Digital Systems Design and Prototyping: Using Field Programmable Logic and Hardware Description Languages

Digital Systems Design and Prototyping: Using Field Programmable Logic and Hardware Description Languages
Zoran Salcic, Asim Smailagic | 2000-01-01 00:00:00 | Springer; 2nd edition | 648 | Electrical Engineering
Note: CD-ROM is not included.

Digital Systems Design and Prototyping: Using Field Programmable Logic and Hardware Description Languages, Second Edition covers the subject of digital systems design using two important technologies: Field Programmable Logic Devices (FPLDs) and Hardware Description Languages (HDLs). These two technologies are combined to aid in the design, prototyping, and implementation of a whole range of digital systems from very simple ones replacing traditional glue logic to very complex ones customized as the applications require.
Three HDLs are presented: VHDL and Verilog, the widely used standard languages, and the proprietary Altera HDL (AHDL). The chapters on these languages serve as tutorials and comparisons are made that show the strengths and weaknesses of each language.
A large number of examples are used in the description of each language providing insight for the design and implementation of FPLDs.
The CD-ROM included with the book contains the Altera MAX+PLUS II development environment which is ready to compile and simulate all examples. With the addition of the Altera UP-1 prototyping board, all examples can be tested and verified in a real FPLD.
Digital Systems Design and Prototyping: Using Field Programmable Logic and Hardware Description Languages, Second Edition is designed as an advanced level textbook as well as a reference for the professional engineer.

Reviews

Summary: Great Book!
Rating: 5

This is a great book for those with Background knowledge in Digital Systems. Good coverage on both Digital Systems Design and FPGAs. If you're a Computer Systems Engineering Student you'll find this book very useful.

Summary: Don't buy this book!
Rating: 1

This book is a waste of time and money. Three-quarters of this book is spent on AHDL, VHDL, Verilog. If you want to learn HDL then this book is definitely not for you since its not detailed enough to cover all 3 languages. As for learning about FPGAs, there is alot of valuable information out on the internet that you could get without an expensive price tag. Or else there are some other great books on FPGAs that you could purchase. This is one of the few books that I hardly got any use out of.

Summary: Good Coverage !!
Rating: 4

This book covers the each and every theory about designing FPLDs using AHDL and VHDL. As an Engineering student, this is a very useful book to read and can learn AHDL and VHDL yourself.

I had no problems with this company. The book was here within one week. I would buy from them again.

User review
Excellent and comprehensive resource for the IT professional
Invaluable resource if your company is interested in outsourcing. I particularly valued the forms which I found to be cutting edge. I am a customer of outsourcing and I would recommend this book to any IT professional thinking about outsourcing. This book would also help vendors by providing insight to issues that are critical to customers.

User review
The best book on IT Outsourcing available.
I was looking for a single and concise resource that would provide provide me with a solid foundation for working in the IT Outsourcing field - especially legal aspects. I found it in this book. No other resource was as helpful. As I've gained experience, the book continues to be extremely useful. It is written in easy to understand language and, importantly, in a practical manner. The disk and forms included provide the practitioner with a significant portion of what is needed to `do the deal`

User review
Random collection of materials
This book seems to have been thrown together in no time at all by taking a few things about outsourcing out of the authors' files. Some of the stuff is good, but it's all very uneven.

Hair Follicle: Differentiation under the Electron Microscope - An Atlas

Hair Follicle: Differentiation under the Electron Microscope - An Atlas
K. Morioka | 2004-12-15 00:00:00 | Springer | 152 | Internal Medicine

The electron microscope has been used in hair research for half a century, but the knowledge gained through this study has become rather fragmented over the years. While the molecular biological study of hair has become an active field, even here, as in more traditional research, an understanding of the morphological aspects is essential because the hair follicle structure is highly complex. The author explicates the structure, development, and differentiation of the hair follicle, using his own original photographs and explanations of current research, including growth factors, differentiation-inducers, cell signaling pathways, and transcription factors. With neonatal rats as subjects, he focuses on the morphological analysis of all basic hair cells - in the shaft, matrix, and papilla - from birth to death. The introductory chapter will benefit novices, with the following sections consisting mainly of explanations of the electron microscopic photographs of hair cells.

Knots and Links

Knots and Links
Peter R. Cromwell | 2004-11-15 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 346 | Mathematics
Knot theory is the study of embeddings of circles in space. Peter Cromwell has written a textbook on knot theory designed for use in advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate-level courses. The exposition is detailed and careful yet engaging and full of motivation. Numerous examples and exercises serve to help students through the material, while an instructor's manual is available online.
Reviews
The topics covered in this book are terrific. The presentation is disappointing. Before I'd finished the book I'd posted a review with 3.5 stars, now that I've completed a first reading of the book, I'd give it closer to 3. (Amazon won't let me revise the star count.)

Some pluses: In theory the book is accessible to advanced undergraduates without a prerequisite course in topology. Necessary results from that field are presented as "facts" in Chapter 2. (Nonetheless, a course in graph theory is a stated prerequisite, and is often relied on in the text.) The bibliography is quite extensive. A publisher's blurb somewhere trumpets the "hundreds" of diagrams in the book -- but more than a third of these appear in appendices and catalogues of knots. The discussion of arc presentations of braids in Ch. 10, a subject on which PC (the author) has published extensively, is quite interesting.

The main disappointment is that there aren't nearly enough diagrams in the main text, making many arguments hard to follow. PC relies instead on terse, formal mathematical descriptions as much as possible. Chapter 2's long recital of definitions and theorems from topology -- which, by hypothesis, are subjects in which his expected reader lacks background -- is a relative desert of diagrams. Chapter 3's description of companion and satellite knots is accompanied by an unlabeled diagram that leaves one confused as to which knot is which. The description of Seifert surfaces in Chapter 6 is so abstract I found it impossible to visualize even on repeated readings, before I consulted another text. And even if a diagram were too much to ask, would it really have stressed PC to include a sentence saying that a "meridian" wraps round the torus the short way and a "longitude" the long way, instead of leaving these non-intuitive defnitions implicit in equations (@10)? PC also often refers to diagrams in earlier chapters, thus chopping up your concentration by making you flip pages.

By contrast, compare any book by Kauffman (or even his original papers). They're very generous with diagrams, even incorporating them into lines of a proof. The original 1998 paper by Bar-Natan, Fulman & Kauffman, written for pros, is a much clearer exposition of the important concept of "surgery equivalence" than is PC's description for beginners (Chapter 6 @114-118). Even though most of PC's diagrams are based on the paper's, he uses only a few of them and has stripped them of helpful labels. (The paper is available for free online as I write this.)

Another sharp contrast is Colin Adams's "The Knot Book", published by Freeman. Although written more like a popularization than a math textbook, it has significant overlap with the book under review, even including some of the material on braids in PC's chapter 10. It made it relatively easy to grasp satellites/companions, the Seifert algortithm and many other topics, including the Kauffman bracket polynomial, another instance where PC is confusing despite his use of diagrams. I srongly recommend it as an adjunct read.

In addition to 1 point off for the obscure style, I automatically deducted 1 star because the book lacks solutions or even hints to exercises. The proofs of many significant theorems are left as exercises, so this is no small thing. (PC's own website disclaims that solutions will be available anytime soon, if ever.) Also, many of the exercises say "show" and others say "prove", but the distinction, if any, is not clear in context; often you're asked to "show" certain things are true "for any knot", e.g. @Ex.3.10.5.

To give credit where credit is due, PC very swiftly and graciously replied to an email inquiry from me about a point that I'd misunderstood. I very much appreciate that, and it says good things about the author. But it's not a workable solution for everyone, or even for all the stuff that confused me. I hope that PC will be a bit more indulgent to beginners in a future edition of this book.

Finally, some wags of the finger to the publisher: (1) The blurb mentions applications of knot theory to chemistry, biology, etc., but such stuff occupies less than 1.5 pages out of 280+ of text (a biology example that is mentioned briefly, followed by cites to some papers (@212-213).) (2) When I bought this book in 2005, the cover price was $40; as of this review it's gone up 40+%, if we ignore Amazon's discount. It's a handsome book, printed on expensive coated stock, a kind Cambridge also uses for textbooks with lots of color. But all the illustrations are black-and-white line drawings -- no need for such fancy paper at all. Had the publisher made a more sensible production choice, maybe the price for the paperback could have stayed at a more reasonable and student-friendly level.

The Fast Forward MBA in Project Management, Second Edition

The Fast Forward MBA in Project Management, Second Edition
Eric Verzuh | 2005-01-28 00:00:00 | Wiley | 416 | Project Management
An updated and revised edition of a bestselling guide to project management
The first edition of The Fast Forward MBA in Project Management sold over 100,000 copies and has been widely adopted in university courses and corporate training programs around the world. The book teaches the basic methods for defining, planning, and tracking a project, as well as techniques for leading and building strong project teams.

This new edition includes:

  • Downloadable, customizable project management forms
  • Study aids for passing the popular Project Management Professional certification exam
  • Guidelines for building high-performance project teams
  • New examples of project management at work in the 21st century
Eric Verzuh (Seattle, WA) is certified by the Project Management Institute and is President of The Versatile Company, which delivers project management training and consulting services to such companies as Adobe Systems, Inc., GE, Lockheed Martin, Nordstrom, and the United States Postal Service. He is also the author of The Portable MBA in Project Management (0-471-26899-2), from Wiley.
Until the early '90s, project management was definitely located somewhere near the unsexy end of the business spectrum. But now, with the rise of downsizing and outsourcing, it has become one of the hot disciplines. Professional membership of the U.S.-based Project Management Institute has quadrupled in the last decade, and Microsoft claimed recently to have over 2 million users worldwide of its project-management software. The reasons for this growth are simple. Project management is about managing "projects," that is, unique pieces of work (as opposed to ongoing operations). Downsizing, outsourcing, and the accelerating pace of change have meant that, increasingly, work is carried out on an ad-hoc, one-off project basis. The Fast Forward MBA in Project Management is designed as an advanced textbook for businesspeople with a grasp of the basics and insufficient time (or inclination) to go back to school to learn more. Written by Eric Verzuh, president of the Versatile Company, a leading project-management consultancy, this is not a heavy academic text.

Like the rest of the Fast Forward series, this book is designed to let the reader extract maximum information in minimum time. There is a strong use of graphics with tables, charts cross-heads, and bullet points. Important passages are flagged in bold and/or emblazoned with the words key concept. When you read it, you realize that there is nothing magical about project management, just the application of careful common sense. The book covers all the basic stuff like planning, time-tabling, quantity and price estimation, resource allocation, and scheduling. But it also acknowledges that there is inevitably a political dimension to every project, no matter how small. So it has important sections on how to ensure that all the stakeholders in the project are kept "on board" and the importance of communication.

As Verzuh states in his introduction, "Every project participant from part-time team member to executive sponsor, becomes more effective once he or she understands the basics of project management." Really, this is a book about management that every manager should read, whether he or she has a project or not. --Alex Benady

Dear Eric Verzuh,

I am already enjoying the fruits of your labor! Between the book and the download able forms I think and feel empowered to present my ideas in a way that will make a difference for me and the projects I work on. As I begin down the path of project management as a profession, your book makes ideas and activities tangible. I could tell you that past projects I've been on weren't done right, but I couldn't tell you why. They just didn't feel right. Now, I can point to the responsibility matrix, for example, and say that issue X, Y, and Z were caused by not having done this important document. And knowing is half the battle! Thank you for a user-friendly view into the world of project management.

Thank you,

Rita

DNS on Windows Server 2003

DNS on Windows Server 2003
| 1969-12-31 00:00:00 | | 0 | Networks

While computers and other devices identify each other on networks or the Internet by using unique addresses made up of numbers, humans rely on the Domain Name System (DNS), the distributed database that allows us to identify machines by name. DNS does the work of translating domain names into numerical IP addresses, routing mail to its proper destination, and many other services, so that users require little or no knowledge of the system. If you're a network or system administrator, however, configuring, implementing, and maintaining DNS zones can be a formidable challenge. And now, with Windows Server 2003, an understanding of the workings of DNS is even more critical.

DNS on Windows Server 20003 is a special Windows-oriented edition of the classic DNS and BIND, newly updated to document the many changes to DNS, large and small, found in Windows Server 2003. Veteran O'Reilly authors, Cricket Liu, Matt Larson, and Robbie Allen explain the whole system in terms of the new Windows Server 2003, from starting and stopping a DNS service to establishing an organization's namespace in the global hierarchy.

Besides covering general issues like installing, setting up, and maintaining the server, DNS on Windows Server 2003 tackles the many issues specific to the new Windows environment, including the use of the dnscmd program to manage the Microsoft DNS Server from the command line and development using the WMI DNS provider to manage the name server programmatically. The book also documents new features of the Microsoft DNS Server in Windows Server 2003, including conditional forwarding and zone storage in Active Directory (AD) application partitions.

DNS on Windows Server 2003 provides grounding in:

Security issues

System tuning

Caching Zone change notification

Troubleshooting

Planning for growth

If you're a Windows administrator, DNS on Windows Server 2003 is the operations manual you need for working with DNS every day. If you're a Windows user who simply wants to take the mystery out of the Internet, this book is a readable introduction to the Internet's architecture and inner workings.

User review
WARNING - You must have some DNS knowledge first.
This book gets very indepth about DNS. It's dry and very technical making it a hard and boring read. I don't recommend this book for the newbie. You really should have some general knowledge about the subject before buying this book.

The explanations throughout the book are difficult to follow and can be confusing. It could of been better written with a simplified approach.

After reading this book I now realize how dull DNS really is.

User review
Updates are always good.
I was already fimilar with DNS from the first issues of this book. But this new issue does cover Microsoft DNS which I believe is excellent.

More ISP and System Admins nowadays are reliaing on MS DNS because it comes free with Microsoft Servers, high performance, it has a text based like Unix DNS, it is easy to maintain and the big reason is that it's easy to pass on the DNS responsibilities to any lower cost IT staff.

User review
Don't use this book if you are preparing for 70-291.
I just recently bought this book because of the fine reviews people gave.

The reason i bought this book is to get a clearer understanding of DNS related to Server 2003. I don't want to be a paper MCSE so i look voor as

much study material on the subject where i can get my hands on.

To cut corners if you are studying for the 70-291 please buy this book read it and come back here and tell how much it helped you. For me it was

a waste of money. The info can be obtained by smart Google searches.

That was my oppinion now about the book itself.

It starts very good i have to say with the explaination of DNS in an overview. The book is ok until you are getting at chapter 5 of the 16th chapters.

Chapter 5 is about MX records Exhange etc. The chapter is much to brief in my oppinion arround 9 pages or 4 A4 pages.

Chapter 7 is better but after that downhill. I skipped chapters.

Chapter 15 and 16 are again uphill.

To recap my experiences, the Book starts very promising in the first 4 chapters, they walk you through the installation of some DNS servers, and

the strange thing is they leave that path. The stuf gets boring to read over the chapters that follow and it turns out in a dry textbook.

TO end there is an old saying in Holland perhaps english speakers know it also: 'In the land of the blind one eye is King'. Consultants

are being payed to Design and set up in this case DNS solutions, its like shooting in your own foot to write well written books on those subjects.

And thats the problem, i found the official Microsoft 70-291 and the DNS discussed there of a better quality, a big Shame on you guys!!

Matt Larson, Cricket Liu and Robbie Allen.

User review
The book for Windows DNS
I got this book coming from a BIND background and wanting to move to Windows DNS (I do have a valid reason). The first few chapters cover DNS background similar to the BIND book. After that it moves on into how to do things in the Windows world. It uses examples that are straight from the BIND book but done in Windows 2003. There are lots of screen shots and clear explanation. One of the really good things, for those coming from a *nix background, are the chapters on running from a command line and using PERL scripts to manage DNS. Overall it is a great book for anyone running DNS on Windows.

User review
Good review
Well written book, it needs to be updated for newer operating systems that are now being used. Good examples and illustrations, the book will be a good review or refresher for those that haven't been around DNS in a while.

Dead Souls: A Novel

Dead Souls: A Novel
Nikolai Gogol | 1997-03-25 00:00:00 | Vintage | 432 | Classics
Since its publication in 1842, Dead Souls has been celebrated as a supremely realistic portrait of provincial Russian life and as a splendidly exaggerated tale; as a paean to the Russian spirit and as a remorseless satire of imperial Russian venality, vulgarity, and pomp. As Gogol's wily antihero, Chichikov, combs the back country wheeling and dealing for "dead souls"--deceased serfs who still represent money to anyone sharp enough to trade in them--we are introduced to a Dickensian cast of peasants, landowners, and conniving petty officials, few of whom can resist the seductive illogic of Chichikov's proposition. This lively, idiomatic English version by the award-winning translators Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky makes accessible the full extent of the novel's lyricism, sulphurous humor, and delight in human oddity and error.
A socially adept newcomer fluidly inserts himself into an unnamed Russian town, conquering first the drinkers, then the dignitaries. All find him amiable, estimable, agreeable. But what exactly is Pavel Ivanovich Chichikov up to?--something that will soon throw the town "into utter perplexity."

After more than a week of entertainment and "passing the time, as they say, very pleasantly," he gets down to business--heading off to call on some landowners. More pleasantries ensue before Chichikov reveals his bizarre plan. He'd like to buy the souls of peasants who have died since the last census. The first landowner looks carefully to see if he's mad, but spots no outward signs. In fact, the scheme is innovative but by no means bonkers. Even though Chichikov will be taxed on the supposed serfs, he will be able to count them as his property and gain the reputation of a gentleman owner. His first victim is happy to give up his souls for free--less tax burden for him. The second, however, knows Chichikov must be up to something, and the third has his servants rough him up. Nonetheless, he prospers.

Dead Souls is a feverish anatomy of Russian society (the book was first published in 1842) and human wiles. Its author tosses off thousands of sublime epigrams--including, "However stupid a fool's words may be, they are sometimes enough to confound an intelligent man," and is equally adept at yearning satire: "Where is he," Gogol interrupts the action, "who, in the native tongue of our Russian soul, could speak to us this all-powerful word: forward? who, knowing all the forces and qualities, and all the depths of our nature, could, by one magic gesture, point the Russian man towards a lofty life?" Flannery O'Connor, another writer of dark genius, declared Gogol "necessary along with the light." Though he was hardly the first to envision property as theft, his blend of comic, fantastic moralism is sui generis.--Kerry Fried
Reviews
Dead Souls is about the enterprising Chichikov, a man of questionable origins who goes throughout the Russian countryside trying to implement a bizarre business plan. He meets people of various dispositions, networks, and becomes a mysteriously interesting member of society. Things don't go as he originally plans, however, leading to a humbling denouement and any number of valuable life lessons.

This is a book that, for me at least, isn't about plot so much as as it is the many complexities inherent in human nature. Its cast of characters are lean and brilliantly written, and run the gamut of emotions from greed to ignorance to anger to understanding and forgiveness. Gogol's book is such a triumph because of his powers of description, how he details his characters through clever dialogue and realistic situations, and in the convincing way the plot moves forward. Everything is laid out on his chessboard just right, and the suitable amount of light and dark fall on everything in the story. Add to that the fact that this is a very faithful translation by the always reliable Pevear and Volokhonsky, maintaining Gogol's brisk pace, his masterful description, and his wry humor that presents itself when you least expect it. It's a book to reread, to take your time and chip away at, to ponder all day. The cumulative effect, as the book reaches its conclusion, is somewhat hampered by its questionable chunks of missing pages, making the reader feel scattered, but what is there is easy enough to tie together and not interrupt the pleasure of the book too much. This is a must for any fan of the Russian greats.
Reviews
Chichikov is one of the most well-sketched characters I've encountered in Russian literature. A wheeler-dealer who scours the countryside in a scheme to acquire land, wealth and power, this anti-hero spends the first part of the novel in shallowness, learning little and suffering self-pity at most. The satire is crystal-clear and at times hilarious.

As the story intensifies and builds, the protagonist exhibits more inner turmoil but barely grazes the surface of morality until Gogol set us up, at last, for a needed sequel. But Dead Souls is an unfinished novel--its sequel of redemption torched by its own author. This first installment is also structurally compromised; Gogol's manuscript is missing entire sections and lines, although translators Pevear and Volokonsky do an admirable job of bringing the story to life.

Dead Souls is a seminal classic, but it'll be a tough slog for many newcomers to 19th century Russian literature. The dialogue is wonderful, but at times the read feels uneven as the author's generally descriptive narrative ranges from passages of gorgeous aesthetics to drier, more difficult-to-follow excursions from the central storyline. Gogol's a great man of letters, and his death in the hands of a religious radical--a torturous situation as horrible as anything the author railed against--is all the more tragic in light of his trajectory. If only he'd left us more.

Reviews
Nikolai Gogol had a keen ability to write dark humor. While many of his short stories border on silliness, "Dead Souls" is a scathing rebuke of provincial life in his homeland. Though many reviewers focus on the humor, the writing is also intelligent and an enlightening perspective on life in this era.

To begin the story, Chichikov is dismissed from a position of comfort in civil service. Feeling cheating by the system, he searches for a way to make the system work for him. As a matter of speaking, he becomes a con-man. Beginning his pursuit, he enters the first town with intentions of becoming friendly with the locals. After being accepted, he turns to business and his unlikely scheme begins to unhatch. He begins by purchasing the "souls" of peasants who have died since the last census. Even though Chichikov will be taxed on the supposed serfs, he will be able to count them as his property and gain the reputation of a gentleman owner.

Buying "dead souls" becomes more difficult as people become curious of Chichikov's graft. While the plan seems staggered as he leaves the town, Chichikov's desires evolve as the story draw to its conclusion.

Though the passages which focus on the scenary slow the pace, "Dead Souls" read very quickly. The witty prose and absurd plot keep the reader's attention peaked. These qualities make "Dead Souls" stand as one of the great works of Russian literature.
Reviews
Older Russian literature, for the most part, has an odd way of alienating modern readers, likely because the prose tends to be dense, the plots thin. But what some of the most popular Russian writers such as Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy, and Gogol do better than maybe any other literary tradition is capture the mindsets and what drives a person to do what they do. "Dead Souls" is a wonderful example of what a social satire should be - it takes the Russian landowner class and the Russian peasantry and interweaves an insightful critique with a humorous tale of a man who tries to buy up dead souls so as to make it appear he is a more wealthy landowner than he really is. Chichikov, the protagonist, moves from estate to estate, party to party, in such an attractive way that everyone he meets wants to learn more about this mysterious man. Beyond the social satire, Gogol has a way of including a number of maxims and sayings without destroying the fabric of the story. I highly recommend this book but with a warning - it's not the kind of book you can speed through. It needs to be read slowly and enjoyed.
Reviews
Gogol himself claimed that Pushkin had told him that up until his own life, Gogol was the most successful in depicting the 'poshlost' of Russian social life, and this book certainly shows him to be correct. Not only with reference to the dead souls (serfs) that Chichikov purchased for his own gain, but also as a social commentary on post-Napoleonic Russia via the characters Gogol has developed in this self-described poema makes this a very insightful and enjoyable read.

Acute Kidney Injury (Contributions to Nephrology)

Acute Kidney Injury (Contributions to Nephrology)
Claudio Ronco,Rinaldo Bellomo,John A., M.D. Kellum | 2007-05-09 00:00:00 | S. Karger AG (Switzerland) | 463 | Internal Medicine
Acute kidney injury is defined as an abrupt change in serum creatinine and/or urine output, and a majority of patients admitted to the ICU have some evidence of the disorder. Unfortunately, treatment for this complex syndrome is as yet lacking and understanding is limited. An interdisciplinary panel of experts has contributed to this volume, illuminating some of the fundamental and complex aspects of the disorder ranging from pathophysiology to treatment, from emerging biomarkers to genetic polymorphisms. Other contributions focus on immunological issues or the many complications of acute kidney injury and co-morbid conditions encountered, covering the fundamentals as well as the latest developments. Moreover, important technical aspects of extracorporeal therapies including vascular access, anticoagulation or fluid composition are introduced, and different approaches to renal support from intermittent dialysis to continuous therapies and hybrid techniques are discussed. A description of advanced extracorporeal techniques of organ support and their role in the management of sepsis and acute kidney injury in the context of an overall strategy of multi-organ failure management concludes the discussions. This volume not only provides a practical and up-to-date summary of current knowledge and technology, but also imparts a fundamental understanding of the pathogenesis and likely future developments in this field. It also serves to challenge and re-examine the fundamental underlying assumptions we hold regarding critical illness in general and acute kidney injury in particular.

Antitrust: The Case for Repeal

Antitrust: The Case for Repeal
Dominick T Armentano | 2007-07-07 00:00:00 | Ludwig von Mises Institute | 112 | Antitrust
This tour de force rips the intellectual cover off antitrust regulation to reveal it as a bludgeon used by businesses against their competitors. Unlike many critics, Professor Armentano carries the logic of his analysis to the fullest possible extent: "My position on antitrust has never been ambiguous," he writes. "All of the antitrust laws and all of the enforcement agency authority should be summarily repealed. The antitrust apparatus cannot be reformed; it must be abolished."

Professor Armentano begins with the most rigorous and revealing account of the Microsoft antitrust battle to appear in print. He further discusses other recent cases, including Toys 'R' Us, Staples, and Intel, as well as many historical cases. He covers nearly every conceivable rationale for antitrust, including price fixing, predatory pricing, product tie-ins, vertical and horizontal mergers, and many more.

This is a crucially important work in our new era of antitrust enforcement. This 2nd edition is completely revised and includes a treatment of Murray Rothbard's contributions to the theory of monopoly and competition. It ends by arguing that antitrust is contrary to both free-market economic theory and the protection of property rights in a free society.
Reviews
This book is informative and enlightening. It was a good help in writing a paper for my economics class. I recommend it as good reading for any business student.
Reviews
For the length of this book (106 pages, sans index), the delivery was very concise and dense. The book is both layperson and student-friendly; the text has citations that direct a more thorough understanding of the book (including a good article by Thomas DiLorenzo concerning the Origins of Antitrust that can be had for free on mises.org), and also utilizes enough mainstream economic theory to allow students to cross-apply arguments to current economic studies.

Armentano delivers an acute, crisp take on the principles at the base of antitrust policies. He addresses widely-used assumptive errors underlying economic models used as justification for antitrust laws. And if you're wondering who benefits from antitrust: Over 90% of the cases, he explains, are begun by private companies against private companies. So much for benevolent government watching out for intellectually lackluster consumers.

Speaking of consumers, why is it that whenever antitrust advocates speak of that mystical class of individuals, inevitably they are caricatured as bereft of any sense concerning what to do with their own money? This is just one of the numerous fallacies underlying antitrust-advocates' arguments that Armentano addresses.

An excellent introduction to the basis of antitrust argumentation, with overviews of relevant court cases, and a good companion to courses in antitrust law or industrial organization.
Reviews
Armentano analyzes and lays waste to the fallacies underlying the standard Chicago school economic analysis of monopolies, and how it has been applied by courts interpreting the antitrust laws.

This book is short and easy to read, and it is an essential supplement for anyone trying to make sense of antitrust law and economics.
Reviews
Dr. Armentano's book is remarkable and indispensible. Since it it short, do not expect it to be an all-inclusive study of the entire past, present, and future of antitrust law. It is simple, straightforward logic that is often missing when analyzing complex legal problems - even from most economic work in the field.

Antitrust: The Case For Repeal looks closely at the Microsoft case and uses it almost allegorically to condemn the entire practice of antitrust law in the United States. He showcases the inherent contradictions, the arbitrary law, and the self-defeating nature of antitrust legislation. His scholarship is impeccable and the writing is smooth. This book should be a tremendous resource for any research done in the field and also excellent intellectual reading for anyone interested in a common-sense approach to antitrust.
Reviews
Before you waste your hype or start whining about Microsoft's case, please read this book right away, you will see how antitrust laws are in fact against you and especially your freedom of choice in a market that is supposed to be free.

You will see why the Microsoft antitrust case must be dismissed and why the US government abused its power against AT&T and others.

The Letters of Menakhem-Mendl, Sheyne-Sheyndl and Motl. the Cantor's Son

The Letters of Menakhem-Mendl, Sheyne-Sheyndl and Motl. the Cantor's Son
Sholem Aleichem | 2002-06-01 00:00:00 | Yale University Press | 256 | European
This volume presents an outstanding new translation of two favorite comic novels by the preeminent Yiddish writer Sholem Aleichem (1859-1916). The Letters of Menakhem-Mendl and Sheyne-Sheyndl portrays a tumultuous marriage through letters exchanged between the title character, an itinerant bumbler seeking his fortune in the cities of Russia before departing alone for the New World, and his scolding wife, who becomes increasingly fearful, jealous, and mystified. Motl, Peysi the Cantor's Son is the first-person narrative of a mischievous and keenly observant boy who emigrates with his family from Russia to America. The final third of the story takes place in New York, making this Sholem Aleichem's only major work to be set in the United States. Motl and Menakhem-Mendl are in one sense opposites-the one a clear-eyed child and the other a pathetically deluded adult. Yet both are ideal conveyors of the comic disparity of perception on which humor depends. If Motl sees more than do others around him, Menakhem-Mendl has an almost infinite capacity for seeing less. Sholem Aleichem endows each character with an individual comic voice to tell in his own way the story of the collapse of traditional Jewish life in modern industrial society as well as the journey to America, where a new chapter of Jewish history begins. This volume includes a biographical and critical introduction as well as a useful glossary for English-language readers.
Reviews
I've heard that Shalom Aleichem has a great verbal dexterity in the original Yiddish. I have no reason to doubt it, but I have to take it on faith. I also have no complaints about the translation. If the language is not as playful as, say, S.J. Perelman or better episodes of "Moonlighting," well, what do I expect, it's a translation.

These novels are not complete failures, but I did not get caught up in them at all, and they kept reminding me of better works. Menachem-Mendl and Motl's family's schemes are so transparently hare-brained and sometimes not quite above board that there was little suspense or sympathy from me. Think Angel from "The Rockford Files," but denser. The second half of "Motl" (in America) may be of some sociological interest, but it constantly reminded me of the far superior "The Rise of David Levinsky." If you like Shirley Temple movies, you may find this similarly charming.
Reviews
I enjoyed this translation of the Letters & Motl tremendously! Motl especially has stayed close to what I hope the original Yiddish serial is like. In any case, this translation is by far the better translation when you compare it to the one done by Aleichem's granddaughter, who 'cleaned' hers up much too much in English. Yiddish is a rolicking, (potentially) earthy language, & this edition has kept that spirit.

I'd love to see more new translations of Aleichem's works-- hopefully this is a trend that will keep going!

New Economy Excellence Series, New Economy Energy: Unleashing Knowledge for Competitive Advantage
Sultan Kermally | 2001-07-11 00:00:00 | Wiley | 256 | Economics
The aim of the series is a simple one - to help managers create and sustain competitive advantage in the Internet economy. The series pioneers a new generation of business books that take a step back from the evangelical hype surrounding the Web to provide a sound commercial analysis of the opportunities and pitfalls of the e-business environment. The question is no longer whether or why, but how?

Books which deal with e-business topics in isolation miss the point. The hub of the electronic world - the Internet - is primarily and enabling force. It cannot work miracles. The brightest sparks are still those with the best ideas, not the most venture capital or marketing spend. What these books demonstrate clearly is that the old ways of doing business are not redundant, and that application of sound, practical steps that combine both old and new models will go a long way towards ensuring continued business success.

Each title in the New Economy Excellence Series is clear-minded, accessible and aimed at bringing a critical business issue in the new economy into sharper focus. This series is the first of its kind to provide sound practical steps that busy executives can action immediately no matter where they are on the e-business ladder. As befits books concerned with a globalising world, these books take an international perspective. Read the front inside flap to see how you can benefit from New Economy Energy.

Constitutional Reform and Political Participation in the Gulf

Constitutional Reform and Political Participation in the Gulf
Abdulhadi Khalaf and Giacomo Luciani | 2008-04-15 00:00:00 | Gulf Research Center | 304 | Finances and Money
The debate on political reform in the Gulf states has intensified dramatically in recent years. However, discourse on the topic is usually couched in terms of authoritarianism vs. democratisation. However, a more appropriate angle from which to view it, argues this new book, is in terms of the evolution of Gulf constitutions and the widening of political participation. The contributors demonstrate that constitutional reforms have so far served the purpose of consolidating the absolute power of the rulers but have also allowed the progressive development of institutions whose representative character and influence on the policy-making process has been growing.

As a IT professional for 25+ years I was nice to see that I have been practicing the concepts put forth in this book without formally recognizing it. For those just entering this space pay close attention as a few misses can create challenges that a company might take years getting out of.
Reviews
This book is a great compendium of current technology and business issues around MDM and CDI, with a foreword from Aaron Zornes. It provides an expert view on business drivers, architectural approaches and implementation issues. It is worth mentioning the chapter on Vendors Landscape where the authors review current market players competitive advantages. Easy to read for both business and IT managers and it has very interesting appendixes with glossary included! The book any CIO and Business Executive should read to be aware of whats going on in the MDM field.

Plenty of companies are making money despite doing a subpar job at managing/accessing their data. But a new threat is compounding the negative effects of poor data management: Out of control volume!

According to IDC estimates, in 2007 for the first time, we'll see the amount of digital information generated surpass the storage capacity available. It's a huge wake-up call for businesses. It's no longer a nice extra to invest in technology that will help turn data into information assets, but a true business imperative.

Thanks to this book you have the bible on master data management (MDM) and customer data management (CDI) solutions. Done well, they have the potential to tap previously unrealized revenue streams and create a framework that can improve information accuracy, consistency and security to stem the rising tide on out of control data.
