Pirates of the Digital Millennium: How the Intellectual Property Wars Damage Our Personal Freedoms, Our Jobs, and the World Economy

Pirates of the Digital Millennium: How the Intellectual Property Wars Damage Our Personal Freedoms, Our Jobs, and the World Economy
John Gantz,Jack B. Rochester | 2004-09-30 00:00:00 | FT Press | 320 | Management Science

Digital piracy. It's a global war -- and it's just begun. Pirates of the Digital Millennium chronicles that war. All of it: media conglomerates vs. teenagers, tech companies vs. content providers, artists battling artists, nations vs. nations, law enforcement vs. organized crime. John Gantz and Jack Rochester cover every side and all the implications. Economics. Law. Ethics. Culture. The players. And above all, the realities -- including the exclusive new findings of a 57-country digital piracy research project. The media universe is shaking to its very foundations. This book helps you make sense of what's happening -- and what's next.

Reviews
Gantz and Rochester have created a thorough investigation of the war over the ownership of intellectual property. They draw the reader in with common scenarios of digital piracy and then explain the history of copyright protection and the current debate over ownership of digital media. Moral and legal implications of illegal downloading are addressed as the authors reveal the extensive ripple effect downloading has on the world economy. The authors present complex theories and research in an accessible and entertaining manner. While their arguments may fall on deaf ears of hardcore downloaders, their theories are an essential read for anyone with an open mind to truly understand the impact of digital piracy.
Reviews
"Pirates" is well writen, I would say exhaustively researched, and insightful. Considering the material, it is an "easy" read. It had me asking questons about my own stance on the limits of copyright laws etc. In 2008, it is still a current source. >Sam
Reviews
Pirates delivers a strong opinion on a very controversial subject. There is so much left unanswered in terms of digital piracy that Gantz and Rochester approach without biasing. It is well-written and packed full of various forms of information and stands, from legal to moral to opinion.
Reviews
"Digital piracy is an important issue which needs to be addressed in this age of technological revolution. This book by Gantz and Rochester highlights this point very well. You will learn everything about piracy and how it damages the world at large. I learnt a new word while reading this book "intellectual property", which is very important to the artists and needs to be protected.

This book covers it all. Every side, all its implications and the economics. It talks about copyright laws around the world.

Gantz and Rochester divide their analysis into ten easy-to-read chapters, with interesting quotes at the beginning of each chapter. It is explicitly written and has some diagramatic illustrations that make it interesting.

This book is a must for all those interested in knowing about digital piracy and its implications.
Reviews
"Pirates" presents an honest and open look at not only the impact illegal downloading has on our society, but also how rampant it has become. The book highlights the moral dilemma for some (it seems it's not so much of a dilemma for most), and discuss what is taking place domestically and internationally to try and halt some of the copyright violations that are taking place. Authors Gantz and Rochester take us through the process of producing entertainment, specifically focusing on the cost breakdown, and discuss why CDs cost $17 when it only takes pennies to actually make a CD. I think they make solid arguments, specifically when discussing the cooperation that must take place between producers and consumers. Producers must begin to understand that consumers don't want a packaged bulk unit, they want a personalized playlist, CD and they want to listen/view their entertainment when they want! Companies such as iTunes have begun to show that people are willing to negotiate, but they are tired of paying the same old prices and getting the same old product.

Good easy read that puts the piracy in perspective. Very readable book which will hopefully give people a better understanding as to what is taking place on a global scale.

An introduction to differentiable manifolds and Riemannian geometry (2nd Ed), Volume 120, Second Edition (Pure and Applied Mathematics)

An introduction to differentiable manifolds and Riemannian geometry (2nd Ed), Volume 120, Second Edition (Pure and Applied Mathematics)
Author Unknown | 1986-05-12 00:00:00 | Academic Press | 430 | Mathematics
The second edition of this text has sold over 6,000 copies since publication in 1986 and this revision will make it even more useful. This is the only book available that is approachable by "beginners" in this subject. It has become an essential introduction to the subject for mathematics students, engineers, physicists, and economists who need to learn how to apply these vital methods. It is also the only book that thoroughly reviews certain areas of advanced calculus that are necessary to understand the subject.

Line and surface integrals
Divergence and curl of vector fields
Reviews
Great introductory differential geometry text! I used this book to help me pass my qualifying exam. Yay Boothby!
Reviews
This book is an wonderful introduction to Differential Geometry for the serious student of mathematics. However, it is not aimed at engineers, physicists or even applied mathaticians.

The author assumes the reader has an extensive knowledge of abstract algebra and at least one course in analysis. Likewise, he has chosen to emphasis applications of the subject to Lie Groups, homotopy theory, and group actions, rather than the physical applications that applied mathematicians are looking for. But, for the student of pure mathematics, this text is a great starting point into the rich world of differential geometry.

Also, while this book is an introduction and requires no previous knowledge of the subject, it covers enough ground to be followed up by such topics as the Gauss-Bonnet Theorem, the Cartan-Hadamard Theorem, Bonnet's Theorem, or Morse Theory.
Reviews
One day, accountants and soldiers may take an interest in differential geometry. If and when such a day comes to pass, this book will have a role to play. Until then, engineers, physicists and mathematicians alike have better alternatives, such as the inspiring texts, with complementary qualities, by Burke, "Applied Differential Geometry"; by do Carmo, "Riemannian Geometry", or by Spivak, "A Comprehensive Introduction to Differential Geometry".

Even more advanced books such as Lang's or Petersen's are more readable: in them the extra formalism brings the reward of more powerful results. Here the retentive attention to the trees at the expense of the forest is merely a barrier to entry for the uninitiated. This text's popularity in some areas of engineering must have played a role in the slow acceptance of Riemannian geometric methods.

Reviews
My first course on manifolds was based on this book, and I believe that it is the best introduction to the subject (especially for beginners). I thoroughly enjoyed it! I should also recommend Conlon's 'Differentiable Manifolds' (2ed, Birkhauser), as it is the perfect follow-up to Boothby. --A
Reviews
This book is a careful treatment of the subjects in the title. It is an introduction, but it manages to cover quite a bit of ground with lots of examples to illustrate. One of it's distinguishing points is the way in which the concrete, coordinate based calculations are emphasized even while usually presenting the more abstract, coordinate free approach as well.

The book does a good job at stimulating those studying it to develop intuition. I found the book helpful when I was first studying the subject.

Cardiology of the Horse

Cardiology of the Horse
Celia Marr BVMS MVM PhD MRCVS,Mark Bowen BVetMed PhD CertEM(IntMed) MRCVS | 2010-12-06 00:00:00 | Saunders Ltd. | 320 | Cardiology
"Cardiology of the Horse" is a multi-author, contemporary reference on equine cardiology. The first section reviews the physiology, pathophysiology and pharmacology of the equine cardiovascular system. The second section describes diagnostic methods from basic to specialist examination skills and the third section addresses the investigation and management of common clinical problems using a problem-orientated approach. It is suitable for students, general and specialist practitioners and teachers.
Reviews
The echocardiography images in this book are of such good quality that they alone justify buying the book. Generally the text is concise and informative, giving up to the minute information in many areas of equine cardiology.

2 minor criticisms: Firstly, the information currently known about heart rate variability in the horse (and other species) is so slight that it probably did not justify its own chapter. Secondly, little to no information is given regarding support of the cardiovascular system during intensive care of horses - this is an emerging field of more relevance to day to day treatment of horses than heart rate variability.

Overall this is the best source of information on equine cardiology available. Although all of the standard textbooks on Equine Medicine (Reed and Bayly, Smith) have cardiology chapters, the extra information in this book and the fabulous illustrations justify its purchase.

Acoustic Guitar Play-Along: Vol. 2

Acoustic Guitar Play-Along: Vol. 2
Hal Leonard Corp. | 2003-03-03 00:00:00 | Hal Leonard Corporation | 48 | Songbooks
The Guitar Play-Along Series will assist you in learning to play your favorite songs quickly and easily. Just follow the tab, listen to the CD to hear how the guitar should sound, and then play along using the separate backing tracks. The melody and lyrics are also included in the book in case you want to sing, or to simply help you follow along. 8 songs, including: Angie * Behind Blue Eyes * Best of My Love * Blackbird * Dust in the Wind * Layla * Night Moves * Yesterday.
Reviews
This volume, like the others in the series, is mainly chord strumming. There are a couple of pieces for which single notes, and embellished and partial chords are used. These arrangements are worthwhile, but the majority are pretty shallow and best for comping. When you play them, the song may be recognizable, but it won't be melodically complete.

One problem that is common to so many of this type of CD accompanied books, is that the guitar part in never offered in complete isolation. Percussion and other musical support sounds fine for listening, but to best learn the piece, a clean solo would be more helpful. I think the percussion, etc. is included to mask that weak arrangements of the strumming songs.

Murach's SQL Server 2008 for Developers (Murach: Training & Reference)

Murach's SQL Server 2008 for Developers (Murach: Training & Reference)
| 2008-11-24 00:00:00 | | 0 | SQL Server

This book is designed to teach application developers all of the skills they need to use SQL to work with a Microsoft SQL Server 2008 database. But it's also a great first book for developers who are on the path to becoming a DBA.

Unlike most SQL Server 2008 books, this one starts by showing you how to use SQL queries to extract and update the data in a database, because that's what every application developer needs to know first. Then, it shows how to design and implement a database, how to use powerful backend database features like views, stored procedures, functions, triggers, cursors, transactions, locking, security, and how to work with BLOB and XML data. Finally, it shows how to use the CLR integration feature to create database objects using a .NET language such as C# or Visual Basic.

From the publisher
The SQL book that most developers don't even know they need that's how I think of this book.

To be an effective application developer, you need to master SQL for the database you re going to be using. But many developers get by with the SQL they know, never realizing how much they're missing out on.

So this is first of all a book for developers who use Microsoft SQL Server as their DBMS (though it can help you if you want to master standard SQL, too). No matter how much SQL experience you have, you'll find new features that you haven't been taking advantage of.

In section 1, you ll learn the concepts and terms you need for working with any database. You ll also learn how to use the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Management Studio to work with queries and databases. At that point, you ll be prepared for rapid progress as you learn SQL.

In section 2, you ll learn all the skills for retrieving data from a database and for adding, updating, merging, and deleting that data. These skills move from the simple to the complex so you won t have any trouble if you re a SQL novice. And they present skills like using outer joins, summary queries, and subqueries that will raise your SQL expertise if you do have SQL experience.

In section 3, you ll learn how to design a database and how to implement that design using either SQL DDL (Data Definition Language) statements or the Management Studio. When you re done, you ll be able to design and implement your own databases. But even if you re never called upon to do that, this section will give you perspective that will make you a better SQL developer.

Section 4 presents the skills for working with database features like views, stored procedures, functions, triggers, cursors, transactions, and security. It teaches you how to use SQL features to work with XML data. And it shows you how to use the 2008 FILESTREAM storage feature to work with binary large objects (BLOBs) such as image, sound, and video files. These are the features that give a DBMS much of its power and that give you an extra edge in your SQL skills.

To complete your SQL Server skills, section 5 shows you how to use the CLR integration feature. This feature allows you to create database objects like stored procedures and user-defined types using a .NET language like C# or Visual Basic.

Planning and Socioeconomic Applications (Geotechnologies and the Environment)

Planning and Socioeconomic Applications (Geotechnologies and the Environment)
- | 2009-01-01 00:00:00 | Springer; 1 edition | 223 | Finances and Money
The book focuses on socio-demographics and the use of these data to support strategic planning initiatives associated with the spatial expansion of urban areas and economic development. It contains a conceptual discussion of the challenges, both methodological and practical, implementing GIS applications for assessing economic and planning activities in peripheral regions including developing countries.

The book examines how spatial clustering concepts, spatial models, and related visualization techniques (GIS) can be applied to the case of economic development in rural environments. It discusses methodological issues including data and analysis issues. It also examines the differential growth patterns of counties within city-systems of the Western United States from the date of county formation until the late 20th century, using an historical GIS and historical US Census data. The final chapter summarizes the collection and positions it within the context of the broader book series on geotechnologies.

The book is written by planning practitioners as well as university based researchers. It will provide scholars and professionals with a survey of the contemporary work in the field, and with insights into remaining questions, methodological debates, and technical complications of employing geotechnologies in the real world.

Guerrilla Oracle: The Succinct Windows Perspective

Guerrilla Oracle: The Succinct Windows Perspective
| 2003-02-19 00:00:00 | | 496 | Oracle

An introduction to the overall features of Oracle. At the end the reader will have developed a fully functional database, and will have a solid, well-rounded grasp of Oracle. Gets the reader up and running with Oracle quickly. Softcover.

User review
A good Oracle book to start with
I have pondered thru many Oracle books but this one explains the concepts very clearly. I set up Oracle on my computer using the instructions and did all the exercises. I had no problem and learned a lot in a short time.

I would recommend this book for a beginner and then move on to the move advanced Oracle books.

User review
Probably not what you're looking for!
If you are new to Oracle (and this book is obviously geared toward the new user) you might want to stay away from this book. The author does take a step-by-step approach to installing Oracle and creating databases, etc. but the steps are out of order (you're asked to grant users rights to tables that you have not yet created), code fragments are incorrect (table names change throughout examples) and there is very little `meat` to anything.

In nearly every chapter the author suggest that you go to other documentation for further study. I suggest you bypass this book entirely and move on to something more substantive and accurate.

User review
Excellent, if you are a beginner in Oracle
Oralce databse is a great topic. If you are the expert in it, I am sure you can find a job in everywhere.

Under re-enginnering process, most of companies will use database and IT technology to save their labour cost. Oracle becomes the key on the process. However a lot of books in the market are too difficult for beginners. Some of them only explain the idea without examples and practices.

Through this book, you can learn the basic concepts and take some hands-on exercises. Although it is not the best starting reference (more exercises will be much better), I still recommend this book for the one who interest in Oracle.

User review
Cool Perl Debugger book for experienced programmers
`Perl Debugger Pocket Reference` is a relativly short introduction into the command line Perl Debugger (perl -d option). You will find the following main chapters in this book:

- Introductory chapters (partly meta chapters not about the debugger but about good programming)
- Debugger Commands
- Debugger Variables
- Debugging Options
- Debugger Internals, Quick reference, rest

When I bought this book I had hoped for a `,,.Pocket Guide` and not a `,,.Pocket Reference` (deeper coverage). I consider this not an extreme `,,.Pocket Reference` (like e.g. `Perl Pocket Reference`) because this book contains examples for each of the commands and options that it describes. For me examples are the most important part in technical books.

The language, the printing and the index (there is an alphabetic index) are of the usual high O'Reilly standard).

I think that `Perl Debugger Pocket Reference` might be a bit heavy if you never used a command line debugger like gdb or xdb before. This book assumes that you already know what and why you want to do with the debugger, you will be explained WHO to do this with the debugger. PDPR is missing the process model when using a debugger. Personally I would have wished for even more examples and a bit more about when to use a certain feature of the debugger.

For all those poor souls like me that still have to use Perl 5.5, you will not like this book because it explains the cool new features of the Perl 5.8 debugger (differences to Perl 5.6 covered as well) that are missing in Perl 5.5. I hope that I can convince my customer to upgrade to Perl 5.8 to be able to use cool new debugger (especially the w watchpoints will be great).

I will keep this booklet next to my keyboard when I am Perl programming from now on to be able to lookup the Debugger functions that I will need. If you are a Perl programmer like me that does not produce flawless code, I really recommend this book. I will use it again right after finishing this review. Perl debugging will be more fun (for me) from now on.

Europe in the High Middle Ages, 1150-1309 (General History of Europe)

Europe in the High Middle Ages, 1150-1309 (General History of Europe)
John Hine Mundy | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | Longman Group United Kingdom | 488 | Europe
A broad survey of European history between 1150-1309 in which discussion (on a regional or continent-wide basis) of social, economic, administrative and intellectual themes is woven into a framework of political events.
Reviews
Mundy's Europe in the High Middle Ages, along with the two companion works by Denys Hay and Christopher Brooke, provide an extraordinarily useful study of the medieval period. They fit perfectly between a general survey text and more narrowly focused monographic studies. Using a largely similar structure, the three books provide a comprehensive and broadly focused study of all aspects of the medieval experience. But what is most useful about these books, especially Mundy's, is that they look beneathe the events of their respective periods to find deeper but less obvious forces of change. Mundy's particular emphasis on the expansion of literacy and education beyond the clerical class is an extremely important insight. For a non-specialist who seeks a complete but managable and eminently readable collection on the Middle Ages, these three books are without peer.

I attended to varicous schools in Liddypol. And still didn't pass -- much to my Aunties supplies. As a member of the most publified Beatles my (P, G, and R's) records might seem funnier to some of you than this book, but as far as I'm conceived this correction of short writty is the most wonderfoul larf I've every ready.

Reviews
I know I'm commenting on this piece of work from a biased perspective (am a Fab Four fan...and proud of it, babe ;-) ), so if that's not gonna help...don't bother reading on...

Am always have been in awe of Lennon - with and post-McCartney, his musical intellect is undeniable. Added to that awe is a smidgen of a feeling of intimidation. Video footage of live interviews as well as chronicles of people who were, in some way, part of the Beatles entourage back then rarely fail to give proof of his acerbic and sarcastic sensibilities.

And then there are his bouts of spastic facial and bodily movements in front of the camera, deliberately garbled half-mutterings, and forays into puns (i.e. "Hi, I'm John, and I, too, play the guitar; sometimes I play the fool...").

In His Own Write is yet another proof of his unique sense of humor - a blending of bits of satire, the macabre, and the eminently whimsical.

But what really makes this little book stand out (besides the iconic drawings), is his twists of phrases and words (and letters within words) which allude to some quite-mad ramblings, but actually make sense... In a way, this could be a sort of evidence on how differently "wired" he may have been compared to most people.

Examples:

(from At the Denis)

"Sir: Sly down in that legchair Madam and open your gorble wide - your mouse is all but toothless [...] Everydobby knows there are foor decisives two canyons and ten grundies, which make thirsty two in all."

(from Nicely Nicely Clive)

"To have and to harm...till death duty part...he knew it all by hertz. Clive Barrow seemed oblivious. Roger could visualize Anne in her flowing weddy drag, being wheeled up the aisle, smiling a blessing. He had butterfield in his stomarce as he fastened his bough tie and brushed his hairs..."

(from Unhappy Frank)

" `Don't like that chair one bit,' he showbedy. `Just look at that garbet all filby and durby. How am I supposed to look affaffter all this garby ruddish. Wart am I but a slave tow look upon with deesekfrebit all the peegle larfing and buzing me in front of all the worled. How can I but garry on?'..."

My favorite bits are I Sat Belonely, Sad Michael, and The Fat Growth on Eric Hearble.

Half of the time, of course (as I've said), I don't have a clue as to what he's saying. His Liverpudlian sense of humor and slang is often lost on me. Which, of course, shouldn't be a problem to those who are familiar with it. In my case, I guess that was just the only thing hampering me from totally enjoying it. Otherwise, it's a nice way to pass the time - you ponder first the words, and *then* what the heck he's saying...

All I can say (belatedly) is that part of the humor here is going to be an acquired taste. And if that means having to read In His Own Write again and again, well, then, is that so bad?

Lemme think... uhmm...no! :)

Reviews
i bought this book for my "baby" brother who is an avid Beatles fan - I knew the contents well because I too am a great fan. The Lopsided Spread of Christianity: Toward an Understanding of the Diffusion of Religions

The Lopsided Spread of Christianity: Toward an Understanding of the Diffusion of Religions
Robert Montgomery | 2001-10-30 00:00:00 | Praeger | 208 | Social Sciences
Comparing the spread of Christianity to the East to its more successful spread to the West, Montgomery illustrates the uneven diffusion of one of the world's most influential and successful religions. The analysis examines the causes for Christianity's success to the West and its relative failings in major societies to the east of Jerusalem, including India, Persia, and China. Montgomery provides a theory of the diffusion of religion in general, and of Christianity in particular. Groundbreaking in its attempt to establish a better understanding of religious diffusion, this work will be indispensable to those interested in the study of sociology of religions, religious studies, missionary studies, and Christianity.

Ageing Well: Nutrition, Health, and Social Interventions (Society for the Study of Human Biology)

Ageing Well: Nutrition, Health, and Social Interventions (Society for the Study of Human Biology)
Alan D. Dangour,Emily M. D. Grundy,Astrid E. Fletcher | 2007-03-12 00:00:00 | CRC Press | 192 | Diets
Many current public health actions and policies aimed at older people revolve around the often prevailing view that failing health is a consequence of ageing. It is now clear that it is possible to postpone or even prevent much of the age-related decline in health that was once thought inevitable. Future policies must recognise this changing paradigm, and, using a multi-disciplinary approach, integrate fully the changing needs of older people into all areas of public policy including health, nutrition, social support, housing, and economic security.

Derived from the 47th Annual Symposium of the Society for the Study of Human Biology in November 2005, Ageing Well: Nutrition, Health, and Social Interventions highlights important health and social factors affecting quality of life in older age, and reviews possible interventions aimed at the prevention or amelioration of problems that reduce the potential for ageing well. Covering a wide range of topics, contributors address the nutritional vulnerability and specific nutritional needs of older adults and confirm the necessity of appropriate diet and exercise in order to maintain both physical and cognitive health. Reminiscence, social interaction and support are highlighted as crucial for the preservation of identity, health and emotional well-being. Other chapters are concerned with socio-economic differences in the extent of age-related changes in health, resulting particularly from poor quality housing and lack of family support networks. The book includes an examination of the economic consequences for health care systems and pension schemes of ageing populations, provides insight into the methodology of evaluating the cost-effectiveness of interventions, and outlines how the minimum cost of healthy living for the 65+ population can be estimated.

Bringing together the very latest information on successful ageing, Ageing Well: Nutrition, Health, and Social Interventions presents an up-to-date synthesis of the current evidence of nutrition, public health and social interventions aiming to ensure health and good quality of life in older age.

Master the Rubik Cube Easily, 2Nd Edition

Master the Rubik Cube Easily, 2Nd Edition
Czes Kosniowski | 1981-09-30 00:00:00 | | 0 | Entertainment (Other)
If you want to be able to impress people by being able to finish a cube, buy this book. You'll easily learn how to conquer the cube in less than 5 minutes every time. My average is about three and a half minutes, and i only do it to impress people. If you learn more of the moves, you actually can finish it in 45 seconds, it's not just a sales pitch, it's possible. This book will teach you how to complete a cube, however, it won't tell you the reasoning. Basically it's a system of moves that work extremely well. I would suggest this book to anyone, especially advanced cubers. You will be able to do the cube faster this way than almost any other way. The author holds/held the world record at less than 20 seconds.

Modeling Evolution: An Introduction to Numerical Methods

Modeling Evolution: An Introduction to Numerical Methods
Derek A. Roff | 2010-01-01 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press | 464 | Mathematics
Computer modeling is now an integral part of research in evolutionary biology. The advent of increased processing power in the personal computer, coupled with the availability of languages such as R, SPLUS, Mathematica, Maple, Mathcad, and MATLAB, has ensured that the development and analysis of computer models of evolution is now within the capabilities of most graduate students. However, there are two hurdles that tend to discourage students from making full use of the power of computer modeling. The first is the general problem of formulating the question and the second is its implementation using an appropriate computer language.

Modelling Evolution outlines how evolutionary questions are formulated and how, in practice, they can be resolved by analytical and numerical methods (with the emphasis being on the latter). Following a general introduction to computer modeling, successive chapters describe "Fisherian" optimality models, invasibility analysis, genetic models, game theoretic models, and dynamic programming. A common chapter plan facilitates tuition and comprises an introduction (in which the general approach and methods are described) followed by a series of carefully structured scenarios that have been selected to highlight particular aspects of evolutionary modeling. Coding for each example is pred in either R or MATLAB since both of these programs are readily available and extensively used. This coding is available on the author's web site allowing easy implementation and study of the programs. Each chapter concludes with a list of exemplary papers which have been chosen on the basis of how well they explain and illustrate the techniques discussed in the chapter.

·Combat techniques for all characters
Reviews
The game is really awesome! We find ourselves always coming back to play this game.

However, this guide, upon getting it, I threw it in the recycle bin. lol
Reviews
I bought this book just to help me out on Minas Tirith - Top of the Wall - because I couldn't figure out exactly what I was supposed to be doing. I did refer to this book a couple of times along the way. I have just finished the game and re-playing some of the levels with different characters just for fun. If you are having any kind of trouble with this game, this guide offers some good tips. It is excellent at showing you how to beat all the bosses and finding missed items and offers some good strategies for each level. If you don't want to read any hints, then don't read the next few sentences. The guide book tells you how to defeat the Nazgul at the "Black Gate" with Aragorn. If you are having too much trouble doing this (as I did), change your character to Gandalf. Gandalf's magic arrows do ten times more damage to the Nazgul than if you use Gimli, Aragorn, or Legolas.

Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion: An Engineering Insight (Engineering Materials and Processes)

Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion: An Engineering Insight (Engineering Materials and Processes)
Reza Javaherdashti | 2008-05-20 00:00:00 | Springer | 164 | Engineering

Microbiologically-influenced corrosion (MIC) is one of the greatest mysteries of corrosion science and engineering, due to the complexities resulting from the involvement of living things such as bacteria. Bacteria are not only able to affect our health, but are also capable of impacting upon everyday life through a wide range of industrial sectors and the economy.

Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion: An Engineering Insight introduces a new approach to the basics of MIC and explains how to recognise, understand, mitigate and/or prevent this type of corrosion. Topics explored include stress corrosion cracking and microbial corrosion, the pros and cons of biocides, the involvement of magnetic bacteria in microbial corrosion, and a new interpretation of cathodic protection based on recent research in microbial environments.

The material covered by Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion: An Engineering Insight will be of benefit to professional and consultant engineers in power generating, oil and gas, marine, and mining industries; as well as to researchers in the fields of chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, corrosion and mechanical engineering.

Reviews
It is a nice reference book. It really gives you an overview of biological corrosion. I was expecting a thicker book, but I guess the information is concise and detailed enough for someone starting to learn the field. It was also the only book that I could find in the area.

Contemporary Bayesian Econometrics and Statistics (Wiley Series in Probability and Statistics)

Contemporary Bayesian Econometrics and Statistics (Wiley Series in Probability and Statistics)
John Geweke | 2005-09-14 00:00:00 | Wiley-Interscience | 320 | Economics
Tools to improve decision making in an imperfect world

This publication provides readers with a thorough understanding of Bayesian analysis that is grounded in the theory of inference and optimal decision making. Contemporary Bayesian Econometrics and Statistics provides readers with state-of-the-art simulation methods and models that are used to solve complex real-world problems. Armed with a strong foundation in both theory and practical problem-solving tools, readers discover how to optimize decision making when faced with problems that involve limited or imperfect data.

The book begins by examining the theoretical and mathematical foundations of Bayesian statistics to help readers understand how and why it is used in problem solving. The author then describes how modern simulation methods make Bayesian approaches practical using widely available mathematical applications software. In addition, the author details how models can be applied to specific problems, including:
* Linear models and policy choices
* Modeling with latent variables and missing data
* Time series models and prediction
* Comparison and evaluation of models

The publication has been developed and fine- tuned through a decade of classroom experience, and readers will find the author's approach very engaging and accessible. There are nearly 200 examples and exercises to help readers see how effective use of Bayesian statistics enables them to make optimal decisions. MATLAB? and R computer programs are integrated throughout the book. An accompanying Web site provides readers with computer code for many examples and datasets.

This publication is tailored for research professionals who use econometrics and similar statistical methods in their work. With its emphasis on practical problem solving and extensive use of examples and exercises, this is also an excellent textbook for graduate-level students in a broad range of fields, including economics, statistics, the social sciences, business, and public policy.

The Medium is the Massage

The Medium is the Massage
Marshall McLuhan,Quentin Fiore | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | Gingko Press | 160 | Artists, A-Z
30 years after its publication Marshall McLuhan's The Medium is the Massage remains his most entertaining, provocative, and piquant book. With every technological and social "advance" McLuhan's proclamation that "the media work us over completely" becomes more evident and plain. In his words, 'so pervasive are they in their personal, political, economic, aesthetic, psychological, moral, ethical and social consequences that they leave no part of us untouched, unaffected, or unaltered'.

McLuhan's remarkable observation that "societies have always been shaped more by the nature of the media by which men communicate than by the content of the communication" is undoubtedly more relevant today than ever before. With the rise of the internet and the explosion of the digital revolution there has never been a better time to revisit Marshall McLuhan.
The Medium is the Massage is Marshall McLuhan's most condensed, and perhaps most effective, presentation of his ideas. Using a layout style that was later copied by Wired, McLuhan and coauthor/designer Quentin Fiore combine word and image to illustrate and enact the ideas that were first put forward in the dense and poorly organized Understanding Media. McLuhan's ideas about the nature of media, the increasing speed of communication, and the technological basis for our understanding of who we are come to life in this slender volume. Although originally printed in 1967, the art and style in The Medium is the Massage seem as fresh today as in the summer of love, and the ideas are even more resonant now that computer interfaces are becoming gateways to the global village.
Reviews
McLuhan was a prophet of his time for communications. His message is timeless and provides expert ideas seamlessly through this book!
Reviews
A great book for those studying the differences in the types of media. Has a nice, thick cover too, not thin paper.
Reviews
Perhaps the best test of new ideas is how quickly they morph to become conventional wisdom.

Viewed from this perspective this book is one of a few excellent examples.

It evidenced the first use of the term global village. But more than that it accurately portrayed what we have since come to view as the means of communication in that village...the modern technological media.

By its necessarily condensed communication structure it's created stealth ideas that quickly cease the public consciousness (only all too often, to be just as quickly overthrown).

Though the story through pictures idea is now admittedly just as dated as the phrase "right on" which came from the same time period the book nevertheless remains interesting reading for students of communications, the media and popular culture.
Reviews
The Medium is the Massage: An Inventory of Effects is a crazy little book (159 pages, mostly with images) that has been spouting some crazy ideas since its original publication in 1967. The book was written by Marshall McLuhan and desgined by Quentin Fiore. It is also the only book I have ever found with its own producer, one Jerome Angel.

This book is also what I imagine a book would look like were it on drugs.

In other words, I found this book to be complete chaos. In images, photos, text, and aphorisms, McLuhan tries to analyze, and perhaps even define, what life will be like as more and more technologies enter society's everyday lives. Will the global village shrink? Will distances matter at all? Will everything we thought we knew about technology be rendered moot? Maybe. McLuhan deals with all of those topics and more.

The problem with the book is that these topics are dealt with in a very scattered manner. While some points were interesting, most were confusing. And while the design of the book is sort of revolutionary, even after forty some odd years, it is also chaotic. I also can't help but wonder if those forty years between today and the original publication have made some of the points McLuhan et al hoped to make dated in the interim.

Qualms aside, the book does make one good point that even I was able to understand amidst the chaos and confusion I felt throughout The Medium is the Massage:

there is absolutely no inevitability as long as there is a willingness to contemplate what is happening

No matter what truth (or lack thereof) can now be found in this book, the above statement holds true. It is also a crucial element to any media discussion which is why, even though this book is crazy in so many different ways, people are still looking to it for answers about how technology is impacting all of our lives. So, while I didn't really "get" everything this book had to say I am able to appreciate why others find it so crucial to discussions of technology thanks to that quote. Amidst the chaos, some nuggets of truth do shine through.

Reviews

One of the great piece of feedback I got from my boss (and independently from our COO) was that while I am close enough to technology and design I am not really in the advertising and marketing business. Two weeks ago at the Forrester Consumer Forum I cornered a traveling bard of the advertising industry: Shane. Just Shane. I managed to pick over his almost photographic memory for books that would help ground me in the business. The first book I read on my quest to get closer to the advertising business was "The medium is the massage" by Marshall McLuhan. O ... M ... G This book was written in 1967 and sounds like it was written this year. McLuhan's vision for the future and linkage to the change from a mechanistic society to an information society is still directly relevant. As we move from an information society into a conceptual society, his message still resonates. Why have I not heard of this book before? Why did I not read this in university? Why has this been hidden from me, despite my design reading and exploration of the fields of visualization, visual thinking, creativity, and problem solving? Oh yeah, because none of those things are in advertising. Some of my favorite quotes (several incredibly apropos of this particular time and space):

Politics will eventually be replaced by imagery. The politician will be only too happy to abdicate in favor of his image, because the image will be much more powerful than he could ever be.

The core message from the book can be boiled down into the following:

The past went that-a-way. When faced with a totally new situation, we tend always to attach ourselves to the objects, to the flavor of the most recent past. We look at the present through a rear view mirror. We march backwards into the future.

And of course:

The medium is the message. This is merely to say that the personal and social consequences of any medium / that is, of any extension of ourselves / result from the new scale that is introduced into our affairs by each extension of ourselves, or by any new technology.

Get this book. Read this book. Re-read this book imagining yourself (or like me your parents) in 1967. Think about it. (re-posted from http://dckiwi.wordpress.com/2008/11/16/the-medium-is-the-message/)

Fer De Lance: A Briefing on Soviet Scalar Electromagnetic Weapons

Fer De Lance: A Briefing on Soviet Scalar Electromagnetic Weapons
T. E. Bearden | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | Tesla Book Company | 225 | Mathematics
T.E. Bearden claims in this work that the Soviet Union developed scalar electromagnetic technology during the Cold War. He discusses how Nikola Tesla originally elucidated the theory of scalar electromagnetics at the turn of the century, but was largely ignored in the west. The Soviets however, saw the utility of Tesla's theories and applied them to the development of weapons of mass distruction heretofore unseen in the western world. The author explains both the theories involved and details about the successful Soviet weapons projects.
Reviews
Seemed to explain a lot of things that are taking place in the Pacific Northwest and Southern States right now. Also the thoughts about magnetic propulsion without fuel are very thought provoking, since I have seen this demonstrated in the form of an electrical generator, which ran for a year without any energy consumption, except the use of the electromagnetic waves supplied by the Earth's rotation and gravity. Too bad Tom Edison beat Nikoli out in the energy race electricity might be much less expensive today.
Reviews
Tells how Russia was ahead of the USA in perfecting our HAARP technology. Has pictures of the weapons and protective devices created from the low frequency technology of Tesla.
Reviews
This book is presented as a set of presentation slides that describe a tremendous weapons capability developed by the Russians based on a solution to the grand unification of forces. Supposedly the weapons use the theories to create gravitational beams which penetrate armor and then convert into electromagnetic beams frying the insides of tanks and missiles. A lot of doubtful assumptions go into making the theory work and the supporting evidence is questionable. I have to rate the book as neutral. It is definately bad science but I'm not sure yet that its goal was to be good science

Framing and Imagining Disease in Cultural History

Framing and Imagining Disease in Cultural History
George S. Rousseau,Miranda Gill,David B. Haycock,Malte Herwig | 2003-10-03 00:00:00 | Palgrave Macmillan | 344 | World
Throughout human history illness has been socially interpreted before its range of meanings could be understood and disseminated. Writers of diverse types have been as active in constructing these meanings as doctors, yet it is only recently that literary traditions have been recognized as a rich archive for these interpretations. These essays focus on the methodological hurdles encountered in retrieving these interpretations, called "framing" by the authors. Framing and Imagining Disease aims to explain what has been said about these interpretations and to compare their value.

Stories From Rajatarangini: Tales Of Kashmir

Stories From Rajatarangini: Tales Of Kashmir
Devika Rangachari | 2001-01-01 00:00:00 | CBT Publication | 122 | For Children
For the first time the ancient historical text Rajatarangini which means ‘River of Kings’ has been simplified for the younger generation. The stories which were written by Kalhana, a famous eleventh-century historian-poet bring to light the economic, political and social conditions of his time, and give interesting glimpses of life, including intrigues, in the royal court.

Characters of the epics, such as Sri Krishna, Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva and many others find a place in the events and are drawn in various colors through all the stories giving a pictorial glimpse. Handed down from generation to generation, these stories cover Kashmir’s rich culture, traditions and beliefs.

The selections from the classic work make a scintillating reading. The book is must-keep for the library of a child who awaits an entry into the world of fantasy inspired from reality. The parents must also read it out to their toddlers as the book brings Jammu & Kashmir cultural heritage into a literary concept like never before.
