Highly recommended

A friend recommended this book two days before I was scheduled to take the exam. The Exam Cram 2 book I'd been using was terrible, and I needed an intelligible, technical and reliable reference to augment my study. Sybex delivered.

I found the book to be concise, well written and technically accurate. It covered in depth matters of physical and operational security that I hadn't seen elsewhere and were very much on the exam itself. Also, the test exams on the included CD had more questions and were of better quality than those from PrepLogic.

All in all, a very decent book.

Solid eSecurity Knowledge Providing book !
Thank you in advance for reading my review: I hope it would be helpful for your decision either to buy this book or look for another.

There is no doubt there are many different readers with many different expectations. However, if you expect from the book:

1. Very good coverage of current eSecurity topics,

2. Full Compatibility with Comptia's Security+ objectives,

3. Lots of questions (more than 400) with easy recalling tools (flash cards and nice glossary)

4. Easy to read and easy to understand explanations.

THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU. It is ideal for people who would like to learn first, then pass the exam. However, if your main focus is to pass the ASAP with minimum effort, save your money and time: try other book.

Well,,. you may wonder why 4 stars instead of 5. Simply: the questions seems easy - actually quite easy!! You might mistakenly believe: all of a sudden you became a eSecurity guru after reading just a book and know everyhing about the subject. - believe me this is not possible: as professional working on this field since 1997, I still have occasional nightmares a 15 year old geek challenge my sytem with some tools I never heard about :) - If you dont want to meet with the sad truth at the real exam: use other resources as well to be prepared: some of the alternatives are Boson software, Prelogic and Transcender.

Also, before taking the exam visit cramsession web site and read the comments of different people to learn what real people think about the exam and questions.

I wish you every success for the exam,,.

regards

Part of what you need.
Sybex used in combination with Exam Cram and Preplogic practice tests from the preplogic website did the trick. By itself, the book was a little short on some topics, but it covered items that the other two I previously mentioned did not.

Great informaitonal resource
This is a must have for anyone getting their Security+ certification. The information is organized so that it flows. You won't get caught by surprise when taking the Security+ exams after reading this book.

Amazon.com
With The Da Vinci Code, Dan Brown masterfully concocts an intelligent and lucid thriller that marries the gusto of an international murder mystery with a collection of fascinating esoteria culled from 2,000 years of Western history.
A murder in the silent after-hour halls of the Louvre museum reveals a sinister plot to uncover a secret that has been protected by a clandestine society since the days of Christ. The victim is a high-ranking agent of this ancient society who, in the moments before his death, manages to leave gruesome clues at the scene that only his granddaughter, noted cryptographer Sophie Neveu, and Robert Langdon, a famed symbologist, can untangle. The duo become both suspects and detectives searching for not only Neveu's grandfather's murderer but also the stunning secret of the ages he was charged to protect. Mere steps ahead of the authorities and the deadly competition, the mystery leads Neveu and Langdon on a breathless flight through France, England, and history itself. Brown (Angels and Demons) has created a page-turning thriller that also provides an amazing interpretation of Western history. Brown's hero and heroine embark on a lofty and intriguing exploration of some of Western culture's greatest mysteries--from the nature of the Mona Lisa's smile to the secret of the Holy Grail. Though some will quibble with the veracity of Brown's conjectures, therein lies the fun. The Da Vinci Code is an enthralling read that provides rich food for thought. --Jeremy Pugh

From Publishers Weekly
Brown's latest thriller (after Angels and Demons)is an exhaustively researched page-turner about secret religious societies, ancient coverups and savage vengeance. The action kicks off in modern-day Paris with the murder of the Louvre's chief curator, whose body is found laid out in symbolic repose at the foot of the Mona Lisa. Seizing control of the case are Sophie Neveu, a lovely French police cryptologist, and Harvard symbol expert Robert Langdon, reprising his role from Brown's last book. The two find several puzzling codes at the murder scene, all of which form a treasure map to the fabled Holy Grail. As their search moves from France to England, Neveu and Langdon are confounded by two mysterious groups-the legendary Priory of Sion, a nearly 1,000-year-old secret society whose members have included Botticelli and Isaac Newton, and the conservative Catholic organization Opus Dei. Both have their own reasons for wanting to ensure that the Grail isn't found. Brown sometimes ladles out too much religious history at the expense of pacing, and Langdon is a hero in desperate need of more chutzpah. Still, Brown has assembled a whopper of a plot that will please both conspiracy buffs and thriller addicts.

User review
Best Aperture book so far
Orlando Luna's Aperture 1.5 book is terrific. It's well organized and the practical info is exactly what you need to know to get unstuck in Aperture, which is not particularly intuitive software to a new user. I've looked at every Aperture book published so far, and this is one of a select few that are worth your time.

User review
Excellent way to learn Aperture
Macs and their software are incredibly user-friendly, but even the easiest application needs a set of well-planned lessons that show how to best use its features. Aperture is more complex than most, and benefits from this training series, which really does show you step-by-step procedures that will help you quickly get up to speed.

User review
Easily understandable and complete!
For those who are serious about organizing their didgital photos, this book is a `must have` to accopmpany their purchase of Aperture 1.5 software.

The software covers all of the frustrations that we have felt in trying to organize our images in a safe and usefull manner.

I was concerned that I wouldn't be able to keep up with some of the instructions, but everything is so very clear; it was refreshingly understandable!

User review
It's OK
I can't say whether or not this book will adequately prepare you for the Aperture certification exam as I'm having a great deal of trouble finding anyone who actually offers it in my area, but I can say that if you own Aperture you own a copy of the Aperture user's manual, and you're not going to find a lot of information in this book that isn't already in there. I was honestly going to return it, but then I carelessly set a glass of water down on top of it while I was on the phone and crinkled up the cover.

User review
Excellent tutorials and very easy to get through
I have had mixed luck with tutorial books and self paced learning, but this is an excellent example of how to do it correctly. Not too much and not too little. I immediately was able to get 10 X as much out of my Aperture investment after just the first few chapters. I've dramatically improved my ability to deal with the hundreds of pictures I take every shoot. It really should be the manual for the program. Don't think twice. This is the book to get if you want to get more out of Aperture.

Windows Forms Programming in C#

Windows Forms Programming in C#
| 1969-12-31 00:00:00 | | 0 | C#

Everything changes in the Microsoft .NET Framework and the C# language, including the creation of graphical user interfaces (GUIs). Windows Forms Programming in C# explains the Windows Forms (WinForms) environment to programmers who have some experience with .NET programming, and in the process (thanks to a clear and deliberate expository style) reveals a lot about .NET to less experienced developers. The overall effect is that almost every reader comes away with better knowledge of .NET, not just its user-interface libraries and behaviors.

Author Chris Sells takes care to balance code samples with explanatory text, meaning that most chapters take on a characteristic `code, explanation, effect` style (in which `effect` is usually documented with a screen shot). This approach is effective, and serves both to answer `How do I,,.` questions and inspire `I should give that a try!` exploration. Once in a while, callouts will link two or more screen shots with a sample of code, graphically illustrating how code affects the appearance of a form and how it's represented in the Visual Studio development environment. On top of his clear teaching style, Sells calls attention to workarounds for shortcomings in the .NET environment (particularly where similar limitations don't exist in Microsoft Foundation Classes), helping to improve programmer productivity in the growing .NET environment. --David Wall

Topics covered: How to use the WinForms environment within the Microsoft .NET Framework. Dialog boxes, drawing, printing, and controls all are covered by means of explanations and lots of illustrative examples, and there's good coverage of the WinForms event model, too. An appendix compares MFC and the .NET Framework.

User review
This book is out of date
No where in the title, cover or product description does it explain that this covers a very old version of Windows Forms programming that is no longer relevant today. I had not looked for the publication date when choosing this book (silly me). The author put the manuscript to bed in April 2003 and the book was published in September of 2003.

If you are completely new to Windows Forms, realize that this book was written to about Visual Studio 2003 .NET standards. Huge changes have been made to Visual Studio and .NET since then (major revision being Visual Studio 2005 and 2008).

When you read the assorted reviews here on Amazon, you'll note that most reviews are dated around 2004 or so.

This book should be fully updated to a new edition or taken off the market. Being six years old, and with .NET and Visual Studio both having undergone several revisions since then, this book has limited relevancy in 2009. I regret that I purchased this book.

User review
Contains essentials
Contains all the essential information and a little bit more but not much more. Over all a pretty good starter book.

User review
Wasn't helpful for me - nothing about design and weak coverage of components.
I'm a Java programmer who finished reading O'Reilly's `Programming C#` (very good book), and wanted to get started in Windows Forms programming. Chapters 1 and 2 were decent and Appendix B was an excellent introduction to Delegates and Events.

The rest of the book, however, was very weak. All it did was give a brief summary of some of the windows forms components (and the coverage was very weak). If you want to learn about a component you are going to have to look it up it on MSDN.

I was hoping the book would give me something other than what I can get by looking at an API. I was really hoping there would at least be a few chapters on how to design Windows Forms applications - there was nothing. The easy part is learning how to use a component. The difficult part is learning best practices about design an application - something this book didn't touch.

Also, I'm not sure how the rest of the books in the `Microsoft .NET Development Series` are, but I think it's very cheap and dishonest to make a book 'appear' weighty. The book is 680 pages, but the margins, line spacing, and text are all very large. This book easily could have been half its size.

User review
The second edition is out the covers Windows forms V2, you may want to buy it instead.

The second edition is out that covers Windows forms V2, you may want to buy it instead.

User review
Very readable coverage of very relevant material
I got this book after having already done quite a bit of WinForms programming and found it a compelling read. I'd have read after a platform/language primer but before doing any actual WinForms work, had I had it in my possession at that time.

Its the first programming book in some time that I read as a 'page turner' - it's that well-written (in prose terms).

It's also very well copy-edited, which shows that a lot of effort went into getting the book just right, which can't be said for all books (I guess the gap between release of .NET 1.0&1.1 and this book allowed for that more than in other books).

As for the relevance of the information, I believe it to be very relevant to a wide variety of application types, regardless of that being the main criticism I see in other reviews here. I guess that comes from the fact that you can't please all the people all the time. Still, I'd venture it comes as close as any other book is going to come.

For me it's very near the top of the must-have books if you're going to be writing non-trivial production WinForms apps.

One thing to be aware of is that the .NET 2.0 version is on the way in the coming months, making it Essential unless you're not in a position to use 2.0 stuff.

A must have reference guide for the beginner to the most advanced. This book covers it all!!Step by step instructions take you through each task on the imac in simple to understand terms. Each chapter begins and ends with summary sections to tell you what is upcoming and remind you of what you read about. Great Book!!!
Reviews
I ordered this book expecting pictures, charts, and simple lists of the things I need to do to make things work on the run. Instead, I'm finding as much prose as in the "Dummies" series, but the style is so flat, static, and detached that it's less engaging and helpful than the "Dummies" book by David Pogue or "My Imac" by Gore et. al. A computer like the Imac deserves a style as zesty, colorful, inviting as its subject. This may be my newest book on the Imac, but it's my last choice of texts.

Band Theory of Solids: An Introduction from the Point of View of Symmetry (Oxford Science Publications)

Band Theory of Solids: An Introduction from the Point of View of Symmetry (Oxford Science Publications)
Simon L. Altmann | 1991-09-26 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press, USA | 304 | Australia
The structure of much of solid-state theory comes directly from group theory, but until now there has been no elementary introduction to the band theory of solids using this approach. Employing the most basic of group theoretical ideas, and emphasizing the significance of symmetry in determining many of the essential concepts, this is the only book to provide such an introduction. Many topics were chosen with the needs of chemists in mind, and numerous problems are included to enable the reader to apply the major ideas and to complete some parts of the treatment. Physical scientists will also find this a valuable introduction to the field.

Fatigue Crack Growth Thresholds, Endurance Limits, and Design (Astm Special Technical Publication// Stp)

Fatigue Crack Growth Thresholds, Endurance Limits, and Design (Astm Special Technical Publication// Stp)
et al Astm Committee E-8 on Fatigue and Fracture (Corporate Author) | 2000-02-01 00:00:00 | ASTM International | 452 | Engineering
Leading experts provide 24 papers addressing four areas pertinent to fatigue crack growth thresholds: mechanisms, test procedures, analysis, and applications. Mechanisms: Three mechanisms that influence thresholds are discussed including: crack-tip closure, environment, and Kmax effects. A simplistic four-parameter model that describes FCG threshold behavior of elastic-plastic materials is also presented. Test Procedures: Eight papers focus on loading and specimen-type effects with research showing that the resistance-curve (R-curve) method to determine the threshold for fatigue-crack growth should allow more reliable application of ?Kth values to engineering problems. Analysis: Three papers analyze the behavior of fatigue cracks in the threshold regime using several different analysis methods. These methods were the elastic-plastic finite-element method (FEM), the Dugdale-type mode, the BCS (Bilby, Cottrell and Swinden) model, and a discrete-dislocation model. Applications: Nine papers address applications of threshold concepts and endurance limits to aerospace and structural materials. The impact of a number of testing variables on the measurement of fatigue-crack-growth thresholds, in particular ASTM E 647, Test Method for Measurement of Fatigue Crack Growth Rates is also discussed.

Statistics and Data Analysis in Geology

Statistics and Data Analysis in Geology
John C. Davis | 2002-05-08 00:00:00 | Wiley | 656 | Geology
Thoroughly revised and updated, this new edition of the text that helped define the field continues to present important methods in the quantitative analysis of geologic data, while showing students how statistics and computing can be applied to commonly encountered problems in the earth sciences.

In addition to new and expanded coverage of key topics, the Third Edition features new pedagogy, end-of-chapter review exercises, and an accompanying website that contains all of the data for every example and exercise found in the book.
Reviews
This is a needed update to an excellent work. It covers the applications of math and statistics to geology, but as a physical anthropologist, I have found it most useful as well. The second edition corrected some major errors in the first edition and this edition cleans up pretty much anything not fixed in the second edition. The new material is welcome.

I have only two real complaints. First, when discussing the characterizing/describing/measuring of shape using Fourier and related techniques, there is no mention of Elliptical Fourier Functions, which have been widely used for some 20 years (see for example . Kuhl FP, Giardina CR.(1982) Elliptic Fourier features of a closed contour. Comput Graph Imag Proc 18: 236-258 and Lestrel PE. (1997) Fourier Descriptors and their applications in Biology. Cambridge University Press, New York.

Second, while rather new, the use of wavelets to measure localized shape features is not mentioned either. They are being used to describe, e.g. fingerprints (as found in the FBI fingerprint database) and for facial recognition. I am not sure of applications in geology, but they certainly must exist. Some of the usages in physical anthropology are sufficiently close to the kinds of questions geologists often ask, that there is certainly a need for some discussion in this book. For examples and much more see: Costa LF, Cesar Jr RM. (2001) Shape Analysis and Classification: Theory and Practice. CRC Press, Boca Raton, Fl.

I'd be satisfied if Dr. Davis would add a chapter or two on these to the book's web site.

Just to make it clear: I have no financial interest in either of the books noted above.

Reviews
This textbook is a pleasant surprise. It is an excellent introduction to multivariate analysis, much better than I have encountered elsewhere. As the title indicates, the examples are geological such as analysis of spatial distribution of geological features, geochemical analysis, sediment transportation problems, paleontological sampling issues, stratigraphic sequence comparisons, fluvial pattern analysis, etc.

Davis provides a chapter on matrix algebra, emphasizing the mathematical operations that underlie trend surface analysis, principal components, and discriminant functions. I found his geometric approach to eigenvalues and eigenvectors to be more intuitive than traditional algebraic approaches found in most linear algebra texts. I also like the discussion on determinants. I suspect that a reader unfamiliar with matrices and linear algebra might find this introduction to be too concise and a bit overwhelming. But as a review, the chapter was really quite good.

More than 350 pages are devoted to the final three chapters - Analysis of Sequence Maps, Map Analysis, and Analysis of Multivariate Data. These three chapters provide an exceptional discussion of advanced statistical techniques. The mathematics are well explained and the techniques are described in detail, including pitfalls in the mis-application of the various statistical methods.

My copy (14th printing, first edition) includes a section on Fortran IV programming and scatters some Fortran examples across various chapters. While this feature somewhat dates the text, it is at most a distraction and can easily be skipped without any loss of understanding of the statistical methods. The Fortran sections may not have been retained in the second edition (1986). This newer edition apparently provides updated coverage on probability, non-parametric statistics, and Fourier analysis and adds coverage of kriging methods.

In recent years more books on geostatistics have appeared and some are quite good. However, I have noted that the Davis text is invariably included on a short reading list for graduate geostatistics courses. My only concern is that this text has become increasingly difficult to locate. I give it five stars.

Mathematical Methods in Quantum Mechanics: With Applications to Schrodinger Operations

Mathematical Methods in Quantum Mechanics: With Applications to Schrodinger Operations
Gerald Teschi | 2009-01-01 00:00:00 | American Mathematical Society | 302 | Mathematics
Quantum mechanics and the theory of operators on Hilbert space have been deeply linked since their beginnings in the early twentieth century. States of a quantum system correspond to certain elements of the configuration space and observables correspond to certain operators on the space. This book is a brief, but self-contained, introduction to the mathematical methods of quantum mechanics, with a view towards applications to Schrodinger operators. Part 1 of the book is a concise introduction to the spectral theory of unbounded operators. Only those topics that will be needed for later applications are covered. The spectral theorem is a central topic in this approach and is introduced at an early stage. Part 2 starts with the free Schrodinger equation and computes the free resolvent and time evolution. Position, momentum, and angular momentum are discussed via algebraic methods. Various mathematical methods are developed, which are then used to compute the spectrum of the hydrogen atom. Further topics include the nondegeneracy of the ground state, spectra of atoms, and scattering theory. This book serves as a self-contained introduction to spectral theory of unbounded operators in Hilbert space with full proofs and minimal prerequisites: Only a solid knowledge of advanced calculus and a one-semester introduction to complex analysis are required. In particular, no functional analysis and no Lebesgue integration theory are assumed. It develops the mathematical tools necessary to prove some key results in nonrelativistic quantum mechanics. "Mathematical Methods in Quantum Mechanics" is intended for beginning graduate students in both mathematics and physics and provides a solid foundation for reading more advanced books and current research literature. It is well suited for self-study and includes numerous exercises (many with hints).

Like Goyathlay (Geronimo), I've always regarded Mangas Coloradas as a mentor...teacher, one who spoke the truth and never relaxed in his determined endeavor to bring salvation to the Apache People and deliver them from evil. Man of honor! Man of integrity! Great leader! Good book! So, buy it and read it!
Reviews
very enlighting, author keeps your intrest hightend ! living for 3+ years in new mexico i had heard of mangas but new hardly anything of this great apache leader, now i do!
Reviews
The review below is historically baseless with the reviewer only considers exceptionally biased sources as valid. 'Politically correct' or not, using biased sources will lead you to biased results and have NO place in serious examination, except as a side note showing prevailing attitudes behind the shameful actions taken by the US against the indigenous population.

That said, the book is so so and there are better books out there on the subject.
Reviews
Mangas COloradas led his people for many years in New Mexico and on raids in Mexico and Arizona. He was related to Cochise, who sweeney has also written a book about. This is a wonderful read, fully researched and vivdly portrays the Apache chief in all his splender, letting you feel the southwest as well as detailing the minute negotiations and military conflicts that raged about him.
Reviews
Some of us go to the bookstore and seek out the history section and browse the displayed titles. History entice us, it shows our past and tells about the mistakes repeated time and again. Maybe, for some of us it is able to tell a warning or two.

History seems to me a most dangerous field to write in. Especially when in the case of this material, the concrete facts are so small and insignificant and what may or may not be the real answers to a lot of questions are buried by time and dust. One will perhaps never know what Mangas Coloradas did in his first life-years, historian Sweeney means he has found a good answer and presents it to the reader but he doesn't claim it to be the sole answer, he says it's possible. This is the respect every historian should have to his/her audience.

Of course, it's not only Mangas' first years that are lost in obscurity. Official mexican and spanish papers tell only half the story of his people, but Sweeney is extraordinary in his ability to sow a thorough and well founded history of this remarkable and gargantuan statesman. It also seems from the book's voluminous notes that Sweeney has been everywhere to find the tinyest bits of information.

All this makes noone wonder he has written his finest piece yet on the Apachean-Mexican/American relations.

An Introduction to Epidemiology

An Introduction to Epidemiology
Thomas C. Timmreck | 1998-05-15 00:00:00 | Gareth Stevens Publishing | 508 | Public Health
This new edition is intended for introductory courses in health-related programs at both the advanced undergraduate and graduate levels. It will also serve as a valuable reference for epidemiologists working in the field, industrial hygienists, infectious disease nurses and staff epidemiologists. A clear, organized presentation makes this thorough treatment of epidemiology more accessible to readers through the use of study questions, objectives, exercises and case studies.
Reviews
this book does a fair job of introducing someone to the world of epidemiology. The book is often difficult to understand. There will be a type of statistical method explained, yet no example on how to do it. There is no glossary. The chapter focused on the history of epidemiology is quite good.
Reviews
If you are forced to take epi, buy this book. The only thing better is to cheat off your neighbor. Lots of useful examples and practice exercises.

Seeing Black and White (Oxford Psychology Series)

Seeing Black and White (Oxford Psychology Series)
Alan Gilchrist | 2006-06-08 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press, USA | 448 | Mental Health
How the human visual system determines the lightness of a surface, that is, its whiteness, blackness, or grayness, remains--like vision in general--a mystery. In fact, we have not even been able to create a machine that can determine, through an artificial vision system, whether an object is white, black, or gray. Although the photoreceptors in the eye are driven by light, the light reflected by a surface does not reveal its shade of gray. Depending upon the level of illumination, a surface of any shade of gray can reflect any amount of light.

In Seeing Black and White Alan Gilchrist ties together over 30 years of his own research on lightness, and presents the first comprehensive, historical review of empirical work on lightness, covering the past 150 years of research on images ranging from the simple to the complex. He also describes and analyzes the many theories of lightness--including his own--showing what each can and cannot explain. Gilchrist highlights the forgotten-yet-exciting work done in the first third of the twentieth century, describing several crucial experiments and examining the brilliant but nearly unknown work of the Hungarian gestalt theorist, Lajos Kardos.

Gilchrists review also includes a survey of the pattern of lightness errors made by humans, many of which result in delightful illusions. He argues that because these errors are not random, but systematic, they are the signature of our visual software, and so provide a powerful tool that can reveal how lightness is computed. Based on this argument and the concepts of anchoring, grouping, and frames of reference, Gilchrist presents a new theoretical framework that explains an unprecedented array of lightness errors. As both the first comprehensive overview of research on lightness and the first unified presentation of Gilchrists new theoretical framework Seeing Black and White will be an invaluable resource for vision scientists, cognitive psychologists, and cognitive neuroscientists.

Jane Austen | 2000-01-01 00:00:00 | | 423 | Fiction
Jane Austen's perfect comedy of manners--one of the most popular novels of all time--features splendidly civilized sparring between the proud Mr. Darcy and the prejudiced Elizabeth Bennet as they play out their spirited courtship in a series of eighteenth-century drawing-room intrigues. "Pride and Prejudice seems as vital today as ever," writes Anna Quindlen in her introduction to this Modern Library edition. "It is a pure joy to read." Eudora Welty agrees: "The gaiety is unextinguished, the irony has kept its bite, the reasoning is still sweet, the sparkle undiminished. [It is] irresistible and as nearly flawless as any fiction could be."

Indistinguishability Operators: Modelling Fuzzy Equalities and Fuzzy Equivalence Relations

Indistinguishability Operators: Modelling Fuzzy Equalities and Fuzzy Equivalence Relations
Jordi Recasens | 2010-01-01 00:00:00 | Springer | 262 | Computer Science
Indistinguishability operators are essential tools in fuzzy logic since they fuzzify the concepts of equivalence relation and crisp equality. This book collects all the main aspects of these operators in a single volume for the first time. The stress is put on the study of their structure and the monograph starts presenting the different ways in which indistinguishability operators can be generated and represented. Special attention is paid to the Representation Theorem and the Sup-T product. Extensionality of fuzzy subsets is studied in detail and is related to their observability and to the granularity. The metric behaviour of indistinguishability operators and their connection with cluster analysis and hierarchical trees is established. Different ways to aggregate such operators are given as well as a number of methods to obtain transitive approximations of a fuzzy relation. Applications to approximate reasoning and to the study of fuzzy subgroups are also provided. The book ends with a chapter on finite-valued indistinguishability operators.

I have never bought such a good book. If you are preparing for the GRE. This is the perfect book.

    Reviews
I took the GRE 10 years ago to get into an MA program, when I needed to retake them to get into a doctoral program, I panicked! A new writing section, ah! However, this book put my anxieties at ease. It is short and to the point. I did not really need it to brush up on punctuation or grammar - but all that information is there. What I really found most helpful were all the examples of sample essays. To receive a high score on the GRE writing section, you need to structure your essays a certain way - this book shows you how to do that. Writing section topics for your specific test will be picked from a pool of topics - this book covers all the major ones with its sample essays.
    Reviews
For writing the logical and issue section, it is incomparable. I read it very fast and looked at the examples again and again. That's why it is excellent because it's fast and shows exactly how. You just have to read it and then think about the examples. It helped me so much. ETS doesn't want a dissertation, just to see our demonstration of ability and this book taught me how while keeping it very simple and compact.
    Reviews
I loved it! This was short. Very accurate. Doesnt waste a minute of my valuable time in pedantic hogwash. Actually Im busy and took the advice of other readers who said they were busy and needed a crash course in the logical section for writing. THis works. It just took a quick read and then I was able to refer to it as a reminder.

I got an excellent score on the writing parts.
    Reviews
My friend took the GRE and got this a while back. He said (and it's why I listened), if I needed to learn specific writing approaches and would read for patterns and logic, it'd be super clear. And it was.

All I know is this- I am glad I spent the time and the money.

Practical Arduino Cool Projects for Open Source Hardware

Practical Arduino Cool Projects for Open Source Hardware
    Jonathan Oxer | 2009-01-01 00:00:00 | | 445 | Electrical Engineering
Phenomenon is an overused and overloaded term, but somehow it seems appropriate for Arduino—an endeavor that has caught the attention of an astonishingly wide range of people and provided opportunities for those who might otherwise have never picked up a soldering iron or written a single line of code. From dyed-in-the-wool hardware hackers to web page developers, robotics enthusiasts to installation artists, textile students to musicians: all can be found in the Arduino community. The versatility of the platform encompassing both hardware and software, combined with its inherent openness, has captured the imagination of tens of thousands of developers.
One of Arduino's many strengths is the sheer volume of information available in both printed form and on the web. Getting started is really pretty easy, as the core Arduino team intended. There are plenty of excellent introductory works already available both online and in print, so we didn't want to waste your time by providing yet another "blinking LED" tutorial. We figure that if you've gotten as far as picking up a 400+ page book about Arduino it's a good sign that you're ready for something a bit more substantial and wanting to learn more about the why rather than just the how.
We don't want you to be just a color-by-numbers painter, only able to assemble other peoples’ designs by dutifully plugging in wires according to a position overlay without really understanding the meaning behind it. We want you to become a true artist, able to conceptualize, design, and assemble your own creations.
We would be terribly disappointed if all our readers just reproduced our projects exactly as presented in the book, never deviating from the script. We want you to take these projects as inspiration

Physical metallurgy principles (University series in basic engineering)

Physical metallurgy principles (University series in basic engineering)
    Robert E Reed-Hill | 1972-01-01 00:00:00 | Van Nostrand | 920 | Subjects
This comprehensive, student friendly text is intended for use in an introductory course in physical metallurgy and is designed for all engineering students at the junior or senior level. The approach is largely theoretical but all aspects of physical metallurgy and behavior of metals and alloys are covered. The treatment used in this textbook is in harmony with a more fundamental approach to engineering education. An extensive revision has been done to insure that the content remains the standard for metallurgy engineering courses worldwide.
    Reviews
Arrived right on time in perfect condition. That's pretty much all im looking for from these people.
    Reviews
This is in reference to the hard-cover 3rd edition.

The book is good for reference, with just enough detail to be useful in every topic of materials science. You don't normally find atomic structure, microscopy, dislocation theory and fracture mechanics in one volume. It even has basic thermodynamics and diffusion. BUT because it attempts to be comprehensive, it doesn't have enough room to go into depth in all the topics.

I think this book should be titled "Introduction to Materials Science, before the nano-polymer revolution." I think it would be a better title.

I think this is how the book was written:

    1. Take a intro to materials book

    2. take out electro-opti-magnetic properties

    3. add fracture mechanics.

    4. make it thicker.

If you want to learn the subject, I think there are better books that are easier to read. But if you want to pull it off your shelf to read bits and pieces, this is pretty good.
    Reviews
I love materials science and as a bibliophile I anticipated the release this new edition for months. Surely for that price and the 15 year interim since the last edition, I expected a grand volume updated with multicolored illustrations, supplementary sidebars, interactive CD, example problems - sometime suitable for bedtime reading at my wife's side. But alas.

Well, at least the 4th Ed. has a nicer cover, and some of the typos were corrected. The content is still excellent even though the authors had the audacity to omit two chapters on fracture mechanics "to increase the focus of the text" - okay.

My advise: Buy the 3rd edition instead. You'll be getting more for less.

    Reviews
It has been three years since I had taken a material science-like course. So, I had hoped, that by opening this book, I would relearn the concepts I had forgotten.

    Focus:

An intense look at the physcial metallurgy of metals, beginning with methods, going to crystallography, phase diagrams, and focusing on specific metals (iron-carbon, steels, etc.).

    Good:

This book goes into great details. Metallography, crystallography are explained, many concepts are in great depth.

    Bad:

This is absolutely not a good book if you don't know much on the subject or are rusty (like me). A lot of time is spent on the intricacies on microscopy. Many of the concepts are presented in too much detail. I feel that instead of learning about the properties of materials and material selection that I spend most of the time learning about every detail involved in the creation of dislocations. While this is very informative, as an engineer, I need to be able to select apropos materials, not spout how an electron microscope works or the fine details in edge dislocation. Homework problems are odd. And would it hurt if the pictures could have been colored?

    Overall:

Again, good reference. Bad at teaching or reteaching you material science.
    Reviews
I believe that this book is an excellent text for understanding physical metallurgy for the beginner . This is also an excellent reference manual for later information.

RF/Microwave Hybrids: Basics, Materials and Processes

RF/Microwave Hybrids: Basics, Materials and Processes
    Richard Brown | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | Springer; 1 edition (December 31, 2002) | 280 | Electrical Engineering
RF/Microwave Hybrids is directed to acquaint technical managers, engineers and technicians, either with experience, or just entering the field, with the capabilities and limitations of the materials and processes used for fabricating high frequency circuits. It is essentially introductory in nature. Where possible, equations have been kept simple and to a minimum. This text begins with an introduction to hybrid technology and basic high frequency principles. Following these, the major forms of transmission waveguide are discussed, and then current flow and loss considerations. Substrates, thick and thin film deposition, polymers, artwork, masks, photolithography, subtractive, additive and semi-additive methods, electro- and electroless plating and etching are covered. Passive and transmission line components are then treated within the confines of process requirements. With this background established, the text is directed toward the effects of processing and materials on passive and transmission line-based components. Packaging is discussed with emphasis on inductance considerations.

    Loren D. Lutes,Shahram Sarkani | 2003-12-16 00:00:00 | Butterworth-Heinemann | 512 | Engineering
The topic of Introduction to Random Vibrations is the behavior of structural and mechanical systems when they are subjected to unpredictable, or random, vibrations. These vibrations may arise from natural phenomena such as earthquakes or wind, or from human-controlled causes such as the stresses placed on aircraft at takeoff and landing. Study and mastery of this topic enables engineers to design and maintain structures capable of withstanding random vibrations, thereby protecting human life.

Introduction to Random Vibrations will lead readers in a user-friendly fashion to a thorough understanding of vibrations of linear and nonlinear systems that undergo stochastic-random-excitation.

    · Provides over 150 worked out example problems and, along with over 225 exercises, illustrates concepts with true-to-life engineering design problems

    · Offers intuitive explanations of concepts within a context of mathematical rigor and relatively advanced analysis techniques.

    · Essential for self-study by practicing engineers, and for instruction in the classroom.

Media Control: The Spectacular Achievements of Propaganda [AUDIO]
    Noam Chomsky | 2008-01-01 00:00:00 | | 0 | Audio Books
On this original recording, Chomsky delivers a provocative lecture exemplary of the media analysis that is his signature. Arguing that "propaganda is to democracy what the bludgeon is to a totalitarian state," Chomsky sketches the triumphs of U.S. propaganda from the Wilson era through the first Bush administration.

Written in the wake of Gulf War I, this insightful lecture touches on the machinations of Bush Sr.'s war propaganda. As such, Media Control is a timely and haunting reminder of propaganda's proven hazard: the repetition of our most nightmarish history.

Professor Noam Chomsky has been declared "arguably the most important intellectual alive" by The New York Times. He is the author of numerous groundbreaking bestsellers on linguistics, foreign policy and media.

    Very Good !
Very good and easy to understand book , show us through the pratice every ` how to make ` in this software !

    User review
If you are new to Reason like me, you'll love this book
I have used Propellerheads products in the past (Rebirth, Recycle, etc.) so I was loosely familiar with some of the technology already.

But Reason is a beast. A complicated, intimidating, but amazingly powerful beast. The interface looks so complex if you have no prior experience with hardware synth programming, it can be nigh impossible to find an entry point without feeling completely overwhelmed.

If that sounds like how you feel about the software, then you'll absolutely love this book. Matt Piper is the host at a social mixer, and all the Reason instruments are guests; He leads you around the party and introduces you to each one. You never stay with any one guest too long, and you don't get too deep in conversation with any of them, but by the end of the night, you'll be familiar enough with them all that you'll know how to strike up a conversation on your own next time.

This book does not walk you through the production of a full-song, which would have been really useful -- it sticks with doing 2-4 looped bars and focuses more on the exploration of what you COULD do with the instruments. After reading this book, I felt like I had a better understanding of what is possible (although certainly not *ALL* that is possible). It also does not cover *EVERY* module in Reason, but it does cover all of the Instruments, including in-depth programming with Thor, Malstrom, and Subtractor, as well as many of the sequencing / accessory devices (RPG-8, Matrix, some of the sound fx modules), Combinator, and the samplers (NN-19 and NN-XT, although only at the surface).

One of the most helpful aspects of this particular text was that Piper includes screenshots that illustrate the steps of each exercise, with numbered arrows indicating where each step happens (this was EXTREMELY useful on the Thor exercises, since it has so many knobs).

If you're already familiar with Reason (any version) this book will probably not be very helpful to you at all; as the subtitle says, it is a `visual guide for new users`.

    One additional note:

Ideally, you will want to have a MIDI keyboard (I just picked up an M-Audio Oxygen 8 on ebay for right around $50); if you do not have one handy, you can still get through the book quite well with a keyboard emulator such as `Sweet Little Piano`. It doesn't have velocity sensing, so 2 or 3 of the exercises won't be possible, but it works well enough for everything else.

    Get Started With Reason

Excellent Companion to the Manual or Reason Power 4.
Ignite is a fabulous way to get up-and-running quickly in Reason 4.0! It doesn't provide all of the details or the manual or Reason Power 4, and it doesn't pretend to try. However, it does get you operational on creating tunes using Reason quickly, providing a fantastic overview with a few tips thrown in. I've been using Reason for a while, and even found some of the content helpful for showing me things I wasn't taking advantage of.

Lord Eight Wind of Suchixtlan and the Heroes of Ancient Oaxaca: Reading History in the Codex Zouche-Nuttall (Linda Schele Series in Maya and Pre-Columbian Studies)

Lord Eight Wind of Suchixtlan and the Heroes of Ancient Oaxaca: Reading History in the Codex Zouche-Nuttall (Linda Schele Series in Maya and Pre-Columbian Studies)
    Robert Lloyd Williams | 2009-11-15 00:00:00 | University of Texas Press | 240 | Mexico

In the pre-Hispanic Mesoamerican world, histories and collections of ritual knowledge were often presented in the form of painted and folded books now known as codices, and the knowledge itself was encoded into pictographs. Eight codices have survived from the Mixtec peoples of ancient Oaxaca, Mexico; a part of one of them, the Codex Zouche-Nuttall, is the subject of this book. As a group, the Mixtec codices contain the longest detailed histories and royal genealogies known for any indigenous people in the western hemisphere. The Codex Zouche-Nuttall offers a unique window into how the Mixtecs themselves viewed their social and political cosmos without the bias of western European interpretation. At the same time, however, the complex calendrical information recorded in the Zouche-Nuttall has made it resistant to historical, chronological analysis, thereby rendering its narrative obscure.

In this pathfinding work, Robert Lloyd Williams presents a methodology for reading the Codex Zouche-Nuttall that unlocks its essentially linear historical chronology. Recognizing that the codex is a combination of history in the European sense and the timelessness of myth in the Native American sense, he brings to vivid life the history of Lord Eight Wind of Suchixtlan (AD 935-1027), a ruler with the attributes of both man and deity, as well as other heroic Oaxacan figures. Williams also provides context for the history of Lord Eight Wind through essays dealing with Mixtec ceremonial rites and social structure, drawn from information in five surviving Mixtec codices.

Biological Psychiatry, Volume 14 (Principles of Medical Biology)

Biological Psychiatry, Volume 14 (Principles of Medical Biology)
    Edward Bittar | 2000-01-10 00:00:00 | Elsevier Science | 662 | Internal Medicine
It is now widely recognised that biological psychiatry is rapidly coming into its own. For over the last three decades dramatic advances in this young discipline have been made, all of which attest to the staying power of the experimental method. Those who made this revolution in knowledge happen are a breed of investigators availing themselves of the tools of molecular biology, pharmacology, genetics, and perhaps, above all, the technology of neuroimaging. The introduction of the interdisciplinary method of approach to the study of psychopathology had made it very clear that neuroimaging, as a set of techniques, is unique in that it is gradually providing us with evidence supporting Kraepelin's original view that mental illness is closely associated with abnormal changes in the brain.
Broadly speaking, there are presently two structural techniques in neuroimaging - computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) - and three functional techniques - single photon emission tomography (SPECT), positron emission tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Through PET technology, for example, we have learned that, in early brain development, the primitive areas, mostly the brain stem and thalamus, are the first to show high activity in an infant. This is followed by the development of cortical areas by year one. Between the ages of four to 10, the cortex is almost twice as active in the child as in the adult. This information alerts us to what might happen in the way of trauma in abused children, especially those under the age of three. Child abuse increases the risk of physical changes, not only in the stress systems, but also in brain development (Glaser and Weissman). In addition to the difficult problem of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), we have to take into account the possibility of other types of mental illness as the consequences of child abuse. These include depression, eating disorders, and drug and alcohol problems.
The combination of PET and fMRI represents a more remarkable example of the power of neuroimaging since the two have made it feasible to map accurately in vitro identifiable cortical fields, or networks. In a landmark NIH investigation of human cortical reorganization (plasticity), persuasive evidence was brought forward showing that the process of learning as a motor task involves a specific network of neurons. These neurons occur in the cortical field that is responsible for that particular task. Such findings are important partly because they provide evidence supporting the current notion that labor in the cortex is divided among ensembles of specialized neurons that cooperate in the performance of complex tasks. Cooperation, then, in this, sense implies crosstalk among ensembles and that signals are both processed and retransmitted to neighbouring ensembles. To understand the workings of these ensembles, much better spatial and temporal resolution in functional brain mapping is required. This can be achieved with an NMR instrument whose magnet is 4.1 Tesla or more.

Hardbound. The scope of service provided by professional accountants is influenced by legislation and case law as well as the dictates of a variety of government and private sector agencies: including State Boards of Accountancy, Academic Accreditation Bodies, the United States Securities and Exchange Commission, the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board, independent standard setting bodies such as the Federal Accounting Standards Advisory Board (US), the Financial Accounting Standards Board (US), the International Accounting Standards Board and self-regulatory organizations such as State Societies of CPA and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. There are equivalent and emerging local international bodies that exist in most developed countries. It is important for academics, students, practitioners, regulators and researchers to consider, study and understand the role and relationship of such bodies with the practice and content of
