Nonlinear Programming: Sequential Unconstrained Minimization Techniques (Classics in Applied Mathematics)

Nonlinear Programming: Sequential Unconstrained Minimization Techniques (Classics in Applied Mathematics)
Anthony V. Fiacco,Garth P. McCormick | 1987-01-01 00:00:00 | Society for Industrial Mathematics | 226 | Algorithms
A reprint of the original volume, which won the Lanchester Prize awarded by the Operations Research Society of America for the best work of 1968. Although out of print for nearly 15 years, it remains one of the most referenced volumes in the field of mathematical programming.

Recent interest in interior point methods generated by Karmarkar's Projective Scaling Algorithm has created a new demand for this book because the methods that have followed from Karmarkar's bear a close resemblance to those described. There is no other source for the theoretical background of the logarithmic barrier function and other classical penalty functions.

Analyzes in detail the "central" or "dual" trajectory used by modern path following and primal/dual methods for convex and general linear programming. As researchers begin to extend these methods to convex and general nonlinear programming problems, this book will become indispensable to them.

Villa Eden: The Country-House on the Rhine

Villa Eden: The Country-House on the Rhine

Show Excerpt
d a distant farewell with his hat, and with a rapid step went up the hill behind the ruins of the castle, overlooking the convent. He continued sitting there for a long time, gazing fixedly at the convent on the island. He heard songs from maiden voices, saw the long row of windows brightly lighted up, and at last, looking up to the stars, he exclaimed, "O mother!" What did that mean? Perhaps his mother had said to him, that at some time or other a wonderful experience would come over him. The nightingale in the thicket sang on unceasingly, and the young man listened to the song, but would gladly have silenced it in order that he might hear more plainly the singing of the children in the convent, who with magic power had conjured up a dream of heaven into their actual life, and for one hour become choirs of singing angels. "Alone in the spring night, amidst the Castle-ruins with beating heart! Can it be I?" said the young man to himself.

The Encyclopedia of Ethnic Groups in Hollywood

The Encyclopedia of Ethnic Groups in Hollywood
James Robert Parish | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | Facts on File | 640 | Performing Arts
The Encyclopedia of Ethnic Groups in Hollywood is an exhaustive reference to the treatment and progress of five different ethnic groups in the world's most visible industry. This book explores the various stereotypes propagated by television and the movies, as well as the breakthrough shows and films that shattered them. The text is divided into five sections: African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans, Jewish Americans, and Native Americans. Each section examines the representation of that particular ethnic group both on-screen and behind the camera. Presented in an easy-to-use, A-to-Z format, each comprehensive section offers an account detailing landmark films, movies, and television series relevant to that group; biographical entries covering key personalities; and topical entries covering key themes, genres, and fictional characters. An extensive index helps guide students, researchers, and general readers.
Reviews
Mary Jane Alexander, I am a New York film critic and enthusiast.

Film historian and authority James Robert Parish has done it again! "The Encyclopedia of Ethnic Groups in Hollywood," like all of Mr. Parish's well-regarded books, is comprehensive, thoroughly accurate and immensely readable. The sheer research is astounding and Mr. Parish uncovers the many fascinating tidbits that enliven film history. This is a book that is a must not only for every film and media library, but also for the general reader and film fan who wants is interested in the careers, lives and place in film history of the many ethnic stars who have thrilled us on screen. Bravo.

Also recommended: The Hollywood Songsters; Hollywood Divaas; and Hollywood Bad Boys
Reviews
This is a wonderfully concise, detailed, and helpful general reference source for anyone researching ethnicity in the major films, television shows and performers of the past century. The Encyclopedia of Ethnic Groups in Hollywood is easy to read, gives only the important highlights of each title and personality, and is well-indexed. The photographs in the book are nostalgic and illustrative. It's all in here -- the breakthroughs, the award winners, the important firsts, as well as other contributions that make Hollywood history and today's Hollywood unique.
Reviews
The movies have always help guide and shape moviegoers into an an understanding of who they are, where they're from, and where they're going. But much of the vast American public has been virtually invisible on the screen -- which is why this book is so valuable. Our overlooked ethnic groups -- African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans, Jewish Americans, and Native Americans -- now have a wonderful reference source to help them understand who they are, where they're from, where they're going. This encyclopedia may be a bit pricey for average bookbuyers (where's the cheaper paperback edition?), but it will be criminal if every library in the country doesn't make it readily available.
Reviews
Jim Parish has outdone himself with this voluminous, impeccably researched work which is a concept long overdue in the publishing world. With the fine work of Allan Taylor, he has created a wonderful tome and a reference book which will be quite useful as well as enjoyable to read. Well worth the money! Cough up! You'll be happy you did.
Reviews
By Hollywood, I expected the author to concentrate his efforts on films, which would have been fine in and of itself. But I was surprised (pleasantly) to see the detail into which he looks at the presentation of ethnic groups on television as well. This is the book that should be required reference material on every course in pop culture and in film studies as well. But don't let that scare you away from reading it. The book is written in a style that everyone can enjoy. It's one of those books once you pick up and start flipping through, you spend hours going through.

Better Understanding of the Campylobacter Conundrum

Better Understanding of the Campylobacter Conundrum
Amelie Garenaux,Celine Luchetti-miganeh,Gwennola Ermel | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | Nova Science Publishers | 151 | Internal Medicine
Campylobacter jejuni is a microaerophilic and thermophilic pathogen genetically close to Helicobacter pylori. It represents one of the most of concern emerging food pathogens, as it is one of the primary sources of human enteritis, in developed as well as in developing countries. It is also a source of rare but serious neuropathies. Interest in this bacterium has constantly been growing during the last decade, since many antibiotic resistant strains are emerging. The sequencing of C. jejuni genome has revealed a small genome in which a lot of regulation systems are fully understood in well-studied bacteria were absent. To infect humans, a pathogen has to survive different environmental stresses and attacks of the immune system, and also be able to express its virulence factors. The Campylobacter conundrum is the latter: how does this microaerophilic (=sensitive to oxygen) bacterium, owning a small genome and lacking most of the well-known regulation systems, still constitute a hazard for humans? From what is known about C. jejuni genome, this book proposes to draw a parallel between on the one hand the different mechanisms and regulation pathways existing, and on the other hand stress resistance and virulence of this emerging food pathogen.

Memory, War and Trauma

Memory, War and Trauma
Nigel C. Hunt | 2010-07-05 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 244 | Post-traumatic Stress Disorder
Many millions of people are affected by the trauma of war. Psychologists have a good understanding of how experiences of war impact on memory, but the significance of external environmental influences is often disregarded. 'Memory, War and Trauma' focuses on our understanding of the psychosocial impact of war in its broadest sense. Nigel C. Hunt argues that, in order to understand war trauma, it is critical to develop an understanding not only of the individual perspective but also of how societal and cultural factors impact on the outcome of an individual's experience. This is a compelling book which helps to demonstrate why some people suffer from post-traumatic stress while other people don't, and how narrative understanding is important to the healing process. Its multidisciplinary perspective will enable a deeper understanding of both individual traumatic stress and the structures of memory.

An Introduction to Families, Deformations and Moduli

An Introduction to Families, Deformations and Moduli
T. E. Venkata Balaji | 2010-01-01 00:00:00 | Universitatsverlag Gottingen | 208 | Mathematics
Moduli Theory is one of those areas of Mathematics that has fascinated minds from classical to modern times. This has been so because it reveals beautiful Geometry naturally hidden in questions involving classification of geometric objects and because of the profound use of the methods of several areas of Mathematics like Algebra, Number Theory, Topology and Analysis to achieve this revelation. A study of Moduli Theory would therefore give senior undergraduate and graduate students an integrated view of Mathematics.

Broadly speaking, Moduli Theory involves the discovery of rich geometric structures on the set of isomorphism (or suitable equivalence) classes of familiar objects from Geometry, such as manifolds, varieties and bundles over them. This book is a humble and basic introduction to the fundamental notions of family and deformation, together with their role in the construction of moduli spaces. The attempt is to capture the genesis of the main denitions and results of the theory from heuristic ideas. This is done by fostering a mathematical intuition that is grounded in some basic (though nontrivial) motivating examples. These examples serve not only to point to the kind of results one can expect, but also to pathologies that commonly arise in the construction of moduli spaces.

The goals of this book are:
(1) to explain the notion of a family and construct nontrivial examples of families;
(2) to explain the notion of an infinitesimal deformation of complex structure;
(3) to compute all the infinitesimal deformations of any complex torus (of arbitrary dimension) and of any holomorphic line bundle of degree zero on a compact Riemann surface;
(4) to explain the definitions and the major results of the Theory of Local Moduli of Kodaira-Spencer and apply these results to justify Riemann's formula for the number of moduli of a compact Riemann surface;
(5) to explain Kuranishi's Theorem and to give some of its applications;
(6) to explain the notion of a local moduli space and give some examples;
(7) to explain the notion of a moduli problem, of a coarse moduli space and of a fine moduli space;
(8) to construct the fine moduli space from local moduli spaces for the problem of moduli of holomorphic line bundles of degree zero on a compact Riemann surface;
(9) to construct the coarse moduli space from local moduli spaces for the problem of moduli of elliptic curves over the field of complex numbers;
(10) to present the Theory of Moduli as a topic whose study draws from and enriches diverse areas of Mathematics.

Ecotourism

Ecotourism
Stephen Wearing,John Neil | 1999-10-26 00:00:00 | Butterworth-Heinemann | 163 | Economics
'Ecotourism' outlines the phenomenon of Ecotourism; its sources and its development as a concept.
Conservation issues are now at the forefront of public opinion - Nature is calling us to its wilds and we are responding in droves. The decline of natural rainforests, loss of endangered species, global warming and land degradation have galvanised public support for conservation. The interest in Ecotourism and nature-orientated tourism has coincided with this worldwide concern

Using relevant case studies, 'Ecotourism' examines the potential positive social and environmental benefits of Ecotourism and is ideal for both students of tourism and practitioners within the tourism industry.
'Ecotourism' will also be of interest to environmental groups, land managers, academics and planners. Indeed anyone interested in examining what Ecotourism is and how it may hold the potential to solve or at least mitigate several of the great problems of our age. An example being arguably the greatest of these dilemmas: to satisfy human needs for employment, income and economic development, while at the same time protecting the environment.
Stephen Wearing and John Neil are both lecturers at the School of Tourism Studies, University of Technology, Sydney, Australia.

Japanese Fixed Income Markets: Money, Bond and Interest Rate Derivatives

Japanese Fixed Income Markets: Money, Bond and Interest Rate Derivatives
Jonathan A. Batten,T.A. Fetherston,P.G. Szilagyi | 2006-12-14 00:00:00 | Elsevier Science | 458 | Economics
The Japanese capital markets were liberalized, decontrolled and increasingly opened to foreign participation in the 1970's. The fixed income market particularly expanded to finance the government fiscal deficits commencing in 1975. However, growth in the non-Government side of the market for Japan has been a more recent phenomenon and a goal of policymakers in Japan and Asia since 1997.

These markets are now second only to those in the United States and dominate the issuance market in the Asian Pacific region. The latter does not surprise since Japan is second only to the United States in debt issuance globally and in recent years has had one of the world's largest government bond and interest rate derivatives markets. However, these relationships are not static and the portfolio flows between Japanese fixed income markets, the Asia Pacific region and the rest of the world. This remains a matter of considerable importance for institutional investors, central banks and governments.

The efforts of the authors who have contributed to this volume will measurably add to our understanding of the Japanese Fixed Income Market. This volume is structured into four parts: Macroeconomic Environmental Development, Credit Risk Measures and Management, Interest Rate Analysis and Market Integration sections. There are seventeen chapters in the volume with thirty-one authors, many of whom are prominent in academic and practitioner aspects of the Fixed Income markets field, contributing their insight to this volume.

Nanotechnology Applications for Clean Water: Solutions for Improving Water Quality

Nanotechnology Applications for Clean Water: Solutions for Improving Water Quality
Mamadou Diallo, Jeremiah Duncan, Nora Savage, Anita Street, Richard Sustich | 2009-01-01 00:00:00 | William Andrew | 700 | Environmental Engineering
The World Health Organization in 2004 estimated approximately 1.1 billion people did not have access to clean water and that 35% of Third World residents died from water-borne illnesses. While the situation is grim, recent advances strongly indicate that many of the current water quality problems can be addresses - and potentially resolved - using nanotechnology.

Nanotechnology is already having a dramatic impact on research in water quality and Nanotechnology Applications for Clean Water highlights both the challenges and the opportunities for nanotechnology to positively influence this area of environmental protection.

Here you will find detailed information on breakthroughs, cutting edge technologies, current research, and future trends that may affect acceptance of widespread applications. The first four parts of the book cover specific topics including using nanotechnology for clean drinking water in both large scale water treatment plants and in point-of-use systems. For instance, recent advances show that many of the current problems involving water quality can be addressed using nanosorbents, nanocatalysts, bioactive nanoparticles, nanostructured catalytic membranes, and nanoparticle enhanced filtration. The book also discusses existing technologies and future potential for groundwater remediation, pollution prevention, and sensors. The final part discusses the inherent societal implications that may affect acceptance of widespread applications.

Over 80 leading experts from around the world share their wealth of knowledge in this truly unique reference. Institutions such as Center for the Purification of Water and Systems (Univ. of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign); UCLA Water Technology Center; Carnegie Mellon University, University of Kentucky; The University of Western Ontario; Pacific Northwest National Laboratory; National Institute for Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (Japan), Munasinghe Institute for Development (Sri Lanka) and the Woodrow Wilson Center for Scholars are just a few of the knowledge centers represented in this book.

Water quality is a serious, global issue in which government bodies and scientific communities face many challenges in ensuring clean water is available to everyone. Nanotechnology is already showing dramatic results, and this book is an attempt to share current technologies and future possibilities in reaching this goal.

Not enough information of value
I am disappointed with this book.

The first complaint is that it doesn't include the IPod Video, yet it sells itself as having the latest information.

The second complaint is that it includes way too much information on previous generations of IPods. I don't care about first and second generation controls and think this information just makes it harder to get through the book.

The third complaint is that there isn't very much information that you don't get from just using the IPod. In about ten minutes, you know what the menu options are and it isn't terribly hard to figure out how to select a playlist, for example. I was hoping for more in-depth information like cool things to do with the hard disk without having to go through ITunes.

The basic problem I have with this book is that it's trying to be the missing manual, conveniently leaving out the kind of access that Apple doesn't really want you have. If it didn't include so much information on previous generations of the IPod, it might have been a decent manual. Now its all the manuals shoved together.

iPod manual does the job
Since Apple doesn't include an iPod manual for us older generation linear types who actually like to read the instructions, this book will do fine. Like most computer books it's a bit padded out, but it gave me the information I wanted.

The Routledge Companion to Postmodernism (Routledge Companions)

The Routledge Companion to Postmodernism (Routledge Companions)
Stuart Sim | 2001-12-14 00:00:00 | Routledge | 416 | Postmodernism
What is 'deconstruction'? What authors are considered 'postmodern novelists'? The Routledge Companion to Postmodernism combines a series of fourteen in-depth background chapters with a body of A-Z entries to create an authoritative, yet readable guide to the complex world of postmodernism. Following full-length articles on postmodernism and philosophy, politics, feminism, lifestyles, television, and other postmodern essentials, readers will find a wide range of alphabetically-organized entries on the people, terms and theories connected with postmodernism, including: Peter Ackroyd; Jean Baudrillard; Chaos Theory; Death of the Author; Desire; Fractals; Michel Foucault; Frankfurt School; Generation X; Minimalism; Poststructuralism; Retro; Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak; and Trans-avant-garde. Students interested in any aspect of postmodernist thought will find this an indispensable resource.
Reviews
Having purchased the massive Routledge Companion to Aesthetics, I was expecting another book of that stature. To my pleasant surprise, this book is a wonderfully smaller introduction to the concept of Postmodernism. The structure of this book, with its history and cultural context forming the first part followed by the relevant people/terms/meanings in the second part is brilliant. I no longer have to sit in class with that glazed look that every student seems to get when trying to absorb 'stuff' that seems to whizz over everyone's head. This book has become my new best friend when I am uni. (the companion to Aesthetics is too heavy to carry-that stays by my bedside!)
Reviews
This is the single most essential volume for anyone who wants to familiarize his or herself with the huge field of postmodern theory. Most people realize that postmodern theory is incredibly controversial with opinions ranging from the positive to the negative to some theorists who claim postmodernism doesn't even exist. Some of my professors have gone as far as to claim that the term "postmodern" itself is meaningless, that it cannot be defined. Anyone who reads this book will understand exactly why that is a ridiculous statement: there are plenty of answers available and even if there is a multiplicity of interpretations and understandings, there *are* definite, defensible positions and you'll discover them here.

I must stress that this is excellent as an introduction: of course no one would use this as their only source on postmodern philosophy. The point is, this book introduces you to the influential theorists, their ideas, and their work. Following that, you can go and explore them on your own. The best thing about this book is that it gives you a manageable overview without reducing a rich field of discourse to a few key ideas and people. There are shorter guides to postmodernism, but they're typically the work of a single author from a single perspective. Stuart Sim does a great job compiling articles and dictionary entries here.

The articles are largely descriptive so you don't need to worry about hidden agendas and biased information. The writing style is conducive to understanding and communication. Concepts learned here will help you tackle the more difficult primary sources later when you're ready for more specific readings.

It's also a great reference. Even after studying postmodern philosophy for a few years, I still return to this book to remind myself of certain facts. I've recommended it to a number of friends who found it very useful as well. This is great for students and for those with a casual interest in continental philosophy, postmodern theory, or our contemporary world. I highly recommend this.
Reviews
The Companion is a comprehensive collection of essays on this complex topic. The first part addresses different aspects of Postmodernist thought, creating a complete picture. I found especially useful the last part, a glossary of terms and key figures of the postmodern movement. A fully enjoyable amd instructive read!

Reviews
When I first ordered Stuart Sim's `Routledge Companion to Postmodernism', I was expecting a narrative discourse on postmodernism, most from a philosophical standpoint. What I received was quite different, but quite wonderful, and an indispensable resource as I study theology and philosophy as they relate to postmodern ideas.

The text, edited by Sim, who is a professor of English Studies at the University of Sunderland, has dozens of contributors drawn from the academy and professional ranks. They provide an insight in the broad and varied diversity of postmodernism, which is far from being a monolithic enterprise. There are two main sections to the book - first, a series of 14 essays on sources and developments in modernism, and the second, a critical dictionary of names and terms.

The first section of essays includes essays such as Postmodernism and Philosophy, Postmodernism and Politics, etc. The topics deal with feminism, science and technology, art and architecture, many aspects of popular and current culture (cinema, television, literature, music, lifestyles), as well as the general idea of postmodernity vis-à-vis modernity and traditions of criticism and dissension. Each of the essays is interesting and engaging, brief enough to be read in one sitting, yet thorough enough to be the sort the interested reader will return to again. Postmodernism can be defined in various ways, but Sim gives the definition out of Lyotard as the rejection of `grand narratives' and universal theories -- the sort that science, metaphysics, mathematics, and other such disciplines have tried since the Enlightenment (or even further back) to support and impose. There is a strong antifoundational sense to postmodernism, that often makes it controversial.

One of the really useful aspects of the essays is that the text includes words (names, terms) in boldface when they are included in the general dictionary in the second section. There are brief biographical sketches of key intellectual players in postmodernism (Derrida, Lyotard, Barthes, Baudrillard, Foucault, etc.) as well as creative and artistic types (Pound, Carter, Rushdie, Vonnegut, etc.) contained, as well as figures who, while not postmodern themselves (Kant, etc.) nonetheless provide necessary and significant pieces to the postmodern project.

Rare is the book that will contain references to both Derrida and Heidegger's destruction/deconstruction as well as MTV and the rock band U2. This is truly postmodern! The cross-referencing makes this book a real pleasure to use; both the index and the bibliography make this of real value to scholars as well. The text is difficult at times (given the subject matter, there is no escaping that) but not needlessly so; the careful reader will find value regardless of the lack of previous critical and philosophical training.

I began my interest in postmodernism as a piece of theological investigations arising out of narrative theology. This book goes much further afield than that narrow disciplinary focus, but I am grateful for that, for it opens up a broad vista on the subject, and asks questions that need to be addressed in intellectual pursuits and cultural/creative tasks across the board.
Reviews
This book is of great value to readers struggling to familiarize themselves with the postmodern. The first half of the book provides interesting explorations of how the postmodern is at work in culture. The latter half is of particular value to anyone unfamiliar with the multitude of artists and theorists whose work and thought is significant to the postmodern. The collection of entries in the dictionary serve anyone reading primary postmodern texts well by opening up otherwise opaque allusions.

Andy Duncan | 2007-01-01 00:00:00 | Zebra | 120 | Education
This story, an alternate history masterpiece, is told from the point of view of Korolev, the "Chief" who managed the most crucial years of the secret Soviet space program, and his assistant and eventual successor, Aksyonov. The story spans from World War II, when Korolev was released from a prison camp to design rockets, to 1997 and the Mir space station. This endearing story won the 2002 Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award for best short science fiction of the year. This unabridged reading by Jared Doreck, on two audio CDs, is 132 minutes in length.

Particle Detection with Drift Chambers (Particle Acceleration and Detection)

Particle Detection with Drift Chambers (Particle Acceleration and Detection)
Walter Blum, Werner Riegler, Luigi Rolandi | 2008-10-10 00:00:00 | springer | 448 | Physics
This volume presents a thorough introduction to the theory and operation of drift chambers, one of the most important modern methods of elementaryparticle detection . The topics, presented in a text-book style with many illustrations, include the basics of gas ionization, by particles and by lasers, drift of electrons and ions in gases and signal creation and discuss in depth the fundamental limits of accuracy and the issue ofparticle identification.

The book also surveys all types of drift chambers and the various drift-chamber gases in use. The calculation of the device parameters and physical processes are presented in some detail, as is all necessary background material. Thus the treatment, well beyond addressing the specialist in the field, is well suited to graduate physics students and nuclear engineers seeking a both thorough and pedagogical introduction to the field.

The second edition presents a completely revised, updated and expanded version of this classic text. In particular, significantly more material on electronic signal creation, amplification and shaping has been added.

Reviews
The material in the text is very comprehensive, and covers all facets of the curriculum requirements. The downside is the

accompanying CD that has (2) practice exams. It contains multiple errata, mainly typos and incorrect answers to approximately 10-15 questions. Again, great text, can be an excellent reference; poor CD.
Reviews
I purchased this book instead of the O'sullivan's and Giles' review books. I found this book lacked the necessary information that needed to be applied on the boards. I was given the O'sullivan's and Giles' after a couple of months using the dutton and ended up being blown away w/ how much more in depth and will organized both of these books were compared to the dutton. The O'sullivan is very detailed oriented and has an excessive amount of info along w/ more difficult exam questions. The Giles' has a good balance of both. In the end, move on from this review book.
Reviews
The academic section of the book has useful information, but the exam questions are weak and not reflective of the more applied questions used on the current national exam. The book was too expensive given the exam questions.
Reviews
In my opinion, this Dutton book is better than the O'sullivan's and Giles' review books. This book is a detailed and easy to read review with a lot of clinically relevant information. I am not a big fan of the questions after each chapter, although they are helpful. However, the CD is fairly decent with question styles geared towards the NPTE exam. Definitely a smart investment for this book and CD. Highly recommended.

Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience, 3rd Edition

Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience, 3rd Edition
Mark H. Johnson and Michelle de Haan | 2010-01-01 00:00:00 | Wiley-Blackwell | 304 | Medicine
"There is a real lack of texts in the area of developmental cognitive neuroscience and Mark Johnson’s book thus fills and important gap. It takes a decidedly neurocomputational perspective and provides a wonderful synthesis of fundamental issues and an overview of the state of empirical knowledge in this emerging field. It is definitely a clarion call for a new way of doing both developmental psychology and cognitive neuroscience." – Professor Bruce Pennington, University of Denver

The Idler

The Idler
Professor Solomon | 2009-01-01 00:00:00 | | 49 | Fiction
Perhaps man may be more properly distinguished as an idle animal; for there is no man who is not sometimes idle. It is at least a definition from which none that shall find it in this paper can be excepted; for who can be more idle than the reader of the Idler?

Scarcely any name can be imagined from which less envy or competition is to be dreaded. The Idler has no rivals or enemies. The man of business forgets him; the man of enterprise despises him; and though such as tread the same track of life, fall commonly into jealousy and discord, Idlers are always found to associate in peace, and he who is most famed for doing nothing, is glad to meet another as idle as himself.

An Atlas of the Smaller Maps in Orientable and Nonorientable Surfaces (Discrete Mathematics and Its Applications)

An Atlas of the Smaller Maps in Orientable and Nonorientable Surfaces (Discrete Mathematics and Its Applications)
David Jackson,Terry I. Visentin | 2000-09-15 00:00:00 | Chapman and Hall/CRC | 296 | Operating Systems
Maps are beguilingly simple structures with deep and ubiquitous properties. They arise in an essential way in many areas of mathematics and mathematical physics, but require considerable time and computational effort to generate. Few collected drawings are available for reference, and little has been written, in book form, about their enumerative aspects. An Atlas of the Smaller Maps in Orientable and Nonorientable Surfaces is the first book to provide complete collections of maps along with their vertex and face partitions, number of rootings, and an index number for cross referencing. It provides an explanation of axiomatization and encoding, and serves as an introduction to maps as a combinatorial structure. The Atlas lists the maps first by genus and number of edges, and gives the embeddings of all graphs with at most five edges in orientable surfaces, thus presenting the genus distribution for each graph. Exemplifying the use of the Atlas, the authors explore two substantial conjectures with origins in mathematical physics and geometry: the Quadrangulation Conjecture and the b-Conjecture.The authors' clear, readable exposition and overview of enumerative theory makes this collection accessible even to professionals who are not specialists. For researchers and students working with maps, the Atlas provides a ready source of data for testing conjectures and exploring the algorithmic and algebraic properties of maps.

Van Nostrand's Encyclopedia of Chemistry, 5th Edition

Van Nostrand's Encyclopedia of Chemistry, 5th Edition
Glenn D. Considine | 2005-02-03 00:00:00 | Wiley-Interscience | 1856 | Internal Medicine
Scientists, engineers, and technologists in many fields need a knowledge of chemistry because of the importance of chemistry in diverse technologies. In addition, to "classical" topics of chemistry, the new Encyclopedia covers nanotechnology, fuel cell technology, green chemistry, forensic chemistry, supramolecular chemistry, combinatorial chemistry, materials chemistry, and proteomics.

This fifth print edition has been revised and updated, and includes over 200 new articles, as well as 1,300 updated articles.
Reviews
It's rather hard to argue with reviews from JACS and other prestigious journals. That said, this is not a review aimed at librarians, but rather at someone looking for a reference book for a home or small office library.

I think the question in the title of this review sums up the problems with this book. There's certainly a lot of information here, but this book is certainly not what I expected from an "Encyclopedia of Chemistry." It seems to be designed for people who need specialized coverage of certain subfields of chemistry, rather than a broad overview of the whole--but, then, why not produce separate books (e.g., "Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry," "Encyclopedia of Organic Chemistry," etc.), rather than produce a book with such an odd mixture of coverage.

For example, several pages are devoted to peroxides and peroxide compounds, which, while perhaps excessive, is not unreasonable. Likewise, I can understand the significant amount of space devoted to industrial issues (e.g., petroleum chemistry, polymers, etc.). But then there are the truly questionable articles, such as a four-page article on viruses, that barely mentions chemistry issues at all--and the obvious articles that one would expect but are not in fact there (especially when it comes to general/physical chemistry). For example, the Born-Haber cycle gets no mention at all, not even in the index (and lattice energy gets a scant ten lines or so). Similarly, there are no entries (even in the index) for the Arrhenius equation or the Nernst equation. (Remarkably, the book has an entry on Nernst, which cites his most famous work as the Nernst effect, and makes no mention at all of his eponymous equation!)

Were that not bad enough, there are a lot of questionable editorial decisions. For example, "Bronsted-Lowry" theory is listed as the much rarer "Lowry-Bronsted", and "Gibbs free energy" is relegated to an article on "free energy"; in neither case is there so much as a "pointer" entry to direct a "novice" to the desired article (similarly, "redox" reactions do not apparently rate such a link, either).

Combine all of the above faults with numerous typos, and the result is a largely frustrating work. Given the high cost, it's probably not worth the money unless you can find a copy beforehand and see if it meets your needs.

The Worldview of Personalism: Origins and Early Development (Oxford Theological Monographs)

The Worldview of Personalism: Origins and Early Development (Oxford Theological Monographs)
Jan Olof Bengtsson | 2006-12-28 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press, USA | 320 | Philosophy
Personalism is understood today as the name of an important current in twentieth-century thought which, inspired by the Christian and humanistic traditions of the West, has sought to deepen our understanding of the meaning and value of human personhood. Opposing both individualism and collectivism, personalism has stressed the uniqueness of each person, the meaning and value of interpersonal relations, and the unity that holds persons together and is, ultimately, also personal in itself: the person of God. Personalism's insights into the nature of personhood have broad implications for our view of ethics, politics, education, and religion. The history of personalism has, however, been poorly understood. Jan Olof Bengtsson shows that personalism began as early as the eighteenth century and was a central, international current of thought throughout the nineteenth century - that it was, in fact, more characteristic of the nineteenth century than of the twentieth.

Collective Behavior and Public Opinion: Rapid Shifts in Opinion and Communication (European Institute for the Media Series)

Collective Behavior and Public Opinion: Rapid Shifts in Opinion and Communication (European Institute for the Media Series)
Jaap van Ginneken | 2003-02-01 00:00:00 | Routledge | 320 | Social Sciences
This is a highly innovative and stimulating work with the outline of an entirely new approach to massive and rapid shifts in opinion and communication. It discusses and explains such mysterious phenomena as sudden crazes and crashes, fads and fashion, hypes and manias, moral outrage and protests, gossip and rumors, and scares and panics.

Rich in alternative insights, the book is divided into four parts. Part I discusses the points of departure: the most relevant processes of opinion formation and communication. Part II is about phenomena on three different levels, that have traditionally been studied within the twin fields of mass psychology and collective behavior sociology. Part III focuses on the three prime forms of "emotional coloring" of opinion currents and public moods. Part IV discusses a combination of some of the aforementioned phenomena: successive crazes and crashes in financial markets, and looks at why technological and economic, and social and opinion forecasts often fail so miserably.

The audience for this book includes students of social and mass psychology, social movements and collective behavior sociology, and opinion and communication in general. Professionals in public relations, marketing, health, finance, and politics, as well as the educated lay audience, will also find this book of interest.

European Politics Today: Second Edition

European Politics Today: Second Edition
Patricia Hogwood,Geoffrey K. Roberts | 2003-10-17 00:00:00 | Manchester University Press | 256 | Politics
In this new edition, Patricia Hogwood and Geoffrey Roberts offer a comprehensive introduction to the political systems and processes of Western Europe. The book begins with an overview of the features and events that have shaped the political landscape of Europe up to the end of the 20th century. The authors go on to discuss liberal democracy, historical sources of conflict between countries, electoral systems, political parties and interest groups, governments and parliaments. The final section looks at federalism and EU decision-making and concludes with a consideration of how liberal democracies in western Europe have attempted to provide stable government while remaining responsive to changes in society. This book has been fully updated to take account of the French, British and Italian general elections that have occurred in recent years, as well as the momentous changes that have taken place in global politics as a result 9/11, and the preparations for EU enlargement. The chapters on the European Union and democracy in Western Europe have also been substantially revised to take account of globalization and recent political corruption issues.

Buried

Buried
Mark Billingham | 2008-01-01 00:00:00 | Harper | 448 | Fiction Other
BURIED is a all about the human beings, their frailties, and a penchant for secrets, enhanced by characters who come alive through the writing of Mark Billingham. All the characterizations feel real and dimensional. It helps to have a sympathetic everyman protagonist. The slightly taciturn Tom Thorne, grieves for his father, has a love of country music, while is well-respected on the job has made enough enemies to him slightly off-balance. I liked that there while there was a love-interest, the relationship didn't take front and center. The star of the story was a well-plotted storyline with enough twists and turns to keep the pages turning well into the night.

Netlab

Netlab
Ian T. Nabney | 2001-11-28 00:00:00 | Springer | 438 | Neural Networks
This volume provides students, researchers and application developers with the knowledge and tools to get the most out of using neural networks and related data modelling techniques to solve pattern recognition problems. Each chapter covers a group of related pattern recognition techniques and includes a range of examples to show how these techniques can be applied to solve practical problems."...provides a unique collection of many of the most important pattern recognition algorithms. With its use of compact and easily modified MATLAB scripts, the book is ideally suited to both teaching and research." Christopher Bishop, Microsoft Research, Cambridge, UK "...a welcome addition to the literature on neural networks and how to train and use them to solve many of the statistical problems that occur in data analysis and data mining" Jack Cowan, Mathematics Department, University of Chicago, US "If you have a pattern recognition problem, you should consider NETLAB; if you use NETLAB you must have this book." Keith Worden, University of Sheffield, UK
Reviews
the book is very good for research and sutudying persons because it has some code and clear expression on the content .
Reviews
Any praise that I have for this well written, interesting book has already been expressed in other reviews. I do have a couple of observations that may be helpful:

1) This book does not explictly cover everything in Chris Bishop's book. For instance, code for the optimal brain surgeon technique is not covered by Nabney. In fact, several important topics from Chapters 8 and 9 from Bishop are not covered here.

2) Not all of the Matlab code is compatable with Octave, which of course, it doesn't claim to be.

These are not complaints. This is one of the best books on "how to apply software" I've yet to read. But it's not a just a book on algorithms to which it's consise, well placed discussions of theory will attest.

Reviews
Netlab implements in Matlab most algorithms presented in Christopher Bishop's excelent book Neural Networks for Pattern Recognition

Nabney's book is an indispensable guide if you want to go into the inner workings of Netlab.

Recommended.
Reviews
Amazingly compact book and MATLAB toolbox that provides an exceptionally clear introduction to a core collection of pattern recognition tools. This text and the related MATLAB toolbox ostensibly accompany Chris Bishop's text _Neural networks for pattern recognition_ and brilliant as that book is, this is the perfect supplement that does so much more than just implement the algorithms (and not just for MATLAB users but for anyone who appreciates the merits of learning by doing). From the introductory chapters on MATLAB syntax and optimization (clearer and more useful than the _Numerical Recipes_ version) you know you are in for a breathless ride but the examples and demos are perfectly chosen to illustrate the relative merits of the different approaches under consideration.

The chapter titles are

1. Introduction

2. Parameter optimisation algorithms

3. Density modelling and clustering

4. Single layer networks

5. Multi-layer perceptron

6. Radial Basis functions

7. Visualization and latent variable models

8. Sampling

9. Bayesian techniques

10. Gaussian Processes

The MATLAB code is elegant and well-commented and lends itself to endless tweaking and experimentation. I wish I had written this book. Congratulations to the author and hope there is another book on the way.
Reviews
This is actually a must-have book for those who want to study pattern recognition.

Reviews
The way this book is set up with worksheets to guide generating your qualifications is a huge time-saver, streamlining your process. The way you will (no doubt) then streamline your workflow in your new job! Instead of mulling over the who-what-which's of it all, I had my resume prepared on Sunday and went out with it on Monday, just as the book describes. (Now if only I could say to you that I had an interview on Tuesday followed by a job offer, huh?!)

One of the most excellent pieces of advice in the book? "...Your desire is not to do a perfect resume - it is to get the perfect job." I highly recommend giving this book a run for its money, it's got some great advice on how to talk around your shortcomings and play up your successes and talents.
