Noise: A Novel

Noise: A Novel
Darin Bradley | 2010-01-01 00:00:00 | Spectra | 240 | Fiction Other
Noise isn't about a ragtag band of survivors holing up and waiting it out. It's about the exodus, the egress from Eden and the concomitant Fall. It's about the subsuming of personal identity into the usefulness and forward progress of the group's identity. It's about letting your past drown in a pond. Your Orphean descent into the Underworld. Your Amaranth where you will put down new roots in a faraway place.

Darin gives the reader plenty of explode-y action and up-close-and-personal scenes one might expect of an apocalyptic novel, but one thing's for certain: the characters are the heart of this book, and after reading Noise, don't be surprised to find yourself echoing a mantra of the Group in Noise:

"You did the right thing."

Here's hoping this is the first of many sharp, smart, resonant novels from Darin Bradley.

Technology and Applications of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (Ocean Science and Technology, V. 2)

Technology and Applications of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (Ocean Science and Technology, V. 2)
Gwyn Griffiths | 2002-11-28 00:00:00 | CRC Press | 368 | Ships
The oceans are hostile. Gathering information on life, the seabed, indeed any topic, is incredibly difficult. Autonomous Under Vehicles are robots that are revolutionising the way researchers and industry obtain data. Advances in technology have resulted in capable vehicles that have made new discoveries on how oceans work and have dramactically reduced the cost to industry of surveying the seabed. This book describes the technologies that have made this happen and a host of applications from fish abundance studies to finding diamonds beneath the sea. It is essential reading for those wanting to make the best use of autonomous vehicles.

Cellular Oscillatory Mechanisms (Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology)

Cellular Oscillatory Mechanisms (Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology)
Miguel Maroto | 2008-08-14 00:00:00 | Springer | 168 | Engineering

Living systems are fundamentally dynamic and adaptive, relying on a constant throughput of energy. They are also, by definition, self-sustaining over the full range of length and time scales. This characteristic combination of constant adaptive flux and emergent persistence requires that the properties of all living systems must, at some level, be cyclical. Consequently, oscillatory dynamics, in which system properties rise and fall in a regular rhythmic fashion, are a central feature of a wide range of biological processes. The scale of biological oscillations covers enormous ranges, from the sub-cellular to the population level, and from milliseconds to years.

While the existence of a number of biological oscillations is widely appreciated, there are many oscillatory phenomena that are much less obvious, albeit no less important. Since oscillations reflect periodic quantitative changes in system properties, their detection and characterisation relies on the quantitative measurement of a system over an extended period. Until recently, such measurements were difficult to obtain at cellular or sub-cellular resolution, and relatively few cellular oscillations had been described. However, recent methodological advances have revealed that oscillatory phenomena are as widespread in cells as they are at larger scales.

The chapters in this book provide an introduction to a range of both well known and less familiar cellular oscillations and serve to illustrate the striking richness of cellular dynamics. The contributions focus particularly on elucidating the basic mechanisms that underlie these oscillations. The essentially quantitative nature of oscillations has long made them an attractive area of study for theoretical biologists, and the application of complementary modelling and experimental approaches can yield insights into oscillatory dynamics that go beyond those that can be obtained by either in isolation. The benefits of this synergy are reflected in the contributions appearing in this book.

The current resurgence in interest in interdisciplinary approaches to cell and molecular biology stems in part from the increasing availability of system-wide data on the state of the components of cellular regulatory networks. Alimiting factor in these approaches is often the lack of suitable ways of characterising a network state in terms of summary quantitative features. Without such features, it is typically difficult to gain new qualitative insight into the operating logic of all but the simplest networks. In this regard, oscillatory phenomena provide ideal exemplars for systems approaches, since oscillations have clear summary features that prove invaluable in combining mathematical models with experimental data.

Sense and Sensibility (Penguin Classics)

Sense and Sensibility (Penguin Classics)
Jane Austen | 2003-04-29 00:00:00 | Penguin Classics | 368 | Classics
New chronology and further reading; Tony Tanner's original introduction reinstated

Edited with an introduction by Ros Ballaster.
Though not the first novel she wrote, Sense and Sensibility was the first Jane Austen published. Though she initially called it Elinor and Marianne, Austen jettisoned both the title and the epistolary mode in which it was originally written, but kept the essential theme: the necessity of finding a workable middle ground between passion and reason. The story revolves around the Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne. Whereas the former is a sensible, rational creature, her younger sister is wildly romantic--a characteristic that offers Austen plenty of scope for both satire and compassion. Commenting on Edward Ferrars, a potential suitor for Elinor's hand, Marianne admits that while she "loves him tenderly," she finds him disappointing as a possible lover for her sister:
Oh! Mama, how spiritless, how tame was Edward's manner in reading to us last night! I felt for my sister most severely. Yet she bore it with so much composure, she seemed scarcely to notice it. I could hardly keep my seat. To hear those beautiful lines which have frequently almost driven me wild, pronounced with such impenetrable calmness, such dreadful indifference!
Soon however, Marianne meets a man who measures up to her ideal: Mr. Willoughby, a new neighbor. So swept away by passion is Marianne that her behavior begins to border on the scandalous. Then Willoughby abandons her; meanwhile, Elinor's growing affection for Edward suffers a check when he admits he is secretly engaged to a childhood sweetheart. How each of the sisters reacts to their romantic misfortunes, and the lessons they draw before coming finally to the requisite happy ending forms the heart of the novel. Though Marianne's disregard for social conventions and willingness to consider the world well-lost for love may appeal to modern readers, it is Elinor whom Austen herself most evidently admired; a truly happy marriage, she shows us, exists only where sense and sensibility meet and mix in proper measure. --Alix Wilber
Reviews
Sense & Sensibility tells the story of the Dashwood sisters: Elinor-the level headed elder sister and Marianne the impulsive, emotional sister. When the girls' father dies unexpectedly, they and their mother are obliged to move out of their house now occupied by their half brother John and his self centered wife Fanny. They are offered a cottage at Barton by a distant relative which while cozy, suits the Dashwood women well.

Elinor wonders if she saw more into the attachment she formed with Fanny's brother Edward before they departed their old home. Marianne meets the dashing Willoughby and soon falls in love with him but suffers great heartache when he abandons her unexpectedly. The Dashwood sisters spend the next three months at numerous social engagements. Elinor discovers that Edward had a courtship with another woman while Marianne finds that Willoughby was not who she thought. She is so distraught at the turn of events that she rebuffs the affections of the kind Colonel Brandon.

Growing tired of the social scene in London , Elinor and Marianne agree to leave for Cleveland , the estate of one of their acquaintances. On the way Marianne falls gravely ill. Colonel Brandon confesses his true feeling for her but it remains to be seen if the girls will find a true happy ending or not.

Jane Austen can always be relied on for a good romance story with subtle nuances. I really enjoyed the characters of Elinor and Marianne as their personalities reminded me a lot of me and my older sister. The cast of characters are what you would expect for the time period and for a Jane Austen novel-the deserving girls who fall on multiple misfortunes in their lives, the snooty society people who refuse to accept them, the silly society girls, the handsome gentleman who is secretly a rogue and the dashing gentleman (or men) who come in at the end to sweep the much loved heroines off their feet.

I find the whole courtship rituals of this time period fascinating. This book also provided a few twists to keep it interesting. Even minor misunderstandings (such as Mrs. Jennings, the older woman the girls are travelling with mistaking some good news delivered to Elinor by Colonel Brandon as a marriage proposal) are well played. I don't think this one was quite as good as Pride and Prejudice as that book and its irreplaceable Mr. Darcy will always hold a special place in my heart and on my bookshelf but I really enjoyed this one.
Reviews
"Sense and Sensibility" is a book about two girls who are looking for someone to love. I believe that this can relate to a lot of girls in today's culture. All of the girls in today's culture are always looking for love. They are always seeking for a boyfriend. This book is about two older women who are searching for the love of someone. This book can also relate to the lives of people today because it is about broken hearts and finding the right person. A lot of people today think that the first boy that they date, they are going to marry. That is not true in a lot of cases and that is a lesson that can be learned from this book.

This book is about two sisters. Marianne and Elinor are both looking for someone to marry. They are at the age when it is time for them to be married and that is what they want. In the beginning of the book, Elinor has fallen for a man named Edward Ferrars. He is a respectable gentlemen who Elinor falls on love with at first site. When Elinor and her family move away, he promises to come and see them soon. He never comes and only sends a letter. This makes Elinor very upset. While all of this is happening, Marianne meets a man. His name is John Willoughby. He is also very respectable and helps Marianne when she falls down. He carries her home because she cannot walk. This is when it happens. When John meets her family, they instantly like him. He hangs around and is then called out of town. Then, before they know it, Willoughby is called out of town.

When the two sisters go into town for a few months, they hear some devastating news. They hear that Willoughby is marrying another woman and so is Edward. This devastates both of the girls and they are in a wreck. In the end, They both ended up getting married. You will have to read the book to see how the end turns out because I don't want to give away the ending for those of you who have not read it yet.

In the end, The book was good and I would recommend it to some people. I would not recommend it to all people because as I would put it: "The book is a chick flick". I would recommend this book to people who like romance and fiction. This book I think would best fit teenage girls. This is what I feel about the book.
Reviews
The Kindle edition was well-formatted with only two recurring issues: (1) every 4-5 pages or so, some sentences or phrases were repeated on separate lines near (but not perfectly next to) where they first appeared or were about to appear, but they were easy to spot and ignore; and (2) bracketed numbers appeared occasionally within the text, but it was unclear what they referred to. Content includes table of contents with chapter titles and a somewhat antiquated preface (not by Austen, of course) from the out-of-copyright text.

With respect to the content itself, Austen's story and story-telling is amusing and witty, her language is ornate and sometimes a bit tedious, and most (though not all) of the characters are sketched vividly. This was the first Austen book I've read (and the first she published), but I rather doubt it would have remained so popular without the success of her other books; I would recommend Pride and Prejudice or another of her books as a first read. Nevertheless, though I'm primarily a non-fiction reader and a reader of science fiction and adventure otherwise, I found the book to be enjoyable and very satisfying.
Reviews
I've read only Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen before, and I am a huge lover of that novel. As such I've been somewhat (stupidly) hesitant to read other Austen novels - for surely nothing could live up to that book!

I finally have read Sense and Sensibility and I am sorry that I did not read it earlier. I must say that S&S was a very easy and accessible book to read. The plot wasn't overly complex and it did not feel bogged down and dense like some old classic novels can. I think this would be a great book for someone who wants to read classics but who is worried or scared to.

The two main characters are easy to love and I was wondering what would happen the whole way through. Without saying anything specific, Austen kept me on my toes and I was very satisfied with the ending.

Now I'm off to read more of Austen's books!
Reviews
My favorite Austen because I can identify with Elinor Dashwood. I also have a younger sister that often makes me say, "WTF? Think a little before you act!" But I love her anyway.

Cancer Epidemiology: Principles and Methods

Cancer Epidemiology: Principles and Methods
I. dos santos Silva | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | World Health Organization | 452 | Internal Medicine
A basic textbook addressed to medical and public health students, clinicians, health professionals, and all others seeking to understand the principles and methods used in cancer epidemiology. Written by a prominent epidemiologist and experienced teacher at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, the text aims to help readers become competent in the use of basic epidemiological tools and capable of exercising critical judgment when assessing results reported by others. Throughout the text, a lively writing style and numerous illustrative examples, often using real research data, facilitate an easy understanding of basic concepts and methods. Information ranges from an entertaining account of the origins of epidemiology, through advice on how to overcome some of the limitations of survival analysis, to a checklist of questions to ask when considering sources of bias. Although statistical concepts and formulae are presented, the emphasis is consistently on the interpretation of the data rather than on the actual calculations. The text has 18 chapters. The first six introduce the basic principles of epidemiology and statistics. Chapters 7-13 deal in more depth with each of the study designs and interpretation of their findings. Two chapters, concerned with the problems of confounding and study size, cover more complex statistical concepts and are included for advanced study. A chapter on methodological issues in cancer prevention gives examples of epidemiology's contribution to primary prevention, screening and other activities for early detection, and tertiary prevention. The concluding chapters review the role of cancer registries and discuss practical considerations that should be taken into account in the design, planning, and conduct of any type of epidemiological research.

Sex Differences in Lateralization in the Animal Brain (Conceptual Advances in Brain Research)

Sex Differences in Lateralization in the Animal Brain (Conceptual Advances in Brain Research)
V L Bianki,E. B. Filippova | 2001-01-16 00:00:00 | CRC Press | 224 | Mental Health
Until recently, little account has been taken of sex differences in many research studies in psychiatry, medicine and physiology. Subjects of these research studies were mainly men, with most researchers using twice as many males as females in their studies. The need to take a sexually differentiated approach has led to the work described in this book, concerning detailed investigations into the correlations between functional asymmetry of the brain and sex.
Sex Differences in Lateralization in the Animal Brain is the first monograph summarizing the sexual specificity of functional lateralization of the brain in animals and humans. It is based on original experimental data from animals and will be of interest to biologists, psychologists and neurobiologists.

Introduction to Electron Microscopy for Biologists, Volume 88: Methods in Cell Biology

Introduction to Electron Microscopy for Biologists, Volume 88: Methods in Cell Biology
Terry D. Allen Ph.D. D.Sc. | 2008-07-01 00:00:00 | Academic Press; 1 edition | 560 | Technics
Introduction to Electron Microscopy for Biologists is ideal for the scientist who may be considering electron microscopy as a tool to extend molecular, biochemical, or light microscope observations to the next level of structural information, only available by electron microscopy. Each chapter briefly surveys the present state of structural information in a particular area, be it an individual but widely occurring molecule such as actin or collagen, together with the methods for visualization, either as an extracted and purified entity, or in situ within its biological context. Not only is this book an introduction to electron microscopy in general, but it is also useful for those within the field who wish to move to a different area of expertise, for instance an approach based on rapid freezing, rather than more conventional protocols. This should be a first choice reference for any biologist wanting to know what does it look like across the full spectrum of cell and molecular biology of life science.

*Illustrates the advantages of electron microscopy and the protocols required for fine structural visualization of individual molecules upwards, ranging from mammalian tissues to experimental organisms.
*Comprehensive chapters cover both structural information on each area as well as the protocols themselves
*Includes methods covering specific labeling, as well as methods for quantification and three dimensional reconstruction from molecular to tissue levels.

Outstanding a Real Peach for Excel users!
This is an outstanding book, it's an easy study format, some repetition but far from the novel format found in other books and it touches' on all the core principles required for good spreadsheet design.

I was hoping that walkenbach would resolve some of the worse convoluted excel specific issues like pivot tables and copy paste bugs but some things are simply never going to be fixed.

The books provides a real core foundation to formulas, structure, and logic required by anyone who is a novice and/or professional, the information is laid out very well and the structure makes referring to this book a joy.

It is in my opinion the BEST Excel 2003 book I have ever had; it also covers some old structures that Excel brought over from Lotus!

I own two copies!, I know the first one is getting ragged already from use so I am prepared, if I sale snatch it up!, its good reads,,.

Stuff I Never Knew
I've been using Excel to create charts for 20 years and thought I knew a lot about creating and modifying charts. I'm only on Chapter 4 and I've already learned a handful of very helpful hints and tips -- and this is just the chapters that cover the basics. I was planning to skip those chapters because I thought they wouldn't cover anything new. Instead I'm glad I didn't as there are a number of shortcuts I would have never known about. There are great examples and the CD lets you try out the options as they are discussed in the book.

User review
Lack of explanation and missing chapters on CD
1. There isn't rational division of subjects,

the author do not separate the fields of knowledge as

between scientific, commercial, and so on.

2. There isn't step by step method to build the charts

3. There isn't chapters 11,13 and 14 in the CD that comes with the book.

Lack of organization, lack of methodology, and missing parts.

Living Systems: Innovative Materials and Technologies for Landscape Architecture

Living Systems: Innovative Materials and Technologies for Landscape Architecture
Liat Margolis, Alexander Robinson | 2007-01-01 00:00:00 | Birkhauser Basel | 191 | Architecture
Innovation in material technologies has been at the forefront of design discourse over the last decade. This emergence is the culmination of a widespread professional and academic recognition that knowledge of material properties and processes is fundamental to innovation in design applications, and further, that crossfertilization among professional fields, as well as access to data outside of conventional territories, may broaden and advance the scope of landscape architecture. As a result of this material culture, conceptual and practical approaches to design development and dialogue have shifted toward a research-driven design process in which the opportunities and constraints of materials and construction techniques become integral to design intent.
...
Living Systems calls for a shift away from the traditional design process that initially identifies a landscape’s behaviors and performance criteria, and then offers a range of product/construction solutions that can accommodate such functions, toward a design process which integrates the function into the design from the outset. While we do not propose to discard conventional categorization systems or material specification guidelines, we promote an expansion of terminology to acknowledge the dynamic performance of the medium, and comply with highperformance rating systems (i.e. LEED; Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), which establish high standards for environmental, economic and social improvements.

Atlas Of The Civil War

Atlas Of The Civil War
James M. McPherson | 2005-03-16 00:00:00 | Running Press | 224 | Civil War
Here is the definitive reference to the battles of the Civil War, written by America's leading military historians and edited by the Pulitzer Prize-winning Civil War expert James M. McPherson. This authoritative volume includes gripping eyewitness accounts plus 200 specially commissioned, full-color maps that detail all of the major campaigns and many of the smaller skirmishes of the war between the states. Maps provide a superb visual reference to troop movement, battlefield terrain, and communication lines. Dynamic reconstructions depict battles fought on land, river, and ocean, and time-line descriptions provide play-by-play commentary of the action. With more than 200 photographs and many personal accounts that vividly recount the experiences of soldiers in the fields, this book brings to life the human drama that pitted the north against the south.
Reviews
This atlas is just awful. Previous reviews have inidacted how badly the maps are displayed and how they are frequently placed across the binding-- obscuring the center within the fold of the spine. Additionally the maps frequently drop comments in the middle of sentences and fail to display items for which labels are present. (Examples include the maps of Gettysburg. Here "Emmitsburg Road" -the label, floats south of the Peach Orchard, while the road itself apparently ends in front of the intersection of Taneytown Road. Another map of Gettysburg is captioned to read "18 7pm Hancock leaves for Taneytown to summon " (sic) To summon Meade to be sure, but his name is carelessly omitted.

Worst of all the commentary on Steele's campaign in spring of 1864 includes "Due to intense racial animosity, the Confederates killed a large number of African American soldiers as they attempted to surrender." An unknowing reader might think that this comment referenced white v black hatred, yet Foote tells us in the Civil War vol. 3 that these soldiers of 1st Kansas (Colored) Inf were murdered by a Choctaw regiment in service to the Confederates possibly in retaliation for atrocities by Kansas troops (white and black) against the Choctaw settlements in the west where this regiment was raised. Given the low quality of the work itself this is probably a careless error by editors rather than a political ploy. Scant mention is made of Native Americans' service to the Confederate states or to the Union states throughout the book.
Reviews
Great book and a good companion to the " Battle Cry of Freedom " by James McPherson to give a better understanding of this time period and the events that took place and why.
Reviews
I found the layout of a lot of the maps quite annoying because they are placed across the spine of the book, making them hard, if not impossible, to read. Reconstructing the various situations and commanders' decisions described in the text is often impossible because all the information is crammed into a single map. It is a pity the maps are not as accessible as they are colorful because otherwise the combination of easy-to-read texts, tons of pictures and colorful maps make the atlas a good addition to any civil war literature.
Reviews
With this book you will be able to find information and a very colorful map of almost anyy battle in the Civil War. This is must for teenagers doing a term paper on a specific battle, since I am one myself.
Reviews
I bought this book as a companion to reading several of Bruce Catton's histories of the war. Since Catton doesnt go through the war sequentially, and since the atlas doesnt entirely, either, it was tough initially but was helpful once i got the hang of it. But then i realized the material was not entirely accurate, more a result of poor editing than bad information. Several inset maps are shown with incorrect north arrows that lead to disorientation. At other places there are parenthetical references to an inset being "below left" when it is actually "above right." These types of errors undermine the usefulness of a reference book significantly. I considered a large number of atlases -- some specific to the war as well as others -- and this seemed to be the best. perhaps there is a potential market for a civil war era regular atlas so someone reading a history book can follow things better, without the step by step military strategy this atlas has.

Charm City: A Tess Monaghan Novel

Charm City: A Tess Monaghan Novel
Laura Lippman | 2007-01-01 00:00:00 | William Morrow | 320 | Fiction Other
Laura Lippman never lets me down. She really doesn't. I just finished HP6 and I was a little burned-out (something about reading 651 pages in two days that burns a person out). I needed something to just enjoy and not have to be reading every single word and analyzing what was going to happen next. Laura was just what I needed. Tess was just what I needed.

As 2nd books go, this one was very good. It was a little uneven in that it gets really heavy and intense later but is in odd contrast to the beginning, which isn't so intense. The addition of Esskay and Tess' emerging feelings for the dog are great. More of Crow, which is something that is also great. These are fantastic characters that one can't help but wanting to fall back in with them and enjoy your time among them.

I'm going to read the third book. I feel like I'm on a Laura Lippman kick. Not a bad to place to be, let me tell you.

The New Negotiating Edge: The Behavioral Approach for Results and Relationships (People Skills for Professional Series)
Gavin Kennedy | 1998-10-27 00:00:00 | Nicholas Brealey Publishing | 288 | Motivational
From the bestselling author on negotiation, The New Negotiating Edge is not about what people ought to do, rationally or otherwise. It is about how people really behave and what you can do about it.
Reviews
"The new negotiating egdge", a title that was for me a promise for new ideas, new concept, new material and... just a rehash of what's has been said already (with other words). Disappointing !

Nuclear Forensic Analysis

Nuclear Forensic Analysis
Kenton J. Moody,Ian D. Hutcheon,Patrick M. Grant | 2005-02-28 00:00:00 | CRC Press | 512 | Law
This book provides a primary reference source for nuclear forensic science, including the vastly disciplinary nature of the overall endeavor for questioned weapons of mass destruction specimens. Nothing like this exists even in the classified material. For the first time, the fundamental principles of radioforensic analysis, all pertinent protocols and procedures, computer modeling development, interpretational insights, and attribution considerations are consolidated into one convenient source. The principles and techniques so developed are then demonstrated and discussed in their applications to real-world investigations and casework conducted over the past several years.
Reviews
Don't be seriously influenced by unworthy braking radiation. The following is excerpted from a formal review published in The Journal of Forensic Sciences by Chemistry Professor W.F. Kinard of the College of Charleston [JFS 51(1): 203 (2006)]:

"This book by three of the leading authorities in the field outlines a critically important area of forensic science in the modern world. While many of the government laboratories have carried out extensive work in the past on the detection and attribution of radioactive materials, the work was primarily engaged with national security at the nation states' level, and not with individuals or small groups. The authors provide a comprehensive outline of the field with practical information presented in 25 chapters. This is not a book filled with theory, but critical information has been gathered and put in one place for readers wanting to know more about the forensic applications of nuclear science."

"This book should be in the library of every forensic laboratory. While most laboratories may never encounter nuclear materials, this book contains valuable information about the nature of these materials. Forensic scientists should pay special attention to the chapters outlining how to detect radioactive materials and to preserve the samples for nuclear and traditional forensic analysis. The book makes it very clear that the sophisticated analyses and interpretation of these samples require highly sophisticated instrumentation and nuclear chemistry expertise that may only be available in national laboratories. However, first responders will have the responsibility of detecting and preserving radioactive samples for nuclear forensic analysis, and this book provides valuable information to help in this task."

Reviews
I admit I had higher expectations for this book.

Based on the title, I was assuming that it would be geared towards people who already had an advanced knowledge of radiation detection techniques and radiochemistry. I found this book to be geared towards a market that likely encompasses analytical chemists, but not radiation experts.

It is (predictably, I suppose) lacking the details that anyone in the radiation science field would actually require to perform a proper RDD NFA, and is shy on its treatment of what I would classify as the most important RDD isotopes (the Devil is in the details). Instead, this text draws upon Cold War Google-able information.

I recommend this book for analytical chemists that would like a cursory examination of nuclear forensic analysis, or experts that would like a brightly colored mushroom cloud textbook cover on their shelf.

For the rest of us, I would recommend sticking with Cember, Friedlander and Knoll......and of course the Chart of the Nuclides.
