The Fearful Rise of Markets: Global Bubbles, Synchronized Meltdowns, and How To Prevent Them in the Future

The Fearful Rise of Markets: Global Bubbles, Synchronized Meltdowns, and How To Prevent Them in the Future
John Authers, Mohamed A. El-Erian | 2010-01-01 00:00:00 | FT Press | 256 | Management
“This enjoyable, fast-moving book is concise, relevant, and perceptive. My bottom line is a simple one: This book should be read by all those interested in the way markets operate, be they investors, analysts, or policy makers.”

From the Foreword by Mohamed A. El-Erian, CEO and co-CIO of PIMCO, and author of When Markets Collide

“This book is a must-read for anyone concerned about how we can avoid recurring debt-induced busts in the years ahead, or anyone who wonders how to invest if (when!) the crisis returns. Authers’ insights on the global financial crisis are profound.”

Robert D. Arnott, Chairman, Research Affiliates, LLC, and author of The Fundamental Index: A Better Way to Invest

“This book illustrates the dangers to investors who fail to recognize that global asset markets have become more synchronized over time. In a crowded field of works on the financial crisis, Authers’ work is unique in both its insight and style.”

Robert R. Johnson, Ph.D., CFA, Senior Managing Director of the CFA Institute

“John Authers has combined his journalistically honed FT skills with great insights. Serious investors and policymakers should read this book.”

David R. Kotok, Chairman and Chief Investment Officer of Cumberland Advisors

“John masterfully drives a stake through the myth of global economic decoupling one chapter and example at a time. A must-read in today’s economy.”

Vitaliy Katsenelson, Director of Research at Investment Management Associates, Inc, author of Active Value Investing: Making Money in Range-Bound Markets

Are we barreling toward another massive global financial catastrophe?

How can so many bubbles form all at once? Why are so many “disconnected” markets now capable of collapsing in unison? In this remarkably readable book, award-winning Financial Times columnist John Authers takes on these critical questions and offers deeply sobering answers.

Authers reveals how the first truly global super bubble was inflated–and might now be inflating again. He illuminates the multiple roots of repeated financial crises: a massive shift in investing power from individuals to big institutions; the migration of key decisions from banks to capital markets; the wholesale financialization of many asset classes; and fundamental failures of both theory and policy.

The Fearful Rise of Markets presents a truly global view, avoiding oversimplifications and ideology as it outlines how we got here and where we stand. Even more valuable, it offers realistic solutions–for decision-makers who want to prevent disaster and investors who want to survive it.

• The herd grows ever larger–and more dangerous
How institutional investing, indexing, and efficient markets theory promote herding

• Cheap money and irrational exuberance
Super fuel for super bubbles

• Too big to fail: the whole story of moral hazard
Banks, hedge funds, and beyond

• Danger signs of the next bubble
Forex, equity, credit, and commodity markets move once more in alignment

Large-Eddy Simulation for Acoustics (Cambridge Aerospace Series)

Large-Eddy Simulation for Acoustics (Cambridge Aerospace Series)
Claus Wagner,Thomas Hüttl,Pierre Sagaut | 2007-01-15 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 470 | Engineering
Noise pollution around airports, trains, and industries increasingly attracts environmental concern and regulation. Designers and researchers have intensified the use of large-eddy simulation (LES) for noise reduced industrial design and acoustical research. This book, written by 30 experts, presents the theoretical background of acoustics and of LES, followed by details about numerical methods, e.g. discretization schemes, boundary conditions, coupling aspects. Industrially relevant, hybrid RANS/LES techniques for acoustic source predictions are presented in detail. Many applications are featured ranging from simple geometries for mixing layers and jet flows to complex wing and car geometries. Selected applications include recent scientific investigations at industrial and university research institutions. Presently one can't offer perfect solution methodologies that address all relevant applications, however the book presents a state of the art collection of methods, tools and evaluation methodologies. The advantages and weaknesses of both the commercial and the research methodologies are carefully presented.

Space Rescue: Ensuring the Safety of Manned Spacecraft (Springer Praxis Books / Space Exploration)
David J. Shayler | 2009-02-13 00:00:00 | Praxis | 356 | Engineering

In Space Rescue: Ensuring the Safety of Manned Spacecraft, author David J. Shayler reviews the development of crew survival and escape methods from the earliest designs of manned spacecraft to the current discussions of systems for ISS and on to the future prospect of sending men and women out towards Mars.

David Shayler reviews the numerous proposed systems of crew rescue and also analyses the adopted systems of ejection seats, escape towers and abort profiles during the ascent from Earth to space, including the safety requirements and contingency procedures available during various mission profiles to get the crew safely back to Earth. The author also examines the various wilderness training programs and abort simulations used to help prepare the crews for almost any unplanned and emergency contingency they may face during their mission.

Reviews
There have been numerous fatalities in manned spaceflight. The shuttles Challenger and Columbia, of course. But others, American and Russian, over the years. Shayler surveys the safety measures set up, some in reaction to those disasters, others as precautions to other hazards.

At the launch pad itself, while the rocket is warming up, there are escape towers. The book reminds us that the rocket is mostly a large pile of exothermic propellant. So the Apollo and Soyuz missions were very careful to put in escape towers.

A lot of the book looks at the American space program. Notably at the shuttle and its various abort modes. Attention is also given to the International Space Station. Like how it might be quickly evacuated.

Humans have been in space 50 years now. A harsh environment in any spacecraft.
Reviews
The title told clearly what's the problem of this book....too much American and to few of the others,Soviet/Russian,European and Chinese. Please next time try to title it right.

The Breakup Club (Red Dress Ink)

The Breakup Club (Red Dress Ink)
Melissa Senate | 2006-01-01 00:00:00 | Red Dress Ink | 296 | United States
Meet the Members of the Breakup Club . . .

Lucy Miller-Masterson: Superstar editor of bestselling books, supermom to a precocious preteen and superwife of a hot doctor . . . until she learns her husband's New Year's resolution of "Leave Lucy."

Miranda Miller: Stuck under her big sister's shadow, this twentysomething editorial assistant hopes her perfect ex-boyfriend will come crawling back . . . with a diamond ring.

Christopher Levy: The women at the office think he stole Lucy's promotion. The moms at the playground think he broke up his family. But this weekend dad can think only about figuring out fatherhood.

Roxy Marone: This Brooklynite shocks her traditional family when she skips her own wedding to hop a train to Manhattan for a life-changing job interview.

In her most ambitious novel yet, Melissa Senate explores life after heartbreak for four very different yet equally memorable New Yorkers, with her characteristic warmth, wit and wisdom.
Reviews
I thought the book was pretty good. I like how the characters had different situations when it came to their break-ups. It gives us insight on how to deal and what to expect in most cases of being the one who are dumped or doing the dumping. Its humorous, I liked it, lol.
Reviews
I liked this book. It's one of those books where each chapter is dedicated to a different character in the book... so you are constantly switching back and forth between each person's life, and then from time to time, their paths cross and you see how they relate to one another. I liked it. I was entertained by all of the characters' stories. I probably liked Roxy's and Chris's storylines the best.
Reviews
I really think that Melissa Senate is one of Red Dress Ink's best writers, so this book was disappointing. On the plus side, I really enjoyed the story and -- real love and real loss, and, as a refreshing change, the longevity of romantic love, as opposed to the theme that tells women that if you can just find your prince, everything else will fall into place. The people in this story are all trying to figure out what it means to be in love and stay in love -- and to fall out of love. In that way, this is perhaps one of the more substantive chick lit love stories out there.

On the other hand, the writing is rushed and sometimes too superficial. The plot has everything necessary to go just a step or two deeper, but does not follow through. Why did Larry really leave his wife? Other than missing his wife, how did Chris feel about her decision to leave him? The real motives and emotions seem to be skipped over. And some parts of the plot seemed to get skipped over too. For example, it just seemed that all of the sudden Roxy was a brunette, and I thought maybe I had skipped a page. I hadn't -- there was no paragraph explaining that she had changed her hair color and her clothes, or why. I actually think that Roxy's conflict could have carried the whole novel -- her family, her search for herself were really compelling, and seemed to steal the show.

Overall, a fun read, and it walks the line between fun, light reading and thoughtful, insightful romance. I'll still read whatver Senate writes next. I think that this will also make a good movie, like See Jane Date.
Reviews
Pros: I read other reviews and I was amazed that anybody could possibly NOT like this book. I thought it was fabulous! The only Red Ink books I'd read were by Lynn Messina and from that alone, I realized that I might like this publishing line a lot. It's always interesting to read about people my age who are trying to figure out their career, their future, their family, etc. so I connected with Roxy the most, who absolutely did not want to fall into the normal "marriage/kids/cooking/gossiping with female relatives." It entertained me that she was the "guy" in the relationship, because I'm usually accused of the same thing. I thought Christopher's character was interesting because it is so rare to read a story about a single dad whose wife left HIM behind, and who is turning women down instead of humping everybody. I thought Lucy was a realistic portrayal of how a married woman acts when her husband is a lunatic, without being stereotypically desperate. Miranda couldn't have been more different from me, but she reminded me of friends I've had over the years, who are constantly chasing love. Basically the book is about four people who have either been the broker-upper or the brokee-upper, and how they deal with each of their situations. I liked how the story was told from different perspectives so we got the chance to learn more about each characters

Cons: It seemed like everybody in this book looked alike, minus Roxy when she died her hair. Blonde hair and blue eyes throughout the whole novel--no variation. With all of these different characters, I'd have been content if the characters had more stand-out features.
Reviews
Melissa Senate's "The Breakup Club" centered around four individuals who were basically in the midst of a breakup. Lucy, a successful editor of a major publishing company was shocked when her seemingly normal husband, Larry, shoved the the tray of their Thanksgiving turkey off the table in front of their family members. She was even more shocked when she realized Larry's one New Year's resolution was to leave her. Lucy's sister, Miranda was dumped by her boyfriend Gabriel after she suggested that they might get married someday. Unable to accept Gabriel's decision, Miranda hoped that he will changed his mind. Christopher, Lucy's colleague, was recently dumped by his wife who left him for an older, richer man. Not to mention, Christopher had to share their only child, Ava, with his former wife's beau. The last individual, Roxy, left her husband to be on their wedding day and went to Manhattan (from Brooklyn) as she decided that she could not be the person her husband, family and friends wanted her to be; a suburban wife. All four decided to form the "Breakup Club" to share their problems and woes.

This was an okay book as the individual stories were somewhat interesting. I think the whole idea of the "breakup club" was kind of lame and the author did not really expand on that. As this is not the author's first attempt at a novel, the writing was quite good and the pace of the book was fast, so there aren't many slow, and uninteresting moments. This is not the best book in this genre but it is certainly better than the average.

Along Came a Spider

Along Came a Spider
James Patterson | 1993-01-01 00:00:00 | Grand Central Publishing | 528 | Fiction Other
This second big winter thriller by a writer named Patterson (see Fiction Forecasts, Oct. 19) features a villain (a multiple-personality serial killer/kidnapper) whom the publisher hopes will remind readers of Thomas Harris's Hannibal Lecter, and a hero who is compared to those of Jonathan Kellerman. Unfortunately, the novel has few merits of its own to set against those authors' works. Hero Alex Cross is in fact a black senior detective in Washington, D.C., who is also a psychiatrist and has a facile but not entirely convincing line of sentimental-cynical patter. The villain is Gary Soneji/Murphy (read Hyde/Jekyll), who kills for recognition, and finally kidnaps the kids of prominent parents. Alex is soon on the case, more enraged by Gary's killing of poor ghetto blacks than by the Lindbergh-inspired kidnapping, and becomes involved with a gorgeous, motorcycle-riding Secret Service supervisor who is not what she seems. Soneji/Murphy is eventually captured--but can the bad part of him be proven guilty? There is even a hint at the end that he may survive for a sequel, though the reader has virtually forgotten him by then. Spider reads fluently enough, but its action and characters seem to have come out of some movie-inspired never-never land. If a contemporary would-be nail-biter is to thrill as it should, it urgently needs stronger connections to reality than this book has. Come back, Thomas Harris! 150,000 first printing; Literary Guild main selection.

This book is right on the money with the latest marketing tendencies: nowadays ALL marketing is Direct Marketing, and a great way to believe this, practice it and get results fast is reading Customer Obsession with diligence. The intention, and I believe this is brave, is that EVERY marketer should learn about DM: in that sense this book is perfect. Good-bye and Amen: A Novel (P.S.)

Good-bye and Amen: A Novel (P.S.)
Beth Gutcheon | 2009-08-01 00:00:00 | Harper Perennial | 272 | Family Saga

In a summer cottage on the coast of Maine, an unlikely love was nurtured, a marriage endured, and a family survived. Now it is time for the children of that marriage to make peace with the wounds and the treasures left to them. And to sort out which is which.

The complicated marriage of the gifted Danish pianist Laurus Moss to the provincial American child of privilege Sydney Brant was a mystery to many who knew them, including their three children. Now Eleanor, Monica, and Jimmy Moss have to decide how to divide or share what Laurus and Sydney have left them without losing one another.

Reviews
It's been a while since I read this book, so this is just a general overview. Overall, I love Beth Gutcheon's writing. I wish she'd write more novels. I read "Leeway Cottage" and liked it very much, so when I saw "Good-bye and Amen," of course I bought it. But it had been a while since I read "Leeway," so I was kind of muddled for the first part of the book. You really can't read one without the other and get much out of it. I think I gave "Leeway" away to the library or to a friend, and of course wished I'd kept it so I could re-read and figure out what was happening. [I just don't have room to keep every book, or I'd never let them go!] Beth Gutcheon's book "Five Fortunes" is one of my favorites, she draws such vivid characters. But "Good-bye" does not stand on its own.
Reviews
I tried to read this, not having read Leeway Cottage, it's prequel. This is definitely not a stand-alone book, but should appeal to readers who enjoyed the first in the series. Gutcheon is a good writer, but her last few books have faltered in quality.
Reviews
Reviewed by Sandie Kirkland for RebeccasReads (2/09)

The Moss family has come together in the wake their parents' deaths. The lives of this family were detailed in "Leeway Cottage", and "Good-bye And Amen" is the next stage in this family's saga. Laurus and Sydney Moss were strong individuals. Their deaths leave three grown children. Eleanor is the oldest daughter, and probably the best adjusted. She married her college sweetheart, Bobbie, and has three children of her own. Monica, the middle child, was engaged in lifelong conflict with Sydney. Sydney picked her out early as an enemy and carried out a lifelong war against her. Monica is married to a charismatic preacher, Norman, with two grown children. Jimmy, the only son and youngest child, spent years rebelling against the family and its influence. He now lives out west, married to Josslyn, and has three children.

The book details the various family relationships: Parent and child, husband and wife, sister and brother, in-laws, aunts and uncles and nieces and nephews, cousins, old friends and current relationships. We see how patterns established early tend to play themselves out over the years. We see how each generation takes from the past and carries forward with new relationships and ways of handling the world. There are sibling rivalries, marital issues, yet underneath it all, we see the love that holds this family together over the generations.

I really enjoyed this book. I had not read the predecessor but plan to go back and read it, since this book was so intriguing. The method of narration was interesting. The entire book was told in first voice, but not one narrator as you might expect. Each character told their part of each event, and we got to see how each person's mind worked and what was important to them. Often an issue of major importance to one character was totally insignificant to another. Seeing this, it was easy to see how conflicts and misunderstandings occurred over the years. I enjoyed the sense of family over the generations, grounded in one spot regardless of where life had moved them. This book is highly recommended for readers of fiction and those interested in family relationships.

Reviews
This book is structured like a documentary--a series of apparent interviews with the characters and observers that tell the story, narrated by a mysterious observer. Every single character rang true to me, and the story seemed real as well. The book is a sequel of sorts to Leeway Cottage, though the book stands on its own--I had not read the first book. Three siblings and their families have met to divide up their late parents' personal effects. Each sibling, and each member of the family, and each non-family member observer clearly experiences and recalls events differently, uniquely, and it is a tour-de-force to so accurately capture so many different voices, from Maine summer people to various types of Episcopal parishioners to Californian Buddhists. This would be extremely good for a book club----endless discussions! I'm ordering the first book now.
Reviews
I love books about New England - Maine especially, so it was with a particular joy that I received this one. It is a gentler read than I was expecting - not a bad thing, but not "my" thing. Gutcheon's style is fun and I appreciated it. Perhaps in a different mindset (or more familiar with the writer's other works) I'd have a better feeling about it. I'd recommend the book merely for its excellent details of a particular style of living alone. Not a bad read on a lazy fall day!

The Other Friars: The Carmelite, Augustinian, Sack and Pied Friars in the Middle Ages (Monastic Orders)

The Other Friars: The Carmelite, Augustinian, Sack and Pied Friars in the Middle Ages (Monastic Orders)
Frances Andrews | 2006-10-19 00:00:00 | Boydell Press | 270 | World
In 1274 the Council of Lyons decreed the end of various 'new orders' of Mendicants which had emerged during the great push for evangelism and poverty in the thirteenth-century Latin Church. The Franciscans and Dominicans were explicitly excluded, while the Carmelites and Austin friars were allowed a stay of execution. These last two were eventually able to acquire approval, but other smaller groups, in particular the Friars of the Sack and Pied Friars, were forced to disband. This book outlines the history of those who were threatened by 1274, tracing the development of the two larger orders down to the Council of Trent, and following the fragmentary sources for the brief histories of the discontinued friaries. For the first time these orders are treated comparatively: the volume offers a total history, from their origins, spirituality and pastoral impact, to their music, buildings and runaways.FRANCES ANDREWS teaches at the University of St Andrews and is the author of The Early Humiliati (CUP 1999).

Integrable Systems (London Mathematical Society Lecture Note Series)

Integrable Systems (London Mathematical Society Lecture Note Series)
I. S. Novikov | 1981-11-30 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 276 | Mathematics
This book considers the theory of 'integrable' non-linear partial differential equations. The theory was developed at first by mathematical physicists but later mathematicians, particularly from the Soviet Union, were attracted to the field. In this volume are reprinted some fundamental contributions, originally published in Russian Mathematical Surveys, from some of the leading Soviet workers. Dr George Wilson has written an introduction intended to smooth the reader's path through some of the articles.

Airframe Structural Design: Practical Design Information and Data on Aircraft Structures

Airframe Structural Design: Practical Design Information and Data on Aircraft Structures
Michael Chun-Yung Niu; Mike Niu,Mike Niu | 2006-06-30 00:00:00 | Adaso Adastra Engineering Center | 611 | Engineering
This book represents several decades of data collection, research, conversations with different airframe specialists, plus the author's more than twenty years' experience in airframe structural design. From structural standpoint, the book is intended to be used as a tool to help achieve structural integrity according to government regulations, specifications, criteria, etc., for designing commercial or military transports, military fighters, as well as general aviation aircraft. It can be considered as a troubleshooting guide for airline structural maintenance and repair engineers or as a supplementary handbook in teaching aircraft structural design in college. This book is divided into a total of sixteen chapter and emphasizes itemized write-ups, tables, graphs and illustrations to lead directly to points of interest. The data can be used for designing and sizing airframe structures and, wherever needed, example calculations are presented for clarification.
Reviews
This book is essential for the student of airframe design, and nearly essential for an airframe design engineer or stress engineer in industry. The reason it is only 'nearly essential' for the latter is because 50% of your fellow structures engineers probably have the book, and 20% have it on the shelf above their cubicle on any particular day. So you could always just borrow theirs.

Narrow and wide-body transport category aircraft are used as most of the examples in the book, but the majority of the design data can be applied to smaller commercial and GA aircraft. The design of combat aircraft is not addressed with as much depth, but most of the information is still useful. Note that this is not a structural analysis textbook, but a design reference. Don't buy this book if you're looking for something that will teach you analysis of stiffened panels.

Niu focuses on detail design. For conceptual and preliminary design, Raymer's Aircraft Design is good. For the engineering student, be aware that it could be a while before you find yourself presenting in a preliminary design review, so don't pass up on a practical detail design reference.
Reviews
I think Mr. Niu's textbook provides a good discussion on the basic and fundamental knowledge required by the Structures engineer. It should be particularly helpful for the engineer new to the field. I did come across a few errors, but I have not noticed the myriad of errata that was rumoured. The text does not contain the depth of discussion on Structures/stress analysis that I wanted, like the industry-standard Bruhn, however the figures, charts, examples, and pictures are much clearer, and henceforth put things into perspective much better. This text, combined with Bruhn, gives me the reference material I need to perform my stress analysis tasks.
Reviews
Micahael Niu has filled a void that has existed since E.F. Bruhn last published his book thirty years ago. I recommend all of Niu's books, and this one is no exception. It is full of design details and recommendations that are difficult if not impossible to obtain without extensive experience in many companies. It is a book to be studied, however, not simply glanced at. The practicing designer should do well to periodically re-visit this book before undertaking a new assignment.

Unlike his other books on stress analysis, this is a design reference only, with few examples of calculations that provide further insight into the reasons for the design recommendations provided. It is thus a complementary book, and a good addition to any aircraft reference library.
Reviews
Used this book in structures I. Might be a fair reference....students.......don't bother with this one.
Reviews
This book is really well done, it has everything you ever
wanted to know about sizing an airplane... it has helped
me in my Airframe Structure class + project.
One thing though: beware that there are many errors
(typos and calculations) in the book.

Words and Thoughts: Subsentences, Ellipsis, and the Philosophy of Language

Words and Thoughts: Subsentences, Ellipsis, and the Philosophy of Language
Robert Stainton | 2006-09-11 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press, USA | 272 | English
It is a near truism of philosophy of language that sentences are prior to words. Sentences, it is said, are what we believe, assert, and argue for; uses of them constitute our evidence in semantics; only they stand in inferential relations, and are true or false. Sentences are, indeed, the only things that fundamentally have meaning. Does this near truism really hold of human languages? Robert Stainton, drawing on a wide body of evidence, argues forcefully that speakers can and do use mere words, not sentences, to communicate complete thoughts. He then considers the implications of this empirical result for language-thought relations, various doctrines of sentence primacy, and the semantics-pragmatics boundary. The book is important both for its philosophical and empirical claims, and for the methodology employed. Stainton illustrates how the methods and detailed results of the various cognitive sciences can bear on central issues in philosophy of language. At the same time, he applies philosophical distinctions with subtlety and care, to show that arguments which seemingly support the primacy of sentences do not really do so. The result is a paradigm example of The New Philosophy of Language: a rich melding of empirical work with traditional philosophy of language.

Ultrasonic and Advanced Methods for Nondestructive Testing and Material Characterization

Ultrasonic and Advanced Methods for Nondestructive Testing and Material Characterization
C. H. Chen | 2007-01-01 00:00:00 | World Scientific | 684 | Physics
Ultrasonic methods have been very popular in nondestructive testing and characterization of materials. This book deals with both industrial ultrasound and medical ultrasound. The advantages of ultrasound include flexibility, low cost, in-line operation, and providing data in both signal and image formats for further analysis. The book devotes 11 chapters to ultrasonic methods. However, ultrasonic methods can be much less effective with some applications. So the book also has 14 chapters catering to other or advanced methods for nondestructive testing or material characterization. Topics like structural health monitoring, Terahertz methods, X-ray and thermography methods are presented. Besides different sensors for nondestructive testing, the book places much emphasis on signal/image processing and pattern recognition of the signals acquired.

Coexisting with Large Carnivores: Lessons From Greater Yellowstone

Coexisting with Large Carnivores: Lessons From Greater Yellowstone
Tim Clark,Murray Rutherford,Denise Casey | 2005-05-05 00:00:00 | Island Press | 290 | Conservation

As in the rest of the United States, grizzly bears, wolves, and mountain lions in and around Yellowstone National Park were eliminated or reduced decades ago to very low numbers. In recent years, however, populations have begun to recover, leading to encounters between animals and people and, more significantly, to conflicts among people about what to do with these often controversial neighbors.

Coexisting with Large Carnivores presents a close-up look at the socio-political context of large carnivores and their management in western Wyoming south of Yellowstone National Park, including the southern part of what is commonly recognized as the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. The book brings together researchers and others who have studied and worked in the region to help untangle some of the highly charged issues associated with large carnivores, their interactions with humans, and the politics that arise from those interactions.

This volume argues that coexistence will be achieved only by a thorough understanding of the human populations involved, their values, attitudes, beliefs, and the institutions through which carnivores and humans are managed. Coexisting with Large Carnivores offers important insights into this complex, dynamic issue and provides a unique overview of issues and strategies for managers, researchers, government officials, ranchers, and everyone else concerned about the management and conservation of large carnivores and the people who live nearby.

Reviews
This book looks at how wolves, grizzly bears and mountain lions can coexist with the people who live around Grand Teton and Yellowstone national parks. The books is divided into three parts: the social context, case studies of the three species, and lessons for management. Overall, the contributors argue against the typical top-down plans of state and federal agencies, which draw up a management plan and then impose it on the community. Instead, they argue for more community participation in decisions and for practice-based management, with people trying a variety of strategies and then sharing those that work.

The contributors to this volume clearly know the material, and they present it well. The chapters on social context provide valuable background information, and the case studies were also very interesting. The management chapters were much less successful, however. The authors are mostly biologists, and to their credit they realize that they don't really know much social science. That's a handicap when discussing psychology, symbolism, group processes, and agency behavior. The authors are game enough, but it wouldn't have hurt to include a few chapters by people who study such things.

It's hard to argue against people participating in the decisions that shape their lives. But what if people are ill-informed or have demonstrably false beliefs? Many locals are convinced that wolves are going to eat their children, but no non-rabid North American wolf has ever killed a person. (I've encountered a wolf in the backcountry with a child beside me, so I'm not asking ranchers to do anything that I haven't done before.) The potential conflict between democratic processes and scientific knowledge is mentioned but not wrestled with as seriously as it should be.

In the end, the scientists in this book want their own views to triumph. All the authors argue for community dialogue so that locals who disagree with them will change their minds. None of the authors entertain the possibility that they might change their own minds after engaging in dialogue with ranchers. Given this asymmetry, why should ranchers play along?

The authors are also critical of federal and state agencies who use their power resources to try to impose their views on the community. At the same time, the biologists who wrote most of these chapters seem not to have thought critically about their own power resources - - knowledge, logical reasoning skills, and the like - - and how they are trying to impose their views on locals.

The contributors know (or suspect) these limitations of what they are doing. Without addressing them more deeply, however, the management section ends up being a lot of platitudes about dialogue and participation. In contrast, the sections on social context and the three large carnivore species were interesting and convincing.

The year is 1890. A ship is discovered adrift off the English coast, its crew missing, its murdered captain lashed to the wheel, and its only passanger is a sinister black dog. This impenetrable mystery is clearly a case for the inimitable Sherlock Holmes, but for the first time in his illustrious career the great detective is baffled.
