This cutting-edge reference source provides the latest international findings useful to practitioners, researchers, and academicians involved in education, ontologies, open source communities, and trusted networks.

Table of Contents:

Section I: Patterns of User Experience for Collaboration

Chapter I: A Technology for Pattern-Based Process Design and its Application to Collaboration Engineering

This chapter describes how to build a tool for pattern based collaboration process design following the Collaboration Engineering approach and geared toward process managers designing collaboration processes for organizations. To support the design task, describes best practices or design patterns can be used as building blocks. It describes the requirements for a tool for pattern based collaboration process design, specifically for design efforts following the Collaboration Engineering approach.

Chapter II: Pattern-Based Tool Design for Shared Knowledge Construction

Dr. Lukosch describes how to design tools for collaborative knowledge management. For designing and developing successful tools, it is crucial to involve end-users in the development process and to create shared understanding of the requirements as well as the solutions among the end-users and developers. Describes typical problems encountered when developing tools for computer-mediated interaction and presents a pattern-based approach for supporting developers and integrating end-users in the development process.

Chapter III: Creative Waves: Exploring Emerging Online Cultures, Social Networking and Creative Collaboration through e-Learning to Offer Visual Campaigns for Local Kenyan Health Needs

This chapter describes a project for designing critical healthcare information in local communities in Africa. Design benefits from many levels of collaboration, especially when dealing with complex policy issues facing today’s world. This project shows the results that can be produced through careful facilitation among online collaborators. 100 graphic designers joined forces with a similar number of pharmacists from over 40 countries worldwide to produce graphic proposals for public awareness campaigns about six health issues seriously affecting the people of a village community in Kenya.

Chapter IV: Enhancing University Students’ Interaction and Learning Through Formative Peer-Assessment Online

This chapter presents a model for online education that suggests that online education may have advantages over traditional classroom settings. The program gives students the opportunity to share, interpret and discuss criteria in order to gain a deeper understanding of their tacit dimensions. It also shows what peer assessment in the form of peer review contributes to enhancing the students’ learning in online courses, and presents a design for a peer assessment element. It concludes by reporting some early findings from the project.

Chapter V: Preparing the Next Generation of Innovators through Collaboration

Offers insight into the types of collaborative experiences needed to spur innovation. Companies have realized that collaboration is a key competency for the global economy. This chapter discusses the steps the US is taking to ensure that its citizens remain innovative, how the business community is using collaboration to be competitive, and the issues encountered in education as schools attempt to teach innovation.

Chapter VI: Social Networking Sites (SNS) and the ‘Narcissistic Turn’: The Politics of Self-Exposure

The advent of the Internet hailed the ability of users to transform their identity and expression and articulation of the ‘self’ through their digital interactions. The Internet in its early days enabled the user to re-define identity through the text-based environment of the internet without declaring their offline persona or identity. In comparison new social software like Facebook have brought about a narcissistic turn where private details are placed on a global arena for public spectacle creating new ways of connecting and gazing into the lives of the others. It raises new social issues for societies including the rise of identity fraud, infringement of privacy, the seeking of private pleasures through public spectacle as well as the validation of one’s identity through peer recognition and consumption.

Section II: Interactive Tools for Collaboration

Chapter VII: Wikis for Collaboration & Knowledge Management: Current Practices & Future Directions

Dr. Kussmaul examines how collaboration and knowledge management (KM) can be supported using Wikis and related tools. Describes what Wikis are and how they can be used to support collaboration and KM. Describes various approaches and factors. Systems should be off-the-shelf, avoid “either-or” conflicts, and provide structures to facilitate common tasks. Identifies best practices grouped into categories. The chapter also discusses future directions and implications in these rapidly changing areas.

Chapter VIII: Maximizing Collaboration Using Topic Maps-Based Ontology

This chapter shows how the information glut compounded by many collaborative systems can be managed by using the topics the systems generate. This chapter discusses limitations of current information organization approaches and how to incorporate ontology into information organizations, thus enhancing collaboration possibilities. This chapter compares the two ontology languages, RDF and Topic Maps, addresses the selection guidelines between the two ontology languages, and presents user performance using a Topic Maps-based ontology.

Chapter IX: Collaborative Retrieval Systems: Reusable Information Quests

Dr. Sun presents a new take on the critical search functionality. Collaborative search generally uses previous search information to assist in future searches. However, users with the same expressed query topic may need different information. This chapter proposes to enrich the context of query representation to incorporate non-topical properties of user information needs, which appears to improve the results of collaborative search.

Chapter X: Automatically Evaluating the Quality of Contents Created in Collaborative Knowledge Building

Dr. Ng describes a system for determining quality Wiki content using stepwise discriminative analysis and machine learning. Wikis make collaborative knowledge building easy. Since any registered member can change the content of a Wiki page, quality control becomes an issue. This paper reports a pilot study of factors that can enhance the quality of contents built by open collaborative knowledge building. Using stepwise discriminant analysis and logistic regression, several variables were identified that could contribute positively to the identification of high-quality Wiki pages. The result was analyzed using Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves from signal detection theory. The predictor worked well, with a high detection rate and a low false-alarm rate. This finding can help programmers and architects of open collaborative knowledge building systems to design and implement mechanism

A Modern History of Hong Kong

A Modern History of Hong Kong
Steve Tsang | 2004-05-14 00:00:00 | I. B. Tauris | 356 | China
From a little-known fishing community at the periphery of China, Hong Kong developed into one of the world's most spectacular and cosmopolitan cities after a century and a half of British imperial rule. The history of Hong Kong, from its occupation by the British in 1841 to its return to Chinese sovereignty in 1997, is a fascinating story of East meeting West. This book addresses the changing relations between the local Chinese and expatriate communities in 156 years of British rule, and the emergence of a local identity. It explains the importance of China as a factor in its development and the origins of the so-called "1997 problems," thus analyzing the underlying reasons for the rise of a liberal society committed to the rule of law without democracy.

Reviews
As we travel, I like to read the history of a country or area before we go there. I find that it is difficult to find a factual history that is easy to read, let alone enjoyable.

Tsang has a writing style that makes history interesting. He discusses the roles of Chinese government, the British government and the Chinese who immigrate to Hong Kong. He also has a very good understanding of the role of government and the economic forces at work.

He is very objective and does not have an "agenda".

I feel that this book has given me a very accurate description of the history of Hong Kong and will make our trip to Hong Kong, on which we leave in three days, much more enjoyable.
Reviews
This history is well balanced, thoroughly researched and very readable. It covers the period from the Opium Wars when the British obtained the rocky island referred to as "fragrant harbour" (Hong Kong) to the handover of one of the world's preeminent trading and financial centres to the PRC. The strength of the text is that it makes very clear that Hong Kong's existence was a function of the relative power of China and Britain. As China disintegrated in the 19th Century and European powers took little pieces for themselves, Britain was the leading European in the area, and (after serving itself) even sought to protect China against its European competitors. When the costs of World War II and the Japanese Empire broke the back of Europe's colonies in Asia, a new chapter began in Hong Kong as well. Prof. Tsang shows a Hong Kong that somewhat resembles the United States in that it is a refuge for immigrants from troubled foreign countries, although in the case of Hong Kong almost everyone came from China. Tsang does not shy away from depicting the racist and elitist practices of Victorian England towards the Chinese refugees who made up Hong Kong's population, but stresses that what the colonial masters had to offer (particularly the rule of law and civil service) was much better than what these people could expect from their Chinese homeland. This portrait of the people of Hong Kong is extremely sympathetic, even endearing. They appear as enterprising refugees who had no real power to defend themselves against either Imperial Britain or Communist China except making Hong Kong such a special (and wealthy) place that the power current overshadowing them would look favorably to giving them space to breathe. This is not only a captivating and informative history, but also an excellent study of colonies generally and culture: it shows how and the extent to which a Western economy and society can develop in a culture that remains completely Chinese.
Reviews
This is by far the best book on Hong Kong I have ever read. It is clearly written, balanced, and insightful. My family and I have lived in Hong Kong for years and it is nice to read a book that describes a place one knows well in beautifully written prose. It is fair about both the British and the local Chinese communities. When I read the chapter on the rise of a Hong Kong identity I know this is really good. It rings true. Most highly recommended.
Reviews
A Modern History of Hong Kong presents a supremely well-balanced history of this former British imperial possession. Steve Tsang's meticulously researched historical narrative duly recognizes the efforts of both Hong Kong's industrious and civic-minded local Chinese population and the expatriate British who held the bulk of the administrative power over Hong Kong during its tenure as a crown colony. Tsang's work demonstrates that Hong Kong's ethnic Chinese inhabitants played an essential and dynamic role in the creation of the former colony in that they constituted its economic, industrial, and infrastructural workforce from the beginning, and came to develop their own unique Hong Kong identity as the population stabilized culturally but exploded in number in the decades following the Second World War. Tsang's historical account never strays far from what students of Marxist theory would likely refer to as Hong Kong's material conditions, in that the book portrays Hong Kong's cultural development within the context of its economic and political circumstances. The work puts forth a history of Hong Kong in which the colony's unique social and cultural characteristics were established as a result of the relatively minimalist legal and political framework that was provided by the British colonizers in order to ensure Hong Kong's capitalistic success. Students of history, English, postcolonial studies, comparative literature, and other academic disciplines will find this book to be a fascinating primer for further studies into both Hong Kong's history and the colonial and postcolonial initiatives of Britain and other Eurasian countries. General readers and academics alike who are interested in Hong Kong's history will find Steve Tsang's book to be a lively, entertaining, and fair treatment of the forces and events that led to the formation of this former colony and to the creation of its current identity as a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China.

Tasks in Primary Mathematics Teacher Education: Purpose, Use and Exemplars

Tasks in Primary Mathematics Teacher Education: Purpose, Use and Exemplars
- | 2008-01-01 00:00:00 | Springer; 1 edition | 270 | Education
Tasks in Primary Mathematics Teacher Education is intended to advance relevant research and innovative international practices in the preparation and professional development of mathematics teachers. Emerging from discussion at the ICMI study on teacher professional development, this volume, focused on primary and elementary teachers, culls a richness that can only be found by gathering wisdom from varied experiences around the world.

The choice of tasks, and the associated pedagogies, is a key aspect of teaching and learning mathematics. Arguing that what students learn is largely defined by the tasks they are given, several major themes are presented. One such major strand, the form, function and focus of tasks, is discussed throughout several chapters, offering analysis, discussion of implementation, and exemplars of a broader category of illustrative techniques for developing critical understanding.

Reviews
Learning Spanish Like Crazy is the best language audio CD set on the market. I own most of the other high-quality language learning systems: books, audio, and software. I studied Spanish for years in school and found occasions to speak it regularly in my communities, growing up in NY and living in TX and CA.

I speak Spanish reasonably well now. Whenever I travel to a Spanish-speaking country on vacation or business, I still spend a few weeks reviewing my Pimsleur and LSLC CDs to brush up, listening as I commute to work.

Patrick Jackson's method stands on the shoulders of the Pimsleur method. He has crafted a language training series that is modern, lively, and fun to use. The conversational method pioneered by Pimsleur is a much more entertaining and effective method than the rote drill methods used in systems like the Foreign Service Institute (FSI).

Even if you are proficient in basic conversation, you will find the first level series useful. The early lessons are basic, but the later lessons in this level ramp up quickly, mixing tenses and vocabulary in a mode similar to natural conversation. Like the Pimsleur method, which scientifically measures the human ability to remember, language patterns and vocabulary are constantly reinforced throughout the course. You don't forget what you learned in the beginning of the course. You use the skills and vocabulary throughout the course.

I was a little wary of the cartoon cover art and marketing style of the website. Given the expense of the series, I was concerned about quality, but the reviews and endorsements sounded credible. LSLC offers a money-back guarantee, personally guaranteed by Patrick Jackson in my correspondence with him. When I discovered a defective CD in my pack, he replaced the entire set immediately.

If you choose to get on the email list, you will receive regular bonus packs of interesting language resources and entertaining, highly informative letters from Patrick as he travels abroad, featuring subtle aspects of the Spanish language, particularly as it is spoken in Central and South America.

I own level one and two. I wish LSLC would produce a level three. The current, two LSLC levels span all the concepts and material in the three-level Pimsleur set, so you get very good value purchasing LSLC.

I found the LSLC series to be qualitatively better than the Pimsleur series, which is getting a bit out-of-date. LSLC is more systematic and thorough than Pimsleur in presenting concepts and reinforcing learning.

LSLC is particularly strong in teaching verb tenses and building proficiency in using mixed verb tenses in conversation. The lessons on subjunctive tenses are the best I have found in any language learning system of this type. Those lessons were very helpful to me in developing more proficiency in using this subtle aspect of the Spanish language.

Reviews
This is an excellent spanish course that will help you be more fluent. Not truly FLUENT, but further along the path to fluency. I didn't buy Level 2 when it first came out because the publisher (Patrick Jackson) did such a sleazy opening sales pitch that I was turned off. So when I saw this for sale at the local flea market (bootleg copy) for 10 bucks, I snapped it up. You can save money by buying the course on the Learning Spanish Like Crazy website, but, of course, you have to download the files.
Reviews
I though level one (Lessons 1 through 30) was great. Level two continues the original format, with the addition of new verb tenses and vocabulary. If you liked level one, get level two. Obviously, work with level one first.

I was unclear on the availability of transcripts, but they are available online, and the instructions are clear.
Reviews
I liked Level I, and now own Level II. I felt like I should review this because as others have observed there are obviously a lot of fake reviews touting the amazing things it will do. The fact is, this product has HUGELY helped my spanish fluency. I went through Pimsleur from the local library, and that is a great program as well. I will probably do Rosetta Stone after. I have done level 1 and am finishing level 2 and also went through Barrons' Learning Medical Spanish program. This is great on verb tenses. It is a bit, but not overly predictable. Pimsleur has more inherent review, so the stuff you learn is maybe better stuck in your head. However, that can be overcome by listening to the CDs more times. Pimsleur I went through once, these CDs I listen to three times a piece (as the difficulty has increased) and then review later. The amount of material in this far exceeds Pimsleur, and I have learned lots of verb tenses and structures. I can now speak and be understood fairly well. I have seen claims that you will be fluent and understand rapid speaking natives, and while this definitely gets you closer, I don't know when I will be able to understand rapid speakers (even with listening to TV for practice)... I think that just takes time. Fluency just takes practice and time. So, it's a great product, but its not going to make you beautiful, intelligent, or anything else magical despite some of its claims. I did email the company and they are coming out with a Level III this fall, and I plan to get that as well. The only thing that would stop me would be if I already have much of it-- the free lesson they give with Level One is the first lesson of level II, and this one has a bunch of bonus lessons (A-H I think) which I haven't reached yet. Anyway, definitely a good pick for someone who is motivated and has time and money to invest in learning Spanish!

Later: I am updating this review, just to say I have decided not to do Rosetta Stone. I am sure it is a fine product... but I don't feel I need to spend the money on it with where I am at now. I am working my way through the LSLC FSI Programmatic Spanish programs which are an awesome addition to this, if somewhat painful. I have learned a lot through iTunes Latino (and I am sure you could find Spanish mp3's here on amazon too)... get the songs, find a translation on line or translate it myself, and listen to it when I run. Kudos to Learning Spanish Like Crazy for providing a great program!
Reviews
This Spanish program has interesting dialogues that force you to think and remember, rather that just repeat. Learning happens better when you're actually figuring things out. Because the CDs give you an opportunity to hear Spanish at the real pace and then breaks it down to parts, it trains your ear to be able to pick up what native speakers are saying.

Sun Protection in Man (Comprehensive Series in Photosciences)

Sun Protection in Man (Comprehensive Series in Photosciences)
P.U. Giacomoni | 2001-08-14 00:00:00 | Elsevier Science | 780 | Internal Medicine
"Sun Protection in Man" looks at the beneficial and harmful effects of solar radiation. The physiological consequences of sun exposure have been systematically studied starting at the end of the nineteenth century and we now have accumulated knowledge about how Caucasian and Asian skins reacts to solar radiation. The chemical effects of solar ultraviolet radiation have been analyzed with particular emphasis during the second half of the twentieth century. Research on micro-organisms has allowed us to understand the mechanisms of UV-induced mutagenesis and photosensitization. Studies with laboratory rodents have opened the path to the understanding of UV-induced immune-depression, carcinogenesis, photo-damage and photo-aging. The results of these studies have enabled other scientists to investigate the same phenomena in human organs such as the skin and the eye. UV radiation damages hair, as well. The present knowledge in these fields is summarized in some of the chapters of this monograph.

Mass phenomenon in Europe with the generalization of summer vacations which were a consequence of social reforms introducing the concept of "paid vacations". This created a need for protection and opened a market for sunscreens.

This monograph is concerned with sun protection as a whole and is not just "another book on sunscreens". Nonetheless, in these days of general concern, it is important to learn about the efficiency of sunscreens. Several authors discuss how to reduce the number of impinging photons and explain why sunscreens seem to offer less protection than expected. Guidelines are given on how to use sunscreens in everyday life, which are expressed rigorously though clearly, for access to the common reader.

Our knowledge on the relationship between sun and humans is at the early stages of development. Industrial and commercial activities are concerned by the development of this knowledge, and rules have been and will be promulgated to guarantee efficacy and safety of sun-products. It is hoped that this monograph will be of interest to the scholar, the layman and the legislator.

The Spook's Battle: Wardstone Chronicles: Book 04

The Spook's Battle: Wardstone Chronicles: Book 04
Joseph Delaney | 2008-01-01 00:00:00 | Red Fox | 504 | Fiction Other
The author has a wonderful voice as Tom, the 13-year-old Spook in training. Tom is definitely an apprentice who is still learning his craft and making the mistakes, but he is learning. I do like that his character, and all the relationships, grows and changes with each book. Father Stocks is also interesting in that he had been an apprentice but felt he could do more as a priest.

For those with children, this book is one that would be excellent to read and discuss together. There are lessons that can be taken from the story. It is a series that should be read in order. While this fourth book in the series is complete in itself, it also segues to the next book. It's on my shelf waiting to be read.

Malonyl-Coenzyme A Decarboxylase Deficiency - A Bibliography and Dictionary for Physicians, Patients, and Genome Researchers
Philip M. Parker | 2007-07-18 00:00:00 | ICON Group International, Inc | 98 | Programming
In March 2001, the National Institutes of Health issued the following warning: "The number of Web sites offering health-related resources grows every day. Many sites provide valuable information, while others may have information that is unreliable or misleading." Furthermore, because of the rapid increase in Internet-based information, many hours can be wasted searching, selecting, and printing. Since only the smallest fraction of information dealing with Malonyl-coenzyme A decarboxylase deficiency is indexed in search engines, such as www.google.com or others, a non-systematic approach to Internet research can be not only time consuming, but also incomplete. This book was created for medical professionals, students, and members of the general public who want to conduct medical research using the most advanced tools available and spending the least amount of time doing so.

On Desire: Why We Want What We Want

On Desire: Why We Want What We Want
William B. Irvine | 2007-06-18 00:00:00 | | 0 | Philosophy
How rare is it to read a book that is at once intellectually provocative truly original, accessibly and gracefully written, and relevant to everyday life? In "On Desire," William Irvine has done all of that and more. An academic philosopher by training, he's had the courage to write a book about how to live-- something most philosophers wouldn't think of doing. Irvine's subject is the primary impulse that drives and bedevils nearly all of us throughout our lives. We don't spend a lot of time thinking about desire (largely because we're too busy feeling captive to it) but Irvine has looked at it from multiple angles including science, religion, and philosophy,. If unmet desire is a leitmotif in your life (and in whose isn't it?), this book will give you a whole new way of looking at how to tame your impulsive passions without retiring to a cave or renouncing life's pleasures altogether.

Special Edition Using Asp.Net (Special Edition Using)

Special Edition Using Asp.Net (Special Edition Using)
| 2002-03-05 00:00:00 | | 0 | ASP.NET

This book introduces the reader to ASP.NET. Though ASP has been used for years in Web development, the new version provides users with better and faster operability. Because an ASP guru has written this book the information will be immediately applicable. Special Edition Using ASP.NET also serves as a comprehensive reference to both experienced and new developers. This book outshines any competing titles by providing real-world examples and troubleshooting with tips on how to integrate the technology with the other programs of Visual Studio.NET and content developed in previous versions of ASP.

User review
Confusing, full of mistakes and badly explained
This has to be the worst computer book I have ever read. It is very confusing, badly explained and full of mistakes.

It starts off with an overview of the .NET architecture which is totally meaningless. Nothing is explained, jargon is thrown about without clarification and there are some obscure diagrams which are not explained and don't mean anything.

The book is supposedly aimed at Classic ASP programmers (amongst others), yet spends a very dull chapter giving an overview of ASP.NET, without bothering to point out that almost everything explained is EXACTLY the same as Classic ASP.

The chapters on controls are really badly explained. He doesn't bother telling you what's going on, just gives some code (which is as full of mistakes as the text) and doesn't explain most of it. He throws in new controls and code without saying why or what it does.

Most of the text is self-contradictory and confusing. It swings from stunningly basic explanations of simple concepts to complex ideas that just aren't clarified. You are elft in total confusion.

The book is supposed to have a companion web site, but it doesn't exist.

In short, this book is not worth receiving as a present, never mind paying good money for. Given the normally high standards of Que's books, I can't imagine how they allowed this one to be published, especially with so many errors in it.

Don't buy it. Don't even steal it, it's that bad.

User review
Significant shortfalls, proofreader should be fired
I would mirror the concerns of many reviewers above. Code samples contain frequent errors, including this gem:

void page_load(Object Sender, EventArgs e)
{
Dim myDataSet as DataSet;

,,. switching between language mid code-segment is obviously incorrect - and demonstrates to me that the author hasn't bothered to test the code he's written. This suspicion is further evidenced by his habit of leaving out crucial lines such as includes in other code segments.

Add this to his amusingly frustrating behaviour of referring to important concepts in an introduction to a section then never elaborating, I can't help but think this entire book is some sick joke written out of some sort of psychosis he developed as a child.

It says in the introduction the author lectures - I pity his students.

User review
A great book to learn ASP.NET (beta edition)
That this book was written in beta is very unfortunate indeed. That it has gone this long without an update is tragic. And that the publisher will not accept a trade-up for a more recent book is downright dirty.

The book is not worth its price. There is no CD and the book is laden with beta code that often times does not give the beginner the slightest hint as to what to try to make it work.

Yet this piece of work has its qualities. Not able to get anything to work past page 150, I put the book down and began reading two other books on .NET. At a certain point, the .NET light clicked on in my head. And now, a year later, I've returned to this book to find many valuable gems that my other books never mention.

This book is best suited for the intermediate .NET programmer, who has grasped the major differing concepts between ASP classic and .NET. Until then, the book is a jumble of listings that seem like you'd never use them. I've found this book to be a helpful (albeit inaccurate) resource when I need to quickly acquaint myself with a new object or class (the only reason I give it TWO stars instead of ONE)

If you're a beginner to .NET (or programming) I highly recommend `ASP.NET for Web Designers` by Peter Ladka.

User review
The Other Reviewers are Lying to You
The book has no coherent structure. He never relates the abstract information to a practical application or to specific examples of code.

If you don't have a background in programming, you're not going to be able to make sense of what he's trying to get at when he talks about programming languages. This is a pattern indicative of the entire book. If you don't have a background in what he's taking about, you won't understand him, but if you do have a background in what he's talking about, you don't need the book. Classic catch 22.

The examples include 99.5% of the code needed to work, and the author assumes you can figure out the remaining 0.5%. If you can't, the entire example won't work.

This is by no means a reference book on any kind. So often when reading through the book, the author will say that x, y, and z are the most common features/attributes, leaving me scrambling for information on all the features/attributes he left out, which happen to be the ones I need to use.

I don't know why I'm getting such a radically different opinion from the other reviews, but I certainly did not link this book.

Understandable
This book understandable unlike another book I have on ASP.NET. I don't know why, but authors love to show you their programming prowess at the expense of the material. Leinecker doesn't fall into that trap, but delivers unencumbered content that's understandable.

Object-Oriented Programming in Common Lisp: A Programmer's Guide to CLOS

Object-Oriented Programming in Common Lisp: A Programmer's Guide to CLOS
| 1989-01-01 00:00:00 | | 0 | Programming

User review
THE book on object-oriented programming in Common Lisp
Sonya Keene is one of the very best technical writers in the entire computer industry, and she was one of the inner circle of experts who designed and standardized the Common Lisp Object System. This book is crystal clear, accurate, and comprehensive.

User review
Really great book on CLOS
This is a great book. It shows everything about CLOS (except the metaobject protocol, which is just mentioned but not explained in detail). The explanations are very clear and the author does every possible thing to make you understand all details (a bit too much for me, but that's a matter of taste).

For anyone interested in OO programming in Common Lisp, this is an essential book.

Even if you are interested in OO programming in general, this book covers a different approach, so it is nice for a comparison (in CLOS, methods do not belong to classes, and there are lots of interesting tricks that you can do that are not possible in other languages).

User review
Concise, clear and readable, an excellent introduction
Lisp is kinda hot again, Perl 6 will have multiple dispatch, Ruby's getting before and after methods, and Aspect Oriented Programming is still bubbling under in Java, so what better time to revisit the Common Lisp Object System and this slim volume from 1989? Unsurprisingly, objects in Lisp are implemented differently to the well-known object systems, even Smalltalk, so if you're into OO (and in particular AOP), check out CLOS.

And this book is an excellent way to get acquainted with the features of CLOS. While the introduction suggests non-Lispniks can benefit from reading this book, I would strongly suggest you can read Lisp to make sure you understand what's going on. It's a quick read (about 220 pages, excluding the appendices), the language is unfussy and clear, and the concepts are simply explained.

The hoary old shape example is used briefly (perhaps it wasn't as tired in 1989), but the two main examples used in the book is a simple locking mechanism for concurrency, and multiple inheritance based disk and tape stream classes. Both example do the job well of highlighting the unique flavour of CLOS. The metaobject protocol is touched upon only briefly, but there's more than enough of the standard object protocol described for you to be getting your money's worth.

Other introductory books do cover CLOS (Practical Common Lisp has a good chapter), but this is a very nice standalone volume devoted to CLOS only. Well worth reading, object (and Lisp) fans.

User review
A good way to understand `why CLOS?`
This is a nice `tutorial style` walk through much of the functionality of CLOS.

It doesn't get into examples that are of _spectacular_ complexity, either in size or in difficulty of concept, but that strikes me as being just fine. The dialect of CLOS in use predates the final version that was released, so a few examples require a little modification to work with modern Lisp releases.

If you're looking to get into the sophistication of redefining your own metaobject protocols, the MOP book is surely more suitable. But for most of us who just need to figure out what CLOS is good for, this book provides a very nice presentation of that.

User review
The cover says it all
You are going to get precisely what is advertised: a good guide to object-oriented programming in Common Lisp, no less, no more.

Harvested Forages

Harvested Forages
Rodney Dwain Horrocks,John F. Valentine | 1999-06-16 00:00:00 | Academic Press | 426 | Social Sciences
Harvested Forages deals with the subject of food for domestic animal feeding. Such food is called "forage" and includes things like alfalfa and other plants usually referred to as "hay." Topics include the ways that this forage is produced, how it is harvested, and ways that it should be stored. Other issues that are dealt with include various criteria and measurement procedures for assessing forage nutritive quality, potential health hazards associated with particular plants and plant toxins, and various issues of plant growth, pest control, and soil fertility--among other topics. This book is essential for any institution with a strong program in range sciences, animal sciences, animal feeding and nutrition, and related programs.

Key Features
* Synthesizes and summarizes a vast and widely dispersed literature in animal science
* Serves as a reference for managers of harvested forages as well as all those involved with the forage production industry
Reviews
This is by far the best book I've seen on the matter of haymaking. Anyone who's looking to get into the hay business needs this book. I bought this along with Forages Volume 1 and 2 and it's helped me plan my hay business perfectly. As an accountant I especially appreciate all of the numbers provided on man hours and dollar costing on certain equipment. Overall great book! I had to track this down for a while and it was expensive but so worth it.

Network Management, MIBs and MPLS: Principles, Design and Implementation

Network Management, MIBs and MPLS: Principles, Design and Implementation
| 2003-06-20 00:00:00 | | 0 | Networks

Given the financial strain that most companies find themselves under today, it is crucial to be able to manage large, complex networks in an efficient and cost-effective manner. This book focuses on the components of network management system technology. Morris focuses on the use of MIBS (management information bases), which monitor network management devices across an entire network remotely and gather stats from these devices in order to make informed decisions regarding network traffic management and application deployment. The book goes on to discuss both enterprise and service provider networks and their associated management problems. Networks are growing rapidly and carrying both more traffic and different types of real time/non-real time traffic. Network devices are also becoming increasingly complex, providing support for millions of managed objects such as virtual connections. Scalability is probably the biggest single problem facing network managers. Various methods of tackling scalability issues are discussed including pushing more management intelligence into network devices. The author illustrates proposed solutions in practical examples written in Visual C++ and Java.

User review
Great Tie-in of MPLS with Network Management
Mr. Morris has done a great job of taking network management concepts and burrowing down into the details of how it all actually works. He lifts the haze of confusion that often surrounds MIBs and their implementation in NMS applications, and then ties in one of the hot new network technologies, MPLS, so that one can see how network management actually works with this and other IP-based protocols. Good job!

User review
Good but not the best
Its a good book overall but there was lot of topics this book fails to cover.

Pros.
* Explaining standard MPLS mibs.
* Lot of material good for beginner
* SNMP code
* Sample buildout of a simple MPLS network
* Only chapter that is useful is Chapter 8 and a bit in 9.

Cons.
* Explaining standard MIBs just on the froth, no in depth analyis or things like relationships between MIB values in different tables.
* Only few chapters useful for a person already in OSS domain.
* SNMP code again is for beginners and they are a big eyewash.
* The book has been stretched out to write 300 odd pages. Not worth the cost.
* Chapters 5,6,7 were not useful.

I recomend this book for absolute novices in this area. And to others the book is not worth the money you will pay for.

BTW. MPLS Network management from Thomas Nadeau is a lot better.

User review
Valuable Resource
The book does a great job of illustrating the basics of the components and challenges that encompass Network Management using the emerging MPLS technology as a practical example. A pleasant read for those new to Network Management & MPLS as well as the more seasoned veterans. I found the book very easy to read and the order of the material and presentation of examples tied together the concepts very well.
