Torchwood: Into The Silence

Torchwood: Into The Silence
Sarah Pinborough | 2009-01-01 00:00:00 | Random House UK | 256 | Fiction Other
"Into The Silence" is a near Perfect Torchwood Novel. I have one very bizaare and petty complaint. It's the one thing and only thing that for me at times distracted me from imagining the whole thing happening live as if a televised episode. For reasons known only to Sara Pinsborough, it seems that every character entering or exiting the Hub, always enters or exists via the invisible lift in the center of the HUB. Maybe the front Tourist entrance was destroyed in one of the later episodes of Season two and I'm not recalling it. The books are set up, regardless of the author's style, to fit into and correspond to a certain point in the televised adventures. But whatever the reason, it seems that in this book, no one enters or leaves the HUB, ever, by the rolling "gear" entry.

Still, if this is my only issue (and questionably relevent), you'll be denying yourself a serious pleasure if you don't sit down and read Pinsborough's book. If you love Torchwood's proclivity for strange aliens - you'll love "Into The Silence".

Community Building on the Web : Secret Strategies for Successful Online Communities

Community Building on the Web : Secret Strategies for Successful Online Communities
| 2000-04-06 00:00:00 | | 0 | Web

There's been a marked shift in the philosophy of developing successful Web sites. The technologies (HTML, JavaScript, JavaServer Pages) no longer occupy center stage. Rather, functional objectives and the communities that grow up around them seem to be the main ingredient in Web site success. In her carefully reasoned and well-written Community Building on the Web, Amy Jo Kim explains why communities form and grow. More importantly, she shows (with references to many examples) how you can make your site a catalyst for community growth--and profit in the process. From marketing schemes like Amazon.com's Associates program to The Motley Fool's system of rating members' bulletin-board postings, this book covers all the popular strategies for bringing people in and retaining them.

Nine core strategies form the foundation of Kim's recommendations for site builders, serving as the organizational backbone of this book. The strategies generally make sense, and they seem to apply to all kinds of communities, cyber and otherwise. (One advocates the establishment of regular events around which community life can organize itself.) Some parts of Kim's message may seem like common sense, but such a coherent discussion of what defines a community and how it can be made to thrive is still helpful.

Read this book to help crystallize your thinking about community building, and to review strategies that work for real sites already. --David Wall

Topics covered: Strategies for designing Web sites around the needs of particular groups of people, attracting those people to your site, and motivating them to return frequently. Community identification, member profiling, community leadership, and organization (of information, time, and relationships) all receive ample coverage.

Extremely helpful -- shame it's out of print
I borrowed this from my local library and found it so helpful that I hunted down a used copy. It's not a technical reference, but it provides a great overview of the elements of online community, with authentic examples from existing communities (some of which, sadly, are now gone, but this was written before the bubble burst). Highly recommended if you are responsible for developing and supporting an online community, or if you are just interested in how thinking in online communities has been developing in the early days.

User review
Excellent
I thought this was an excellent book. Even though technologies change the concepts presented in this book are timeless.

User review
An excellent design guide
I believe everyone has a heart - whether in social or business settings - and that most people warms up to sensible `human touches` in a mechanistic environment created with computer-based systems.

Amy Jo Kim's book is a strategy book written with a little humor and a great understanding of what people crave in a community (note `community` and not `transaction`) - to belong, to interact and to be empowered. She gives many practical tips on how to attract and engage people in cyberspace.

At no time did Ms Kim give the impression that this book is supposed to be a step-by-step instructional manual.

User review
Best book by far for online community building
I'm an independent consultant on interactive technologies and web community building. I've read a number of books and articles giving advice about online communities, and none comes close to matching Amy Jo Kim's. Her book is the most exceptional in integrating human and technical considerations; describing how sites can launch, expand and evolve; giving lots of first-hand examples; and being an easy, fun read. I get the sense from her Naima company site that she's on the leading edge for design and technical approaches.

I'm personally working now with communities for performing artists and software developers. This book is the only one I'm willing to carry with me on all my customer consulting visits.

User review
What a bunch of fluff!
Read this book only if you want to build a kindler, gentler Web community. The style of the writing of this book was so chummy and `we are just women who want to share nice things and we don't know much about that technical man-stuff.` Yuk! If there was any real content to this book, I couldn't find it. I am building a business community on my Web-site but this book focues on social communities. Social communities certainly are valid, but I need something professional, not fluffy. Also, it totally ignored the technical tools I need to build the discussion boards and chat rooms.

Structural Analysis of Discrete Data with Econometric Applications

Structural Analysis of Discrete Data with Econometric Applications
Charles F. Manski, Daniel Mcfadden | 1981-01-01 00:00:00 | The MIT Press | 504 | Computers (Other)
This volume deals with parametric statistical inference on structural conditional probability models in which some or all of the endogenous variables are discrete valued. Within this broad theme the models posed and inferential questions addressed arise out of each author's work in econometric analysis. Taken together, these chapters provide a methodological foundation for the analysis of economic problems involving discrete data and chart the current frontiers of this subject. Some chapters are also relevant to other literatures concerned with structural analysis of discrete data: biometrics, psychometrics, sociometries, discrete multivariate analysis, and applied subjects such as finance, marketing, geography, and transportation. Workers in these areas will recognize that econometric methods for discrete data analysis have benefited from their own literatures. This volume is intended to be useful not only for econometricians but also for the wider community of researchers involved in the structural analysis of discrete data. In econometrics, research on models with discrete endogenous variables has two primary sources: discrete choice analysis, the study of behavior in situations where decision makers must select from ?lite sets 0 falternatives, and discrete simultaneous system modeling, the study of economic processes which may be described by systems of equations in which some endogenous variables are structurally or observationally discrete.

Practical Aspects of Trapped Ion Mass Spectrometry, Volume IV: Theory and Instrumentation

Practical Aspects of Trapped Ion Mass Spectrometry, Volume IV: Theory and Instrumentation
Raymond E. March, John F. J. Todd | 2010-01-01 00:00:00 | CRC Press | 950 | Physics
Reflecting the substantial increase in popularity of quadrupole ion traps and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometers, Practical Aspects of Trapped Ion Mass Spectrometry, Volume IV: Theory and Instrumentation explores the historical origins of the latest advances in this expanding field. It covers new methods for trapping ions, such as the Orbitrapâ„¢, the digital ion trap (DIT), the rectilinear ion trap (RIT), and the toroidal ion trap; the development and application of the quadrupole ion trap (QIT) and the quadrupole linear ion trap (LIT); and the introduction of high-field asymmetric waveform ion mobility spectrometry (FAIMS).

After a combined appreciation and historical survey of mass spectrometry and a discussion of how improved capabilities for microfabrication have led to interest in arrays of ion traps, the book examines the theory and practice of the Orbitrap mass analyzer, the rectangular waveform-driven DIT mass spectrometer, FAIMS, and ion traps with circular geometries. It next discusses ion accumulation for increasing sensitivity in FT-ICR spectrometry, a radio frequency-only-mode event for Penning traps in FT MS, and an FT operating mode applied to a 3D-QIT. The text then presents three behavioral aspects of quadrupole rod sets, before illustrating the development of the 3D-QIT in recent years. The final chapters explore photodissociation in ion traps and the chemical and photochemical studies of metal dication complexes in a 3D-QIT.

In this volume that spans twenty-one chapters, a stellar panel of leading experts and up-and-coming researchers presents a cohesive, global, and up-to-date view of the practical aspects of using trapped ion devices. A companion to Volume V: Applications of Ion Trapping Devices, the book authoritatively covers the theory involved as well as the instrumentation currently used in this dynamic field.

Empire of Gold: A History of the Byzantine Empire (The Modern Scholar) (Audiobook)

Empire of Gold: A History of the Byzantine Empire (The Modern Scholar) (Audiobook)
Professor Thomas F. Madden | 2008-01-01 00:00:00 | | 1 | Audio Books
In this epic course, esteemed university professor Thomas F. Madden offers a fascinating history of the remarkable culture and state that developed out of the ancient Roman Empire, particularly its eastern portion, throughout the Middle Ages. The story begins at the end of the Roman Empire in the third century AD and continues over the next one thousand years.
With incisive commentary, Professor Madden leads a discussion covering Justinian's re-conquest of the West, the great city of Constantinople, and the aftermath and influence of this extraordinary empire. The term "Byzantine" was invented by modern historians to identify the final millennium of the Roman Empire. By the third century and into the fourth century, there were changes in the Roman Empire so profound that historians during the Enlightenment began to call the period Byzantine rather than Roman. Most historians would place the beginnings of the Byzantine Empire roughly around the reign of the emperor Diocletian, who instituted widespread reforms to halt civil wars and economic decline.
One of the primary characteristics of the Byzantine Empire was the relegation of Rome to a place of honor only. Rome was not the capital of the Byzantine Empire. The capital, instead, was Constantinople. Therefore, power was based in the eastern Mediterranean. Next was the dominance of Greek culture and eastern perspectives, and a final characteristic was the integration of Christianity into the social and political fabric of the empire. Constantinople was the beating heart of the Byzantine Empire and the greatest city in the Western world at this time. Constantinople sat at the crossroads of the world and controlled east-west land traffic. Eventually, the fall of Constantinople to the Ottoman Turks reverberated across the Christian world. Europeans now saw a world in which nothing stood between them as the last remnant of free Christendom and the ever-growing powers of Islam.

Engineered Concrete Mix Design and Test Methods (Concrete Technology Series)

Engineered Concrete Mix Design and Test Methods (Concrete Technology Series)
Irving Kett | 1999-11-29 00:00:00 | CRC Press | 248 | Engineering
The Romans used an early type of concrete made with natural pozzuolanic cement more than 2,000 years ago. Today, Portland Cement Concrete is the most important material of construction. Yet few books, if any, exist that offer an in-depth analysis of the mixing and testing methods of this vital hydraulic cement. Until now that is. Engineered Concrete: Mix Design and Test Methods helps engineers, as well as laboratory technicians, grasp a better understanding of Portland Cement and Portland Cement Concrete. The book is divided into several sections, with the first, Mix Design Procedures, explaining how concrete batches are designed, mixed, and measured for various consistencies. Another section details the tests of the primary component materials of concrete other than water - namely Portland Cement, aggregates, and mortar - while the final section includes some of the fundamental concrete testing procedures for different strength parameters in conformity with the standards of the American Society for Testing Materials. While focusing solely on Portland Cement, the book also includes information on other hydraulic cementitious materials and additives because of their modern applications. Solidly researched and written, Engineered Concrete: Mix Design and Test Methods provides a clear understanding of mix design and testing of Portland Cement Concrete. As every civil engineer knows, it is the most versatile and important material of construction, and will probably remain so as far into the future as we can see.

Pirate State: Inside Somalia's Terrorism at Sea

Pirate State: Inside Somalia's Terrorism at Sea
Lawrence Hill Books | 2010-01-01 00:00:00 | Lawrence Hill Books | 224 | Non-fiction
In 2009, the United States was hit broadside by Somali pirates who attempted to capture the U.S. flag ship Maersk Alabama. Suddenly, the pirates were no longer a distant menace. They had thrust themselves onto the American stage.

Are the Somali pirates a legion of desperate fisherman attacking cargo ships and ocean cruisers to reclaim their waters? Or is piracy connected to crime networks and the madness that grips Somalia? What threats do pirates pose to international security?

To answer these questions, Peter Eichstaedt crisscrosses East Africa, meeting with pirates both in and out of prisons, talking with them about their lives, tactics, and motives. Ultimately, he comes face-to-face with a former fighter with Somalia’s brutal Islamic al-Shabaab militia. He discovers that piracy is a symptom of a much deeper problem: Somalia itself.

Pirate State explores the links between the pirates, global financiers, and extremists who control southern Somalia and whose influence extends across the Gulf of Aden into Yemen and connects to extremists in Pakistan and Afghanistan. The Somali pirates are desperate and dangerous men who will do just about anything for money, and Pirate State argues that turning a blind eye to piracy and the problems of Somalia is inviting a disaster of horrific proportions.

Toward an Integrated Arctic Observing Network

Toward an Integrated Arctic Observing Network
Committee on Designing an Arctic Observing Network,National Research Council | 2006-05-16 00:00:00 | National Academies Press | 128 | Conservation
Observable changes with regional and global implications, such as warming temperatures and reduced sea ice, are taking place across the Arctic. However, the record of Arctic observations suffers from incomplete geographic coverage and limited duration, and measurements are not well coordinated. This makes it difficult to comprehensively describe current conditions in the Arctic, let alone understand the changes that are underway or their connections to the rest of the Earth system.

The U.S. National Science Foundation asked for guidance to help design a pan-arctic observing network. This book outlines the potential scope, composition, and implementation strategy for an arctic observing network. Such an integrated, complete, and multidisciplinary environmental observing network will improve society's understanding of and ability to respond to ongoing systemic changes in the Arctic and its capability to anticipate, predict, and respond to future change both in the Arctic and around the globe. The network would build on and enhance existing national and international efforts and deliver easily accessible, complete, reliable, timely, long-term, pan-arctic observations. Because many potential components of the network already exist or are being planned, and because of the surge of activity during the International Polar Year, there is an immediate opportunity for major progress.

Roland Glowinski,Jean-Paul Zolesio | 2007-06-06 00:00:00 | Chapman and Hall/CRC | 472 | Engineering
Addressing algebraic problems found in biomathematics and energy, Free and Moving Boundaries: Analysis, Simulation and Control discusses moving boundary and boundary control in systems described by partial differential equations (PDEs). With contributions from international experts, the book emphasizes numerical and theoretical control of moving boundaries in fluid structure couple systems, arteries, shape stabilization level methods, family of moving geometries, and boundary control.

Using numerical analysis, the contributors examine the problems of optimal control theory applied to PDEs arising from continuum mechanics. The book presents several applications to electromagnetic devices, flow, control, computing, images analysis, topological changes, and free boundaries. It specifically focuses on the topics of boundary variation and control, dynamical control of geometry, optimization, free boundary problems, stabilization of structures, controlling fluid-structure devices, electromagnetism 3D, and inverse problems arising in areas such as biomathematics.

Free and Moving Boundaries: Analysis, Simulation and Control explains why the boundary control of physical systems can be viewed as a moving boundary control, empowering the future research of select algebraic areas.

Research Techniques in Animal Ecology

Research Techniques in Animal Ecology
Luigi Boitani,Todd Fuller | 2000-01-15 00:00:00 | Columbia University Press | 476 | Biology
The present biodiversity crisis is rife with opportunities to make important conservation decisions; however, the misuse or misapplication of the methods and techniques of animal ecology can have serious consequences for the survival of species. Still, there have been relatively few critical reviews of methodology in the field. This book provides an analysis of some of the most frequently used research techniques in animal ecology, identifying their limitations and misuses, as well as possible solutions to avoid such pitfalls. In the process, contributors to this volume present new perspectives on the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data. Research Techniques in Animal Ecology is an overarching account of central theoretical and methodological controversies in the field, rather than a handbook on the minutiae of techniques. The editors have forged comprehensive presentations of key topics in animal ecology, such as territory and home range estimates, habitation evaluation, population viability analysis, GIS mapping, and measuring the dynamics of societies. Striking a careful balance, each chapter begins by assessing the shortcomings and misapplications of the techniques in question, followed by a thorough review of the current literature, and concluding with possible solutions and suggested guidelines for more robust investigations.

Clausewitz and Contemporary War

Clausewitz and Contemporary War
Antulio J. Echevarria II | 2007-01-01 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press | 264 | History
While many scholars agree that Clausewitz's On War is frequently misunderstood, almost none have explored his methodology to see whether it might enhance our understanding of his concepts. This book lays out Clausewitz's methodology in a brisk and straightforward style. It then uses that as a basis for understanding his contributions to the ever growing body of knowledge of war. The specific contributions this study addresses are Clausewitz's theories concerning the nature of war, the relationship between war and politics, and several of the major principles of strategy he examined.

These theories and principles lie at the heart of the current debates over the nature of contemporary conflict. They also underpin much of the instruction that prepares military and civilian leaders for their roles in the development and execution of military strategy. Thus, they are important even in circles where Clausewitz is only briefly studied. While understanding On War is no more a prerequisite for winning wars than knowledge is a requirement for exercising power, Clausewitz's opus has become something of an authoritative reference for those desiring to expand their knowledge of war. By linking method and concept, this book contributes significantly to that end.

Spring, 1994, Washington, D.C. -- While the Clinton Administration grapples with its domestic policies, a sinister plot is being masterminded six thousand miles away in Baghdad. By using $100 million as bait and spinning a deadly web of corruption, forgery, and terror, Saddam Hussein seeks to embarrass the U.S. with the ultimate revenge: to steal a treasured historical document and then destroy it before the world's media -- on July 4, 1994.

The rights of the employee and the themes of employee ownership and participation have been central, recurring themes as the body of Catholic Social Thought has developed. There is now a unified corpus of official Catholic teaching that focuses the resources of moral theology and natural law theory on the important social issues of the day such as this. The description and explanation of the essential elements of Catholic Social Thought and its relationship to these themes helps the reader think about the place of the corporation in the economy and whether British and European corporate governance and labour law do what they should to put the employee at the centre of corporate governance.

The Politics of Social Protest: Comparative Perspectives on States and Social Movements (Social Movements, Protest and Contention)

The Politics of Social Protest: Comparative Perspectives on States and Social Movements (Social Movements, Protest and Contention)
J. Craig Jenkins,Bert Klandermans | 1995-04-26 00:00:00 | Univ Of Minnesota Press | 392 | Politics

The Politics of Social Protest was first published in 1995. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions.

Bringing together celebrated scholars from diverse traditions and backgrounds, The Politics of Social Protest focuses on the reciprocal relationships among social movements, states, and political parties. The volume is organized around three key questions: Why do citizens resort to the often risky and demanding strategy of using disruptive protest when other channels of political intervention appear to be available? What is the relationship between social protest movements and systems of political representation? And what is the impact of the structure and development of the state on social movements themselves?

Nationalizing the Russian Empire: The Campaign against Enemy Aliens during World War I (Russian Research Center Studies)

Nationalizing the Russian Empire: The Campaign against Enemy Aliens during World War I (Russian Research Center Studies)
Eric Lohr | 2003-05-15 00:00:00 | Harvard University Press | 256 | Economics
In this compelling study of the treatment of "enemy" minorities in the Russian Empire during the First World War, Eric Lohr uncovers a dramatic story of mass deportations, purges, expropriations, and popular violence. An imperial campaign initially aimed at restricting foreign citizens rapidly spun out of control, sweeping up Russian subjects of German, Jewish, and Muslim backgrounds and driving roughly a million civilians from one part of the empire to another, becoming one of the largest cases of forced migration in history to that time. Because foreigners and diaspora minorities were prominent among entrepreneurial and landowning elites, the campaign against them also became an explosive element in class and national tensions on the eve of the 1917 revolutions.

During the war, the imperial regime dropped its ambivalence about Russian nationalism and embraced unprecedented and radical policies that "nationalized" the economy, the land, and even the population. The core idea of the campaign--that the country needed to free itself from the domination of foreigners, internal enemies, and the exploitative world economic system--later became a central feature of the Soviet revolutionary model.

Based on extensive archival research, much in newly available sources, Nationalizing the Russian Empire is an important contribution to the study of empire and nationalism, the Russian Revolution, and ethnic cleansing.
Reviews

Reviews
Written for anyone interested in the First World War, this book tells the fascinating story of a major wave of ethnic cleansing that swept the eastern front between 1914-1917. "Nationalizing the Russian Empire" details how total war radicalized Russian politics, forcing Nicholas II to embrace a chauvinistic brand of populism that quickly undermined the imperial regime from within.

Focusing on tsarist attempts to neutralize the domestic threat posed by foreign nationals (the so-called "enemy aliens"), Lohr reveals how these measures evolved to affect many Russian subjects of German, Jewish and Muslim background. Entire populations were sent into internal exile. Land and property were sequestered and seized. Ethnic Russians were encouraged to think about their society in the most nativist of terms.

But instead of bolstering the empire, this campaign and the wave of interethnic hostility that it stirred up actually undermined the Romanovs' hold on power. Although the 1917 Russian Revolution is traditionally linked to military reversals at the front and class tensions in the rear, Lohr suggests that it was also the empire's clumsy attempt to engage in the modern politics of populist nationalism that compromised the stability of the society, the productivity of the economy, and the legitimacy of imperial rule itself.
