1920 were eventful ones for the sake of Missouri. It was not only the time of Jesse James, Scott Joplin, and Mark Twain, of progressive governors Joseph Folk and Herbert Hadley, of the first general strike in St. Louis and some especially vicious vigilante activity, it was also the time when Missouri, like many other states, was being transformed by the tides of industrialism and economic growth. This social history examines the social and economic forces that resisted economic development in Missouri. Here, Thelen explores the various ways that people attempted to maintain their values and dignity in the face of overwhelming new economic, cultural, and political pressures, and analyzes the grassroots patterns that emerged in response to rapid social change. Thelen, who is one of the leading historians of the Progressive period in America, contends that people found their strength not in class solidarity or other Marxist responses but in what he calls "the resistance of folk memories", which allowed them to call upon the best elements of their collective past to help them cope with the new situation.
Reviews
This book is so interesting - especially if you are from Missouri. Missouri is such a diverse state, both geographically and politically - partly due to the distance it covers north to south. Many different cultures migrated to Missouri. This book shows that the proud folk traditions and customs helped the folks that settled here to progress as events caused the changes that go with "progress" anywhere. It belongs in anyone's collection of Missouri literature!!

Assessment and Remediation of Contaminated Sediments (NATO Science Series: IV: Earth and Environmental Sciences)

Assessment and Remediation of Contaminated Sediments (NATO Science Series: IV: Earth and Environmental Sciences)
Danny Reible,Tomas Lanczos | 2006-08-16 00:00:00 | Springer | 246 | Engineering

Contaminated sediments pose some of the most difficult site remediation issues. Contaminated sediments typically reside in spatially variable and dynamic systems subject to seasonal flow variations and episodic storm events. The volume of sediments that must be managed at particular sites often exceeds one million cubic meters, dwarfing many contaminated soil sites. These sediments are also associated with equally daunting volumes of water and efforts to remove the contamination typically entrains even more water. The environmental security of both NATO and partner countries is at risk due to the pervasive nature of sediment contamination of rivers, lakes and harbors. A NATO Advanced Research Workshop was convened in Bratislava in May 2005 to discuss current approaches to managing contaminated sediments and to identify research necessary to overcome outstanding problems.

In this text, drawn from presentations and discussion of that workshop, current approaches to the assessment and remediation of contaminated sediments will be discussed with the emphasis on in-situ management. Physical, chemical and biological approaches for the assessment and remediation of sediments are all addressed. Developing regulatory and strategic approaches are highlighted with a special emphasis on the potential for biological remediation for the management of contaminated sediments.

Beginning SQL Server 2005 Express Database Applications with Visual Basic Express and Visual Web Developer Express: From Novice to Professional

Beginning SQL Server 2005 Express Database Applications with Visual Basic Express and Visual Web Developer Express: From Novice to Professional
| 2005-12-13 00:00:00 | | 0 | SQL Server

SQL Server 2005 Express is the database component of Microsoft's Express Suite of products. It is free of charge, inherits many (nonenterprise) features from SQL Server 2005, and comes complete with development and administration tools. As such, it is an ideal database for developers and administrators to use in prototype/evaluation projects. It is also a powerful development platform for database applications on nonprofit websites, e-commerce sites, and in small offices and departments.

Author Rick Dobson provides all of the installation, configuration, administration, and development techniques that you need to build applications quickly. He focuses on techniques that are easy to learn and transparent in their real-world translations. Topics include Express Manager and T-SQL programming, and Visual Basic Express and Visual Web Developer, both with SSE, to build Windows Forms applications and to develop ASP.NET web applications.

SQL Server Express
WOW, I practically stole this book. What a deal. For a used book it is in brand new condition! The information is a little heavier then I anticipated but the spoon feeding goes down easy enough. I am almost finished with my first read through but a second will surely be needed.

The ordering, shipping and condition of the book were well beyond my expectations.

User review
Great tool!
I don't know where to begin with this book. It is such an awesome resource. Although you can get a lot of user documentation online, this book does an excellent job at helping someone new to setting everything up to really understand all of the technical jargon. The examples and explanations for Visual Web Developer and VB are great. However, I wouldn't say this book is completely for the novice, unless you are defining novice as someone proficient in VB programming and web design. And I don't know how useful this will be to an expert either. It's really great for a middle-of-the-road skill-set.

User review
Beginning SQL Server 2005 Express
So far, I like the way the book is layed out. I'm still going through it, and satisfied with results.

User review
Well Crafted, Easy to Follow, In-Depth Insight
Nowadays, it is all too common for someone with a competing interest to dis a book in the hopes of steering others away. After reading several of the negative reviews for this book, I was worried that might be happening here.

When I checked out this book in a bookstore and compared it with four others on SQL Express 2005, I found this one to be a superior presentation of the subject. It is cogent and will written, and provides analysis that goes well beyond the beginning level. The overall presentation is well crafted and easy to follow.

The type-face is small, but that just means that you get more for your money, as there is a lot of meat on these pages. The author addressed my issues supprisingly well. The insights he gave show that he has considerable experience with the subject and has thought carefully about how to present it. I highly recommend this book if you really want to understand the subject matter.

User review
Nice Intro Book To SQL Server 2005
'Beginning SQL Server 2005 Express Database Applications with Visual Basic Express and Visual Web Developer Express: From Novice to Professional' by Rick Dobson is a very nice learning tool for beginners who want to learn how to use SQL Server 2005 Express and Visual Basic Express to create database/client apps that will get the job done and done well. With ~600 page of material, the author leads you through the basics of what SQL Server 2005 and Visual Basic is and the power that these APIs have at your disposal. You'll go from a simple app and database to learning how to build these up in a logical, fun way.

If you are new to these technologies and want to learn, I feel that this is a great resource to use to flood your brain with new information. For those that complain this book isn't too good, it's not meant to be a book for uber programmers but newbies. I think if you want to learn, you ought to give this a try!

XML Pocket Reference, Second Edition

XML Pocket Reference, Second Edition
| 2001-04-01 00:00:00 | | 102 | XML

Even hot dog Web coders proficient in XML need a little refresher once and a while. Although some portions of XML are still very fluid, the handy XML Pocket Reference offers quick access to the syntax and usage rules of this next-generation language.

At the front of the book, a crash course in XML quickly spells out the important terminology, along with extremely short examples of XML, Document Type Definition (DTD), and Extensible Stylesheet Language (XSL) documents. The book also includes a nice bulleted list of cautions and rules to follow if you want to create valid XML documents. A tip section entitled, `Unlearning Bad Habits` offers handy warnings that are especially useful for those of us who occasionally slip into sloppy HTML coding behaviors that XML won't tolerate.

The remainder of the title comprises reference sections devoted to XML, DTDs, XSL, XLink, and XPointer. These sections offer a balanced mix of both straight syntax references and brief general explanations of key topics. Short examples are in abundance to illustrate usage with accompanying explanatory text. The authors are very up-front about the changing nature of the XSL, XLink, and XPointer and point out that even their freshly published material on these subjects may soon be out of date.

You won't find any big-picture look at the importance or implementation of XML in the real world. However, if you're already sold on the technology and working with it, this little guide will be a handy companion. --Stephen W Plain

Topics covered: XML overview, well-formed XML rules, using elements and attributes, syntax and usage reference to XML, DTD, XSL, XLink, XPointer.

User review
Useful, But Better Option Exists
This book is small and travels well. It does not have an index, which seems odd for a reference text, but it does have a table of contents. I find Essential XML Quick Reference (ISBN 0-201-74095-8) to be well worth the additional investment.

User review
Good book but no coverage for XML schemas
I guess it's my fault for not checking closely enough, but this book is somewhat dated now (more than two years old as of this writing). It was somewhat of an impulse buy at the book store when it looked useful after a quick scan. It had a little `2nd Edition` banner across the front cover corner and I just assumed it included coverage of schemas. The coverage of XSLT and XML in a small format is quite useful. I'll probably buy the 3rd edition when it comes out--I would have given the book 4 or 5 stars two years ago when it was first published.

User review
Merely an introduction to XML,,.
This book provides a useful overview into the basics of XML while doubling up as a quick reference to the XML specification. Handy for those that want to dabble in XML without buying a more detailed book, but then XML has so many related technologies anyone serious about XML will need more.

The O'Reilly pocket references are so concise that they are not really meant for someone who is totally new to the subject. They can however be the ideal way to provide an overview to anyone who wants to know the basics of the topic.

User review
This is a beginners book,,.
I can't possibly imagine that this book will be of any value to someone working with XML on a daily basis. It should be renamed to `a terse introduction to xml`, as it is in no way a reference. This is based on the fact that I bought it to learn XML from, and it was quite good at teaching someone with no experience in XML whatsoever the basic concepts.

If you are looking for a reference, look elsewhere. If you are just like me, and don't want to wade through hundreds of pages to get an idea of what it is all about, then you can perhaps consider it. Since it is so wrongly named, I give it three stars. But as an introduction it really deserves five.

User review
Half part useful, another half part not
This book is ok, the first half part is pretty good.
It covers XML basic and DTD very well, but it does not
cover schema; it covers XSLT/XSLFO also, although there are something inaccurate inside; its part for XLink and XPointer is
useless and wrong; and there is nothing for XML database or
XSP. This book may be helpful, but you need another book as or to really learn XML basic.

Daniel, IBM certified developer for XML and related technologies.

Revaluing French Feminism: Critical Essays on Difference, Agency, and Culture (A Hypatia Book)

Revaluing French Feminism: Critical Essays on Difference, Agency, and Culture (A Hypatia Book)
Nancy Fraser,Sandra Lee Bartky | 1992-05-01 00:00:00 | Indiana University Press | 208 | Philosophy

"... Fraser and Bartky have brought the encounter between U.S. and French feminism to a new level of seriousness."  -- Ethics

In the last decade, elements of French feminist discourse have permeated and transformed the larger feminist culture in the United States. This volume is the first sustained attempt to revalue French feminism and answer the question: What has been gained and what has been lost as a result of this intercultural encounter?

Interviews with Simone de Beauvoir open the book; essays by French feminists Sarah Kofman and Luce Irigaray follow; the North American contributors are Judith Butler, Nancy Fraser, Diana J. Fuss, Nancy J. Holland, Eleanor H. Kuykendall, Dorothy Leland, Diana T. Meyers, Andrea Nye, and Margaret A. Simons.

Reviews
Nancy Fraser and Sandra Lee Bartky take French feminism--as it was introduced to the Anglo-American world by the work of Elaine Marks' and Isabelle de Courtivron's New French Feminism (1980)--and reconsider it today, in the context of developing postmodern thought/feminisms. Inaugurating third wave feminisms, the writings of Hélène Cixous, Catherine Clément, Christine Delphy, Luce Irigaray, Julia Kristeva, and Monique Wittig bear both a deconstructive-psychoanalytical strand of thought--holding an upper hand today in the English-speaking academia, as expressed in the Cixous, Irigaray, Kristeva triad--and a materialist subversive, countercultural instance. Focusing on issues of "identity, difference and femininity" (5), Fraser and Bartky rejoin French feminisms with Anglo-American feminists of a difference understood as a battle field between essentialist and non-substantialist significations. The presence of the American positive "gynocentric feminism" (Iris Young, Nancy Chodorow, and Carol Gilligan) vs. the universally emancipated subject is renegotiated today. Identity and difference are again problematized into "identities" and "differences" (6) within Derridean meaning indeterminacy and dislocated subjectivities. The question then returns to a full circle: do feminist postmodern identities of difference reaffirm an essentialist project? This is a useful collection of articles on challenging Franco-American representations of the feminine in Western philosophy, psychoanalysis, and French theories of discourse.
