Renewable Energy Resources

Renewable Energy Resources
John Twidell,Tony Weir | 2005-12-16 00:00:00 | Taylor & Francis | 624 | Economics

Retaining the successful format of the first edition and building on its solid grounding in the principles of renewable energy resources, this second edition has been revised in line with the latest advances in the field to include new technologies and an assessment of their impact. Considering each technology in depth from both scientific and environmental perspectives, it covers solar energy, photovoltaic, wind, wave, tidal and hydro power, biofuels, geothermals and more, as well as featuring a new chapter on institutional factors, including economics. In addition, extra worked problems and case studies are also provided to help readers put theory into practice.

Reading and web-based material for further study is indicated after each chapter, making this text ideal, not only for practitioners, but also for students on multi-disciplinary masters degrees in science and engineering as well specialist modules in science and engineering first degrees.

Reviews
This book, though knowledgeable, is convoluted. It reads relatively well for a textbook, but the exercises are horrendous. Problems worked out in the text are often split up into different sections of a single or multiple chapters. As for the end-of-chapter problems, the answers are not given in the back; instead, "hints" are offered (a significant portion are incorrect).

Perhaps this book would be helpful if you ignore the mathematics.

I have poured over this text for hours and left frustrated.
Reviews
I am using this for an online course in renewable energy resources. So far, the book seems to give a good engineering perspective on renewables. One complaint is the questions given at the end of the chapters are often vague and tough to manage.

The Political Animal: Biology, Ethics and Politics

The Political Animal: Biology, Ethics and Politics
Stephen R L Clark,Stephen R.L Clark | 1999-06-28 00:00:00 | Routledge | 224 | Philosophy
In The Political Animal Stephen Clark investigates the political nature of the human animal. Based on biological science and traditional ethics, he probes into areas of inquiry that are usually ignored by traditional political theory. He suggests that properly informed political philosophy must take the role of women and children more seriously, and must be prepared to face up to the ethnocentric and domineering tendencies of the human animal.

Religion and the Enlightenment

Religion and the Enlightenment
James Byrne | 1997-07-31 00:00:00 | Westminster John Knox Press | 268 | Church History
This volume offers an overview of the Enlightenment's revolution of Western theology. It explains the era's ideas within the framework of religion, politics, and society--and shows how they impacted that society.
Reviews
If you're looking for a book on the Enlightenment and religious and philosophical thinkers in the Enlightenment that takes seriously that thinkers' ideas emerge in response to historical context, this one is great. Clearly written and not overloaded with technical theological and/or philosophical terms, the author helps readers understand the mutual relation between historical context and thinkers--how both shape each other. Very suitable for courses on Modern Christian Thought.
Reviews
I can't even count how many times I've gone around and around with friends trying to properly frame the role and significance of scientific discovery from a Christian perspective. This book provides an invaluable historical perspective on a centuries-old quandary. It is a fascinating book on the effects of the French Enlightenment and the Reformation on religious thought. James Byrne is informative without being dry, and he treats both sides with respect, not condescension. I love this book - the best book I've bought so far this year.

The Killer Inside Me

The Killer Inside Me
Jim Thompson | 1991-03-13 00:00:00 | Vintage | 256 | 20th Century
In a small town in Texas there is a sheriff's deputy named Lou Ford, a man so dull that he lives in cliches, so good-natured that he doesn't even lay a finger on the drunks who come into his custody. But then, that would be too easy, for Lou's sickness requires other victims. . . . A nightmarish book of psychopathic evil.
Reviews
This was a noir read unlike any that I have read before. It had a haunting quality for me. The sociopath who studies society like bugs in a petrie dish and with the same level of emotional affect and then acts without conscience or concern for consequence toward people he has known for most of his life.

Not for the faint of heart, for sure.
Reviews
I've never been a fan of the classics, I usually find them all boring and tedious to read. But Jim Thompson's The Killer Inside Me grabbed my interest (as anything involving dark themes, sociopaths, and psychopaths do) and never let it go. I admit, the slow start almost discouraged me from reading more but I'm glad that I kept with it. Lou is a very interesting and complex character and I found myself becoming charmed by his 'good ol' boy' demeanor to hide his slightly sadistic and calculating side. Some parts of this novel made me laugh, some made me cringe, and some parts had me shaking my head at how much of a smooth criminal Lou was. This was a great piece of work.
Reviews
It's sometime hard to believe that this book was written decades ago; it seems so up to date. The plot is timeless, and the setting could be anywhere in the country or in any decade for the last 50 years or so.

The basic plot involves a 29 year old deputy sheriff in Texas who harbors a secret: he has a compulsion for killing, but has been able to keep it under control for many years. It appears from the writing that, when he was young, something happened with his father's housekeeper that initiated this compulsion, but he is considered by his fellow townsmen a bit of a dimwit, a perception he has worked very diligently to perfect.

Everything begins to fall apart for him when he is asked by his boss to do something about a prostitute who lives in the area. When he meets her all of his prior restraints seem to disappear, and upon that hangs the plot. I won't go into it further because anything more would spoil this excellent book for subsequent readers. All I will say is that there is a fine depiction of a mind descending slowly but surely into madness, leaving a trail of victims in its wake. Read the book; I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
Reviews
Reviewers who claim that this book is misogynist, or boring, or "unrealistic" - well, what can you say about ignorance?

This is one of the most sophisticated noirs ever written, a "genre" novel that clearly flies over the head of many typical genre readers.

It is actually an incredibly humane and deep psychological portrait of an flawed and damaged human being, and ultimately, I would argue, a profoundly "feminist" novel. Yes, that's right. Feminist.

It never revels in its violence, it never simply titillates. We are (strongly) meant to feel revulsion at the presentation of actions that in lesser novels would merely entertain. This is not entertainment. It is an indictment of a whole culture.

It goes to the heart of what drives so much detective fiction, and what so few of that genre's authors are ever able to explore or even acknowledge - that an irrational fear and hatred of women is at the root of the whole tough-guy pose, the whole self-imposed, self-serving, hard luck lone wolf personality cliche that American genre readers love so much, and so uncritically.

Reviews
The typically edgy, sparse writing of Jim Thompson almost kept me reading this drama about a mean, killer sheriff, much like a Cormac McCarthy character. However, the plot line eventually turned me off because it really made no sense. The protaganist beats a whore to death and kills her boyfriend and somehow they convince the DA and Sheriff, as well as the boyfriend's rich Daddy, Conway, that the whore killed the boyfriend. Huh? My suspension of disbelief just left the building. I have enjoyed most other Thompson books, and I realize this is considered a cult classic, but it left me cold as the main character's heart.

Reviews
The book is very useful if you know nothing or very little about wavelets. The maths is kept simple, if you remember the Fourier transform and convolution, then this book will be easy to follow. There are numerous examples and the graphical representations of the transforms really gives you the gist of the whole wavelet business. Practical applications of wavelets of numerous, rather different, fields are shown. The way wavelets are used is demonstrated in a very easy to follow, literally graphic manner.

What you will not find in the book, however, is where to begin to solve *your* problem with wavelets. Which mother wavelet to use? Should you use discrete or continuous transform? Is there a fast method? What are the best ways of eliminating unwanted bits of the wavelet spectra? Just set things to 0? Use some smoothing? For all those questions you will have to go and find other books.

It is like a book on Fourier transform which tells you what it is, shows you how signals and their spectra are related, shows you the applications of FT in filtering, classification etc, with really good illustrative real-life examples so you now clearly understand what FT is and what it can do for you. But that's it. No mention of things like the FFT, the effects of finite precision, the Gibbs oscillation etc.

It is a very great book if you want to understand what wavelets and the wavelet transform are all about and what they can do (as was in my case). However, it is not the book for you if you know all that and want to actually use the transform for a practical problem. In that sense the title is misleading: it is not a handbook, it is a thorough and really easily understandable introduction to wavelets.

Reviews
This book is by far the best of all the books on wavelet transform I have seen. Not only it explains what wavelet transform is and how it can be used in practice, but also in a very clear and easy to understand manner. Books on wavelet transform tend to be highly mathematical, which can be intimidating for those who just want to use wavelet transform to solve some practical problem. However, this book is very easy to understand and provides lots of examples and end results, namely, formulations to get these results. I give two enthusiastic thumbs up for this excellent book.
Reviews
Well-written book with good explanations. It reads more like an engineering textbook than a mathematics book. I definitely recommend it to those that wish to gain a solid understanding of wavelet technology/principles.
Reviews
Very good introduction to wavelet analysis. Not for someone looking for casual reading but for someone who wants to be able to dig in and start doing actual analysis it will get you going.
Reviews
This book provides a comprehensive overview of wavelet transform methodologies and applications. The emphasis is on practical applications which are illustrated with many detailed figures and examples from Science and Engineering. A particular interesting chapter on medical applications is provided. In the introductory chapters, Addison gives a clear account of the theory for both continuous and discrete wavelet transform and associated post-processing techniques. Unlike many of the other books in this area, Addison communicates the concepts with a level of detail, sufficient for the applied engineer and scientist, but without becoming bogged down in a fog of mathematical gymnastics (a feature of many of the books in this area). A welcome addition to the growing number of books on this important signal analysis technique.

Atom Resolved Surface Reactions: Nanocatalysis

Atom Resolved Surface Reactions: Nanocatalysis
P.R. Davies, M.W. Roberts | 2007-01-01 00:00:00 | Royal Society of Chemistry; 1 edition | 224 | Physics
This book offers a unique perspective of the impact of scanning probe microscopies on our understanding of the chemistry of the surface at the nanoscale.

Research oriented, with the concepts gleaned from Scanning Tunneling Microscopy being related to the more established and accepted views in surface chemistry and catalysis the authors have addresses the question How do the models based on classical spectroscopic and kinetic studies stand up to scrutiny at the atom - resolved level? In taking this approach the reader, new to the field of surface chemistry, should be able to obtain a perspective on how the evidence from STM confirms or questions long standing tenets. An emphasis is given to how did we get to where we are now and a large number of figures from the literature are included along with suggestions for further reading. This book will appeal to all those who wish to become familiar with the contribution Scanning Tunneling Microscopy has made to the understanding of the field of surface chemistry and heterogeneous catalysis and also to those who are new to catalysis, a fascinating and important area of chemistry.

OSI Reference Model for Telecommunications

OSI Reference Model for Telecommunications

*Builds readers' understanding of OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) architecture and equipment in terms that cut through the differences between data and voice. *Spells out the roles, functions, definitions, and fundamentals of each layer *Details the many components of the 7-layer model so often assumed as common knowledge-from numbering systems to signaling rates to properties of noise and distortion
Reviews
There is a lot of white space in the book and quite a few text. The rest is printed power point slides assembled as a book. Content is moderate. This book could be useful as a reference when some short information or summarized facts needed on any data communication topis. However it is not suitable to learn by selfstudy because of lack of text.
Reviews
Great resource to use when setting up telecom for computers.
Reviews
This book is very helpful. It is hard to find a book which merges telecommunication concepts with computer technology concepts. This book was well worth the investment.
Reviews
I thought the book was very helpful. The book provided a great connection between the OSI Reference model and a telecommunications environment. Both of these enties have to work together and the approach in this book made it helpful to understand. The diagrams were also helpful and I found the approach of itemizing the information instead of paragraph form made it easier find me information and go on.
Reviews
This book was an extremely poor pick. The theory behind the OSI Reference Model is not given at all. The first 3 layers are covered to some basic extent. Overall, the book seems to be a series of long PowerPoint presentations put together in book format. By PowerPoint presentations, I am referring to each page being a list of "bullet-point" phrases that is only there to give a reader a guideline for the lecture she is hearing. Unfortunately, there is no accompanying lecture, so the presentation is totally useless. Altogether, this was a waste of money.

Japanese Manufacturing Investment in Europe: Its Impact on the UK Economy (International Business Series)

Japanese Manufacturing Investment in Europe: Its Impact on the UK Economy (International Business Series)
Roger Strange | 1993-09-09 00:00:00 | Routledge | 576 | Industrial Relations
Japanese Manufacturing Investment in Europe is a provocative examination of the causes and consequences of the growing internationalization of Japanese business and Japan's increasing involvement in the economies of EC countries.

When in the mid-1980s, a surge in foreign direct investment (FDI) among the five great powers took place, Japanese manufacturing investment in Europe occupied the forefront of this unprecedented growth and involved an even wider range of industries than before. This volume provides twenty-seven detailed case studies of Japanese companies in order to demonstrate the diversity of adopted strategies. Roger Strange also reviews the current literature on FDI and trade policy and argues for a new theoretical framework in the assessment of foreign direct investment.

Microbes at Work: From Wastes to Resources

Microbes at Work: From Wastes to Resources
Heribert Insam,Ingrid Franke-Whittle,Marta Goberna | 2009-12-17 00:00:00 | Springer | 329 | Engineering

Among the goals of environmentally sound waste treatment is the recycling of organic wastes. The most practiced options are composting and anaerobic digestion, both processes being carried out by microorganisms. This book provides an overview of the various ways microbes are doing their job and gives the reader an impression of their potential.

The sixteen chapters of this book summarize the advantages and disadvantages of treatment processes, whether they are aerobic like composting or work without oxygen like anaerobic digestion for biogas (methane) production. These chapters show the potential of microorganisms to create valuable resources from otherwise wasted materials. These resources include profitable organic, humus-like soil conditioners or fertilizer components which are often suppressive to plant diseases. Composts may thus improve soil carbon sequestration, or support sustainable agriculture by reducing the need for mineral fertilizers or pesticides. If anaerobic digestion is used, the biogas produced may replace fossil fuels. Thus, proper biological waste treatment with the help of microorganisms should contribute to a reduction of anthropogenic greenhouse gas production.

The Global Grapevine: Why Rumors of Terrorism, Immigration, and Trade Matter

The Global Grapevine: Why Rumors of Terrorism, Immigration, and Trade Matter
Gary Alan Fine,Bill Ellis | 2010-06-11 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press, USA | 272 | Politics
Far from mere idle tales, rumors are a valuable window into our anxieties and fears. Rumors let us talk as a community about some very inflammatory issues--issues that may be embarrassing or disturbing to discuss-allowing us to act as if we are talking about real events, not personal beliefs. We can air our hidden fears and desires without claiming these attitudes as our own.

In The Global Grapevine, two leading authorities on rumor, folklore, and urban legend--Gary Alan Fine and Bill Ellis--shed light on what contemporary rumors can tell us about the fears and pressures of globalization. In particular, they examine four major themes that emerge over and over again: rumors about terrorism, about immigration, about international trade, and about tourism. The authors analyze how various rumors underscore American reactions to perceived global threats, show how we interpret our changing world, and highlight fears, fantasies, and cherished beliefs about our place in the world. Along the way the book examines a wide variety of rumors-that the Israelis were behind 9-11, the President knew of the attack in advance, tourists wake up in foreign countries with their kidneys stolen, foreign workers urinate in vats of beer destined to be shipped to America. These rumors, the authors argue, reflect our anxieties and fears about contact with foreign cultures-whether we believe foreign competition to be poisoning the domestic economy or that foreign immigration to be eroding American values.

Rumors are the visible tip of a vast iceberg of hidden anxieties. Illuminating the most widely circulated rumors in America in recent years, The Global Grapevine offers an invaluable portrait of what these tales reveal about contemporary society.

The Washington Manual of Surgery, North American Edition: Department of Surgery, Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, MO (Lippincott Manual ... known as the Spiral Manual Series))
Washington University School of Medicine Department of Surgery | 2007-12-07 00:00:00 | Lippincott Williams & Wilkins | 736 | Urology

Revised and updated by residents and faculty of one of the world's top surgical training programs, The Washington Manual of Surgery, Fifth Edition provides concise guidelines and algorithms for diagnosis and management of surgical diseases. The book's pocket size and user-friendly outline format ensure fast access to information.

This edition incorporates evidence-based medicine into each chapter, so readers can fully understand the reasoning behind the recommendations. Minimally invasive techniques, including endovascular, are incorporated into all relevant anatomical site and disease chapters. Coverage of vascular disease has been reorganized into three chapters: cerebrovascular disease, thoracoabdominal vascular disease, and peripheral vascular disease.

Reviews
This manual is worth the price. Curiously for a surgery manual there is no chapter dealing with common antibiotics you need to carry a second book for this. I believe that they have short changed soft tissue infections.
Reviews
Used this book for surgery clerkship and aced the NBME shelf. This book has all the information you need to shine on a surgery clerkship. It is also ideal for residents/attendings making complex management decisions. It is at times dense and a little boring to read as a text but it has all the relevant information and a little more than you will need on the wards. Same size as Wash Manuel of Medical therapeutics (barely fits in white coat pocket). This book may be more valuable than wash manuel of medicine and is the ideal book for anyone motivated to provide up to date and effecient patient care.
Reviews
If you're looking for the most accurate "condensed" text for your Surgery Clerkship, this book is perfect. Only downside is that it doesn't organize the information for you in terms of standardized testing (Shelf, Step II) or getting "pimped" on the wards. You'll need another text that CLEARLY outlines "most likely diagnosis," "next step in management," indications, most pertinent complications, etc.
Reviews
As a General Surgeon and Surgery teacher in a residency I appreciate the value of this manual. I may get quick, truthful and current answers in my job and with my medical's residents.

Thank for this gem.
Reviews
During my internship this book and the Washington Manual of Medical Therapeutics were the 2 books I couldn't live without. They give you quick information to solve almost any problem.

Using Russian - A Guide to Contemporary Usage

Using Russian - A Guide to Contemporary Usage
Derek Offord | 2005-01-01 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 529 | Russian
Using Russian is a guide to Russian usage for those who have already acquired the basics of the language and wish to extend their knowledge. Unlike conventional grammars, it gives special attention to those areas of vocabulary and grammar which cause most difficulty to English speakers, and focuses on questions of style and register which are all too often ignored. Clear, readable and easy to consult, it will prove invaluable to students seeking to improve their fluency and confidence in Russian.
This second edition has been substantially revised and expanded to incorporate fresh material and up-to-date information. Many of the original sections have been rewritten, the passages illustrating register
are all fresh and one brand new chapter has been added, providing a clear picture of Russian usage in the twenty-first century.

Franco and the Spanish Civil War (Introductions to History (New York, N.Y.).)

Franco and the Spanish Civil War (Introductions to History (New York, N.Y.).)
Filipe Ribeiro de Meneses | 2001-02-28 00:00:00 | Routledge | 176 | Portugal
Franco and the Spanish Civil War is a wide-ranging and insightful analysis of the origins, course, and consequences of the conflict and of Franco's role within it. It offers a broad view of the war through a survey of the social and cultural dimensions, as well as the military and political ones. In particular, it traces Franco's meteoric rise to power, his conduct in the war, and his long subsequent rule.

This authoritative introduction illuminates the many different interpretations of the conflict by examining a variety of perspectives. Franco and the Spanish Civil War places the war in its national and global contexts, exploring both nationalist and republican points of view, and giving attention to foreign participation in the conflict.
Reviews
This book is an excellent introduction to the complex issue of the Spanish Civil War. De Meneses' pithy account explains the principle causes, characters and myriad groups involved in the conflict. As an undergraduate student of De Meneses I am able to note in this publication, his passion for the subject as conveyed in lectures. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to gain a brief insight into the Spanish Civil War. Doubtless it will awaken in the reader the desire to read more on the subject.

A Companion to Hemingway's Death in the Afternoon (Studies in American Literature and Culture)

A Companion to Hemingway's Death in the Afternoon (Studies in American Literature and Culture)
Miriam B. Mandel | 2004-11-11 00:00:00 | Camden House | 359 | European
Published in 1932, Death in the Afternoon reveals its author at the height of his intellectual and stylistic powers. By that time, Hemingway had already won critical and popular acclaim for his short stories and novels of the late twenties. A mature and self-confident artist, he now risked his career by switching from fiction to nonfiction, from American characters to Spanish bullfighters, from exotic and romantic settings to the tough world of the Spanish bullring, a world that might seem frightening and even repellant to those who do not understand it. Hemingway's nonfiction has been denied the attention that his novels and short stories have enjoyed, a state of affairs this Companion seeks to remedy, breaking new ground by applying theoretical and critical approaches to a work of nonfiction. It does so in original essays that offer a thorough, balanced examination of a complex, boundary-breaking, and hitherto neglected text. The volume is broken into sections dealing with: the composition, reception, and sources of I>Death in the Afternoon; cultural translation, cultural criticism, semiotics, and paratextual matters; and the issues of art, authorship, audience, and the literary legacy of Death in the Afternoon. The contributors to the volume, four men and seven women, lay to rest the stereotype of Hemingway as a macho writer whom women do not read; and their nationalities (British, Spanish, American, and Israeli) indicate that Death in the Afternoon, even as it focuses on a particular national art, discusses matters of universal concern.Contributors: Miriam B. Mandel, Robert W. Trogdon, Lisa Tyler, Linda Wagner-Martin, Peter Messent, Beatriz Penas Ibáñez, Anthony Brand, Nancy Bredendick, Hilary Justice, Amy Vondrak, and Keneth Kinnamon..

java(TM).rmi: The Remote Method Invocation Guide

java(TM).rmi: The Remote Method Invocation Guide
| 2001-07-18 00:00:00 | | 0 | Java

This book provides an in-depth resource to all features of RMI, building a firm, logical foundation for understanding and applying the RMI technology. It contains detailed information about how to apply RMI to get professional developers and students alike `up and running`, while clarifying and extending the official information found in the specification

User review
So disappointed. The book has no exampels
I bought this book because of its high rating among RMI developers. I was disappointed, becuase the book doesn't contain a single comprehensive example. I found it hard to learn without example.

User review
The most advanced book on java RMI
This is the best and the most advanced book on java rmi PERIOD.IMO this should be your second book on rmi.

User review
Best book on RMI
This is the best book on RMI that I have come across and I personally own 4 RMI books (about 10 if you count books that aren't solely on RMI). Contrary to a previous reviewer, this is NOT a beginners book. Beginners should get a more verbose RMI tutorial-like book. This is an advanced reference with very few examples, but it covers topics that you just can't find anywhere else, and furthermore, presents the topics in a detailed, to the point, lucid manner.

There is no better RMI book for the advanced RMI developer who is wishing to learn the `under the hood` workings of RMI.

User review
My least favorite book on RMI. Can you be too concise?
I have several books on RMI and looking for more. This is one in my collection and my least favorite. It is too reference-like, which you can find enough of on the developer's networks. Most notably it lacks continuity; it is basically a huge outline where each paragraph is the most concise definition for that topic. It makes a great reference for the experienced.

User review
an in depth look at rmi
When first looking at the book, I was a bit disappointed from its small size. However, after reading just a couple of pages, I immediately realized that this book is excellent.

I had some prior experience with rmi and this book has certainly improved my understanding of it. It also covers the serialization and I gained much knowledge from it.

The only downside is the lack of full code samples.
Thus beginners to rmi might find it a little annoying.
