Gribov Memorial Volume: Quarks, Hadrons, and Strong Interactions: Proceedings of the Memorial Workshop Devoted to the 75th Birthday V N Gribov, Budapest, Hungary 22 - 24 May
Yu L. Dokshitzer,P. Levai,J. Nyiri | 2006-06-07 00:00:00 | World Scientific Publishing Company | 572 | Mathematical Physics
Vladimir Naumovich Gribov was one of most outstanding theorists, a key figure in the creation of the modern elementary particle physics. His many discoveries are famous and well accepted by the physics community (Gribov-Regge theory of high energy hadron interactions, Gribov vacuum pole - Pomeron, Reggeon field theory parton evolution equations, neutrino oscillations, Gribov copies in non-Abelian gauge field theories, etc.). Some of his ideas look unacceptable and strange at the first glance. Even at the second glance. Nowadays, under the weight of new theoretical developments and experimental results, his ideas are receiving the recognition they deserve. The Gribov Memorial Workshop, organized on his 75th birthday in Budapest, Hungary in 2005, clearly demonstrated the wealth and fertilization force of his ideas. Close colleagues, younger followers, world experts of the quark-hadron world have gathered together to display new angles of the Gribov heritage, and to remember the personality of a great man. This book collects the talks presented at, and contributed to, the Gribov-75 Memorial Workshop.

The Book of Fathers

The Book of Fathers
Miklos Vamos | 2009-10-13 00:00:00 | Other Press | 480 | Fiction Other
If you read this book you will find yourself constantly flipping to the front of the book where a chart of the family lineage of the main characters is provided. I found that when I had set the book aside for a couple of days that I was able to readily refresh my memory with a quick glance at that chart and pick up where I left off.

Also, if you choose to read this book I HIGHLY recommend that before you start the first chapter that you flip to the back of the book and read the author's notes and brief history of Hungary the author has put togther. I didn't do this until after I had read the book...more's the pity.

Tripolitania

Tripolitania
David J. Mattingly | 1995-02-05 00:00:00 | Routledge | 264 | Ancient
"Lepcis Magna", one of the greatest of the Roman cities of North Africa and one of the most famous archaeological sites in the Mediterranean, was situated in the region of Tripolitania. Birthplace of the Emperor Septimius Severus, the city has yielded many well-preserved monuments from its Roman past. Mattingly presents valuable information on the pre-Roman tribal background, the urban centres, the military frontier and the regional economy. He reinterprets many aspects of the settlement history of this marginal arid zone that was once made prosperous, and considers the wider themes of Romanization, frontier military strategy, and economic links between provinces and sources of elite wealth.

  • Listen to a free companion podcast on Frommers.com

A cruise is a complete vacation, so it's important that you choose the one that's right for you. Frommer's Cruises & Ports of Call is the most user-friendly, opinionated, and comprehensive guide you can buy before you set sail. We provide in-depth coverage on cruises departing from U.S. ports to the Caribbean, Alaska, Bermuda, Mexico and Canada.

Unlike rating systems used in other guides, our system is simple. We break down the essential elements of a cruise experience (dining, activities, children's activities, entertainment, service, overall enjoyment, and overall value), and rate them from "poor" to "outstanding." Photos of each ship combine with the text to give a better sense of the very real differences among the various lines.

Most important, this is the only cruise guide that provides the real prices people pay for cruises, not just the rack rates. Other guides tell you that a seven-night cruise aboard Royal Caribbean's Adventure of the Seas costs $1,919. You can pay that if you want to, but only Frommer's tells you that the same cruise is selling for $999. We give both the rack rates and the discount price for every cruise we review. This feature alone makes Frommer's Cruises and Ports of Call by far the most valuable trip-planning book among cruise guides.

Our authors, noted cruise experts who've personally checked out every ship sailing in and around North America, offer candid and unbiased opinions on them all. They are completely up to date, with all the latest developments and the newest ships. You'll also get complete coverage of the major port destinations, with advice on how to spend your limited time ashore.
Reviews
This book will tell you everything about all types of cruises and briefly where they go, what to see, what to do and a bit about each cruise line. It's a good all around book to get you started!
Reviews
Great book to throw in your backpack and take with you on the cruise. You can bone up on a bit of the history and it will get some ideas ffor excursions or places to visit on the islands.
Reviews
I found this book to be a valuable resource as I prepare for my first cruise. I'm sure I will refer to it again & again for any future cruises (which I hope are many!).
Reviews
These books are great tools. I have cruised many times and I still consult them before every cruise. I would say they are must haves for first timers. They summarize the Caribbean, Alaska, Hawaii, as well as many debarkation ports. What I find most useful is the information provided on each of the cruise lines and cruise ships. If you are unsure which ship would be best for you and your family this book will definitely help you decide. I would caution potential buyers visiting very small or less popular islands. Places like Anguilla, Trinidad and Tobago are noticeably absent from the book.
Reviews
I have always turned to Frommer's for honest reviews of just about any destination. Their website is full of great info too

Transforming Matter: A History of Chemistry from Alchemy to the Buckyball (Johns Hopkins Introductory Studies in the History of Science)

Transforming Matter: A History of Chemistry from Alchemy to the Buckyball (Johns Hopkins Introductory Studies in the History of Science)
Trevor H. Levere | 2001-07-11 00:00:00 | The Johns Hopkins University Press | 232 | Internal Medicine
Chemistry explores the way atoms interact, the constitution of the stars, and the human genome. Knowledge of chemistry makes it possible for us to manufacture dyes and antibiotics, metallic alloys, and other materials that contribute to the necessities and luxuries of human life. In Transforming Matter, noted historian Trevor H. Levere emphasizes that understanding the history of these developments helps us to appreciate the achievements of generations of chemists.

Levere examines the dynamic rise of chemistry from the study of alchemy in the seventeenth century to the development of organic and inorganic chemistry in the age of government-funded research and corporate giants. In the past two centuries, he points out, the number of known elements has quadrupled. And because of synthesis, chemistry has increasingly become a science that creates much of what it studies.

Throughout the book, Levere follows a number of recurring themes: theories about the elements, the need for classification, the status of chemical science, and the relationship between practice and theory. He illustrates these themes by concentrating on some of chemistry's most influential and innovative practitioners. Transforming Matter provides an accessible and clearly written introduction to the history of chemistry, telling the story of how the discipline has developed over the years.
In 1980, writes historian Trevor Levere, University of California physicists turned an "unimaginably small sample of bismuth into gold," turning one element into another through the medium of a particle accelerator. We call such things experimental science; a medieval scholar would have called it alchemy, a lay observer magic--all of which, by Levere's account, describe modern chemistry.

The history of chemistry is being rewritten every day, notes Levere. In the last three decades alone, more than 7.5 million chemical compounds have been discovered, while great advances have been made in our understanding of the chemical composition of the heavens and our own planet. Locating its origins in ancient and medieval alchemy, the quest to divine the nature of the universe, Levere traces the development of chemistry over a series of conceptual forward steps: from Francis Bacon's development of experimental method to Lavoisier's elucidation of the part of oxygen in combustion and respiration, from Mendeleyev's invention of the periodic table of the elements to the manufacture of modern microcircuitry (which, Levere observes, "involves nearly one hundred different chemical processes").

Much as science has progressed, the author notes, the alchemical aspects of chemistry have not disappeared, as that California experiment shows. What lies ahead is anyone's guess, but, Levere concludes, the history of chemical science is one of ever-changing boundaries, and "there is no reason to assume that this fluidity will come to a sudden stop." --Gregory McNamee
Reviews
I'm impressed. This book was written and published in academia. Any of my readers can tell you I have less that a good opinion of the ability of those in academia to write science so that we can understand it, let alone enjoy it. This is one book that managed to do just that, and no, I am not selling it as I need it for my poor students who have horrible textbooks to waddle through. This book not only managed to answer questions that I've had during time when I was a student learning chemistry, a graduate using chemistry in the lab, and now an instructor of chemistry...but it also tied everything together in a nice, fairly short package and get a little physics in there too (as it is hard to totally nonsurgically remove these two topics from being intertwined with each other). This is a book I highly recommend to be used as recommended reading or even required reading for students, since it did not cost much and made so many things much clearer than the more expensive textbooks did. The book introduces the r eader to almost all the major ideas and concepts in chemistry, ties them from the alchemist of the 1700s to the experimenters of the 1800s and so on, and allows the students to make a choice of whether to go on and read much more by giving a decent bibliography.

I am going to see if I can find more in these books and series that are as well-written as this book is. Science needs to be understood by everyone, and we should have the choice of whether to take advantage of its accessibility. We shouldn't have to deal with the idea that seems to be cherished among many of the elite at the Ivy League schools that we don't need to be scientifically-literate as announced by the President of Princeton last year when he said that women could not do science...somebody forgot to tell Marie Curie that, and the thousands of women who have worked in and loved science since then. It isn't his decision. It's ours, and every child in this country has a right to equal access to the same information, especially if we work our butts off trying to achieve that equality!

The 3 stars given are meaningless because I haven't bought this book. May be it deserves more, may be less. I just wish to explain why, although tempted, I haven't bought it.

Roughly speaking, 90% of our chemical knowledge have been discovered in the 20th century. So I found the title "...from Alchemy to the Buckyball" most appealing. I thought : "this is one of those rare books which discuss also modern chemistry".

When examining the index however, I haven't found the following names : Barton, Butenandt, Corey, Cornforth, Fukui, Haworth, Hoffmann, Lehn, Natta, Prelog, Robinson, Ruzicka, Taub,Wieland, Windaus, Woodward, Ziegler..., all Nobel Prize winners. Not to mention other outstanding chemists like Eschenmoser or Stork.

This may be a very good book for the history of chemistry up to the beginning of the 20th century, it is not a history of the whole science of chemistry. So, with much regret, I did not buy it.
Reviews
The one-sentence review runs thus: anyone with an appreciation for science and/or history, particularly both, will enjoy this book.

The author, Trevor Levere, is obviously a consummate historian, with thorough knowledge of the workings of science and its development through the ages. Levere has a keen sense of the humanity and little ironies that make up the twists and turns of the shaping of the state of chemical knowledge at various times, and conveys them in a friendly, readable style. I found the discussion of the various approaches to gases and how knowledge of the gas laws came out out of them particularly interesting (and did you know Robert Boyle in his day was considered an "alchemist"?). The author is very good about zeroing in on the most fertile areas of discovery and expounding upon what came out of them.

There are only a couple of minor problems that don't have much impact on the overall flow of the book. One is that Faraday and electrochemistry were introduced rather abruptly, with no information about where charge-sign and current conventions came from. It was something I wanted to learn about, and felt it was rather conspicuously absent. The other is the final chapter, about 20th century chemical discoveries (DNA, buckyballs, yadda yadda), which seemed a bit meandering and aimless as a whole.

But overall, excellent, very accessible. Don't hesitate.
Reviews
Transforming Matter: A History Of Chemistry From Alchemy To The Buckyball is a college-level discourse on the history of chemistry and will serve as a fine basic introduction for any studying the history of science as a whole. Chapters begin with early alchemy to survey the rise of theories about the elements, the creation of classification systems, and relationships between scientific method and practices. An excellent and highly recommended introduction.

Digital Watermarking and Steganography, 2nd Ed. (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Multimedia Information and Systems)

Digital Watermarking and Steganography, 2nd Ed. (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Multimedia Information and Systems)
| 2007-11-16 00:00:00 | | 0 | Cryptography

Digital audio, video, images, and documents are flying through cyberspace to their respective owners. Unfortunately, along the way, individuals may choose to intervene and take this content for themselves. Digital watermarking and steganography technology greatly reduces the instances of this by limiting or eliminating the ability of third parties to decipher the content that he has taken. The many techiniques of digital watermarking (embedding a code) and steganography (hiding information) continue to evolve as applications that necessitate them do the same. The authors of this second edition provide an update on the framework for applying these techniques that they provided researchers and professionals in the first well-received edition. Steganography and steganalysis (the art of detecting hidden information) have been added to a robust treatment of digital watermarking, as many in each field research and deal with the other. New material includes watermarking with side information, QIM, and dirty-paper codes. The revision and inclusion of new material by these influential authors has created a must-own book for anyone in this profession.

*This new edition now contains essential information on steganalysis and steganography
*New concepts and new applications including QIM introduced
*Digital watermark embedding is given a complete update with new processes and applications

The Lost Colony:A novel

The Lost Colony:A novel
Eoin Colfer | 2006-01-01 00:00:00 | Disney-Hyperion | 400 | Fiction Other
Averaging one a year, Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl series is no rush-job, I am increasingly enjoying and looking forward to every entry more than the Harry Potter series. Colfer's magical world just seems more accessible and imaginative. And he is constantly changing the type of story rather than just another labored part of a single massive arc.

Slightly longer this time around, the book has Artemis tracking demon activity on the time-displaced island of Hybras. The time spell which keeps Hybras stuck in oblivion is beginning to unravel and Artemis is busy investigating how to fix it when a 12-year-old French female rival (and love interest) kidnaps an insecure, classically educated demon, just as he manifests on Earth, right under Artemis' nose. Not knowing what trouble she has started, Artemis must break into her chatau, travel to Taiwan and match wits with her psychotic security in the Taipei 101 Tower to get the demon back before travelling to Hybras to fix the time spell with Captain Holly in tow.

I especially like the relationship between Artemis and Holly. Once enemies but now close friends. And the ending, not only including an imaginative and pretty damn cool twist, in which they become a part of each other forever (not giving anything away) was a nice touch.

As usual it's packed with ultra-technology that always seems realistic now matter how far-fetched, the typical amount of globe-trotting and the right amount of humor.

Artemis Fowl is definitely the best fantasy boy-hero. Harry Who?

Low-Power Design Techniques and CAD Tools for Analog and RF Integrated Circuits

Low-Power Design Techniques and CAD Tools for Analog and RF Integrated Circuits
Piet Wambacq, Georges Gielen, and John Gerrits | 2001-01-01 00:00:00 | Springer | 329 | Electrical Engineering
Modern System-on-Chip designs are increasingly mixed-signal designs that require efficient systematic design methodologies and supporting computer-aided design (CAD) tools to manage the design complexity in the available design time, that is ever decreasing due to tightening time-to-market constraints. The purpose of Low-Power Design Techniques and CAD Tools for Analog and RF Integrated Circuits is to provide an overview of very recent research results that have been achieved as part of the Low-Power Initiative of the European Union, in the field of analog, RF and mixed-signal design methodologies and CAD tools. It is a representative sampling of the current state of the art in this area, with special focus on low-power design methodologies and tools for analog and RF circuits and architectures. Concrete designs, mainly for telecommunication applications, such as low-noise amplifiers, oscillators, filters, but also complete transceiver front-ends, are discussed and analyzed in a methodological way, and their modeling and simulation, both at the circuit level and at the architectural level, are treated.

Word Smart: Building an Educated Vocabulary 2006
Marissa Pareles | 2006-01-01 00:00:00 | Princeton Review | 392 | English
The words people use say a lot about them. Some words say that they are smart, persuasive, and informed. Others say that they don't know what they're talking about. Knowing which words to use and how to use them are keys to getting the most from one's mind and to communicating effectively.

To find out which words readers absolutely need to know, The Princeton Review researched the vocabularies of educated adults. The Princeton Review analyzed newspapers from The New York Times to The Wall Street Journal, magazines from Time to Scientific American, and books from current bestsellers to classics. Editors threw out words that most people know and focused on the words that people misunderstand or misuse.

TPR also combed through the SAT and other standardized tests to determine which words are tested most frequently. In this updated third edition, editors give readers the most important words they need to know to score higher.

Includes special lists covering:

• Common usage errors
• Most frequently tested words on standardized tests
• Foreign phrases, abbreviations, and terms readers need to know to understand finance, science, computers, and the arts

Meningitis (Deadly Diseases and Epidemics)

Meningitis (Deadly Diseases and Epidemics)
Brian Shmaefsky I.Edward Alcamo | 2004-01-01 00:00:00 | Chelsea House Publications | 118 | Medicine
Diseases of the central nervous system can have unexpected effects on a person. Physicians have learned about the way the brain works by studying patients with central nervous system damage. The most common studies about brain function investigated the effects of strokes on behavior and movement. Stroke involves an interuption of blood flow to specific regions of the brain. Studies of stroke victims revealed that the ability to recognize an object is divided up among various regions of the brain. For example, the memory of seeing an apple is stored in a different part of brain from the memories of hearing the word apple, spelling the word apple, and tasting an apple. Strokes to a small region of the brain could cause a person to know the word apple and even be aware of the fruit’s taste without being able to visualize an apple. Studies of people with the degenerative brain disorder Alzheimer’s disease revealed that the condition causes people to lose specific memories while other memories remain intact. Investigating the effects of spinal cord injuries and infectious diseases such as encephalitis and meningitis has also contributed to our knowledge of brain function. Immune system chemicals that disrupt neuron communication cause the hallucinations—illusions of feeling, hearing, or seeing something that does not exist—that result from many types of meningitis. It is believed that too much or too little stimulation to nerves creates hallucinations.

The new, completely revised, and updated edition of this classic text --sponsored by the International Epidemiological Association (IEA) and previously edited by John Last-- remains the definitive dictionary in epidemiology worldwide. In fact, with contributions from over 220 epidemiologists and other users of epidemiology from around the globe, it is more than a dictionary: it includes explanations and comments on both core epidemiologic terms and on other scientific terms relevant to all professionals in clinical medicine and public health, as well as to professionals in the other health, life, and social sciences. Anyone seeking clarity on epidemiologic and methodological definitions important to human health will find it here. On the eve of a field trip to a foreign land, a health scientist remarked that if he had to limit his professional library to one volume on epidemiology, this would be the book he would choose.

Telecommunications Regulation

Telecommunications Regulation
John Buckley | 2003-09-01 00:00:00 | The Institution of Engineering and Technology | 264 | Communications
This book examines the background to regulation and the work of the regulator. It discusses typical regulatory rules and the legal and administrative framework for regulation, and looks at regulatory strategies, market structures and approaches to price control. The book includes a number of case studies which show how regulators engage with such topical issues as interconnection and loop unbundling, and also features technical coverage of both numbering and number portability. Finally, it looks at new products and services such as virtual network operators, intelligent networks, radio spectrum and next generation networks, and considers the impact these might have on the future of regulation. Publication of this book is very timely since it includes coverage of the four new European Directives on Telecommunications Regulation (the Framework Directive, the Access and Interconnection Directive, the Authorisation Directive and the Universal Service Directive) due to come into force on 23 July 2003. A comprehensive, in-depth guide to the subject, this book will be a valuable resource for engineers and managers in the industry, as well as lawyers and economists needing an insight into current telecommunications regulation.

Twentieth-Century Marxism: A Global Introduction

Twentieth-Century Marxism: A Global Introduction
Daryl Glaser,David M. Walker | 2007-11-05 00:00:00 | Routledge | 272 | Popular Economics

This book outlines and assesses the Marxist tradition as it developed in the twentieth century, and considers its place and standing as we move into the twenty-first century.

It is divided into three parts examining Marxism historically, geographically and thematically:

  • Part 1 analyzes early Marxism in Russia and Europe as it developed after the death of Marx. Lenin, Trotsky, Luxemburg, Kautsky, Bernstein and the school of thought associated with them are all examined
  • Part 2 deals with thinkers, debates and movements that followed the early Marxism focused on in part one, and includes chapters on Marxism in Europe, the Soviet Union, Africa, Asia and Latin America
  • Part 3 is concerned with more contemporary debates in relation to Marxism and its standing and role today. The chapters in this section consider various themes including the relationship between theory and practice in Marxism, democratic procedure and liberties, Marxism as an economic critique of capitalism and Marxist methodology.

Twentieth Century Marxism is not an introspective discussion of Marxism that would be of interest only to a limited number of specialists. Rather, it provides a thoughtful and stimulating contribution to debates about the role of Marxism today and its future direction.

Nietzsche and Legal Theory: Half-Written Laws (Discourses of Law)
Peter Goodrich,Mariana Valverde | 2005-09-29 00:00:00 | Routledge | 224 | Philosophy
"Nietzsche and Legal Theory" is an anthology designed to provide legal and socio-legal scholars with a sense of the very wide range of projects and questions in whose pursuit Nietsche's work can be useful. From medical ethics to criminology, from the systemic anti-Semitism of legal codes arising in Christian cultures, to the details of intellectual property debates about regulating the use of culturally significant objects, the contributors (from the fields of law, philosophy, criminology, cultural studies, and literary studies) demonstrate and enact the sort of creativity that Nietzsche associated with the free-spirits to whom he addressed some of his most significant work.

This book is good for beginner and advanced SQL Server user. The lessons are explained clearly and easy to understand.
Reviews
I knew only how to pass a SELECT * statement before obtaining this book. I have since taken a job writing code from what I learned from this book. Not only is their a wealth of information, but the exercises challenge the reader to think "outside the box" and create code using the information learned in the chapter. I would have given this book 5 stars but sections like views were a bit weak. After reading this book definitely pick up The Guru's Guide to Transact SQL.
Reviews
As a programmer with over 10 years experience I have found this book to be comprehensive and concise. There are many useful examples many of which have helped me solve problems on the job.

Lowell Mauer explains things very well.

This is my main reference book it has paid for itself many times over. I highly recommend it.
Reviews
As a relatively new database administrator with no SQL experience, this book was EXACTLY what I needed. It is written in an easy-to-read and easily comprehended style. It takes me everywhere I need to go with confidence that the code I now write will perform the necessary functions...and perform them efficiently and effectively. Thank you, Sam!

The Historical Jesus For Dummies

The Historical Jesus For Dummies
Catherine M. Murphy PhD | 2007-12-05 00:00:00 | For Dummies | 320 | Greece
Was Jesus of Nazareth a real person? Did all of the events described in the gospels really happen? How was the world Jesus lived in different from our own? In The Historical Jesus For Dummies, you'll discover the answers to these questions and hundreds more.

This accessible, plain-English guide to the life and times of Jesus paints a vibrant picture of his world, examining records in the New Testament and Roman history as well as recent archeological finds that shed new light on his life. You'll find informative explanations of Jesus's birth, infancy, and childhood; meet his followers and enemies; learn about his teachings and miracles, and discover how modern scholars and historians have arrived at these conclusions. This fascinating primer to the real-life Jesus explores:

  • The different stories of Jesus in the gospels
  • The three quests for the historical Jesus
  • The miracles of Jesus
  • Jewish society and the influence of Rome in Jesus's time
  • The Roman practice of crucifixion
  • The politics of Roman-occupied Judea
  • What people though of Jesus when he was alive
  • The Gnostic gospels and other non-biblical texts of the time
  • The top controversies surrounding Jesus
  • Portrayals of Jesus in art and film

Complete with a concise account of the spread of Christianity throughout the world, The Historical Jesus For Dummies puts you in touch with the human Jesus who walked the earth and whose teachings changed the world.
Reviews
It's often hard to separate fact from fiction when watching cable television PBS specials on religion or reading literature. This book does an excellent job addressing many of the controversial aspects surrounding Jesus and debunking what is supported by historical evidence and what is not. It considers the geopolitical influences, the various cultures, as well as corroborating and noncorroborating literature at that time in history. It was written with insight, balance, and a sense of humor.
Reviews
I have been working for 4 years with a group of very well educated adults who have little or no theological training. We rarely find a text that is as helpful and engaging as Prof. Murphy's text. Too often the texts that claim to help "familiarize" are overly simplified. Murphy's writing is elegantly clear and summarizes complex arguments quite nicely. It is a book for the un-initiated who can think. In addition, it is no small task to satisfy the skeptics and the people who stand firmly in their belief in a personal God. Murphy's book satisfies both.
Reviews
I bought this book perhaps foolishly expecting a review of genuine historical research into the life of the man at the center of Christianity. NOT THIS BOOK. This is written by someone deeply invested in the religious view of Jesus, for example, she writes, 'I will take you through the events of the crucifixion and resurrection and tell you what most likely happened'. Good grief; you know? How exactly? I got the strong sense that the author could give no historical evidence that the man Jesus ever existed. Can that be true?
Reviews
The Historical Jesus for Dummies is a tour de force of scholarship in history, sociology, and theology. It is not just for "dummies" but for anyone who wants to discover the real Jesus of Nazareth or review some of the best current thinking on the subject. This book is informative, readable, and most of all, accurate. It challenges readers to go beyond what they thought they knew about Jesus and find out what history really tells us.

Nirvana: Unplugged in New York

Nirvana: Unplugged in New York
Nirvana | 1995-03-01 00:00:00 | Hal Leonard Corporation | 64 | Songbooks
Matching folio with 14 songs, including: About A Girl * Come As You Are * Pennyroyal Tea * and more. Also includes photos from the now infamous MTV sessions.
Reviews
This is a standard tab book, notated with lyrics. It's a good album and if this format appeals to you, there really are no qualms with the book's design. Although I prefer simple chord books, I'm not aware of any for Nirvana's "Unplugged".
Reviews
The MTV Unplugged contains all songs performed on MTV. I have rated it 4 stars only cos' the stars are bright and this album can't shine for Nirvana alone. Tablature edition for first guitar and vocals which is great. Far away from Nirvana in my opinion as long as the performance is concerned (Nirvana was a grunge band) but I must hold on to the review and I claim noone should be dissapointed in this edition. I checked all songs and every single note I was after, was it vocals or guitar a few times seemed to be tabbed correct. The lyrics are also well copied. If you don't play in a band you should go after this edition. It is a Nirvana MTV standalone performers' choice.
Reviews
I recieved this item in a matter of days. It was in wonderful condition. Thanks so much!!
Reviews
As the album is fantastic to begin with, this book just adds to the enjoyment. Solid Nirvana tunes in a mellow set, the songs are great for the amateur guitarist, not difficult at all, and fun to play when you bring the friends over. The book makes it easy to emulate the man and his band.
Reviews
An excellent medium level guitar book.

Choice And the End of Social Housing

Choice And the End of Social Housing
Peter King | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | Institute of Economic Affairs | 137 | Economics
Peter King shows how the arguments in favour of central and local government control of so-called social housing do not stand up to close scrutiny. Indeed, the policy of the current government will be ineffective in pursuing the government's own aims. Instead, Peter King shows how directing subsidies through the consumers of housing can achieve better housing without political control.
Reviews
Peter King follows in the footsteps of a number of Institute of Economic Affairs who have written on the subject of the housing market in Britain. While most of his predecessors have written primarily on the subject of choice of tenure, King opts to look at the issue of social housing in the context of the policies of the Labour government which claims to be concerned with the ability of customers to choose.

Given the nature of social housing, which not only includes the provision of housing for those in need, King also examines the system of financial support for residents.

Recently there was a highly publicised plan involving the demolition of empty, aging houses in Liverpool which provoked popular unrest. What made this plan so noteworthy in Britain and elsewhere in the world, was that it included the home where Ringo Starr, the Beatles' drummer was born. That, combined with howls of protest by Conservative MPs objecting to plans to build thousands of new homes in their constituencies near to London, has brought housing policy in Britain sharply into focus.

King begins by examining the case of the housing market and assessing to what extent that market is different from that of other goods and services. From there he provides a brief history of social housing in Britain from the Victorian era to the 1970s. He goes on to consider the policies of the Thatcher administration toward housing and, in particular, the "Right to Buy" policy which allowed sitting tenants to purchase their local authority home at a discount, the rate of which depended on their length of tenure.

In the latter half of the book, King puts the policies of the Blair administrations under the microscope. He finds that the ending of the right to buy policy has placed social housing more than ever under central control. While New Labour is not opposed to owner occupation and actively encourages it, it's policies towards social housing are not a return to the policies of prior Labour administrations. What emerges from his analysis is that in many ways current policy on social housing is a continuation of those of the previous Conservative governments which in many ways are linked more to Treasury control of finances and centralisation of housing policy rather than empowering the citizen and giving people the choice of self determination. Peter King finds too, that the current policies of financing social tenants which involves the making of payments direct to the landlord deprives the customer of the personal and social skill of paying rent and managing their own finances whilst at the same time forcing them into a state of dependency upon the state.

King argues that the continuance of current policies will have a detrimental effect in general and offers an alternative which will remove the srtructural rigidities inherent in the system and allow for greater freedom for landlords and tennants alike from state control and direction.

He contends that what is needed is a reform of tenancy laws to make all landlords private and to finance tenants directly. He advocates the reestablishment of choice in the market and sees the end of social housing as a consequence.

Peter King's timely book, is well researched and argued. It offers clear policy proposals for the future. It also highlights the continued trend to centralisation which has been taking place for almost thirty years where choice has become a word which means to place at arms reach rather than a word which stands for competition and liberalisation. The book also points to the growing dangers inherent within the regulatory sytems which oversee so much of our life. It is easier to change a regulation than it is to make wholsale changes in the law which requires public scrutiny. Look at what happens in Brussels.

Ordinary Differential Equations with Constant Coefficient (Translations of Mathematical Monographs)

Ordinary Differential Equations with Constant Coefficient (Translations of Mathematical Monographs)
S. K. Godunov | 1997-08-19 00:00:00 | American Mathematical Society | 282 | Mathematics
This book presents the theory of ordinary differential equations with constant coefficients. The exposition is based on ideas developing the Gelfand-Shilov theorem on the polynomial representation of a matrix exponential. Boundary value problems for ordinary equations, Green matrices, Green functions, the Lopatinskii condition, and Lyapunov stability are considered. This volume can be used for practical study of ordinary differential equations using computers. In particular, algorithms and computational procedures, including the orthogonal sweep method, are described. The book also deals with stationary optimal control systems described by systems of ordinary differential equations with constant coefficients. The notions of controllability, observability, and stabilizability are analyzed, and some questions on the matrix Lure-Riccati equations are studied.

just another "health" book. on the plus side it is a simple read, not very complicated. very repetitive, though. the author ,like other authors, has his favorite health remedies or cure-alls that he repeats, namely flax oil. i don't think health is as easy as just taking a few(or many) supplements.
