Five Minds for the Future (Your Coach in a Box)

Five Minds for the Future (Your Coach in a Box)
Howard Gardner | 2008-06-03 00:00:00 | Your Coach In A Box | 0 | Leadership
We live in a time of changes that include accelerating globalization, mounting quantities of information, the growing hegemony of science and technology, and the clash of civilizations. Those changes call for new ways of learning and thinking in school, business, and the professions. In this audiobook, psychologist Howard Gardner defines the cognitive abilities that will command a premium in the years ahead:

  • The disciplinary mind - master of major schools of thought.

  • The synthesizing mind - ability to integrate ideas.

  • The creating mind - capacity to uncover and clarity problems, questions and phenomena.

  • The respectful mind - awareness of and appreciation for differences among human beings.

  • The ethical mind - fulfillment of one's responsibilities.
Armed with these well-honed capacities, a person will be equipped to deal with what is expected in the future-as well as what cannot be anticipated. Without these "minds," individuals will be at the mercy of forces they can't understand-overwhelmed by information, unable to succeed in the workplace, and incapable of making judicious decisions about personal and professional matters.
Reviews
This is an excellent summary of Gardners life as a thinker and educator. While his prose is always graduate level reading, the

timeless reference to focusing and staying focused is a needed skill, not only for current educators, teachers, instructors, but for everyone wanting to reach a goal. As always, Garners works stays on the shelf as reference and is referenced frequently.

Reviews
This modularization of what man needs too succeed in the future just does not make sense to me. It feels more like a corporate agenda. Probably meant to touch a chord for CEO's and like types so that the author can be hired to lecture to their minions on how they should think.

I've read something like 150 pages of the book and I feel that I'm wasting my time.

One flaw is that the five mind concepts are quite interdependant and overlapping. That just tells me that is most probably not the right approach. Try to make sense of it and it will only pose more questions exponentially.

Proposals for guidelines I would make would be for example; there is not a formula for everything, uncertainty is what makes life fun, both people and disciplines should approach each other more "socially" for the bigger picture orchestration of human reality. Just as our concious mind comes about because of a wholistic effect of our cells that we'll never understand, the earth and our descendants need us to work for a better world. Seeing the state of the world today I would not trust a CEO to get the job done.
Reviews
My only problem with the paperback edition of this book is the tiny font size. It appears that the hard cover text files were just shrunken down to fit the smaller paperback size. Thus, while the hardcover edition may have had normal-size text, in the paperback edition the text has shrunken to a 9 point font or even an 8 point font. Talk about eye strain.

I've seen this before with UK editions of US books, but this is the worst example I've seen of a hardcover-to-paperback transfer in a US edition.
Reviews
I knew Howard Gardner from his research on multiple intelligences. A friend gave me his book Five minds for the future. I was absolutely delighted by the view he takes. We must help our children to meet with these 'minds'. This is possible only if education itself reconsiders its goals and approach.
Reviews
Howard Gardner is well known for his development of a theory of multiple intelligences (in contrast to the simplistic notion of a single intelligence measurable by something like IQ). In this book, he goes a step further by describing five "minds" which he believes will need to be cultivated in order for individuals and groups to flourish in the future. This cultivation will require substantial reform of our educational systems, will need to continue for each individual as a lifelong pursuit, and will need to be balanced (in the best liberal arts tradition) in a way that encompasses the arts and humanities along with the usual mathematics, science, and technology.

In my opinion, Gardner's proposed five minds pass the basic test of being reasonably distinct from each other. It could be debated whether additional minds need to be added, but I think that they cover plenty of ground, and are at least an excellent starting point. The five minds can be summarized as follows:

1. The Disciplined Mind has mastered the distinctive ways of thinking associated with a scholarly discipline, craft, profession, or other practice. The resulting expertise goes well beyond the erroneous or inadequate approaches laypeople would employ, and often involves the ability to conceptualize problems in multiple ways. Such mastery doesn't generally come naturally and therefore typically takes about a decade of steady effort to develop, followed by continued education and practice to maintain it; coaching and mentoring can be a big help in this regard.

2. The Synthesizing Mind is skilled in drawing information from various sources and organizing it in sensible ways, making useful connections while avoiding false or unproductive ones. Since we tend to operate in domain-specific ways and are driven toward specialization, synthesis doesn't come naturally, but we yearn for it. We often achieve it in the form of narratives, taxonomies, complex concepts, rules, aphorisms, metaphors, themes, theories, metatheories, works of art, etc. Interdisciplinary work explicitly aims for synthesis.

3. The Creating Mind breaks new ground by putting forth new ideas, new ways of thinking, unfamiliar questions, and unexpected answers, and then ideally also gaining their acceptance by others. Not surprisingly, creators are much rarer than "mere" experts and have traits like willingness to deviate from the crowd, perseverance in the face of difficulties and failures, comfort with turbulence, and eagerness to continue pushing boundaries (even after achieving success). But creativity isn't simply a result of individual "genius," since sociocultural context can also play a large role.

4. The Respectful Mind recognizes and accepts the diversity among individuals and groups and thereby shows tolerance and the ability to collaborate effectively with others. Ever-intensifying globalization makes development of the respectful mind an imperative.

5. The Ethical Mind ponders one's work and society's needs at a more abstract level than the respectful mind, and then finds ways to go beyond self-interest and instead also serve others. Ethical work is "good work" in the senses of being of excellent quality, responsible to the community, and engaging in a way that provides meaning.

Gardner does an excellent job in this book of fleshing out the five minds and illustrating their importance. He does this by drawing on his formidable erudition and giving a wonderfully diverse range of great examples. His writing is also exceptionally clear and the book is very well organized. As a result, I found it very easy and enjoyable to read.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in their own personal development and continuing education, the education and development of their children, service to society, and the welfare of the world. This book has made me an appreciative fan of Gardner and I look forward to reading his other books. Taking Brand Initiative: How Companies Can Align Strategy, Culture, and Identity Through Corporate Branding (Wiley Desktop Editions)

Taking Brand Initiative: How Companies Can Align Strategy, Culture, and Identity Through Corporate Branding (Wiley Desktop Editions)
Mary Jo Hatch,Majken Schultz | 2008-03-07 00:00:00 | Jossey-Bass | 288 | Marketing
Taking Brand Initiative offers a revolutionary approach to corporate branding that looks beyond the marketing value of brands company-to-customer and the HR significance of brands company-to-employee. It places the management of brands at the senior level of management as it radiates throughout the organization. In this groundbreaking book, international branding thought leaders, Mary Jo Hatch and Make Schultz explain how a company's brand is just as important to ÒoutsidersÓÑpoliticians, suppliers, and analysts as it is to company insiders. They show how only the corporate brand can integrate all the company's staff functions and provide a vision for competition and globalization.
Reviews
this book is a healthy holistic view of a corporate brand, emphasizing the importance of alignment for internal, external and strategic elements in order to create and sustain a powerful brand. Good examples are used throughout.
Reviews
Taking Brand Initiative is hands-down one of the top five books on brand development. The authors provide the reader with a series of case studies of organizations that have been successful in developing brands that the authors refer to as the enterprise mind-set, and those that have fallen short or are not quite there yet. I love what the authors refer to as the Culture, Vision and Images alignment model of brand development. This is a must read for anyone engaged in their organization's brand building efforts.

Gender in Bolivian Production: Reducing Differences in Formality and Productivity of Firms (World Bank Country Study)

Gender in Bolivian Production: Reducing Differences in Formality and Productivity of Firms (World Bank Country Study)
World Bank | 2009-08-21 00:00:00 | World Bank Publications | 80 | Finance
Bolivia s informal economic sector is the largest in Latin America, and women-owned businesses tend to be overrepresented in the informal sector and to be less profitable than firms in the formal sector. This study seeks to better understand gender-based differences in firms tendencies toward formality, the impact of formality on profits, and the productivity of small informal firms. Using data from firm surveys, national household surveys, and qualitative data from focus groups, the study conducts a gender analysis of formality and productivity in six different sectors in Bolivia. The findings shed new light on how gender-based differences contribute to a firm s decision to become formal and the consequences of this decision for profitability. The outcomes of the study suggest that policies should focus on increasing the productivity and scale of women-owned businesses. Two general priorities emerge: promoting women s access to productive assets to facilitate growth and productivity and providing an enabling environment for women s entrepreneurship by expanding women s choices and capacity to respond to market opportunities.

All The Pretty Dead Girls

All The Pretty Dead Girls
John Manning | 2009-01-01 00:00:00 | Pinnacle | 484 | Fiction Other
All the Pretty Dead Girls is more of a horror story and I do not like horror stories. I was in a situation that I had alot of free time so, of course, I took that book as my new serial killer book. Imagine the shock when I realized I had a different kind of book. If I had not been trapped with only one book I would have thrown it away. I had the choice of reading it or counting tiles on the floor. Relucently I started it. After the second chapter I was hooked. I have just finished it, enjoyed it, and am looking for another by him. What a surprise and I have learned a lesson.

This book has an academic layout. It is for those persons who want to learn the ins and outs of the Vista Operating system. It is very detailed and thorough. My rating is 4-star since it does not come with a Workbook.

Take the scenic route
Another operating system from those guys at Microsoft so another Visual Quickstart Guide to the rescue. In June 2003 I bought a new pc with XP loaded and reviewed Chris Fehily's excellent hands-on book to that system. This new title has an extra 136 pages because Vista does more and the text explains the differences (where required) between the various versions of the software.

The Peachpit editorial format really works well making a ton of information very accessible. Every page has two columns with any screen shots fitting into the inside ones. The step-by-step copy leads you through the various on-screen options and hundreds of Tips suggest even more choices. Sidebars are printed on grey panels and here Fehily provides background information. Incidentally his writing style is easy and casual, another plus point for the book.

The twenty chapters obviously cover all the essentials and nicely over the page from the Contents a more detailed contents gives a fuller breakdown of each chapter. A ten page Appendix 'Installing Windows Vista' might be just what you're looking for if it is not pre-installed. I mentioned in my XP book review how important an index is for this sort of book and this Vista edition has a twenty-three pager, which I reckon is more than 2500 references.

There are already several Vista books available and I've looked at some aimed at the same reader as Chris Fehily's book but to my mind they lack the easy to follow format and rely on a straight copy approach backed up with too few screenshots. Also some seem rather costly despite Amazon's low prices. However if you are new to it all and feel that you want something really easy Microsoft publish a very simple and colorful guide Windows Vista(TM) Plain & Simple (Bpg-Plain & Simple), so that you can (as Chapter 2 puts it) Jump Right In.

I think it is worth stressing that Fehily's book is basically aimed at beginners and intermediate users (like me). Advanced pc folk will no doubt find it very frustrating but there are plenty of copy heavy books for them.

HP-UX Virtual Partitions

HP-UX Virtual Partitions
Marty Poniatowski | 2002-03-04 00:00:00 | Pearson Education | 1056 | PCs
Virtual Partitions (vPars) enable you to transform virtually any HP 9000 system into multiple "virtual computers," each running their own instance of HP-UX and associated applications. Now, one of the world's leading HP-UX experts presents a comprehensive guide to vPars that covers everything you need to succeed with this breakthrough technology. Poniatowski introduces vPars' key concepts, explaining how vPars enables multiple virtual computers to be fully isolated from each other on the same HP 9000 server -- running multiple instances of HP-UX 11i, different patch levels, and different applications. He then covers not only every vPars command, as well as the system administration techniques you need to take full advantage of it. He walks setting up and configuring vPars; then covers every aspect of managing HP-UX, including working with device files; using System Administration Manager (SAM) and Service Control Manager (SCM); adding peripherals, users, and groups; utilizing Ignite-UX; performing backups; and more. For every HP-UX administrator, and for sophisticated HP-UX users seeking to benefit from vPars technology.
Reviews
Having already read much literature on Vpars, I found Mr. Paniotowski's Virtual Partition Book to be no more than adequate on the primary subject matter. At 1000+ pages there is a enormous amount information dedicated to all things HP-UX - and most of this is non-vpars specific. Not that I don't appreciate the lagniappe, but the book reads like an "HP-UX Guide to Systems Administration" rather than a "Guru's Insight Into Virtual Partitions". If you are looking to gain insight into Vpars and the SuperDome, you'll get a whopping 14 pages dedicated to this subject matter as Paniotowski based nearly all of his work on the L and N class systems. On a positive note, after reading the few chapters that were actually dedicated to vpars, I did learn a few things that I had not come across in other literature. Paniotowski needs to produce a 2nd Edition of this book that focuses exclusively on Virtual Partitions and has far more subject manner dedicated to the SuperDome.
Reviews
Most HP-UX professionals recognize Marty Poniatowski as the premier source for system administration guidance. Now, Marty helps us understand the new field of Virtual Partitioning. His book is a perfect guide to "vPars", showing not only how to configure them, but also showing why you need to learn about this product. Marty points out the many benefits organizations can gain by splitting one physical system into several smaller virtual systems. Among these are increased system utilization, server consolidation, and the ability to easily migrate between a development and production environment.
I work with an HP Channel Partner and can say that several of my customers have implemented vPars on equipment that was underutilized. For example, servers that were only running at 20 percent of capacity are now running several instances of HP-UX and utilizing 60 to 70 percent of their capacity.
Marty not only gives you the commands you need to configure vPars, but helps you understand the prerequisites for partitioning a system. He also guides you through many other system administration tasks which you must modify in order to best utilize your "virtual systems".
I can't say enough in this space to do justice to this book. Read it, YOU and your company will benefit.
Reviews
This book was exactly what I was looking for - clearly written, technically detailed and accurate. Plenty of practical information and examples.

The book has a nice intro section which would be useful to readers who are new to the concepts of Virtual Partitioning of server resources.

Marty has written this with several other experts. He has lots of practical experience and it shows in his explanations.

Lots of useful screen shots and a bunch of additional technical resources provided.
Reviews
I just recently acquired, much to my delight, Poniatowski's latest HP-UX Virtual Partition creation, and this gentleman has outdone himself. I am amassing a library collection of Poniatowski's UNIX resources, and HP-UX Virtual Partitions is my newest acquisition, and it is superbly written. Achieving such outstanding publishing is nothing new to Poniatowski. He is the quintessence of UNIX pundit-gurus. My introduction to Poniatowski's UNIX Administration was initially through my purchase of his UNIX User's Handbook, another outstanding and superb volume text.
Poniatowski is extremely thorough, clear and lucid, and
has a highly brilliant writing style. His brilliance is demonstrated by his taking technical data from his stratosphere-level of competence, and expressing it in such a lucid fashion
as to make it easily understandable and useful for relative
newcomers to UNIX. Hard as I may try, I cannot recommend
either of these works too highly. Poniatowski is par excellence

with UNIX Administration. Any serious UNIX Administrator cannot
afford to pass up his books, which are absolutely priced at
a bargain by any standard. HP-UX Virtual Partition is a must-have for any HP 9000 User, and the concept of Virtual Partitions
is both efficient and brilliant. Don't Miss !!!

"The Broadway Sound": The Autobiography and Selected Essays of Robert Russell Bennett (Eastman Studies in Music)

"The Broadway Sound": The Autobiography and Selected Essays of Robert Russell Bennett (Eastman Studies in Music)
Robert Russell Bennett | 2000-03-10 00:00:00 | University of Rochester Press | 375 | Theater
The remarkable career of composer-orchestrator Robert Russell Bennett (1894-1981) encompassed a wide variety of both "legitimate" and popular music-making in Hollywood, on Broadway, and for television. Bennett is principally responsible for what is known worldwide as the "Broadway sound" and for greatly elevating the status of the theater orchestrator. He worked alongside Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Richard Rodgers, and Frederick Loewe on much of the Broadway canon, eventually providing orchestrations for all or part of more than 300 musicals between 1920 and 1975. This work is the first publication of Bennett's autobiography, which was written in the late 1970s. It also includes eight of his most important essays on the art of orchestration. George J. Ferencz is professor of music at the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater.
Reviews
As a musician I have always admired Robert Russell Bennett's arrangements. Arrangements contribute more to the success of a musical composition than most listeners realize, and I often wondered about Bennett's role in the success of Richard Rogers musicals. And I wondered about his work. The Broadway Sound is a fascinating read, every bit as interesting as Bennett arrangements.

Sams Teach Yourself Visual Basic 6 in 21 Days

Sams Teach Yourself Visual Basic 6 in 21 Days
| 1998-08-13 00:00:00 | | 0 | Visual Basic

`Wordy and plodding, but a nicely paced introduction to the Visual Basic world.`

This book has all the earmarks of a series designed in-house. This is a bad thing. It means the book contains elements that obviously are the result of compromises made by people sitting through endless meetings and eventually settling on the most stubborn person's ideas because, well, everyone was tired and wanted to go home and watch the Pacers game on TV. And none of those people actually have read any computer books, let alone tried to learn a programming language from one.

The in-house style earmarks are aplenty: the ubiquitous Do and Do Not sidebars; Note and Tip boxes; the New Term paragraphs; Summaries; Q&As; Workshops; and end-of-chapter quizzes and exercises. Gadzooks. Whatever happened to an experienced programmer trying to explain the best way to learn something in well-written, down-to-earth, right-to-the-point prose? Well, you won't find it here, not in your allotted three weeks.

On the plus side, this book does have you create your first program on page 24 (day one), which is pretty quick. It's not really a program, though--it's a `project,` or something that Visual Basic can whip together for anyone who's ever used one of the Windows wizards. Is that cheating? I don't know. But I'll give Greg Perry a happy face for letting the reader actually do something at that early stage of the game.

As with any book on Visual Basic, the decision is whether to document the programming language or the application environment first. Like everyone else, Perry documents the environment for the first week or so. (At which point I'm beginning to wonder whether any book will bother to document the programming language itself.) And I do admire his logical flow; the days and weeks build on each other nicely. The pace is pretty even throughout the book.

On the downside, the book has no soul. It's really routine and, well, kind of boring. The programs lack some of the insanity you would find in Wally Wang's Dummies book. But I do like the way Perry presents the steps--at over 800 pages, he gives his steps the space they need. Not bad, but, peppered with some insights, it could have been better. --Dan Gookin

User review
An OK book
At first I was completely put off by the other reviewers bashing this book. Then a friend of mine bought it and I got a chance to finally hold it in the flesh. I agree with most reviews, but I think that this badly organized book has its place. For anyone willing to put up with the horribly layout of the book, some hidden gems can be found. For example, I've never found any other author outlaying the basic for printing from VB6 as easily and clear as stated in this book. Also, you can find a couple of useful excerpts (not full chapters, mind you) for the young programmer.

I think that many of the VB6 crowd (well, programmers in general) are a bit harsh: some are completely newbies regarding programming skills and some are know-it-all geeks. For them this book is almost completely useless. But for me, having a 15+ years plus in programming (BASIC and FORTRAN) this book is worth the money (barely), specially a used one.

I'd give it 1 stars for the many examples, 1 for the print section, 1 for the hand-holding and half a star for many funny moments throughout the book.

Sure, the book isn't perfect but ,,.
the author did post his errata online and this book isn't really all that bad for those who'd like a decent intro to Visual Basic unlike what the book's haters would like to have you believe.

Thumbs Down!
I bought this book because I got my start in computer science by learning ASP with a Sams book. Since that time I have earned my associates degree and am about to complete my BS in computer science.

As everyone else has already stated the book has many type errors. The most basic and obvious concepts are repeted over and over while the most complex issues are glossed over completely. My final and ultimate dissapointment in the book can in chapter 19, Connecting to the internet. The book has the reader do this in the very begining with a small paragraph explaining how you select 'yes' for the internet browser option while using the VB Aplication Wizard. So why devote an entire chapter explaining the same thing? Oh, the author does tell you about two other very important types of internet connections you can make using VB but it is just a mention. He does tell you what HTML is and show an example. HTML? give me a break I want the VB! Finally the chapter is concluded with a note, `This chapter is a high level overveiw of internet connectivity using VB. for a compete understanding buy another book.` I would say by `high level overveiw` he means from far, far away, glossed over. Chapter 19 should never been put in print. I don't think the author thinks his readers are up to the task of comprehending the more complex programming issues. Or, he thinks we are just going to run out and buy another book in hope of finding the rest of the details. Well, he is correct I will be getting another book but it will not be one of his, and I don't know if I can ever trust Sams Publishing again.

This book should be re-named `Sams Give Yourself a breif Introduction to Some of Visual Basic's Easy Concepts.`

For Job related Business Programming: Good source
Hmm this is weird, I am the only one who is writing a good review on this book. Whats up with that. Maybe the people who wrote the reviews are not actually programmers but confused minds. Please accept my apologies. I think this book is a very good source on VB 6.0. I used this during my Master's Program, during my Internship and in my professional life. I dont know what people are expecting, but this is a good medium level fast paced source on VB 6.0. If you have to write a quick VB App, and dont have much time on your hands, pick up this book. If you want to be a VB guru then this is not what you want. But for starters and quick reference people who use VB 6.0 from time to time, I would highly recomment this one.

User review
The worst VB 6.0 book a true beginner could ever buy!!!
I have been struggling to learn VB 6.0 with this book, and I will tell you, it is terrible. The book starts out great, with a very thorough explanation and it doesn't overwhelm you. But, all the details it tells you not to worry about come back to haunt you as you progress. They don't just come back to haunt you; they slam you hard. This book goes from a snail's pace to WAYYYYY too fast, in a matter of pages. The book leaves out a ton of details. In one instance, you are asked to create a form with option buttons (radio buttons) that respond to the user clicking them with messages; well, they never even tell you how to write the code for an option button in the section that was supposed to cover it!!!!!! Horrible stuff here, people. To make matters worse, the book is strewn with a ton of errors! The very first problem they have you code has a mistake in it, that only a more advanced programmer would pick up on. The errors continue thoroughout the book and, in some cases, the whole program is completely out of wack. Not only this, but there are not many good sample problems to solve and the examples they give are incomplete, which only adds to the confusion. Simply do not buy this book if you are a true beginner and if you are not, then why would you need this book anyway???? I cannot recommend this at all, and am only giving it 2 stars based on the fact that it has a decent introduction to the VB world, but the substance is flawed. This book almost made me hate VB. Please stay away everybody:(

FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS

FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS
Ernest Hemingway | 1968-01-01 00:00:00 | Mary Hemingway | 1 | Fiction
In 1937 Ernest Hemingway traveled to Spain to cover the civil war there for the North American Newspaper Alliance. Three years later he completed the greatest novel to emerge from "the good fight," _For Whom the Bell Tolls_. The story of Robert Jordan, a young American in the International Brigades attached to an antifascist guerilla unit in the mountains of Spain, it tells of loyalty and courage, love and defeat, and the tragic death of an ideal. In his portrayal of Jordan's love for the beautiful Maria and his suberb account of El Sordo's last stand, in his brilliant travesty of La Pasionaria and his unwillingness to believe in blind faith, Hemingway surpasses his achievement in _The Sun Also Rises_ and _A Farewell to Arms_ to create a work at once rare and beautiful, strong and brutal, compassionate, moving and wise. "If the function of a writer is to reveal reality," Maxwell Perkins wrote to Hemingway after reading the manuscript, "no one ever so completely performed it." Greater in power, broader in scope, and more intensely emotional than any of the author's previous works, it stands as one of the best war novels of all time.

The Gods of Ancient Greece: Identities and Transformations

The Gods of Ancient Greece: Identities and Transformations
Jan N. Bremmer, Andrew Erskine | 2010-01-01 00:00:00 | Edinburgh University Press | 448 | History
Greek mythology still grabs the modern consciousness. Apollo and Dionysos, Artemis and Aphrodite, Zeus and Hermes& mdash;but what exactly did these divinities stand for? A team of international scholars offer fresh insight into the making and meaning of Greek mythology. They recount the stories and significance of individual gods and ask to what extent cult, myth, and literary genre determine the nature of divinity. How do Greek gods function within a polytheistic pantheon, and what is their connection to the heroes of their myths? What is the influence of philosophy and in what way do the gods of late antiquity differ from those of classical Greece? This volume presents a synchronic and diachronic view of these characters in the decades before Christianity.

Oxford Handbook of Rheumatology (Oxford Handbooks Series)

Oxford Handbook of Rheumatology (Oxford Handbooks Series)
Alan Hakim,Gavin Clunie,Inam Haq | 2006-09-28 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press, USA | 640 | Internal Medicine
The Oxford Handbook of Rheumatology is a unique, pocket guide which emphasizes the clinical evidence-based approach to Rheumatology. Based on the content of the Oxford Textbook of Rheumatology, it provides practical guidelines to the management and diagnosis of patients with acute and chronic musculoskeletal disease. This new edition has been extensively updated and revised throughout to include the latest NICE guidelines and new chapters on rheumatic emergencies, drugs, chronic widespread pain, shoulder/neck pain and complementary medicine. It includes information on an expanded number of conditions and the new biologic therapies used in the treatment of inflammatory arthritis and connective tissue diseases. There is also greater emphasis on paediatric advice and management of the adolescent. The first section serves as a pragmatic guide to making a diagnosis given the characteristic way patients present with symptoms: what signs to look for; how to separate good reliable information from less valid information; how to investigate pragmatically and efficiently and finally how to manage. Useful information on the occurrence of rheumatic disease associated with other diseases is included. Written with an international audience in mind, incorporating UK, European, and US disease criteria where possible, the second section gives a run down of the main conditions seen by Rheumatologists. It covers soft-tissue rheumatology, backpain, degenerative diseases and all the more common and rare autoimmune diseases. Taking an evidence-based approach, this handbook emphasizes the clinical approach to rheumatic disease and is an essential guide for anyone who deals with patients with musculoskeletal disease.
Reviews
This is a practical and useful handbook for rheumatologists in training, GPs and specialist nurses. It is particularly strong on musculoskeletal medicine. Being a handbook it cannot be exhaustive on complex disorders such as connective tissue diseases. It has a good section on joint injection techniques and is strong on diagnostic dilemmas. I take it to clinics and find it very useful.

Heroes and Martyrs of Palestine: The Politics of National Commemoration (Cambridge Middle East Studies)

Heroes and Martyrs of Palestine: The Politics of National Commemoration (Cambridge Middle East Studies)
Laleh Khalili | 2007-04-30 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 274 | Lebanon
Many decades have passed since the Palestinian national movement began its political and military struggle. In that time, poignant memorials at massacre sites, a palimpsest of posters of young heroes and martyrs, sorrowful reminiscences about lost loved ones, and wistful images of young men and women who fought as guerrillas, have all flourished in Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon and in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. Heroes and Martyrs of Palestine tells the story of how dispossessed Palestinians have commemorated their past, and how through their dynamic everyday narrations, their nation has been made even without the institutional memory-making of a state. Bringing ethnography to political science, Khalili invites us to see Palestinian nationalism in its proper international context and traces its affinities with Third Worldist movements of its time, while tapping a rich and oft-ignored seam of Palestinian voices, histories, and memories.

Georgics (Oxford World's Classics)

Georgics (Oxford World's Classics)
Virgil | 2006-09-07 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press, USA | 160 | Classics
Virgil's affectionate poem of the land brings us the disappointments as well as the rewards of the countryman's year-round devotion to his crops, his vines and olives, livestock great and small, and the complex society of his bees. Part agricultural manual, part political poem and allegory, The Georgics' scenes are real and vivid, allowing the reader to feel the sights, sounds, and textures of the ancient Italian landscape.
This lauded new translation has been written by Peter Fallon, who, as a farmer and a poet, is uniquely suited to the task. It is coupled here with an introduction and notes by the classical scholar Elaine Fantham. Fantham's introduction considers Virgil's life and poetry in its historical context, while her notes gloss the many classical and mythological allusions. The combination of a faithful and lyrical translation with well-researched contextual information makes this edition the best possible introduction to Virgil's masterpiece. It is sure to delight all lovers of poetry and Renaissance literature.
Reviews
Peter Fallon's translation seems anything but stilted--earthy, colorful, rhythmical, it is sheer delight.

I wasn't sure at first whether a long didactic poem on agriculture would be gripping, but I thoroughly enjoyed reading the "Georgics." Many of Virgil's images and descriptions of nature are meltingly beautiful, and the deeper philosophical stratum of this work produces a constant intellecutal tension--ultimately, this poem investigates to what extent "the good life" is possible in this world, what is the balance between good and evil, to what extent our good efforts and labors are rewarded, how we are to position ourselves spiritually in this ambiguous, hard-to-understand universe... From an ecological standpoint, Virgil examines how we are to relate and live in harmony with our environment. Many mythological stories are woven in, and Peter Fallon's notes help one understand historical and mythological allusions without any problem. The poem really is just brimming over with interesting content, and reading it to me felt like an utterly pleasurable meditative exercise. And I am truly grateful to Fallon for bringing this poem to me in a wonderfully "natural" and vivid translation, the best translation of the "Georgics" that I have been able to find.

I read the "Georgics" partly in order to understand Willa Cather's novels better, which allude to and are deeply influenced by this poem. Her works truly cannot be fully understood without a clear awareness of the Virgilian subtext. The "Georgics" are a supremely influential work of literature and should be read by anyone wishing to gain an in-depth understanding of the Western literary tradition.
Reviews
Virgil, a Roman poet who lived over 2000 years ago, writes with the same passion and vigor as Shakespeare. However, Virgil's language is Latin and his subject is country life. Peter Fallon presents this new translation of Virgil's Georgics. He calls the work, "a hymn to peace and people."

The Georgics contains four small books. This entire edition - complete with introduction, translator's notes and line notes to help modern readers through the many references to Greek and Roman mythology - runs a mere hundred pages. Book I covers farming topics that range from crop rotation and when to fallow fields, to seed saving and developing a weather eye. Virgil suggests that "if the goddess of the dawn rises wanly from her consort's saffron couch, beware ..." This ancient advice sounds similar to weather guidance I learned as a teen on the New England Coast. "Red sun at dawning, sailors take warning." Book I ends with an eternal description of war and its effects on agriculture "For right and wrong are mixed up here, there's so much warring everywhere, evil has so many faces, and there is no regard for the labors of the plough....scythes and sickles have been hammered into weapons of war."

Virgil devotes Book II to the cultivation of grapes and olives while Book III discusses the breeding and care of domesticated animals. Virgil devotes Book IV to the keeping of bees. He encourages his reader to consider bees "a small society comprising systems worthy of our high esteem." He then describes the perfect site for a hive. It must be protected from winds, close to a tree-lined stream that provides shade and water. Near the hive "let all around be gay with ... spreads of fragrant thyme and masses of aromatic savory. Let there be gardens to amuse them with the scent of brightly colored flowers." Closely observing the habits of the hive, the author states that bees "mindful that winter follows ... set to work in summer and store what they acquire for the common good. Come night, the youngsters haul themselves back home, exhausted, leg-baskets loaded down with thyme."

Some would say that Virgil's verses, dense with out-of-date politics and mythology, is irrelevant to our modern lives. But I take a gardener's point of view here. In the garden, the presence of weeds does not mean the absence of flowers.

Georgics is a book to savor after a hard day's work in garden or field. When the air becomes still and the hammock beckons, open to find how your life matches that of an ancient peer. And heed his sage advice. "The farmer's chores come round in seasons and cycles, as the earth each year retraces its own tracks.... So cast no hungry eye on a big estate if you're inclined, but tend a small one."

Reasoning Together: A Conversation on Homosexuality

Reasoning Together: A Conversation on Homosexuality
Ted Grimsrud,Mark Thiessen Nation | 2008-10-28 00:00:00 | Herald Pr | 240 | Theology
This book emerges from a series of public conversations on homosexuality by two Mennonite theology professors with clearly different perspectives on the issue. Reasoning Together expands on these conversations. The first section sets the context for the conversation, identifying the key issues and describing the differences among Christians on these issues. The second section contains the main constructive presentations from each writer along with each responding to the other. Here we have extensive theological and biblical reflection. In the third section, each writer asks the other two questions, triggering extensive give and take. The book concludes with a short chapter sketching areas of agreement amidst the disagreements that have been the focus of the earlier chapters and two annotated bibliographies.

"[T]he kingdom of God is... in the faith of the cross

and in the virtue of dialogue."

- St. Cyprian (c. 200-258)

Here at Englewood Christian Church, one of the Christian practices that has been most formational for our life together is dialogue. For the last thirteen years or so, since we nixed our Sunday evening service and began to circle up chairs and to talk together about the nature of our faith, conversation has become increasingly important in our relationships with one another and in our relationships with others outside our church. Sometimes we reach the point of intense disagreements in our conversations, but in these times we are reminded that the uniting work of the Spirit is stronger than the forces of our disagreements. I was therefore very excited when I heard about Herald Press's release of Reasoning Together: A Conversation on Homosexuality, and its promise of dialogue on one of the most emotional and divisive issues in the Church today. My experience has been that calm, thoughtful and respectful dialogue on this issue is almost non-existent. Reasoning Together is an excellent book that captures the conversations between two Mennonite scholars: Ted Grimsrud, a professor of theology and peace studies at Eastern Mennonite University and Mark Thiessen Nation, a professor of theology at Eastern Mennonite Seminary. Over the course of the book, Nation argues for the "restrictive" position, which extends a loving welcome to all regardless of sexual orientation, but restricts "the church participation of gay and lesbian Christians who are in intimate relationships" (21). On the other hand, Grimsrud defends the "inclusive" position, which makes no restrictions based solely on a person's homosexuality; however, Grimsrud does believe that in order to maintain full participation in the church community, a practicing homosexual needs to be in a committed marriage-type relationship. The authors therefore agree that within the Church, the only place for sexual intercourse is within such a covenanted relationship. As a result of this shared boundary, readers will find that many contentious questions about sexual identity, practice and politics are outside the scope of this conversation.

The conversation unfolds over the course of the book in the following format: an introductory essay by each scholar, a lengthy essay from both authors defending their position with response and counter-response, followed by two rounds of questions from each author with responses by the other author, and the conversation concludes with a chapter describes the "common ground" that the authors share. I will not recount for you here all the twists and turns that this dialogue takes, but perhaps it will be beneficial to summarize the authors' points of agreement, as named in the final chapter, because these points provide a framework for the shape of this conversation:

1) The centrality of the Bible

2) The importance of care and respect for vulnerable people

3) Affirmation of marriage as the only morally-valid context for sexual intercourse

4) Social constructivism

5) Opposition of a double standard in the churches with regard to the sexual sins of heterosexuals and gays

6) Welcoming gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and trans-gendered people into our lives and into our churches (247-250)

Given that both authors are firm in their recognition of the Bible's centrality to Christian ethics, it is not surprising that much of this dialogue explores how the biblical texts related to homosexuality should be interpreted. Grimsrud argues that, when read in context, none of the scriptural prohibitions related to homosexuality condemn all forms of homosexual practice, but rather only certain homosexual practices: e.g., between men and boys, etc. Nation, although granting that there are few such "direct texts" that squarely address homosexuality, does adhere to a more traditional interpretation that categorically prohibits homosexual practice of any form among the people of God, a position which he notes that the Church had universally affirmed until about 30 years ago. The back-and-forth of the authors on these issues of interpretation raises many important hermeneutic questions: e.g., to what extent should we rely upon the tradition of the Church in biblical interpretation, or to what extent can we fully understand and rely upon the context in which any particular passage is set? The conversation recorded in this volume, highlights the importance of such theological questions, which might otherwise seem esoteric; the ways in which we interpret scripture drive our ethics and the form our relationships will take within the Church - in this case, particularly with homosexuals.

Another striking facet of this conversation was the authors' exploration of Christian hospitality. While both authors emphasize the importance of hospitality in the Church, Nation charges that Grimsrud has made "hospitality into an overarching or programmatic theme within Scripture" instead of recognizing it as "one moral claim among many" (170). Nation states that our call to hospitality must be held in tension with our call to be a holy people. Grimsrud denies Nation's claim, noting that his calls for hospitality/inclusion are bounded by the clear scriptural rejection of certain sexual practices (e.g., promiscuity, adultery, abuse). Once again it seems that the disagreement between these scholars is centered on whether Scripture prohibits all homosexual practice or only certain practices.

This book is also an excellent resource on the theological literature related to homosexuality. Not only do the authors discuss throughout their conversations the merits and flaws of specific books, like Robert Gagnon's The Bible and Homosexual Practice, they also each include an appendix in which they offer an annotated bibliography of resources that have been useful in the formation of their respective positions. The discussion of these resources is a valuable asset to anyone who seeks to immerse themselves in further exploration of questions about homosexuality and Christian ethics.

Reasoning Together is therefore an excellent book that should be read widely in churches. Not only is it refreshing to hear calm, rational conversation on this topic by noted scholars, this book also opens the doors for us to enter into our own conversations related to sexual identity and practice. May the Spirit guide us in this way, and may our conversations be as irenic and respectful as the one offered to us in this book!

Lolita (AudioBook)

Lolita (AudioBook)
Vladimir Nabokov | 2008-01-01 00:00:00 | Hachette audio | 1 | Audio Books
Despite its lascivious reputation, the pleasures of Lolita are as much intellectual as erogenous. It is a love story with the power to raise both chuckles and eyebrows. Humbert Humbert is a European intellectual adrift in America, haunted by memories of a lost adolescent love. When he meets his ideal nymphet in the shape of 12-year-old Dolores Haze, he constructs an elaborate plot to seduce her, but first he must get rid of her mother. In spite of his diabolical wit, reality proves to be more slippery than Humbert's feverish fantasies, and Lolita refuses to conform to his image of the perfect lover.

Playfully perverse in form as well as content, riddled with puns and literary allusions, Nabokov's 1955 novel is a hymn to the Russian-born author's delight in his adopted language. Indeed, readers who want to probe all of its allusive nooks and crannies will need to consult the annotated edition. Lolita is undoubtedly, brazenly erotic, but the eroticism springs less from the "frail honey-hued shoulders ... the silky supple bare back" of little Lo than it does from the wantonly gorgeous prose that Humbert uses to recount his forbidden passion:

She was musical and apple-sweet ... Lola the bobby-soxer, devouring her immemorial fruit, singing through its juice ... and every movement she made, every shuffle and ripple, helped me to conceal and to improve the secret system of tactile correspondence between beast and beauty--between my gagged, bursting beast and the beauty of her dimpled body in its innocent cotton frock.

Much has been made of Lolita as metaphor, perhaps because the love affair at its heart is so troubling. Humbert represents the formal, educated Old World of Europe, while Lolita is America: ripening, beautiful, but not too bright and a little vulgar. Nabokov delights in exploring the intercourse between these cultures, and the passages where Humbert describes the suburbs and strip malls and motels of postwar America are filled with both attraction and repulsion, "those restaurants where the holy spirit of Huncan Dines had descended upon the cute paper napkins and cottage-cheese-crested salads." Yet however tempting the novel's symbolism may be, its chief delight--and power--lies in the character of Humbert Humbert. He, at least as he tells it, is no seedy skulker, no twisted destroyer of innocence. Instead, Nabokov's celebrated mouthpiece is erudite and witty, even at his most depraved. Humbert can't help it--linguistic jouissance is as important to him as the satisfaction of his arrested libido.

Handbook of Milk of Non-Bovine Mammals

Handbook of Milk of Non-Bovine Mammals
Young W. Park,George F.W. Haenlein | 2006-01-30 00:00:00 | Wiley-Blackwell | 449 | Animal Husbandry
No one can deny the fact that the cow is the primary dairy animal species to provide humans with nutritious dairy foods through its abundance of lacteal secretion. The goat or other minor dairy species will never be able to compete with the cow in terms of the volume of milk production. Yet, the contribution of milks from other secondary domesticated dairy species to the survival and well-being of mankind around the world is immense and invaluable. Testament to the importance of non-bovine milk is that more people drink the milk of goats than that of any other single species in the world.

In developing and under-developed counties, the secondary dairy species play a crucial role in supplying the food and nutritional needs of the people in those regions. Due to the unavailability of cow milk and the low consumption of meat, the milks of minor species such as goat, buffalo, sheep, and camel are critical daily food sources of protein, phosphate and calcium. Furthermore, because of important and inherent hypoallergenic properties, milks of certain species such as goat milk have been recommended as substitutes in diets for those with cow milk allergies.

Editors Park and Haenlein have assembled dairy and nutrition experts from around the world to contribute to the Handbook of Milk of Non-Bovine Mammals. Secondary dairy species addressed are the goat, sheep, buffalo, mare, camel, yak, deer (reindeer), sow, llama, alpaca, moose, musk ox, caribou, ass, elk, pinniped, polar bear and human. The book comprehensively covers the most important aspects of milk production including: trends and methods of raw milk production in different regions; compositional, nutritional, therapeutic, physico-chemical, and microbiological characteristics of the milks; processing technology; and types, distribution and consumption of the manufactured products from minor species milks. Of special note is coverage comparing specific human health attributes of milk from the various species, including nutritional, allergenic, immunological, and cultural factors. Because secondary dairy species have such a significant impact on human well-being and survival in many parts of the world, the Handbook of Milk of Non-Bovine Mammals is an essential reference book of leading-edge information for dairy scientists, nutritionists, food chemists, allergy specialists, health professionals, and allied professionals.
Reviews
Think milk and you usually think 'cow', but the contribution of milks from secondary domesticated dairy species around the world is growing, and HANDBOOK OF MILK OF NON-BOVINE MAMMALS is the only authoritative, in-depth title to assemble dairy and nutrition experts from around the world to consider the milks of not just goat and sheep, but camels, yaks, reindeer, llamas and more. Methods of raw milk production, changes in processing technologies, and distribution around the world pairs with health information to provide a significant reference essential for any agricultural collection.

The book is the one that I was looking for, however, the seller said it was like new with no marks. When I went through the book, there were underlined portions throughout and the pages were coming off the binding. I rated it 5 stars for the content itself as this is a great book for any who want to key out macrobenthics, but the seller needs to have a better description of their items.

I needed this book for my Invertebrate Field Zoology class in college. It has extensive keys, great pictures, and a ton of info. Arrived in great condition and in a timely manner, thanks!
Reviews
I used this as the textbook for my aquatic invertebrates class, and I loved it. The book has 23 chapters, each of which is devoted to a different phylum of invertebrates, as well as one chapter devoted to aquatic insect ecology. The chapters are all written by experts on the specific phylum, but every chapter follows the same basic outline. There are also many well-labeled diagrams. I wouldn't recommend this book if you just want a casual introduction to invertebrates, because it is written on a graduate-course level. But if you are taking college classes in invertebrates or aquatic biology of any sort, I highly recommend this book.
Reviews
The other reviewers' descriptions are correct: this is a valuable reference. I would like to like to clarify this a little however. The text is an important tool for taxonomists and ecologists working with aquatic macroinvertebrates. However, its emphasis is clearly on non-insects. If you need to identify insects-the most abundant aquatic macroinvertebrates, you should use Merritt and Cummins (1996) text: An introduction to the Aquatic Insects of North America. If you will be identifying samples for stream bioassessments you will need both of these books-and probably some others-as bench references.

To use these references to identify organisms, you will need access to a laboratory because you will need glassware, forceps, microscopes and other tools and chemicals. Sometimes a dissecting scope is required. Sometimes you will need to mount parts of organisms on microscope slides to view them on a compound scope at high magnification. If you represent a volunteer group and don't have access to (or experience with) this type of equipment, this book may not be for you. You might be better off with Resse Voshell's book: A Guide to Common Freshwater Invertebrates of North America. His text generally has family-level taxonomy based on characteristics observable in the field. Both books contain interesting ecological information in addition to taxonomic identification.

So yes, this book clearly deserves two "Thumbs Up" but you should consider your experience level, taxonomic need, and how you will use this book before you purchase it. I hope this helps you decide if the book is right for you. Feel free to email me with questions if necessary (brett@thebugguy.org). Best regards.
Reviews
The second edition of "Ecology and Classification of North American Freshwater Invertebrates" has provided aquatic biologists with a powerful tool. The study of freshwater organisms has gained in importance as we see our precious water resources become more scarce and polluted. As water flows downhill it takes with it every chemical and waste product we deposit on the surface. Fresh water (and marine) organisms are a first line of defense alerting us to the destruction. The presence or absence of many of these organisms is often significant in regard to water quality and environmental health.

In addition, there is increased interest in our freshwater systems and their biota, both among professionals and knowledgeable amateurs. The lack of funding and specialists in certain areas for the needed research in aquatic systems may make the role of the latter more important with time, as has already occurred in astronomy and to a lesser degree in other areas of study.

This book is a good summery of aquatic organisms from Protozoa to Arthropoda. Despite a few irritating typos, it compares well with earlier editions of Pennak's "Freshwater Invertebrates of the United States" in coverage (the 4th edition of Pennak drops both the protoctists and the insects, while retaining the non-insect arthropods and including some color illustrations). If one can afford them they are both worth having, but for reasonably up-to-date overall coverage and inclusiveness and at a cheaper price, Thorp and Covich (eds.) book is a good reference for all Canadian and U. S. freshwater invertebrates in the very broad sense.

Handbook of Self and Identity

Handbook of Self and Identity
Mark R. Leary Phd,June Price Tangney PhD | 2005-07-13 00:00:00 | The Guilford Press | 703 | Mental Health
The self has emerged as a central construct in many domains of behavioral and social science. This state-of-the-science volume brings together an array of leading authorities to comprehensively review theory and research in this burgeoning area. Coverage includes the content, structure, and organization of the self; processes related to agency, regulation, and self-control; self-evaluation and self-related motivation and emotion; interpersonal and cultural issues; and self-development across evolutionary time and the lifespan. Also examined are ways that the development of the self can go awry, resulting in emotional and behavioral problems.

Product Description
This first comprehensive overview of the rapidly growing field emphasizes the use of hydrogen bonding as a tool for organic synthesis, especially catalysis. As such, it covers such topics as enzyme chemistry, organocatalysis and total synthesis, all unified by the unique advantages of hydrogen bonding in the construction of complex molecules from simple precursors.
Providing everything you need to know, this is a definite must for every synthetic chemist in academia and industry.

From the Back Cover Snow and ice, water droplets, and all key materials of life –– the double strands of DNA and all proteins –– are held together by intermolecular forces called hydrogen bonds. These bonds, although weaker than bonds within molecules, are still strong enough to chaperone molecules into desired orientations, allowing chemists to use them as tools to perform reactions with high selectivity. In addition, hydrogen bonding can lead to metal–free catalysts, thus saving chemicals and energy in an otherwise lengthy purification process while also reducing the heavy metal output in the environment.
