Methods in Cell Physiology, Volume 2

Methods in Cell Physiology, Volume 2
David M. Prescott (Editor) | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | Academic Pr | 426 | Biology
Much of the information on experimental techniques in modern cell biology is scattered in a fragmentary fashion throughout the research literature. I n addition, the general practice of condensing Materials and
Methods sections of journal articles to the most abbreviated form has led to descriptions that are frequently inadequate guides to techniques. This volume is intended to bring together into one compilation, complete and
detailed treatments of a number of widely useful techniques which have not been published in full form elsewhere in the literature.

The Secret of the Saucers: How UFOs Work (Forgotten Books)

The Secret of the Saucers: How UFOs Work (Forgotten Books)
Orfeo M. Angelucci | 2008-01-12 00:00:00 | Forgotten Books | 168 | Occult
Book Description:

"This is one of the best contactee accounts of the 1950s. Mr. Angelucci's Secret of the Saucers is a memoir of a more innocent time, and a tale of spiritual growth. It was edited by Ray Palmer, the gray eminence behind FATE magazine, the publisher of the first flying saucer accounts, and the Shaver mythos before that. In fact, Angelucci's name doesn't appear on the title page, simply Palmer as editor. Angelucci is, strangely, only listed as a copyright holder.

The well-named 'Orfeo' (see Orpheus and his journey into the underworld) was, like Shaver, a regular guy, a swing-shift line worker at a Lockheed factory in southern California. On Friday, May 23, 1952, by this account, he was strangely drawn to a remote location in Griffith Park; actually not a bad place to land a UFO in Los Angeles. He was contacted by an alien entity named 'Neptune.' Later he is taken aboard a spaceship, gets to visit their paradisiacal home planet by exchanging bodies with Neptune, meets Jesus, and gets to see the end of the world (in 1986).

Angelucci (or Palmer?) does some seminal UFO myth-building here. There was a being named Lucifer who lived on a planet between Mars and Jupiter. His hubris led to the planet being shattered into the asteroid belt. Humans were imprisoned on Earth, to work off the karmic debt. There is a 'prime directive' which prevents the UFO builders from interfering in Earth's affairs. However, humanity's spiritual evolution is helped along by extraterrestrial, godlike entities such as Jesus. The contactee is instructed to spread the UFO builders' message to the world at large, and only a handful are picked from the multitudes. All of these themes have become incorporated in one form or another into various UFO belief systems.

There is a field guide to UFOs at the end with some fascinating details. The UFOs are grown as a single large crystal with all of the subsystems intact, and work on some kind of magnetic principle. They have capabilities such as tractor beams, cloaking devices, and inertial dampening; the concepts were so fresh in 1955 they didn't even have names yet. Some are small drones, used for surveillance. Others are huge motherships.

Among the highlights on earth are a description of the first ever UFO convention, and a speaking tour that goes horribly wrong. The book makes a brisk read (again, a hallmark of Palmer), and if you suspend disbelief, it works as science fiction as well." (Quote from sacred-texts.com)

The Bleeding Dusk

The Bleeding Dusk
Colleen Gleason | 2008-01-01 00:00:00 | Signet | 368 | Romance Novels
In all sincerity I found this to be an exciting and engaging read. As she has proven to do over the course of now three novels, Colleen Gleason balances the historical and romantic elements very well with the action and adventure of a story about a vampire hunter. With The Bleeding Dusk Colleen Gleason seems to lean even farther away from what I consider stereotypical in the romance genre and much more toward the style of books that are often shelved in the fantasy section of bookstores. As I have said before, this is in no way a comment meant to disparage the romance genre. What I am trying to communicate is that if the idea of reading a book shelved in the romance section of the bookstore turns you off, don't let that prejudice keep you away from this series. The romance is there, but Colleen weaves those threads into the story so well that you don't feel like you are reading a bodice-ripper. Make no mistake, there are a few spicy scenes in the book that one would expect from this genre, but Colleen writes those titillating scenes with such skill that they strike the necessary cord without being silly, obvious, or overdone. Those scenes are sensual, not sensational, if that makes any sense.

The Bleeding Dusk is a fantastic continuation of the Gardella Vampire Chronicles. Colleen Gleason certainly leaves you hungry for more at the end of The Bleeding Dusk and I am glad I don't have to wait an entire year to have my suspense be quenched. Well done!

Case Studies in Food Safety and Environmental Health (Integrating Safety and Environmental Knowledge Into Food Studies towards European Sustainable Development)

Case Studies in Food Safety and Environmental Health (Integrating Safety and Environmental Knowledge Into Food Studies towards European Sustainable Development)
Peter Ho,Maria Margarida Cortez Vieira | 2006-12-22 00:00:00 | Springer | 93 | Food Science

Case Studies in Food Safety and Environmental Health, the sixth volume of the ISEKI-Food book series, presents food safety concepts and issues in a practical and applied framework for use in the classroom.

The book is divided into three main sections:

  • microbial food safety
  • chemical residues and contaminants
  • risk assessment and food legislation

These sections can be used individually or together as a series to discuss a range of food safety issues. Section One covers specific food safety issues such as acrylamide, nitrate contamination, residual pesticides, Clostridium botulinum, and botulism. Section Two discusses the historical perspective of food safety issues. Section Three looks at food safety from the standpoint of the researcher: examining food safety issues at hand while figuring out how to approach their investigation. Each chapter has a summary of the issues discussed, objectives, and discussion questions focused on the major issues and other relevant factors.

The ISEKI-Food book series is a collection where various aspects of food safety and environmental issues are introduced and reviewed by scientists specializing in the field. In all of the books a special emphasis is placed on including case studies applicable to each specific topic. The books are intended for graduate students and senior level undergraduate students as well as professionals and researchers interested in food safety and environmental issues applicable to food safety.

"ISEKI-Food" is an acronym for "Integrating Safety and Environmental Knowledge Into Food Studies". Participants in the ISEKI-Food network, coordinated by Professor Cristina Silva at The Catholic University of Portugal, come from 29 countries in Europe and most of the institutes and universities involved with Food Science education at the university level in Europe are represented. Some international companies and non teaching institutions have also participated in the network. The main objectives of ISEKI-Food are to improve the harmonization of studies in food science and engineering in Europe and to develop and adapt food science curricula emphasizing the inclusion of safety and environmental topics.

Giving Death a Helping Hand: Physician-Assisted Suicide and Public Policy. An International Perspective (International Library of Ethics, Law, and the New Medicine)

Giving Death a Helping Hand: Physician-Assisted Suicide and Public Policy. An International Perspective (International Library of Ethics, Law, and the New Medicine)
Dieter Birnbacher,Edgar Dahl | 2008-02-05 00:00:00 | Springer | 160 | Suicide

If it comes to choosing between methods of last resort for severely suffering, physician-assisted suicide will probably prove more acceptable as a method of last resort than active euthanasia both to patients, to legislators and to the general public. From the perspective of patients, physician-assisted is a more unambiguous expression of the patient's autonomous will. From the legislator's perspective it seems less liable to misuse and abuse. And often the availability of assisted suicide, instead of shortening the life of a patient, has proved to prolong it. Public policy has begun to respond to this prospect. Notably in Switzerland and Germany, the attitudes of public bodies towards physician-assisted suicide are in a process of change, partly motivated by the wish to take the edge off the pressure for legalisation of active euthanasia.

The present volume focuses on public policy issues related to physician-assisted suicide. It offers a detailed analysis of the current legal standing and practice of physician-assisted suicide in various countries and discusses the ethical principles underlying its legal and professional regulation. In addition, it contains a number of personal narratives by professionals who have for many years been involved in end-of-life issues.

Windows 95 in a Nutshell: A Desktop Quick Reference (In a Nutshell (O'Reilly))

Windows 95 in a Nutshell: A Desktop Quick Reference (In a Nutshell (O'Reilly))
Troy Mott,Tim O'Reilly | 1998-06-01 00:00:00 | O'Reilly Media | 528 | Graphic Design
Windows 95 in a Nutshell is a comprehensive, compact reference that starts where most Windows 95 books leave off, systematically unveiling interesting and useful information for serious users of the operating system. The book contains:
  • A fast-paced introduction to the operating system for new users
  • Detailed documentation on almost every command and utility available with Windows 95
  • Extensive advice and documentation on system configuration via the Control Panel, system startup files, and the Registry
  • A detailed look at the Win95 architecture, getting you under the hood and showing you how the operating system really works
  • A detailed treatment of Internet access and configuration via Dial-Up Networking
  • A comprehensive "Task Index" cross-reference list, giving shorthand instructions on how to accomplish hundreds of useful tasks
This book follows the commonsense O'Reilly approach, cutting through the hype and giving practical details about Windows 95 that you can use every day. (Note: This book is not replaced by Windows 98 in a Nutshell. O'Reilly will be providing strong marketing support for both volumes.)
Nutshell books usually deal with textual systems, such as those that make up programming languages and command-line operating environments. But the authors of this guide do a good job of documenting the Windows 95 graphical interface in a similar format. O'Reilly and Mott tackle the main Windows 95 features, the Control Panel applets, Dial-Up Networking, and all the little applets that come with the operating system. Every switch and interface option receives attention. In addition, the authors explain all the Windows 95 shell commands, which many administrators prefer to use.

This book is not for newbies. Those who aren't extremely adept at using Windows 95 already--for example, those who haven't yet collided with the system's limitations in a quest to get the machine to do what they want--will find this book confusing. Accomplished power users or system administrators responsible for supporting Windows 95 computers will appreciate the level of detail this book provides. Advanced users will be grateful for the bug workarounds and other tips. --David Wall
Reviews
The other comments are dated about 1999/2000... I picked this book up back in the late 1990s, and have worn out that copy many times over. The usefulness of this particular "Nutshell" book is the setup - compared to later "WinX" nutshell books, this one seems to pack in more information (more useful?), and is very command/option oriented than later ones. Don't get me wrong - I loved WinXP in a nutshell, but how many words do you need to describe "point-click-and watch what happens...?"

This book still has some tidbits that hold constant through subsequent Windows editions. If you get it cheap, hold on to it. For any budding "In a Nutshell" book authors, get this copy and duplicate its formula. Guarantee it will be a best seller. Thank goodness for Tim O'Reilly & Company!!!
Reviews
I bought this book on the basis of O'Reilly's well-deserved reputation and the book's reviews here in amazon.com. Thanks for telling me about it!

I used to enjoy DOS but never really felt comfortable with Windows. Only the lack of applications for good old DOS and Win 3.1 dragged me kicking and screaming into Win 95, where I never wanted to be, and so I've actually taken up Linux, which is now my main desktop operating system.

Thanks to this book, I've begun to find Win 95 very interesting, even though Linux is still more exciting. I've been enjoying this book so much that I read it now at train stations and bus stops instead of that half-read Rushdie novel which took me a lot of effort to prise myself from last month.

Yes, this book points out a lot of Win 95 tricks that I didn't and couldn't be bothered to know existed. My friends know me as a Linux man. I can't wait to surprise them!
Reviews
It was refreshing to see a Windows 95 book that was (1) not too thick, and (2) not "For Dummies." There were 2 chapters I especially like: first, the section describing almost all of the commands for Windows 95, with command line switches! Of course most of us can't remember the switches that go with the commands. I also liked the section that explained the internals of Windows 95 (the 7 layers), because I was curious as to how Windows 95 was built, and now I have some idea.

My problem with this book (which is why I gave 4 stars) is that it has some typographical errors. To me, that's a major turnoff. (What can I say? I'm a perfectionist.) Despite this, I'm planning to buy this book (I first got it from the library), and I think anyone who knows how to use Windows 95 should get it.
Reviews
If you know what you're doing already then this book will help you do it better. I probably picked up 25 things I'd either forgotten or never knew with this book. O'Rielly's are the best of the bunch.
Reviews
I use this book absolutely every day, whether it be for doing cgi programming, javascript, html, or configuring a server. I wouldn't recommend the deluxe edition however, as it's just plain silly to read books on CDs!

Managing Risk and Creating Value With Microfinance

Managing Risk and Creating Value With Microfinance
Mike Goldberg,Eric Palladini | 2010-04-21 00:00:00 | World Bank Publications | 136 | Finance

Managing Risk and Creating Value with Microfinance brings together the latest information on microfinance institutional sustainability from leading international experts and microfinance practitioners in four Latin American countries. Each chapter focuses one topic: risk management; good governance; interest rates; microinsurance; housing microfinance; microleasing; disaster preparedness; or new technologies.

The papers in the book are the result of a series of meetings financed by the United Kingdom s Department for International Development and supported by the World Bank s Global Development Learning Network. The Bank engaged practitioners in these four countries in response to a movement in some South American governments to impose policies and practices that would, in the long run, reduce the microfinance institutions (MFIs ) sustainability. The meetings were designed to strengthen MFIs by disseminating innovative approaches in the above eight areas, promoting a South-South dialogue, encouraging greater ties between these MFIs, and highlighting the Bank s ability to mobilize international experts and local practitioners. The discussions took place between 2006 and 2008.

Managing Risk and Creating Value with Microfinance covers risk management topics such as risk management systems, good governance, interest rates, and microinsurance. The authors present information on new product development and efficient delivery methodologies including housing microfinance, microleasing, disaster preparedness, and new technologies.

Managing Risk and Creating Value with Microfinance is intended for MFI board members, managers, and staff, students and professors of microfinance, and government regulators and supervisors.

Reviews
Before moving to Finland for graduate school, I purchased Terttu Leney's TEACH YOURSELF FINNISH. Leney's is the most widely available Finnish textbook in the English-speaking world, and it did equip me with enough basic Finnish to comfortably settle into life in Finland. However, the book is not perfect, and in spite of its strengths it pales in many respects to other, more obscure textbooks.

Leney's book generally follows the contemporary Teach Yourself format: dialogues are followed by vocabulary (first phrase-for-phrase glosses, then individual new words), then come exercises, and finally at the end of each lesson is a dialogue spoken more quickly in more authentic language that the student is challenged to at least get the gist of. Each lesson is dedicated to a specific subject, such as shopping, going to the doctor, or (towards the end) talking about history and politics. There are Finnish-English and English-Finnish vocabularies and, something which all other TY volumes should emulate, some advice on where to go next (books, websites, radio, etc.).

While things like asking directions is a typical topic in beginner's textbook, I rather disagree with Leney's giving it so much attention. The lost tourist asking directions in limited Finnish is likely just going to be answered in English, Finnish people being so at ease with talking to foreigns in it. Rather, the challenge for people new to Finland is feeling at ease with a group of native speakers, such as classmates or coworkers, and so starting off with asking directions isn't so efficient, nor is the early emphasis on talking to bank tellers.

The CDs are absolutely essential. With a sound system so different from English, Finnish is not a language that can be learnt well just off the page. Even if you have a couple of Finnish friends, chances are they couldn't enunciate like the folks on the CDs. Teach Yourself CDs vary widely in quality, but these are very good, with a large cast of voice actors so you just used to different voices, and a good mix of clear and "street" enunciation.

What's wrong with Leney's course? Well, as a one-volume course its exercises are woefully insufficient. Agglutinating languages need much more drill than, say, Spanish or Italian, but the exercises here are few and train the student more to utter stock phrases than to internalize the huge amount of endings that conversational Finnish requires. It would have been better if Teach Yourself had commissioned a course from Leney in two volumes, a beginner's and an intermediate, which would have provided space for much more drill. Teach Yourself has done this for some languages, but regrettably not "smaller" ones.

If you want to learn Finnish, by all means acquire TEACH YOURSELF FINNISH. However, at the same time you need to get a few other books. In my Finnish for foreigners courses at University of Helsinki, the assigned textbooks were Leena Silfverberg's SUOMEN KIELEN ALKEISOPPIKIRJA and SUOMEN KIELEN JATKO-OPPIKIRJA (both published by Finn Lectura). While it might be a bit of work ordering those, and much in them is designed for classroom use, they abound in just the type of rigorous exercises that Leney's course lacks. Leela White's From Start to Finnish (Finn Lectura, 2003) is also a useful textbook, and is available though this very site.

This is not a bad course. However, like breakfast cereal that advertisements claim to be part of a balanced breakfast showing it in photos alongside bread and fruit, Terttu Leney's TEACH YOURSELF FINNISH is but one element towards profiency in Finnish.

The Quiet Revolutionaries: Seeking Justice in Guatemala

The Quiet Revolutionaries: Seeking Justice in Guatemala
Frank M. Afflitto,Paul Jesilow | 2007-09-01 00:00:00 | University of Texas Press | 218 | Guatemala
The last three decades of the twentieth century brought relentless waves of death squads, political kidnappings, and other traumas to the people of Guatemala. Many people fled the country to escape the violence. Yet, at the same moment, a popular movement for justice brought together unlikely bands of behind-the-scenes heroes, blurring ethnic, geographic, and even class lines. "The Quiet Revolutionaries" is drawn from interviews conducted by Frank Afflitto in the early 1990s with more than eighty survivors of the state-sanctioned violence. Gathered under frequently life-threatening circumstances, the observations and recollections of these inspiring men and women form a unique perspective on collective efforts to produce change in politics, law, and public consciousness. Examined from a variety of perspectives, from sociological to historical, their stories form a rich ethnography. While it is still too soon to tell whether stable, long-term democracy will prevail in Guatemala, the successes of these fascinating individuals provide a unique understanding of revolutionary resistance.

Semilinear Schrodinger Equations (Courant Lecture Notes)

Semilinear Schrodinger Equations (Courant Lecture Notes)
Thierry Cazenave | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | Courant Institute of Mathemetical Sciences | 323 | Mathematics
The nonlinear Schrödinger equation has received a great deal of attention from mathematicians, particularly because of its applications to nonlinear optics. It is also a good model dispersive equation, since it is often technically simpler than other dispersive equations, such as the wave or the Korteweg-de Vries equation. From the mathematical point of view, Schrödinger's equation is a delicate problem, possessing a mixture of the properties of parabolic and elliptic equations. Useful tools in studying the nonlinear Schrödinger equation are energy and Strichartz's estimates.

This book presents various mathematical aspects of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. It studies both problems of local nature (local existence of solutions, uniqueness, regularity, smoothing effect) and problems of global nature (finite-time blowup, global existence, asymptotic behavior of solutions). In principle, the methods presented apply to a large class of dispersive semilinear equations. The first chapter recalls basic notions of functional analysis (Fourier transform, Sobolev spaces, etc.). Otherwise, the book is mostly self-contained.

Sandra Lee McKay and Nancy H. Hornberger | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 496 | Languages (Other)
This book provides an introduction to the field of sociolinguistics for second and foreign language teachers. Chapters cover the basic areas of sociolinguistics that have a bearing on language teaching, including regional and social variations in dialects, language and gender, World Englishes, and intercultural communication. Each chapter has been specially written for this collection by an individual who has done extensive research on the topic explored. For each topic there is an overview of central terms and issues, and a discussion of implications for the language classroom. This is the first introductory text to address explicitly the pedagogical implications of current theory and research in sociolinguistics. The book will also be of interest to any teachers with students from linguistically diverse backgrounds.

The Management System Auditor's Handbook

The Management System Auditor's Handbook
Joe Kausek | 2006-01-01 00:00:00 | ASQ Quality Press | 432 | Management
Meant for both new and experienced auditors, The Management System Auditor's Handbook provides a detailed and structured examination of the audit process. It seeks to address the whys of auditing, as well as the whats and the how tos. Extensive focus is provided on auditing for effectiveness, in addition to conformance. Author Joe Kausek explains how to use your audit program to drive continual improvement and alignment throughout the organization through the identification of best practices and waste. A special chapter is devoted to the use of the internal audit program to verify deployment of the company’s strategic plan or Balanced Scorecard. Unlike other audit books on the market, this handbook seeks to give the auditor sufficient understanding of the intent, techniques, and specific strategies for auditing, allowing for the development of an audit program that is uniquely fitted to the auditor’s industry, processes, and company culture. While many of the fundamental concepts of auditing apply to any management system audit, separate chapters have been devoted to the unique aspects of quality, environmental and health and safety management system audits. Standards addressed include ISO 9001:2000, ISO/TS 16949:2002, ISO 14001, and OHSAS 18001, as well as insight on performing combined audits of these standards. Included on the accompanying CD-ROM are comprehensive electronic checklists that can be used to plan and guide the auditor in the evaluation of both the conformance and effectiveness of the management system to the corresponding standard’s requirements. These checklists, unique in both style and format, provide not only the questions to ask, but also the strategies and techniques for evaluating the auditee’s response. The checklists are an invaluable tool for both new and experienced auditors alike, and can be easily customized for the reader’ organization and industry

Working World: Careers in International Education, Exchange, and Development

Working World: Careers in International Education, Exchange, and Development
Sherry Lee Mueller,Mark Overmann | 2008-10-15 00:00:00 | Georgetown University Press | 246 | Job Hunting
Now a finalist in the careers section of the Foreword Awards!

Are you looking for a career with professional rewards and personal satisfaction? Perhaps you'd like to find meaningful employment in the field of international relations? Working World is the perfect resource for making sound career choices, and is particularly valuable for those interested in a career in international education, exchange, and development.

Sherry Mueller, head of a large nonprofit organization with an international focus, and Mark Overmann, a young professional on his way up, serve as spirited guidance counselors and offer valuable insight on launching a career, not just landing a job. The two authors--representing contrasting personalities, levels of experience, and different generations--engage in an entertaining dialogue designed to highlight alternative approaches to the same destination: making a difference in the world.

With a rich mix of anecdotes and advice, the two authors present their individual perspectives on career development: identifying your cause, the art of networking, the value of mentors, and careers as "continuous journeys." Mueller and Overmann push job seekers to challenge assumptions about what it means to pursue a career in international relations and to recognize that the path to career success is rarely straight.

To help the job seeker chart the best course, Working World provides specific resources including annotated lists of selected organizations, websites, and further reading. Profiles of twelve professionals, from promising young associates to presidents and CEOs, illustrate the book's main topics. Each professional provides insight into his or her career choices, distills lessons learned, and offers practical advice about building a career in international affairs. All of these resources were chosen specifically to help job seekers map the next steps toward the internship, job, or other opportunity that will give shape to the career they envision.
Reviews
As a long-time foreign language educator and someone who has spent numerous years in study abroad and recently in international education, I recommend this book to students (and their advisors) seeking careers after graduation that build on their study abroad and foreign languages experiences and curricula. With comprehensive lists of sources and outstanding organization by field, as well as an introductory chapter to help the reader reflect on her needs and wants, anyone can get started investigating and networking to work in the world. Indispensable in our global society.
Reviews
I highly recommend this resource. This is not a guide to "how to get a job", but rather an engaging discussion of "how to build a career". Although the focus is on international exchange, development, etc. -- the concepts are broadly applicable to most career journeys.
Reviews
Reading this book led me to meet incredible people. Going to networking events, voluntering and finding mentors seemed more real. I found some websites and print that helped to figure out what I really want to do in life :)
Reviews
For any college aged student with aspirations of studying or working abroad, Working World is a must read. I especially found the viewpoint of the young professional helpful and instantly relatable.
Reviews
Once I was a lost young soul living in Washington, DC who knew that I wanted to use my college degree. I knew that I wanted to perform some service for others and work somewhere with a global reach. Basically, I wanted to work in a in a non-profit in the international field.

Sounds easy, but where to start? And how to follow through and make my goal a reality? I won't go into the answers for you because this book takes care of all of that for me. I highly recommend that anyone interested in working in the international field (not only non-profits like me) take a good look at this book. It will help guide your way.

...I've been able to use this book as an Elements 5 special fx guide with little fuss. I would be considered a novice Photoshop user but am probably intermediate in my understanding of how to use software in general. I can usually figure out how things work. So this book would be helpful to others like me, but may frustrate those who haven't been whacking around on a computer for quite so long.
Reviews
At first glance I did not think much of this book but after reading it and following the projects I learn so much from it. I had been using Elements for over a year and was very comfortable with it but after reading this book I learned so many new techniques and ideas that makes it more enjoyable and easier to work with Elements. The instructions are clear and easy to follow (you have to know the basics of Elements though. Would not recommend it for a total beginner). The book comes with a CD with all the project images as well as some royalty-free images you can use in your own projects. I highly recommend this book for those who have been using Elements for a while but want to take their skills to the next level.

Reviews
The book has good step by step directions. I did the first project Crop and Contrast. It helped my learn what the icons do, so for a start everything is okay. Some of the projects required time, which is also not a problem. I will get to them sooner or later. But I'm wondering if I need a hardware upgrade. My computer only has a read/write CD device, NOT a DVD, so I get an error when I load the DVD. I have a lot of my own pictures that I can work on, so I really don't need the extra pictures from the DVD. But I'm wondering if some controls/enhancements are loaded from the DVD, because I couldn't get the 'Print Preview' meun that is shown on page 68. I got other meuns, and tried other options, but I coldn't find what is shown on page 68. I know that the print drivers are different, because I have an Epson R800 printer. And, I understand what they are saying for that issue in the book. I will keep the book and look at other customers comments to see if other problems come up. I understand that programming software and writing a book sometimes don't match.
Reviews
I agree with previous reviewers that there were some errors in instructions and file names, etc., but for me it was more than balanced out by the useful information in the text. I have been playing with PSE5 for months and had no idea about much of its capacity for editing photos, creating composites, etc.

I very much enjoyed watching the included videos and trying the projects. If you enjoyed this book you would probably also enjoy the podcast Photoshop Elements Killer Tips from Photoshop Users Newsletter.

The Teacher's Big Book of Graphic Organizers

The Teacher's Big Book of Graphic Organizers
Katherine S. McKnight | 2010-01-01 00:00:00 | | 0 | Education
I am a secondary social studies education professor that has spent the last decade teaching, research, and working in low performing city high schools. Over that time, I don't know how much time I've spent "reinventing the wheel," either trying to imagine a good graphic organizer, recreating one I had seen a hard copy of, or searching the internet for good quality adaptable version. But the "Big Book" brings together so many good organizers, collects them into chapters by their best function, and offers easily reproducible formats. This book has already found a spot in my courses, both for my own use as well as a resource for my pre-service candidates. I highly recommend this book for all middle an high school teachers as well as teacher educators.

Does the urbanizations long history present identifiable regularities through time and space? Are there long run trends in the development process? In the complex evolution of human societies are there other determining factors than political decisions, statesmen, wars, economic crises, religions, races, cultures, languages, and sociological values? Is the geographical space a simple setting or is it a major element of the urban world evolution? Those are some fundamental questions this book addresses in an original way that mixes historical facts, a world scope, an encyclopaedic culture, reflections, and space-economic theory. From Jericho to London, Sao Paulo, Los Angeles, Johannesburg, Shanghai and Tokyo, it reconstitutes the fascinating journey of the urban evolutions.

Demystifying Switching Power Supplies

Demystifying Switching Power Supplies
Raymond A. Mack | 2005-01-01 00:00:00 | Newnes | 344 | Electrical Engineering
This book is a crash course in the fundamental theory, concepts, and terminology of switching power supplies. It is designed to quickly prepare engineers to make key decisions about power supplies for their projects.

Intended for readers who need to quickly understand the key points of switching power supplies, this book covers the 20% of the topic that engineers use, 80% of the time.

Unlike existing switching power supply books that deal strictly with design issues, this book also recognizes the growing importance of "off-the-shelf" commercial switching power supplies, giving readers the background necessary to select the right commercial supply.

This book covers the core essentials of power supply theory and design while keeping mathematics to the absolute minimum necessary. Special attention is given to the selection of appropriate components, such as inductors and transformers, to ensure safe and reliable operation. Engineers, whose main design responsibilities are in other areas, will better understand the strengths and weaknesses of switching power supplies and whether such supplies are appropriate for their projects. They will be able to give more meaningful design requirements and specifications to those who design switching power supplies.

* Discusses both AC line supplies and DC-DC inverters.
* Covers the main switching power supply designs, including flyback, forward conversion, bridge, buch, boost, and boost/buck topologies.
* Design examples include a 220 volt offline switching power supply and a 110 volt uninterruptible supply.

Review

"Mack takes you from the basics (v=Ldi/dt, plus buck, boost, inverting boost, buck-boost, and other supply circuit topologies) on through the details of passive component selection and semiconductor selection. Of particular note are his treatment of control circuits and their effect on ripple levels and electromagnetic compatibility. He provides a step-by-step test sequence for evaluating power-supply response using a variable load, an oscilloscope, and function generator. Mack concludes with two solid examples: a true sine-wave inverter uninterruptible power supply and a personal-computer power supply."

Clinical Update on Adult and Pediatric Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor, An Issue of Hematology/Oncology Clinics (The Clinics: Internal Medicine)

Clinical Update on Adult and Pediatric Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor, An Issue of Hematology/Oncology Clinics (The Clinics: Internal Medicine)
Jonathan C. Trent MD PhD,Shreyaskumar Patel MD | 2009-03-23 00:00:00 | Saunders | 240 | Internal Medicine
Most doctors believe gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) start in special cells found in the wall of the GI tract, called the interstitial cells of Cajal (ICCs), or in very early cells that can develop into ICCs. ICCs are part of the autonomic nervous system, which sends signals to the GI tract. Some have called these cells the "pacemakers" of the GI tract because the nerve signals they send cause muscles of the digestive organs to contract, which helps to move food and liquid through the GI tract. This issue is an important one because GISTs are rare and are quite different in their outlook for survival and their treatment than other gastrointestinal tumors. For these reasons, oncologists need to figure out whether a patient has a GIST, an adenoma, an adenocarcinoma, a neuroendocrine cancer, some other type of tumor, or a non-cancerous condition. By presenting state-of-the-art information on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of GISTs, this issue serves as an important guide to oncologists as they work with patients to make make informed decisions about treatment options.

Unknown Boundaries: Exploring Human Evolutionary Studies

Unknown Boundaries: Exploring Human Evolutionary Studies
R. A. Foley | 2006-09-04 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 46 | Social Sciences
The last twenty years have seen a resurgence of interest in human evolution in many aspects. A distinction can be made between 'narrow' (general acceptance that human evolution occurred, historically) and 'broad' (evolutionary ideas that stretch much further into all aspects of humanity, past and present) human evolution. The broad perspective is beginning to make its presence felt, for example, through the developments in evolutionary genetics, evolutionary psychology and behavioural ecology. There must, therefore, be, among the variety of human adaptations, natures and behaviours, phenomena which are not susceptible to an evolutionary analysis, which are beyond the bounds of evolution. The problem is, though, that we do not really know where that boundary lies. Here, the limits of human evolution are explored, using two approaches - first, finding where humans 'fit' the expectations of evolutionary principles; and second, applying evolutionary methods to particular human contexts, whilst looking for an evolutionary signal.

Dynamical Processes on Complex Networks

Dynamical Processes on Complex Networks
Alain Barrat, Marc Barthelemy, Alessandro Vespignani | 2008-01-01 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press; 1 edition | 368 | Computer Science
The availability of large data sets have allowed researchers to uncover complex properties such as large scale fluctuations and heterogeneities in many networks which have lead to the breakdown of standard theoretical frameworks and models. Until recently these systems were considered as haphazard sets of points and connections. Recent advances have generated a vigorous research effort in understanding the effect of complex connectivity patterns on dynamical phenomena. For example, a vast number of everyday systems, from the brain to ecosystems, power grids and the Internet, can be represented as large complex networks. This new and recent account presents a comprehensive explanation of these effects.

Crusader Castles of the Teutonic Knights (1): The Red Brick Castles of Prussia 1230-1466

Crusader Castles of the Teutonic Knights (1): The Red Brick Castles of Prussia 1230-1466
S.R. Turnbull, Peter Dennis | 2003-01-01 00:00:00 | | 64 | History
The Teutonic Knights were the most warlike of the religious orders, and this is reflected in the architecture they left behind. The Teutonic memorials are the magnificent castles they built as a result of their conquest of Prussia. They were all built of brick, and raised during a period of less than a century and a half between 1230 and 1380. Many of these dramatic fortresses still exist today in what is now Poland, and provide a unique example of an architectural style that is both well defined and very closely reflects the nature of the men who created it. This book details the history of these spectacular fortresses from their inception through to their eventual decline and fall.

About the Author

The Rational Project Manager: A Thinking Team's Guide to Getting Work Done

The Rational Project Manager: A Thinking Team's Guide to Getting Work Done
A. Longman,Jim Mullins | 2005-04-15 00:00:00 | Wiley | 240 | Management
This comprehensive exploration of the project management process presents the tools, steps, and processes of project management and uncovers the critical thinking -- the why -- vital to project management excellence. Incorporating Kepner-Tregoe?s renowned and effective problem-solving and decision-making processes, the book guides you through the core activities of project management?planning, solving problems, making decisions, and assessing risk. It positions projects within an organization?s "performance environment," an understanding of which is essential for effective team performance and alignment. Offering a combination of overarching insights into organizational dynamics, as well as specific processes and practices for effective management, this is a resource no project leader -- and no project team member -- should be without.
Reviews
I am mad at being misled into purchasing this book! Why? 1) It provides bad PM Guidance. 2) Its promotional notes are misleading.

1) Bad PM Guidance: This short (and often repetitive) book uses one overriding project example throughout to illustrate its points--an office move for an organization. At the book's outset, the project team learns it has to complete its project within three months and under $170k. From there the book tells the reader that the project team then starts to define the project scope and estimate the work. Huh??? The book has assigned a project with its duration and cost budget determined BEFORE the project team has estimated what it is going to take? New PM's, if you follow this path start looking for a new career. What if there aren't enough staff to do the work in three months? Ever? What if there are no movers able to work within your $170k budget? (The authors better not plead that this defective example is constrained by length of the book. They're the ones who wrote and packaged this `book' to be so very brief. It looks like it was composed over a long weekend. A little more time developing a RESPONSIBLE book could have easily avoided this egregious advice.)

2) Misleading Promotional Notes: Inside jacket reads, "...offers a unique concentration on the logic and thought processes necessary for successful project completion." Notwithstanding the overriding flaw cited in #1, there are no UNIQUE logic and thought processes. No, it doesn't. This is very basic PM stuff here, e.g. seek out expert advice, get buy-in from many stakeholders. Right. Thanks a lot. And the endorsements on its back cover from corporate executives, what book are they referencing? These CXO's can't really be impressed with this half baked prose. Rather, their endorsements must be just quid-pro-quo's for past or future endorsements for their books.

Reviews
I must say that this book is indeed refreshing for me, especially after years of re-applying and re-understanding Kepner-Tregoe's methodologies in Project Management (PM), as well as, Problem-Solving & Decision Making (PSDM). For those who have undergone Kepner-Tregoe's workshops in PM and PSDM, this book together with "The New Rational Manager" are essential "re-iterative" references for anyone embarking on improving their PM and PSDM knowledge and experiences. These books are undoubtedly important to have on your bookshelf in the workplace that can be referred to over and over again.
Reviews
I am now retired, but I wish that during my 27-year career as a university librarian I had had a guide like The Rational Project Manager to see me through the many complex projects I was responsible for carrying out. When moving special collections or setting up a preservation lab, my team and I would have benefited enormously from having a clear, easy to follow process for managing important projects.

User review
Good for learning the important pieces
I recommend this book to experienced developers, although the topics are discussed clearly enough that a patient novice developer will gain much. Because the book assumes the reader has knowledge of basic web technologies, those with a background in earlier versions of ASP.NET or other web development platforms will get the most out of it.

The approach the author took was to give the reader the most pertinent information to bring him or her up to speed quickly. Only the most useful information is presented--which is why the book contains the word `core` in the title rather than `complete.` For example, when presenting a new control to the reader, the author discusses only the most-used features of the control. Often, he will mention other, less-used features so the reader knows they are available, but will not provide examples or provide much detail over these non-core features. If you are looking for an exhaustive reference of all the features of ASP.NET 2.0, this is not the book for you. However, if you are looking to learn ASP.NET 2.0, this book will cover 90% or so of the features you will likely use for any project.

The typical presentation of an aspect of ASP.NET 2.0 in this book is to provide a brief description, a screenshot or two, and an explanation of what kind of situations are appropriate for its use. Most items also include example code, with additional screenshots. I especially appreciated that the examples were simple, but clearly demonstrated the use of the item they were explaining. The code for the examples was presented in its entirety, but use of bold text on the pieces being demonstrated made the examples very understandable and helped me go through them more quickly than the typical code example. Also the use of labeling in the screenshots made it easy to see the results of what each code example was doing.

Overall, this was a very efficient way to quickly learn about each feature of ASP.NET 2.0. The book was a surprisingly fast read for a technical manual. Right at the point where I became bogged down with too much detailed information about controls, data sources, etc, the author took a step back and began discussing higher-level topics such as contemporary software design and the appropriate use of layers or tiers when designing a web application. Although I have had experience designing multi-layered or tiered web applications, this higher-level discussion was nice because all the details of ASP.NET 2.0 were very fresh in my mind. I was able to think about application design in a new light now that I understood the capabilities of ASP.NET 2.0.

The book's last few chapters step away from the web applications themselves and discuss the `other` things pertaining to ASP.NET 2.0, such as web services, security within web applications, and deployment of applications. These are useful in that they give a slightly more complete set of information on developing internet applications with ASP.NET 2.0.

Summary -

If you are looking for a way to quickly get up to speed in ASP.NET 2.0, without getting bogged down in too many details, I highly recommend this book.

User review
Not a classic ASP.NET 2.0 intro book
Read the book from start to the end. Not to be harsh, this is not a good book for the beginners, nor for experienced users. For beginners, the book doesn't explain some of the topic clearly, such as Page Life cycle. The way the book explain this topic might scare readers away from learning ASP.NET; for medium level programmers, this book doesn't touch any of the advanced topic, such as building custom controls. Also for the amount of knowledge covered in the book, the size should be reduced to 500 pages. If you want to learn ASP.NET, Beginning ASP.NET 2.0, Pro ASP.NET 2.0, and ASP.NET 2.0 Website Programming: Problem-Design-Solution are the three definitive books.
