The Power of Optical/IR Interferometry: Recent Scientific Results and 2nd Generation Instrumentation: Proceedings of the ESO Workshop held in Garching, ... 4-8 April 2005 (ESO Astrophysics Symposia)
Andrea Richichi,Francoise Delplancke,Francesco Paresce,Alain Chelli | 2007-11-08 00:00:00 | Springer | 604 | Engineering

New interferometers as the VLTI, the Keck-I and CHARA along with their sophisticated instrumentation have provided new levels of accuracy, spectral resolution and access to various spectral bands from the optical to the thermal infrared. Investigations are now enabled on a wealth of astrophysical sources with unprecedented levels of angular resolution and sensitivity, producing a considerable body of new, exciting scientific results.

Celebrating the completion of the first phase of the VLTI development, the organisors of the ESO workshop "The Power of Optical/IR Interferometry", held in April 2005, saw an opportunity to invite the community to come together to review and discuss not just interferometers, but science with interferometers and its impact on astronomy as a whole. The workshop was also intended to showcase ideas and concepts for the future of interferometry, and in particular for the second generation of VLTI instrumentation.

This volume contains the proceedings of this workshop and serves as reference for astronomers working with optical and infrared interferometry.

Photonics Rules of Thumb: Optics, Electro-Optics, Fiber Optics and Lasers

Photonics Rules of Thumb: Optics, Electro-Optics, Fiber Optics and Lasers
John Miller,Ed Friedman | 2003-10-17 00:00:00 | McGraw-Hill Professional | 418 | Engineering
Text provides a compilation of 300 cost-saving photonics rules of thumb designed to save hours of design time and frustration. Updated with 100 new rules; includes lasers, detectors, optics of the atmosphere, and more. Previous edition: c1996. DLC: Photonics.
Reviews
I'm a great fan of lore books as opposed to textbooks or reference books. Lore books are the ones that contain the things that many people in the field may know, but which they had to learn the hard way, and I like them because they help me learn the easy way.

Miller and Friedman have written a fun and useful lore book, which has helped a lot of electro-optics people (including me) stay out of some nasty potholes. The book is inexpensive, and if you're building or specifying electro-optical systems of any sort, you should own it.

Note added 8/08:

I still think Miller and Friedman is a useful book, but at this point I'd want to qualify my paean above: there's a certain amount of sloppiness in the way some of these rules are presented that keeps it from being a fully reliable guide. (3-1/2 stars)

Reviews
Easy to use and practical for the engineer and physisist invovlved in optics projects. Will save you the embarassment of not knowing the limits of many common optical devices and systems.
Reviews
Very good book, with a lots of "short cuts" and good "back of an envelop" estimations However, high degree of subject understanding is required when practicing these short cuts. So be careful!

One topics omitted is that of Microscopy (one entry). There are a lots of Rules of Thumb that can help with resolution, magnification, NA or f/#, field of view, depth of field, depth of focus, working distance, etc. Perhaps these can be added to a subsequent edition of the book.

Reviews
Pricey consultants won't like this book! The authors have provided the photonics system design engineer with both
knowledge and wisdom. This is a very rare in technical books,
it is clearly a labor of love.

A Cosmopolitanism of Nations: Giuseppe Mazzini's Writings on Democracy, Nation Building, and International Relations

A Cosmopolitanism of Nations: Giuseppe Mazzini's Writings on Democracy, Nation Building, and International Relations
Giuseppe Mazzini | 2009-08-17 00:00:00 | Princeton University Press | 260 | World

This anthology gathers Giuseppe Mazzini's most important essays on democracy, nation building, and international relations, including some that have never before been translated into English. These neglected writings remind us why Mazzini was one of the most influential political thinkers of the nineteenth century--and why there is still great benefit to be derived from a careful analysis of what he had to say. Mazzini (1805-1872) is best known today as the inspirational leader of the Italian Risorgimento. But, as this book demonstrates, he also made a vital contribution to the development of modern democratic and liberal internationalist thought. In fact, Stefano Recchia and Nadia Urbinati make the case that Mazzini ought to be recognized as the founding figure of what has come to be known as liberal Wilsonianism.

The writings collected here show how Mazzini developed a sophisticated theory of democratic nation building--one that illustrates why democracy cannot be successfully imposed through military intervention from the outside. He also speculated, much more explicitly than Immanuel Kant, about how popular participation and self-rule within independent nation-states might result in lasting peace among democracies. In short, Mazzini believed that universal aspirations toward human freedom, equality, and international peace could best be realized through independent nation-states with homegrown democratic institutions. He thus envisioned what one might today call a genuine cosmopolitanism of nations.

Implicit Objects Computer Graphics

Implicit Objects Computer Graphics
| 2002-09-10 00:00:00 | | 0 | Computer Graphics

Implicit definition and description of geometric objects and surfaces plays a critical role in the appearance and manipulation of computer graphics. In addition, the mathematical definition of shapes, using an implicit form, has pivotal applications for geometric modeling, visualization and animation.

Until recently, the parametric form has been by far the most popular geometric representation used in computer graphics and computer-aided design. Whereas parametric objects and the techniques associated with them have been exhaustively developed, the implicit form has been used as a complementary geometric representation, mainly in the restricted context of specific applications. However, recent developments in graphics are changing this situation, and the community is beginning to draw its attention to implicit objects. This is reflected in the current research of aspects related to this subject. Employing a coherent conceptual framework, Implicit Objects in Computer Graphics addresses the role of implicitly defined objects in the following parts: mathematical foundations of geometric models, implicit formulations for the specification of shapes, implicit primitives, techniques for constructing and manipulating implicit objects, modeling, rendering and animation implicit objects.

Parliamentary Sovereignty and the Human Rights Act

Parliamentary Sovereignty and the Human Rights Act
Alison Young | 2008-12-05 00:00:00 | Hart Publishing | 198 | Civil Rights
The Human Rights Act 1998 is criticised for providing a weak protection of human rights. The principle of parliamentary legislative supremacy prevents entrenchment, meaning that courts cannot overturn legislation passed after the Act that contradicts Convention rights. This book investigates this assumption, arguing that the principle of parliamentary legislative supremacy is sufficiently flexible to enable a stronger protection of human rights, which can replicate the effect of entrenchment. Nevertheless, it is argued that the current protection should not be strengthened. If correctly interpreted, the Human Rights Act can facilitate democratic dialogue that enables courts to perform their proper correcting function to protect rights from abuse, whilst enabling the legislature to authoritatively determine contestable issues surrounding the extent to which human rights should be protected alongside other rights, interests and goals of a particular society. This understanding of the Human Rights Act also provides a different justification for the preservation of Dicey's conception of parliamentary sovereignty in the UK Constitution.

The American Language of Rights
Richard A. Primus | 2004-01-01 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 284 | Sociology
Richard A. Primus examines three crucial periods in American history (the late eighteenth century, the Civil War and the 1950s and 1960s) and demonstrates how the conceptions of rights prevailing at each of these times grew out of opposition to concrete political cases. In the first study of its kind, Primus highlights the influence of totalitarianism (in Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union) on the language of rights. This book will be a major contribution to contemporary political theory, of interest to scholars and students in politics and government, constitutional law, and American history.

Robust Control Design Using H Methods (Communications and Control Engineering Series)

Robust Control Design Using H Methods (Communications and Control Engineering Series)
Ian R. Petersen,Valery A. Ugrinovskii,Andrey V. Savkin | 2000-10-27 00:00:00 | Springer | 451 | Engineering
This book provides a unified collection of important, recent results for the design of robust controllers for uncertain systems. Most of the results presented are based on H¿ control theory, or its stochastic counterpart, risk sensitive control theory. Central to the philosophy of the book is the notion of an uncertain system. Uncertain systems are considered using several different uncertainty modeling schemes. These include norm bounded uncertainty, integral quadratic constraint (IQC) uncertainty and a number of stochastic uncertainty descriptions. In particular, the authors examine stochastic uncertain systems in which the uncertainty is outlined by a stochastic version of the IQC uncertainty description. For each class of uncertain systems covered in the book, corresponding robust control problems are defined and solutions discussed.

Multiscaling in Molecular and Continuum Mechanics: Interaction of Time and Size from Macro to Nano

Multiscaling in Molecular and Continuum Mechanics: Interaction of Time and Size from Macro to Nano
G.C. Sih | 2006-01-01 00:00:00 | Springer | 478 | Physics
The recent trend of miniaturization of devices and mechanics components has demanded a btter understanding of how macroscopic data are related to those at the microscopic scale or smaller.
The concept of multiscaling is to handle inhomogeneity that rises when material is viewed microscopically. A scale invariant concept that can quantify the degree of inhomgeneity is applied to overcome the diffuculty such that the methodology can be kept at a level that the practicing engineer can grasp and use. The model works much like a microscope that can magnify the results from the atomic to the micro, then to the meso and to the macro in an analytical fahsion. This provides a means for translating the experience in designing macroscopic size components to those at the lower scales.

Preparing for Weight Loss Surgery: Therapist Guide (Treatments That Work)

Preparing for Weight Loss Surgery: Therapist Guide (Treatments That Work)
Robin F. Apple,James Lock,Rebecka Peebles | 2006-08-31 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press, USA | 136 | Diets
Obesity has quickly become an American epidemic. People suffering from significant overweight often have to contend with a lifetime of significant comorbidities, social stigma, and lower quality of life. Recently, more and more people are undergoing weight loss surgery as a way to resolve these issues.

If you are working with pre- or post-operative bariatric surgery patients, your goal is to teach them the skills they need to ensure themselves a successful surgical outcome. After surgery, patients are required to adhere to a strict diet and the very specific recommendations of their surgical "team." Without a high level of commitment from the patient to follow these recommendations, the potential for maintained weight loss after surgery is very limited.

Preparing for Your Weight Loss Surgery, Therapist Guide contains a series of scientifically tested cognitive-behavioral techniques to help you prepare your patient for the post-operative challenges of creating radically changed eating and lifestyle habits. It provides instructions for teaching your patient basic problem-solving and cognitive restructuring methods that will change their negative thoughts and attitudes about food. Interactive forms including food records and checklists, body image journals, and homework assignments found in the corresponding patient workbook round out this comprehensive treatment package.

TreatmentsThatWorkTM represents the gold standard of behavioral healthcare interventions!

· Our corresponding workbooks contain psychoeducational information, forms and worksheets, and homework assignments to keep clients engaged and motivated

· A companion website (www.oup.com/us/ttw) offers downloadable clinical tools and helpful resources

· Continuing Education (CE) Credits are now available on select titles in collaboration with PsychoEducational Resources, Inc. (PER)
Reviews
There is really very little in this book that will specifically help therapists work with clients who have (or are considering) weight-loss surgery. The most common surgery today, the RNY, is not even listed among the procedure descriptions, and the book does not address some of the very specific emotional and psychological issues common to WLS patients.

Deducibility and Decidability

Deducibility and Decidability
R. R. Rockingham Gill | 1990-06-14 00:00:00 | Routledge | 170 | Philosophy
The classic results obtained by Godel, Tarski, Kleene, and Church in the early thirties are the finest flowers of symbolic logic. They are of fundamental importance to those investigations of the foundations of mathematics via the concept of a formal system that were inaugurated by Frege, and of obvious significance to the mathematical disciplines, such as computability theory, that developed from them.

Derived from courses taught by the author over several years, this new exposition presents all of the results with their original proofs and central concepts in a manner that is unified by a systematic grounding of the notion of effectiveness in the semantics of the existential quantifier. Logicians and non-mathematicians, repelled by detail which is not obviously relevant in the standard textbooks, will be able to reach the heart of the matter with a minimum of fuss.

Reviews
Do not fall for the other review like me. Generally I avoid books which have less than 10 reviews. But decided to try this as there are not many books available on ETF's.

This book is very badly written and poorly edited. It is neither for beginners nor for professionals. I am very disappointed that Wiley could publish such a book and some kind of experts (three of them) endorsing it on the back flap.

I want to give less than one star, but Amazon does not let me do that. If not for following reasons I would have given this book at least two stars.

1)About 100 pages (from page 165 to 268) dedicated to listing various ETF's available in market. These pages cover information like inception date, asset size, expense ratio, past returns for each of the ETF's. All this information is available fro free on many web sites and I do not understand why anyone would waste 100 pages in a book.

2) Short chapters with a story in each. At the end these meaningless stories the primary character decides to invest in ETF.

3)Same information is repeated in the text and side notes. Too many redundant side notes.

Reviews
Excellent book on ETFs. The book also provided a good background for researching ETFs.

Schooling, the Puritan Imperative, and the Molding of An American National Identity: Education's "errand Into the Wilderness" (Studies in Curriculum Theory Series)

Schooling, the Puritan Imperative, and the Molding of An American National Identity: Education's "errand Into the Wilderness" (Studies in Curriculum Theory Series)
Douglas McKnight | 2003-04-01 00:00:00 | Routledge | 184 | Education
Present-day America is perceived by many as immersed in a moral crisis, with national identity fractured and uncertainty and anxiety about the future. Public schools in this country are, historically and still today, the major institution charged with preserving and teaching the symbols of national identity and a morality that is the concrete expression of those symbols and the ideas for which they stand. A widespread belief is that only through schooling can America be saved from the current "crisis," but the schools have failed in this mission and must be reformed.

In this book, Douglas McKnight develops a historical interpretation of how the New England Puritans generated a powerful belief system and set of symbols that have fed American identity and contributed to preserving and perpetuating it into the present time. He explores the relationship between the purposes of education (and how this term has shifted in meaning) and the notion of an American identity and morality--rooted in the Puritan concept of an "errand into the wilderness"--that serves a particular sacred/secular purpose. The phrase "errand into the wilderness" is taken from a 1956 book by Perry Miller with this title, where it refers to the Puritan dream of creating a city in the wilderness (the North American Colonies) that would be a utopian community--a beacon for the rest of the world for how to organize and live in the ideal religious community.

Highly pertinent to the current debate about the purposes and crisis in education and in America, morality in schools, the cultural function of education, the changing nature of the language of education, the complex relation of schooling and national identity, this book explicates these elements within the American psyche by exploring the effects of the Puritan "symbolic narrative" at three different points in American history: Puritans during the 1600s and 1700s; the Gilded Age, when the urban Protestant middle class ascended to cultural dominance; and the present age.

Schooling, the Puritan Imperative, and the Molding of an American National Identity: Education's "Errand Into the Wilderness" makes an important contribution to the fields of curriculum studies and the history of education. It will interest students and scholars in these fields, as well as those in educational philosophy, religion and education, intellectual and social history, and American studies.

Better than the online documentation
I muddled my way through the docs on developer.[,,], floundered around for a while, and then picked up this book. I must admit, I'm glad I did. Although I'd say the first four chapters present essentially the same material you can get from the free online docs, they do so in a much more coherent way. The ordering of the material made a lot more sense than the online docs, too - for example, services aren't mentioned in this book until chapter 8 (whereas they're mentioned on `page` one of the online docs). This presentation resonated with me, and made everything `click`.

The organization of this book is, IMHO, the only useful way to organize a technical book, which is to explain the concepts behind some key point, followed by a working code example, which can be followed incrementally by the reader. Each example is presented in the simplest way possible, and subsequently refactored to use more complex (but more manageable) `convenience` features. This *is* a Wrox book - so there's almost as much code as there is discussion text. You won't get anything out of this book unless you plan to study the examples very carefully (and in many cases, dig down to figure out why certain code works a certain way - especially in the `advanced` chapter 11).

One concern I had, going in, was that the book was written for Android 1.0, but the current (as I write this) version of the Android SDK is 2.0. Fortunately, the differences were slight, and didn't make it hard to follow along at all. There were only really three noticable differences between the 1.0 SDK that the book was developed against and the 2.0 SDK I was following along with. Chapter 7 on the maps API was outdated (The book says you can use any string as your `maps API key`. That was true when the book was written, but is no longer the case - you now have to register with Google to run the maps demos.) Chapter 9 included a long section on `GTalk` which has actually been removed completely from the API (this is, in fairness, referenced as a possibility in the book), and the Bluetooth API has changed considerably since 1.0. Otherwise, the code samples all worked `out of the box`. Of course, there's no coverage of the NDK (Native Developer Kit), which was introduced with Android 1.5.

This book does a great job of presenting the overall end-to-end Android application development experience. One area where I thought coverage was lacking, though, was UI and layout management. This is probably the most important aspect of Android application development, yet there's very little content in this book about it. Also, this book is about Android, specifically, not about mobile application development. Terminology such as `Edge`, `3G`, `GPRS` and `LAC` are thrown around but not defined, and there's not much discussion regarding designing (or redesigning) for a mobile device - the author assumes you already know _what_ you want to do, and you're just trying to figure out how to do it in Android.

Poor index
This book will help you learn Android programming, if you know Java and have a little experience with UI. But the index is sparse, and inhibits using the book as a reference. All the classes and methods covered in the book ought to be indexed.

Good introduction to Android
Good introduction to Android. I liked the book, although need more time to read it carefully.

great book
This book is very good in it's explaining and samples.

I like to learn the concepts with good examples. And this is done really good in this book.

Dense and organized like spaghetti
This book was clearly written for seasoned developers. However, other books in this series are far more understandable. I'm really not sure why I did not like this book at all. I'll try to narrow it down. First, the writing style is not very engaging. It's also full of jargon that is never defined. For example, he uses the term URI, which has several component parts that he never defines. Worse, most of the code that he gives you to follow is never explained, at all. Not annotating code and using terms that you have never defined are a very bad trait. Third, alot of the material is a paraphrase of the android development documents, and there is really no new insight here. I think the core issue here is that we look for books not to sound like esoteric, terse documents, but this is what this book is. You will not learn how to program from this book. The code snippets jump all around and he tries to include everything about Android in this book which makes it seem just too much with incomplete treatment of many topics. I actually found the android tutorials less confusing.

Here is a typical example:

SimpleCursorAdapter

The SimpleCursorAdapter binds Views to cursors returned from

Content Provider queries. You specify an XML layout denition and then bind the value within

each column in the result set, to a View in that layout.

Upon re-reading it slowly and thoughtfully, this explanation does make sense. But we have not gone over content providers yet, and he has not talked about SQL queries with SQLLite in Android yet. Nowhere does he mention this, and again it's more like it's lifted from the android documentation without any explanation. This is an example of the style of writing that you'll be seeing. It's abstract, dense, and drab.

An example of the odd chapter organization is Chapter 5: Intents, broadcast receivers, adapters, and the internet. So we talk about intents and broadcast receivers, then view-related database interaction (which is what ch. 6 is all about), and then network communication (as opposed to putting it in its own chapter). It is like I am learning everything out of order with constant references back and forth (like a to do list example followed by an earthquake example, then going back to a to do list example). This is why I said it's dense and organized like spaghetti with no clear beginning and end.

Reviews
This book has a concise approach on a region with infinite aesthetic and functional variations. Good source of general information about facial plastic surgery. As an oculoplastic surgeon, I can say this book adds some ideas about the areas surrounding the one in which I mainly act but doesn't offer any detailed or deep knowledge about all the face - including oculoplastic surgery.

A very good, but not fantastic, result for the bold proposal to cover all aspects of the surgical face in only a thousand pages. The book is very very good, but I'm sure that the authors are better than it.

Reviews
This book is very good and it's answering my expectations. That's a very good choice!

Buying at Amazon.com was such a good experience to me since it was my first one (and I live in Brazil). I received the book some days before concerted.

Indian Herbalogy of North America: The Definitive Guide to Native Medicinal Plants and Their Uses

Indian Herbalogy of North America: The Definitive Guide to Native Medicinal Plants and Their Uses
Alma R. Hutchens | 1991-08-27 00:00:00 | Shambhala | 382 | Alternative Medicine

Reviews
This author did due diligence in research and drove thousands of miles to codify how three widely diverse societies developed a working medical and health improvement strategy based on sustainable plant life. This is the scientific parallel to Ayla in Jean Auel's splendid books on early tribal life. A unique achievement. Add it to your Foxfire series reading collection.
Reviews
Because this not only identifies the native north american indian use, but also the Russian influence of the same herbs and application, it is both accurate and invaluable as a reference tool. Out of all my herbology books, I refer to this one most often for practical application, and after 15 years it still serves better than current reference material.
Reviews
This herbal book was good, yet could have been better.Firstly, the title is misleading. The book is more about the current medicinal methods and uses rather than what the traditional uses and beliefs were. There is very little information about Native Americans and how they used their herbs. There is more attention to the 'Russian experience' and Chinese studies ,in the area of herbalogy. But,little concern for what the Indian shaman did with their plants and herbs.Secondly, the sketches are excellent.Yet,only half are Native American. The rest are russian herbs and plants. This is not a bad book, yet it is a misnomer to label it 'Indian Herbalogy'.Lastly,it is rather weak to pass it off as an all-natural native pagan book. The authoress was quite influenced by Nicholas Culpepper, the famed father of classical herbalogy.Maybe Alma Hutchens is Old School, like herbalist Clarence Meyer.Or she feared her book would not have mass readership,if she had taken a heathen earthy tone.In Culpepper's tome,he points out the biblical verse of God's acceptance of Mankind using the plants and herbs of the Good Earth. At any rate,i would recommend reading this fine herbal book as an addendum to one's herbal studies. This book has many interesting facts and histories, yet not so connected to Native Indian shamanic herbal wisdom.
Reviews
Ms. Hutchens has put together an amazing collection of herbal uses from the First Nations. This is one book that should be on the bookshelf of every budding herbalist.
Reviews
This book gets serious stars taken off for unprofessionalism. It's one thing if the author can't spell, but her editor is supposed to catch her errors. This important practice can't hope to be taken seriously if the editor couldn't even spell the title of the book. The correct spelling is "herbology" and means the study of herbs. Geez.

Differential Information Economies (Studies in Economic Theory)

Differential Information Economies (Studies in Economic Theory)
Dionysius Glycopantis,Nicholas C. Yannelis | 2004-12-22 00:00:00 | Springer | 650 | Economics
One of the main problems in current economic theory is to write contracts which are Pareto optimal, incentive compatible, and also implementable as a perfect Bayesian equilibrium of a dynamic, noncooperative game. The question arises whether it is possible to provide Walrasian type or cooperative equilibrium concepts which have these properties. This volume contains original contributions on noncooperative and cooperative equilibrium notions in economies with differential information and provides answers to the above questions. Moreover, issues of stability, learning and continuity of alternative equilibria are also examined.

Mongols, Turks, And Others: Eurasian Nomads And The Sedentary World (Brill's Inner Asian Library)

Mongols, Turks, And Others: Eurasian Nomads And The Sedentary World (Brill's Inner Asian Library)
Reuven Amitai,Michal Biran | 2004-12-30 00:00:00 | Brill Academic Publishers | 550 | Asia
The interaction between the Eurasian pastoralnomads - most famously the Mongols and Turks -and the surrounding sedentary societies is a major theme in world history. Nomads were not only raiders and conquerors, but also transmitted commodities, ideas, technologies and other cultural items. At the same time, their sedentary neighbours affected the nomads, in such aspects as religion, technology, and political culture. The essays in this volume use a broad comparative approach that highlights the multifarious nature of nomadic society and its changing relations with the sedentary world in the vicinity of China, Russia and the Middle East, from antiquity into the contemporary world.
