The Art of Shen Ku: The First Intergalactic Artform of the Entire Universe

The Art of Shen Ku: The First Intergalactic Artform of the Entire Universe
Zeek | 2001-09-01 00:00:00 | Perigee Trade | 336 | Authors
What is Shen Ku? Roughly translated: "Pure Traveler" or "Phantom Passenger." What exactly is the "art of...?" Mastering the skill and knowledge of practically everything anyone comes across while on Earth, including:

* Tying knots and enhancing sex * Numerology and self hypnosis * Herbal therapy and forecasting weather * Curing nosebleeds and removing stains * Kung fu and magic tricks * Isometric and breathing exercises of monks * Self defense and catching fish

And this is only the beginning.

Irreverent and quirky, serious and 100% straightforward, The Art of Shen Ku explores hundreds of topics from a broad spectrum of life situations, and gives ingeniously simple advice on how to cope with them, overcome them, use them, and benefit from them.

"One amazing book...intensely practical. Offering awesome crash courses in everything from joke telling to acupuncture...if you are a traveler in life, this book is for you. If you have anybody who needs an awe-inspiring present, then this book is for you. In short, buy it!" (The Travel and Leisure Magazine)
Reviews
I got introduced to this book by a girlfriend's husband who was glued to the pages the entire weekend they were visiting. My own husband finally snatched it away from him, only to instantly become totally absorbed in it himself. Our friends had to pry it out of his hands when they left. I subsequently bought him and my two brothers each a copy of it and they haven't put it down yet! Curious now, I've even started reading it myself and find it one of the handiest reference books for travellers I've ever seen.
Reviews
It's the type of book you can open at any random page and find the read to be fun, and informative. Not dull!
Reviews
I have a few "Survival Guides", not because I'm an explorer or outdoorsman, I just think they're interesting. I picked this one up for the content, not the art. Although the art is impressive, I found the information in "The Art Of Shen Ku" a little to New Age for my tastes. Lots of things I really wanted to dig deeper into are barely mentioned and other stuff I have no interest in were covered in detail over several pages. I personally don't believe in the holistic and other herbal solutions to life's problems, but apparently Zeek does. Sorry, I know 95% of the reviews are glowing and 5 stars, but I just didn't find it that interesting or helpful.
Reviews
Everyone has said what needs to be said.

This book is a completely, utterly random accumulation of techniques, words of advise, folk practices, techniques, etc. that you can use.

The drawings are incredibly good, it's so fun to flip through, and it provides actual information to use.

Just get it, and get one for each of your friends.
Reviews
I bought this book after leafing through it in the book store. Seemed interesting. Got it home and opened it a few times, read some stuff then put it down. I reopened it today and found it has some useful information - a lot of it but how much of it will I ever need. I am not a traveler so all I can say is - I wish I still had my [...] bucks instead of the book. Bottom line a lot of time went into the book and if you are into holistic stuff you may find it to be very helpful. Me, I'm on the fence with the holistic approach - nothing has ever worked for me but I know people who have had success.

Reviews
I purchased this for my husband who said it had good basic information. He said he WOULD recommend it.
Reviews
After reading through this book I found that I liked it not only for an exam guide but also as a source of quick answers to miscellaneous small questions. For example, I had a minor problem where I knew what the problem was and what had to be done, but could not remember the specific utility or specific steps needed. A quick turn to the appropriate section of the book and I had my answer. This is not a book that you would use to try to learn Linux and it does not profess to be such a book. On the other hand if you have a familiarity with Red Hat Linux and want a refresher, or a short summary of the most common administrative tasks this is an excellent book. If I were to take a good Linux book and write an outline so that I could just jump to the answers when I had questions this is the kind of book that I would end up with. "Red Hat Certified Engineer Exam Notes" is a highly recommended read for anyone wanting a summary of Red Hat Linux in a well-organized format.
Reviews
A great cram book. Short and to the point. Highly recommend reading it just before going to course to get an overview.

If you dont plan on going to course, read it BEFORE starting your
studies from the bigger Study Guide for a good overview. (I recommend "RHCE Red Hat Certified Engineer Linux Study Guide, Third Edition" by Michael Jang) Published by McGraw-Hill.

Happy Studying!

Good luck with your exam.

Nonholonomic Mechanics and Control

Nonholonomic Mechanics and Control
Anthony Bloch | 2003-04-08 00:00:00 | Springer | 504 | Engineering
The goal of this book is to explore some of the connections between control theory and geometric mechanics; that is, control theory is linked with a geometric view of classical mechanics in both its Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations and in particular with the theory of mechanical systems subject to motion constraints. The synthesis of topics is appropriate as there is a particularly rich connection between mechanics and nonlinear control theory. The aim is to provide a unified treatment of nonlinear control theory and constrained mechanical systems that incorporates material that has not yet made its way into texts and monographs. This book is intended for graduate students who wish to learn this subject and researchers in the area who want to enhance their techniques.

Fraction Concepts Book 1 (Key to Fractions)

Fraction Concepts Book 1 (Key to Fractions)
Steven Rasmussen | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | Key Curriculum Press | 37 | Math
Key to Fractions covers all topics from basic concepts to mixed numbers and is written with secondary students in mind. Minimal reading is required, so students can easily work independently or in small groups. Student workbook for Key to Fractions, Book 1, covers Fraction Concepts. Pages: 37, PaperbackPublisher: Key Curriculum PressISBN: 0-913684-91-0
Reviews
These workbooks are fantastic. My 5th grade students like them because they make sense, and because they can go at their own pace. I tutor a small group of struggling students after school, today was the first time I was left with nothing to do. I gave them the Key to Fractions books and they really didn't need much help. I like that they build student confidence by beginning with very simple concepts. Students start out shading benchmark fractions, and very quickly move towards difficult operations.
Reviews
Systimatical, easy good course. The only disadvantage: no challenge.
Reviews
This series by Key Curriculum Press is an excellent way to strengthen your child's (or anyone's) math skills. The worktexts are printed on newsprint-paper to save money and resources. Each page covers one concept only, with an introduction and one or more pages of practice to anchor the concept in the student's mind. Each concept builds on the previous one, and each book builds on the previous one, developing mastery incrementally. Students work at their own pace, a page at a time, or three... or eight! This is math the way it should be... clear, easy to use, comprehensive. I give Mr. Rasmussen 5 stars!

Time-Frequency Transforms for Radar Imaging and Signal Analysis

Time-Frequency Transforms for Radar Imaging and Signal Analysis
Victor C. Chen,Hao Ling,Victor C. Chen,Hao Ling | 2002-01-01 00:00:00 | Artech Print on Demand | 234 | Engineering
This text is a hands-on guide to time-frequency transforms for radar imaging and signal analysis. It explores more efficient ways to: extract dispersive scattering features; detect and extract weak signals in noise; form clear radar images; estimate parameters and perform motion compensation; detect and track moving targets in the synthetic aperture radar; and analyze vibration and rotation induced micro-Doppler. This resource introduces an image formation algorithm based on time-frequency-transforms, showing its advantage over the more conventional Fourier-based image formation. Referenced with over 170 equations and 80 illustrations, the book presents algorithms that help improve the result of radar imaging and signal processing. Moreover, the authors discuss future trends in time-frequency to analyze micro-Doppler, and provide a newly developed time-frequency approach to radar signal and image processing to help solve problems associated with conventional approaches.

Male Femaling: A grounded theory approach to cross-dressing and sex-changing

Male Femaling: A grounded theory approach to cross-dressing and sex-changing
Richard Ekins | 1997-01-15 00:00:00 | Routledge | 208 | Transgender
Ekins vividly details the innermost desires and the varied practices of males who wear the clothes of women for the pleasure it gives them (cross-dressers), or who are actively changing sex (sex-changers). Based upon seventeen years of fieldwork, life history work, qualitative analysis, archival work and contact with several thousand cross-dressers and sex-changers, the book develops a theory of male femaling which has major ramifications for both the field of transvestism and transexualism, and for the analysis of sex and gender more generally.
Reviews
The term "male femaling" refers to one variant of "transgendering," wherein people adopt aspects of roles (as in appearances, interests, dispositions, and life-styles) associated with people of another gender. Although the topic of males endeavoring to "be female" in one or other respects is one that some people are apt to find disconcerting, this is a unique and valuable study of people's experiences in "gendering" or assuming roles as males and females.
Building on a set of contacts that extend over seventeen years, Richard Ekins has provided a very careful, thoughtful, and insightful account of people's involvements in cross-dressing and sex-changing activities. For people interested in the processes of socialization, identity, relationships, solitary and subcultural involvements, and the like, this is a very worthwhile study. Likewise, those interested in "gender theory" and "the body" as realms of sociological investigation could learn much from this inquiry.
In contrast, too, to those who might approach this subject matter in more prurient manners or with the objective of entertaining others, Ekins approaches this subject matter in academic terms. Thus, he neither promotes nor condemns people's gendering practices, but rather attempts to indicate in direct and open terms just how people actually experience and manage their identities and activities in the process of transgendering. Likewise, while sorting through a variety of medical and psychiatric definitions of transgendering activities, Ekins explicitly adopts a symbolic interactionist (Mead, Blumer) viewpoint. Thus, the emphasis is directly on examining the ways in which people engage particular situations, from their viewpoints. While focusing on those involved in an assortment of transgendering (male femaling) practices, the objective is to learn more about the ways in which human group life is accomplished more generally.
In addition to a careful accounting of people's careers of participation in male femaling activities more specifically, Ekins uses "grounded theory" wherein the emphasis is on comparative analysis (using a method of similarities and differences) to see to what extent and in what ways people's experiences in one setting compares with studies of similar processes (such as developing relationships, acquiring identity, and so forth) in other social arenas. The result is some very astute sociological analysis that addresses matters pertinent to the works of Mead, Blumer, Strauss, Goffman, Lemert, and others in the interactionist community.
This is a clear, very well written book, and an important contribution to the literature. It merits considerable attention on the part of social scientists and others interested in the human condition in all of its manifestations.
Reviews
This book is hard-core psychoanalysis stuff. If you are not a therapist, or buying this book for one, you may want to steer clear! I read, identified with, and enjoyed 'True Selves', but I found very little in this book to be considered new information. Other than a course lesson in "grounded theory", which I had no intention of recieving, this book was a snore-fest. I give it a good rating for it's quality as a teaching text, but again, steer clear if you are not into psychoanalytic thoeries.

Prof. Stefan Poslad | 2009-01-01 00:00:00 | Wiley; 1 edition | 502 | Other Engineering
This book provides an introduction to the complex field of ubiquitous computing

Ubiquitous Computing (also commonly referred to as Pervasive Computing) describes the ways in which current technological models, based upon three base designs: smart (mobile, wireless, service) devices, smart environments (of embedded system devices) and smart interaction (between devices), relate to and support a computing vision for a greater range of computer devices, used in a greater range of (human, ICT and physical) environments and activities. The author details the rich potential of ubiquitous computing, the challenges involved in making it a reality, and the prerequisite technological infrastructure. Additionally, the book discusses the application and convergence of several current major and future computing trends.

Key Features:
Provides an introduction to the complex field of ubiquitous computing
Describes how current technology models based upon six different technology form factors which have varying degrees of mobility wireless connectivity and service volatility: tabs, pads, boards, dust, skins and clay, enable the vision of ubiquitous computing
Describes and explores how the three core designs (smart devices, environments and interaction) based upon current technology models can be applied to, and can evolve to, support a vision of ubiquitous computing and computing for the future
Covers the principles of the following current technology models, including mobile wireless networks, service-oriented computing, human computer interaction, artificial intelligence, context-awareness, autonomous systems, micro-electromechanical systems, sensors, embedded controllers and robots
Covers a range of interactions, between two or more UbiCom devices, between devices and people (HCI), between devices and the physical world.
Includes an accompanying website with PowerPoint slides, problems and solutions, exercises, bibliography and further reading

Graduate students in computer science, electrical engineering and telecommunications courses will find this a fascinating and useful introduction to the subject. Leon Trotsky and the Politics of Economic Isolation (Cambridge Russian, Soviet and Post-Soviet Studies)

Leon Trotsky and the Politics of Economic Isolation (Cambridge Russian, Soviet and Post-Soviet Studies)
Richard B. Day | 2004-06-10 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 232 | Popular Economics
A highly original and controversial examination of events in Soviet Russia from 1917 to 1927 in which Professor Day challenges both the standard Trotskyite and Stalinist interpretations of the period. At the same time he rejects the traditional emphasis on Trotsky's concept of Permanent Revolution and argues that a Marxist theorist is essential. Professor Day concentrates upon the economic implications of revolutionary Russia's isolation from Europe. How to build socialism - in a backward, war-ravaged society, without aid from the West: this problem lay behind many of the most important political conflicts of Soviet Russia's formative years.
Reviews
This monograph offers much that is more than questionable, but since Trotsky as a political figure is generally dealt with by means of ideological cliché ("failed Stalin", "militarizer", and so on) one has to acknowledge that Day has instead dealt with him as a real political leader concerned with concrete issues, and not as a bogey.

Waste Management Practices: Municipal, Hazardous, and Industrial

Waste Management Practices: Municipal, Hazardous, and Industrial
John Pichtel | 2005-03-29 00:00:00 | CRC Press | 688 | Engineering
A practical guide for the identification and management of a range of hazardous wastes, Waste Management Practices: Municipal, Hazardous, and Industrial integrates technical information including chemistry, microbiology, and engineering, with current regulations. Emphasizing basic environmental science and related technical fields, the book is an introductory manual for waste management as mandated by Resource Conservation and Recovery Act and related statutes.

The first section of the book provides an overview of the historical and regulatory development of waste management. The second section delineates the management of municipal solid waste and includes coverage of conventional (e.g. sanitary landfill, aerobic composting) and innovative (bioreactor landfill, high-solids anaerobic digestion) technologies. The third section addresses hazardous wastes and their management, including identification, transportation, and requirements for generators and for treatment, storage, and disposal facilities. Disposition via incineration, chemical treatment, and land disposal are covered. The final section explores special categories of waste that often cannot find a regulatory "home" under either RCRA Subtitle D (Solid Wastes) or Subtitle C (Hazardous Wastes). Example waste types include used oil, construction and demolition debris, and electronics waste.

The garbage crisis, as it became known in the late 1980s, will not go away as long as humans continue to produce materials that nature does not possess the capability to decompose. Yet there are few, if any, references that collectively and comprehensively address the management of household, industrial, commercial, and hazardous wastes. Filling this need, Waste Management Practices focuses on the entire spectrum of wastes and their management.
Reviews
Solid waste management is a rapidly revolving field and one cannot rely on older editions of text/hand books. Laws and regulations, not just federal and municipal, but worldwide as well are being legislated routinely. Landfill technology must be improved to control leachate and methane;implications of 'high tech' waste from electronics must be recognized as never before; incineration can be promising if proper containment of pollution, and reasonable costs can be implemented; separation technologies to distinguish different color of glass, grades of paper, types of metals and plastics need to be fully developed for use in recycling faciltities. New research in efficent composting are being recognized. And this handbook is the best source for a novice solid waste professional.

The first English translation of Macherey's philosophical work. Best known for his work in literary criticism, Pierre Macherey has, over the past two decades, producted a series of original philosophical works. This first collection of his philosophical writings to be published in English discloses the full range of Macherey's interventions, testifying to his signal status as one of France's leading philosophers. In a Materialst Way ranges over Macherey's writings on philosophy and theory, critiques of the work of major figures in contemporary French thought such as Lacan, Foucoult and Canguilhem, and analyses of the work of Spinoza. It reveals to English-speaking audiences what has long been common knowlege in France: that Pierre Macherey is among the most fertile, imaginative and subtle of contemporary philosophers.

The Cambridge Ancient History, Volume 3, Part 1: The Prehistory of the Balkans, the Middle East and the Aegean World, Tenth to Eighth Centuries BC
John Boardman,I. E. S. Edwards,N. G. L. Hammond,E. Sollberger | 1982-09-30 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 1059 | Ancient
Volume III of The Cambridge Ancient History was first published in 1925 in one volume. The new edition has expanded to such an extent, owing to the immense amount of new information now available, that it has had to be divided into three parts. Volume III Part 1 opens with a survey of the Balkans north of Greece in the Prehistoric period. This is the first time such a survey has been published of this area which besides its intrinsic interest is important for its influence on the cultures of the Aegean and Anatolia. The rest of the book is devoted to the tenth to the eigth centuries B. C. In Greece and the Aegean the main theme is the gradual regeneration from the Dark Age and the emergence of a society in which can be seen the beginnings of the city-state. During the same period in Western Asia and the Middle East the Kingdoms of Assyria and Babylonia rise to power, the Urartians appear, and in Palestine the kingdoms of Israel and Judah flourish. In Egypt the country's fortunes revive briefly under Shoshenq I. The final chapter in this part deals with the languages of Greece and the Balkans and with the invention and spread of alphabetic writing.

Not what I use to in bibles
This and others I have seem to lack what the old bibles use to have. There were tones of stuff missing and seemed for the most part a beginners guide for vista then a bible/reference manual for vista. I gave this one to a friend because I knew more then what was in it.

Windows Vista Bible by Alan Simpson
I have another book by Alan Simpson the XP bible and it has helped me out numerous times so it was the first book I purchased when I was forced to switch to Vista. I think he writes in a clear easy to understand manner and everything is categorized in chapters and the index, for quick location.I don't find this a book one would read cover to cover but as a reference its indispensible. I find more answers through this than from any help program or asking others. The only reason I would not give it a five is because of its size, its a super thick full of information book but its cumbersome to keep on your desk or on your lap it wont stay open it has so many pages! Not really a complaint but I think perhaps a wire ring or coil binding might make it easier to deal with due to its size.

User review
The Best
Window's Vista Bible by Alan Simpson is the best. It is like having the author sitting with you personally. Everything is clearly explained and I haven't come across a Vista or computer topic that is not discussed. He also includes a lot of extra notes and tips. I can't imagine any book like this being written any better.

User review
Somewhat, but not Totally Helpful
Borrowed this book for assistance in transferring and setting up 4,000+ photos from Windows XP into numerous folders. The directions by Simpson given did provide what appear to be the promised results - an invaluable contribution.

Next, I tried using the book to set up a screen-saver using my photos. The dialog box referenced in the book did not exist - no help at all.

Have since returned the book; I'm thinking 50% assistance is not that good.

User review
Good for beginner and intermediate users
This is a good book to get started with Vista. If you are a beginner user or intermediate, this is the book for you. You will learn many things which saves you time. It is directed to 'use' Vista, to work with it in everyday life. It is well written, nice lay out. However, if you look for advanced tricks, undocumented features, hacker-type-of action and a real deep dive in understanding Vista, this book will not cover it. The advanced user will skip many pages because it is known stuff.

Nonequilibrium Quantum Field Theory (Cambridge Monographs on Mathematical Physics)

Nonequilibrium Quantum Field Theory (Cambridge Monographs on Mathematical Physics)
Esteban A. Calzetta,Bei-Lok B. Hu | 2008-10-06 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 552 | Earth Sciences
Bringing together the key ideas from nonequilibrium statistical mechanics and powerful methodology from quantum field theory, this book captures the essence of nonequilibrium quantum field theory. Beginning with the foundational aspects of the theory, the book presents important concepts and useful techniques, discusses issues of basic interest, and shows how thermal field, linear response, kinetic theories and hydrodynamics emerge. It also illustrates how these concepts and methodology are applied to current research topics including nonequilibrium phase transitions, thermalization in relativistic heavy ion collisions, the nonequilibrium dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensation, and the generation of structures from quantum fluctuations in the early Universe. Divided into five parts, each part addresses a particular stage in the conceptual and technical development of the subject.
Reviews
This is a very good reference book, summarizing the work that the authors have done. Nonequilibrium quantum field theory is something new to many physicists, and this book provides a very clear explanation about the basic formalisms, physics, and its application in condensed matter physics, high energy physics and cosmology.

The Body Has a Mind of Its Own: How Body Maps in Your Brain Help You Do

The Body Has a Mind of Its Own: How Body Maps in Your Brain Help You Do
Sandra Blakeslee and Matthew Blakeslee | 2007-01-01 00:00:00 | Random House | 240 | Health and Care
What do golfer's yips, the ability to see auras and the hypnotic appeal of video games all have in common? Each arises from the brain's body map. New York Times science contributor Sandra Blakeslee and her son, science writer Matthew Blakeslee, begin with a quick overview of the sense of touch. According to the Blakeslees, body maps are created by the brain, using touch, to spell out the brain's experience of the body and the space around it. These maps expand and contract to include objects such as clothing, tools or even your car. Some of the more interesting subjects the Blakeslees cover include muscle tone disorders, phantom limb sensations in amputees and the inaccurate body images associated with anorexia. Sketches and sidebars explore topics in more detail, while a glossary explains technical terms. With its breezy this is so cool style, this entertaining book will appeal to readers who prefer their science lighthearted and low-key.

Global Manifest Destiny: Growing Your Business in a Borderless Economy

Global Manifest Destiny: Growing Your Business in a Borderless Economy
John A. Caslione,Andrew R. Thomas | 2001-10-15 00:00:00 | Kaplan Business | 234 | International
Just ten years ago, the chance to become a major player on the world stage was reserved almost exclusively for the most powerful companies in any given industry. Most smaller companies found it too costly and time-consuming to conduct any kind of global business besides exporting. But in today's economy, "going global" is a matter of survival. In this indispensable road map to becoming a global enterprise, two of the world's leading experts on global business, the international economy, and globalization, John A. Caslione and Andrew R. Thomas, provide the knowledge and expertise companies need to establish a successful worldwide presence. Global Manifest Destiny shows business leaders how to: *Integrate a global culture. *Build worldwide brands compatible with cultural differences. *Create a global accounts management program. *Take full advantage of swings in the world's financial markets. *Optimize potential sources of raw materials, goods, and services worldwide.
Reviews
Finally a book that helps me to understand what a global company is supposed to look like!
Reviews
As President of the International Division for H20 Plus, Inc., I have had the opportunity to thoroughly read John Caslione's book. I found the book to be extraordinarily practical and easy to read in all respects. It was very informative with useful information, in particular, relating to various sources of information, including websites that can be used as references for particular research. For anyone involved in international business, I highly recommend this book. Since I have read 'Global Manifest Destiny', I have gone back on several occasions to make reference to certain sections in it that are particularly relevant to our international business operations.
Reviews
Global Manifest Destiny is one of those rare reads. It's practical, logical, and cuts to the heart of any business's concerns about competing in the global marketplace. It offers an almost self-diagnosis for small to medium-sized enterprizes who understand that global economic integration is inevitable - and not just for the big players any more. Each chapter provides expert guidance in developing a checklist of key business functions that must be addressed in order to succeed globally, and the succinct delivery is a pleasure to read. Highly recommended!!
Reviews
What set this book apart for me was that it is written at a fast pace...quite unlike most business books I read. That means I picked it up one afternoon and read it cover to cover like a gripping novel. Usually, I dip in and out of business books or just read certain chapters. 'Global Manifest Destiny' is full of business-relevant facts, which in part support the main proposition that there is an inevitable coming together of the economies of the world - but which also stand alone as interesting and important statistics.

I have promised myself to re-read this book in one month's time just to make doubly sure I retain the key learning. This is essential in my role for JTI. Mine is a global role for a global player. This book helps.
Reviews
As a follow up to the first volume, Growing Your Business in Emerging Markets, this new book, Global Manifest Destiny, takes the reader to an even deeper understanding of the significance of globality and its inevitability for an healthy business environment.
The large and hands-on experience of the authors comes through every page and it makes for an unusually enjoyable read for its gender as well as a very profitable one.
We wish this book had been available few years ago. It would have helped us to avoid some pitfalls and a number of headaches.
If the world is your business theater, or you would like make it so, this book is for you!

Deutsche Grammatik - Regeln, Normen, Sprachgebrauch (Institut Fur Deutsche Sprache Jahrbuch 2008) (German Edition)
Marek Konopka | 2009-05-15 00:00:00 | Walter de Gruyter | 378 | German
Concern for the German language will always attract large audiences. Whoever claims that language is going to the dogs can be sure of the approbation of those who see themselves as linguistically superior. However, the status of grammatical rules is seldom questioned. It is in fact by no means clear what can be seen as correct German. How is ´;German´ to be understood? Who determines what should be regarded as correct? The 44th Annual Conference of the Institut für Deutsche Sprache [German Language Research Institute] endeavoured to help clarify questions such as these, and took as its topic German grammar in the tension between rules, standards and language usage.

So What: The Definitive Guide to the Only Business Questions that Matter

So What: The Definitive Guide to the Only Business Questions that Matter
Kevin Duncan | 2008-03-21 00:00:00 | Capstone | 260 | Leadership
So What? gets straight to the point so you can cut through the noise and nonsense of work. Much of what we learn in our formative years is unlearnt in later life. As grown-ups we are often unable to answer the simplest of questions in a clear, direct way, and frequently have no idea why we are doing something. This can lead to crippling inefficiency in business, and goes some way to explaining why so many people spend so much time doing things that have no bearing on the true purpose.

by behaving in a genuinely inquisitive way, you can get right to the heart of the matter and save yourself hours, days, and even months of anguish. The questions So what?, Why?, How?, and When? can be hugely effective when applied in the right context, and this book shows you how to use them.

Once all the right questions have been posed, there is a final sure-fire method for testing whether something is relevant and helpful. By completing the sentence "Something must be wrong if...", it is simple to work out if you are wasting your time. For example, "Something must be wrong if I don't want to go to work in the morning."

So What? shows you how to become truly inquisitive again. So let the questions roll. Pay attention to what the answers are. Learn from them, and you will immediately improve your prospects of finally getting somewhere in life.

'So What? The Definitive Guide to the Only Business Questions That Matter, by Kevin Duncan;

I reckon it has to do partly with my engineering training, especially from my days of daily involvement in technical problem solving, that I have been fascinated by the power of questions.

I also remember back in school, especially during essay writing, the common 'Journalist's Questions' were a formidable tool in flushing out relevant details in preparing a written proposition.

As part of my reading repertoire, I have also found that probing questions, using extended variations of the 'Journalists' Questions', often help me to navigate the texts & question the authors at exponential speeds.

The first business book that gave me a lot of interesting insights about the power of questions was Dorothy Leeds' 'Smart Questions: A New Strategy for Successful Managers' during the eighties.

This was followed later by Anthony Robbins' 'Awaken the Giant Within' in the nineties. His treatment of questions in terms of achieving personal mastery was really excellent.

Since then, & over the years, I have acquired & read several wonderful books in this genre. I have reviewed many of them in earlier posts &/or on the Amazon.com website.

I am very glad to acquire & also to read 'So What? The Definitive Guide to the Only Business Questions That Matter', a new book by Kevin Duncan, an Oxford-trained business advisor & marketing expert.

First of all, I must compliment the author for his ingenuity & inventiveness in pushing the standard 'Journalists' Questions' to the highest order, culminating into the 'So What? Cycle of Questions' as embodied in his book.

The result is an intelligently inquisitive way to help readers to get right to the heart of strategic issue management, irrespective of whether it's for business or otherwise.

In a nut shell, the cycle consists of ten structured questions, organised in a step-by-step manner, starting with 'So What?', followed by 'Why?', next, 'How?', 'Who?', 'When?' & 'Where?'.

The next three questions are designed as some sort of reality checks in the questioning process:

- 'Do we really need to do this?'

- 'Something must be wrong if'...

- 'Are we there yet?

The 'what?' is left as a postscript at the end, because, according to the author, "if you haven't worked out what you are doing in the first place, the you shouldn't be embarking on other questions at all".

What I like about the author's innovative approach to questioning is the intended surfacing of emotions in the process.

The author shares a novel approach with great examples on how to move from pointless expression of feelings to helpful directional expression of feelings. He calls it, 'pointy thinking'.

In the end analysis, although the cycle of question plays a vital role in the inquisition process, I must say that the crux of issue management lies in the produced answers, & also in the many different scenarios that come out of the produced answers.

Come to think of it, questioning is fishing. Fishing for insights!

I have really enjoyed reading - & playing with the questions in - this book thoroughly.

For business applications, I would also recommend this book to be read with 'Question of Business' by Curtis Page.

Advanced Compiler Design and Implementation

Advanced Compiler Design and Implementation
| 1997-08-15 00:00:00 | | 0 | Compilers

Optimizing compilers, which turn human-readable programming languages into the smallest, most efficient machine code possible, are among the most complex pieces of software ever written. Building a compiler is both science and black art and demands an intimate knowledge of data structures, algorithms, high-level programming languages, and processor architectures and their instruction sets. Advanced Compiler Design and Implementation presents a comprehensive and technically up-to-date look at design of real-world compilers for CISC- and RISC-based uni-processor architectures. The author led the advanced compiler design and implementation teams for both Hewlett-Packard's PA-RISC and Sun Microsystems's SPARC processors.

Relational Processes and DSM-V: Neuroscience, Assessment, Prevention, and Treatment

Relational Processes and DSM-V: Neuroscience, Assessment, Prevention, and Treatment
Steven R. H. Beach,Marianne Z. Wamboldt,Nadine J. Kaslow,Richard E. Heyman,Michael B. First,Lynn G. Underwood,David Reiss | 2006-06-10 00:00:00 | American Psychiatric Publishing | 293 | Internal Medicine
Seeking to integrate the large volume of clinical research on relational processes and mental health disorders with other scientific advances in psychiatry, Relational Processes and DSM-V builds on exciting advances in clinical research on troubled relationships. These advances included marked improvements in the assessment and epidemiology of troubled relationships as well the use of genetics, neuroscience, and immunology to explore the importance of close relationships in clinical practice. Advances in family-based intervention, and prevention are also highlighted to help practitioners and researchers find common ground and begin an empirically based discussion about the best way to revise the DSM. Given the overwhelming research showing that relationships play a role in regulating neurobiology and genetic expression and are critical for understanding schizophrenia, conduct disorder, and depression among other disorders, relational processes must be a part of any empirically based plan for revising psychiatric nosology in DSM-V.
The chapters in this book counter the perspective that we can safely discard the biopsychosocial model that has guided psychiatry in the past. The contributors examine the relevance of close relationships in such issues as the basic psychopathology of mental disorders, factors influencing maintenance and relapse, sources of burden for family members, and guiding family-based interventions. By tying relational processes to basic research on psychopathology, they demonstrate the value of integrating basic behavioral and brain research with a sophisticated understanding of the self-organizing and self-sustaining characteristics of relationships. Coverage includes:
  • research linking relational processes to neuroscience, neurobiology, health outcomes, intervention research, prevention research, and genetics
  • consideration of specific circumstances, such as promoting healthy parenting following divorce and relational processes in depressed Latino adolescents
  • optimal approaches to the assessment of relational processes with clinical significance, such as child abuse, partner abuse, and expressed emotion.
  • a simple introduction to the methodology of taxometrics, offering insight into whether key relational processes are distinct categories or continuously distributed variables
  • an overview of the links between relational processes and psychiatric outcomes, providing a theoretical foundation for the discussion of links to psychopathology
Together, these contributions seek to develop a shared commitment among clinicians, researchers, and psychopathologists to take seriously the issue of relational processes as they relate to diagnoses within DSM-and to encourage mental health care workers at all levels to harness the generative and healing properties of intimate relationships and make them a focus of clinical practice. It is a book that will prove useful to all who are interested in integrating greater sensitivity to relational processes in their work.

User review
Good for learning the important pieces
I recommend this book to experienced developers, although the topics are discussed clearly enough that a patient novice developer will gain much. Because the book assumes the reader has knowledge of basic web technologies, those with a background in earlier versions of ASP.NET or other web development platforms will get the most out of it.

The approach the author took was to give the reader the most pertinent information to bring him or her up to speed quickly. Only the most useful information is presented--which is why the book contains the word `core` in the title rather than `complete.` For example, when presenting a new control to the reader, the author discusses only the most-used features of the control. Often, he will mention other, less-used features so the reader knows they are available, but will not provide examples or provide much detail over these non-core features. If you are looking for an exhaustive reference of all the features of ASP.NET 2.0, this is not the book for you. However, if you are looking to learn ASP.NET 2.0, this book will cover 90% or so of the features you will likely use for any project.

The typical presentation of an aspect of ASP.NET 2.0 in this book is to provide a brief description, a screenshot or two, and an explanation of what kind of situations are appropriate for its use. Most items also include example code, with additional screenshots. I especially appreciated that the examples were simple, but clearly demonstrated the use of the item they were explaining. The code for the examples was presented in its entirety, but use of bold text on the pieces being demonstrated made the examples very understandable and helped me go through them more quickly than the typical code example. Also the use of labeling in the screenshots made it easy to see the results of what each code example was doing.

Overall, this was a very efficient way to quickly learn about each feature of ASP.NET 2.0. The book was a surprisingly fast read for a technical manual. Right at the point where I became bogged down with too much detailed information about controls, data sources, etc, the author took a step back and began discussing higher-level topics such as contemporary software design and the appropriate use of layers or tiers when designing a web application. Although I have had experience designing multi-layered or tiered web applications, this higher-level discussion was nice because all the details of ASP.NET 2.0 were very fresh in my mind. I was able to think about application design in a new light now that I understood the capabilities of ASP.NET 2.0.

The book's last few chapters step away from the web applications themselves and discuss the `other` things pertaining to ASP.NET 2.0, such as web services, security within web applications, and deployment of applications. These are useful in that they give a slightly more complete set of information on developing internet applications with ASP.NET 2.0.

Summary -

If you are looking for a way to quickly get up to speed in ASP.NET 2.0, without getting bogged down in too many details, I highly recommend this book.

User review
Not a classic ASP.NET 2.0 intro book
Read the book from start to the end. Not to be harsh, this is not a good book for the beginners, nor for experienced users. For beginners, the book doesn't explain some of the topic clearly, such as Page Life cycle. The way the book explain this topic might scare readers away from learning ASP.NET; for medium level programmers, this book doesn't touch any of the advanced topic, such as building custom controls. Also for the amount of knowledge covered in the book, the size should be reduced to 500 pages. If you want to learn ASP.NET, Beginning ASP.NET 2.0, Pro ASP.NET 2.0, and ASP.NET 2.0 Website Programming: Problem-Design-Solution are the three definitive books.
